Going to see Dune Part 2 tonight in IMAX. A friend of mine said its one of the best movies he has ever seen. Despite its issues I actually liked the Lynch movie from the 1980s. That creepy ass guild navigator scene was great. No amount of money or fame or clout or respect is worth being turned into a giant worm thing inside a sealed chamber. How do you think the fight scene in the SyFy channel's miniseries compared? The guy playing Feyd went on to be The Middleman, which had an episode loaded with Dune nods. P.S. Ages ago I said Walken should play Count Fenrig, so I feel partially vindicated. 😆 P.P.S. In the books Guild Navigators like Edric retained a somewhat humanoid form. villains.fandom.com/wiki/Edric

When it ended the theater was silent.......like people weren't sure what to think. It felt like if it was a WW2 movie you show the Saving Private Ryan D-Day landing..........then BAM! YOU ARE IN HITLERS BUNKER AND THE WAR IS OVER! Like woah, we missed some stuff in the middle. I was expecting an epic battle like the end of Return of the Jedi or something, didn't get it. Not a "bad" movie, but not as good as part 1.

I remember hearing the original Dune was crap but I thought it was actually better than the new one. Although I very much enjoyed the new one, haven't seen the 2nd yet.

Hellsing Ultimate (Download): A few years after the original 13-episode Hellsing series there was this 10-episode remake, which I figured I'd quickly watch in a day or 2... ...How wrong I was... This, as I found out, isn't a 20-minutes per episode TV-series, this is a 10-episode OVA with episodes running from 42 to 67 minutes a piece and they've been coming out at roughly 2 per year between 2006 and 2012 and they all look simply gorgeous. I can't believe this went under my radar for as long as it did. First 2 'episodes' are basically a retelling of the TV-series after which it takes quite a bit of a turn with Nazi vampires attacking London in what could probably be the bloodiest anime I have ever seen. For a while every new episode ups the bodycount, the gore and the action until the final 2 where things settle down a bit and become a lot more talky. It's fair to say this series took me completely by surprise. I really thought I would just be getting a visually upgraded remake of the first series but this was so much more than that. All the animation is superb, which isn't a surprise when you see the 'Madhouse' studio logo at the end of the credits, they have always been my favorite with stuff like Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and Redline to name but a few... The Flash (Bluray): Not gonna lie, I actually really like this movie. I know it had a difficult production and the lead actor turned out to be a complete asswipe which all helped to have it flop at the box office, but I have to admit I still like the way it turned out. Sure, some of the CG could have been better, but the rest, and especially Keaton Batman is pretty fun and exciting. DefCon-4 (Download): I remember renting this movie when I was in college and probably felt really disappointed afterwards. I certainly didn't look for it again afterwards. It's one of those typical knockoff movies that draws you in with amazing cover art and you only find out while watching it had nothing to do with the movie at all. This one is a prime example of that. I've attached a picture with the ship on the cover and the actual ship in the movie. There's also no desert; let alone a half-buried skeleton in a space suit. It's a low-budget Mad Max type affair and that's even very generous of me to compare it to that... Nowhere (Download/DVD): This and Gregg Araki's previous movie 'Doom Generation' are the quintessential Gen-X movies. It's 80s youth's 'Euphoria'. Just pretty young people fucking and getting fucked up. I'm still gay for James Duