What You Wish For (Download): Surprising but somewhat flawed thriller with an interesting premisse at its core that doesn't work as well in the second half but it never becomes too bad either. Down on his luck cook is invited by his apparently well doing former school friend in a South American country where he cooks for rich people and then stuff happens...
Barbarian (Download): Another rewatch I would rather have had on bluray by now but it doesn't look like it's still getting released over here. Like "I See You", it's a completely surprising horror flick in which you won't see the twists coming and one of the better movies in the genre I've seen in the past years...
Layer Cake (Bluray): Now here's one I did finally manage to snag on disc, the best post-Snatch Guy Ritchie-esque movie, directed by his former producer Matthew Vaughn. All the usual twists and turns and dark humor is present and the acting is great, especially once Michael Gambon shows up...

Afro Samurai (Download/DVD): Came across a HD version of this one, which I've seen a few times already, though never in Japanese, which is still the case because this doesn't come with a Japanese track either. The biggest difference between this one and the one I have on DVD is this is 5 different episodes whereas the DVD was cut into a movie. Being in HD doesn't make a huge difference with this one however since it came out in that period when all anime became blurry for some reason, so even with the added resolution, the picture isn't that much sharper.

Furiosa: Mad Max Saga - If you enjoyed the first movie, should enjoy this one too. Found the action to be just as big and explosive as the first movie, at first was thinking that Anya Taylor-Joy doesn't look much like Charlize Theron but she did a great job. Is it as good as the first one? Maybe. Deserves more at the box office for sure.
{CLICK FOR SPOILER} Quite a few characters from the first movie appear in this one too, and some are played by the same people. I think it even showed a younger Max briefly at one point.

Tires (Download): Shane Gillis and Keeves Netflix series is a short, silly and pretty crass workplace comedy that's almost amusing but never as good as their youtube skits.

The Acolyte - Had heard it was garbage but I thought it was okay. Some things seemed maybe a little uncharacteristic of Star Wars but I didn't see any of the "propaganda" they were talking about. Only the first 2 episodes are out, guess will need to wait and see if it gets better or worse, but so far I think it's fine.
{CLICK FOR SPOILER} There's a Wookiee Jedi which I think some controversy comes from, I think in George Lucas' Star Wars Wookiees couldn't be Jedi. But I remember seeing something about them in the EU.

I didn't see any of the "propaganda" they were talking about. Everything seems to have "woke propaganda" in it these days to certain people online, before that it was "SJW" stuff, then "political correctness" Right when COVID started I watched Kingdom of Heaven directors cut. A very long movie about the Crusades, I remember reading back when it was released in 2005 not to watch it because it made all the Europeans in the movie a bunch of bumbling violent bigots while all the Muslims are portrayed as peace loving god-fearing and wise. Supposedly "Anti-western propaganda" When I watched it I was like did we even see the same movie? The Muslim characters were hardly displayed as some kind of noble creatures more just people reacting to the situation at hand. It had nothing in it comparable to to modern politics.

Yeah the way people were talking, you'd think there were gonna full-on gay/lesbian scenes but I saw no such thing. There might be a Jedi or two that are gay (maybe) but I don't think they'll actually go there. Jedi are forbidden to love, aren't they?
*edit* Also at the beginning, I think this is what may have ruffled feathers:
{CLICK FOR SPOILER}
a white jedi gets killed by a black assassin, I guess some out there didn't like that. If they'd watched the entire episode, they'd have seen the rest of the story and why that happened though.
I don't think there is any anti-white propaganda on this show, but one of the lead actresses did say in an interview that "destroying white people is their aim" on the show or something along those lines. She may have been joking, maybe not. I don't dig anti-white anything, a lot of my in-laws are white and they are honestly some of the most generous and caring people I know.

The Killer (Download): I had originally planned to watch "Hit Man" first, until I found out it was more of a comedy and I didn't really feel like it at the time, I wanted to watch a movie about a hitman and I remembered I really liked this David Fincher flick but I'd only seen it the once when it came out. Good movie with a superb Michael Fassbender.
Hit Man (Download): The new Richard Linklater is also a pretty good movie but it's not Fincher. Somewhat romcommy with a darker undertone, based on a real life person.
They Cloned Tyrone (Download): When I was putting The Killer onto a USB drive I also scrolled over this title, which I also remembered really liking but also having seen only once. I'd forgotten enough about it to be surprised all over again, especially about Jamie Foxx, who I didn't even remember being it it despite being the best character. Strange movie, my kind of strange. Blaxploitation sci-fi with social commentary...
Women in Heat Behind Bars (Download): A few minutes into this Japanese women in prison movie it started dawning on me I'd already seen it before but by then it was to late to switch onto something else so I just stuck with it. Plenty of Japanese bewbies and degradation on display, all neatly packed inside of 70 minutes. I wonder if I kept the movie the first time around...

Enemy (Bluray): The movie that made me notice director Denis Villeneuve (and cemented Jake Gyllenhaal as one of the best actors with an amazing run of movies in the mid 2010s). Eerie sounds, haunting visuals and a Lynchian storyline makes this one disturbing movie...
Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny (Bluray): Mostly reasonably enjoyable adventure movie that could have used some more practical stunts and less CG. If they can make Indy young for the opening, why not make the entire movie with a younger Indy?

Thats probably what did it. Remember for the "new" Star Wars movies Finn is the very first thing you see in the first trailer they released, I remember the day the trailer dropped people were like "I'm not racist BUT why is the first thing in the trailer a black man?" Like why does it matter? You haven't even seen the movie.

The only disappointing thing I found about Finn in that trilogy is they didn't make him a Jedi instead of Rey.

I also figured the awakening of the Force was in him, which is what made Kylo Ren notice him standing there when they destroy the village in the beginning of the movie... Guess that's another thing we have Ryan Johnson to blame for...

The Acolyte - Lost interest on episode 3, even the episodes before were already middling. Just is dull, the writing and characters are dull too.
Still not really seeing any of the "woke propaganda" like people are talking about, but it's just not good. Probably the weakest Star Wars thing so far.

Alien: Covenant (Bluray): A movie I said I'd never watch again, let alone actually buy, but then I came across it cheap when I was looking for some additional stuff to add to the basket to spread out the shipping costs on another order and there you have it. It's the best looking, most expensive bad movie you'll ever see. So much of it is great, which is then immediately negated by a character saying or doing the dumbest thing possible in any given situation. Love all the Walter/David stuff (even the fingering ) but the making David the 'creator' of the alien species is incredibly convoluted and makes no sense whatsoever since the derelict ship in the first movie, which takes place only 10 years after this one, had been there long enough for the space jockey to fossilize and even if it had made sense timewise, it still was better as an unsolved mystery. Now everything in the entire galaxy seems to revolve around the Weyland company... Under Paris (Download): A movie I said I'd never watch, but then I did and I probably shouldn't. It's pretty dumb. The opening is pretty cool, with the plastic soup, but it keeps doing dumber and dumber stuff right up until the finale which is just ridiculous. The Boys - Season 4 - Epi 1-3 (Download): Another strong start for one of the best series of recent years. The end of the first episode (Butcher's picture) had me laughing so loud I woke up the wife in another room.

The Simpsons S33E06 A Serious Flanders - 2-part episode that spoofs Fargo and A Simple Plan, maybe other movies like that too. Don't think any of it was canon but it was quite an episode, not like any other I've seen. Was like watching a good crime/thriller involving the Simpsons characters, really enjoyed it.

The Creator (Bluray): Despite its flaws I just enjoy this type of scifi movie too much to really get bothered by them too much. Great FX, great set pieces and technology but also quite a few holes.
Resident Evil: Degeneration (Bluray): Rewatch of the entire series of CG movies before watching the most recent one on bluray. They've always been fine. Not great but certainly watchable.
Joy Ride (Download/DVD): Starring Paul Walker, Steve Zahn and Leelee Sobieski's erect nips, a movie I've seen many times on DVD back in the early 2000s when these types of movies seemed to get released weekly. This is one of the more enjoyable ones...
Ricky Stanicky (Download): Old school comedy that somehow seems to have escaped from the '00s. John Cena is a great comedic actor.

Resident Evil: Damnation (Bluray): The beginning is a bit slow but the finale certainly delivers with plenty of gory action. Not the most interesting story though but seeing the female president kick ass was a nice touch. Kung Fu in heels and skirts, hot...
Sucker Punch (Bluray): Even though I've seen this movie plenty of times already, it certainly had been a while since I saw it last. Too long I'd say because I kinda love this one. The action scenes are great and I even like the dramatic bits. Oscar Isaac chewing the scenery, Carla Gugino being sexy as usual and the steam powered Germans...
Welcome to the Jungle (Bluray): Fun adventure action flick with the most 'Christopher Walkeny' Christopher Walken ever...

The end of the first episode (Butcher's picture) had me laughing so loud I woke up the wife in another room. Slasher movie formula. That can work when it's a B movie and the plot is slasher. But it doesn't for what's intended to be an A tier scifi horror. Edit: I still think the engineers created the mutagen that inevitably evolves to xenomorphs. David is just so egotistical and arrogant in his own intelligence that he thinks he created the xenomorph. Recall, in Prometheus (that preceded Convenant), there was a scene w/ David accessing the chamber containing the vases of black goo and the mechanism for opening the door was covered with Xenomorph slime (meaning other xenomorphs existed before David even started his tinkering with the black goo). Edit 2: You might also argue that David was aware he didn't create the xenomorph (drones/workers), but his true (secret) goal was that of introducing Queen xenomorph to the species.. since there's that line (in response to the question "what is it waiting for?) and David replies "mother." i.e. he's trying to infect more humans in hopes of producing a Queen. It stands to reason, there's no way of him knowing about a "mother" (presuming that's code for queen) unless he's the Android creating it. Why do I suspect "mother" was code for queen? He's an Android, so he can't tell a direct lie and he doesn't want to alert them with the cold/killer truth. Instead, he misleads his victims with subtle truths (veiled as something innocent, like "mother").
|
|
|
Post by sj on Jun 23, 2024 18:10:34 GMT -5
I think Ridley Scott wrote the script from the perspective that David's victims weren't aware he was evil. But Scott somehow missed that the audience knew (from watching Prometheus) and us knowing the character had evil intentions ruined chances for suspense in Convenant.

You guys are going to laugh but I finally have a TV for the first time since 2007. I always lived with roommates because having a roommate cuts rent/utilities in half plus company when you move to a new area.
I finally got my own place in 2021 a 4 minute drive from my job..........I had no TV because I always moved into places with TVs, plus you can watch anything you want on a computer.
A friend of mine was moving a couple weeks ago and absolutely needed to get rid of EVERYTHING. He gave me a free TV with an entertainment center.
Got it hooked up a couple weeks ago, did the scan for stations............0 stations found.
I knew TVs did better with an antenna but thought they had them built into the frame as well. Guess not.
Anyway today I was at Home Depot for something else and finally got an antenna, it came with a "USB Booster". I have no idea if its legit or a placebo, but you screw the Coax into it then plug the USB into a free slot on the TV or a USB charger.
Scanned again, 56 stations found. It defaulted to a 1080 station.
I have Verizon FioS and they tried to give me some kind of device to hook to my TV. I told them I didn't have a TV so keep it. Wonder if its worth getting?
Oh yeah. I have my PC and the TV hooked into the Ethernet on the router. I tried to cast to the TV but it required me to turn my wifi on. Then it worked but limited me to 1080p30. Lame. I assume if I could cast over ethernet that would be at least 1080p60, I could be wrong.
It is a SmartTV so I decided to try the apps. Even tho I never owned a "smart TV" I am well aware their "smart" apps are notoriously slow and shitty. I tried Amazon first. Scanned the QR code, had it send me a txt message and bam. Works but it is a bit sluggish unfortunately.
I never actually watched Season 3 of The Boys. It shows all of the progress on my Amazon account so thats cool.
Feels so weird having TV again.

Terminator 2 - Decided to watch this one again, it's been a long time. Playing that Terminator: Resistance game kinda put me in the mood to watch these movies again. I have the Ultimate Edition DVD, there's a secret extended special edition that can be unlocked by entering "82997" in the main menu after selecting special edition. 8/29/97 was the day the world ended in the movies. Only difference is it has that alternate ending where they're all in the park where the world never ended, otherwise it's the same special edition with all the other added/restored scenes.
There's a way around the menu thing though, can just use VLC Media Player or other player to get to the specific title track.

Resident Evil: Vendetta (Bluray): Must've seen it twice already since I have it on bluray but couldn't remember anything about it, like at all, so it was a nice surprise it was as good as it turned out to be. Probably my favorite of the series.
Resident Evil: Death Island (Bluray): Another one I didn't really remember, forgot it was on Alcatraz for one, but another pretty decent RE CGI movie. The John Wick style gunplay in the 2 most recent movies is done quite nicely. even if it may be a little out of place for what it's actually all about. But hey, I like it.
X-Men'97 - Season 1 (Download): Surprisingly awesome show. Never saw the OG show so I went in blind and the first few episodes didn't immediately grab me, but I hung in there and by god, it became amazing in the second half. Glad I took it the distance.
Brickleberry - Seasons 2-3 (Download): The first season was OK, but 2 and 3 are so much better and way, way crazier. I had to laugh out loud so many times because of all the crazy shit they said and did...
Beavis & Butthead - Season 8 (Download): Don't think I commented on every B&B season I've seen, but I've seen them all now. The 8th however was different from the rest because it was a first reboot of the series in 2011 (the rest are from the '90s). It's different in that by then there was barely any music on MTV anymore, so the boys are watching (and commenting on) all those 'reality TV' shows like Jersey Shore and 16 and Pregnant. Their commentary actually makes that stuff watchable, lol...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Download): That didn't take long. I was pondering maybe going to the theatre last sunday to watch this. Glad I didn't now, not because the movie wasn't good but because I don't enjoy the entire experience anymore. The movie itself was pretty good actually. Not Fury Road amazing, but still better than most. A lot more obvious CG use however.
O.J. Simpson: Blood, Lies and Murder (Download): Pretty bad documentary that did show a lot of gore in the form of crime scene and autopsy pics, which was nice, but the whole repeating every single thing at least 5 times got old really fast. Clearly something that was created for American TV, judging by the umpteen breaks in the program, and the cutting that was seemingly done for attention deficient viewers. I endured it but that's about it...

My friend told me the TV he gave me was "passed from person to person" I finally googled it and it was made in 2014, I didn't think it was 10 years old.
Got 30 feet of Coax and moved the antenna to the other side of the room above the window, went from 56 channels found to 71. Not bad for the cost of the antenna.
Debating if I want to bother with getting a more expensive antenna or not. The one I bought I was like $38 and the best indoor antenna recommended by an antenna YouTube channel is $90.
Also looks like the TV I got is too old to have an App Store, you can only pick from a list of pre-loaded apps. Unless I'm just too dumb to figure it out but I could find no way to add an app.

I got a keyboard for my TV for $5 from Goodwill. I check the electronics section at the local thrift stores pretty regularly
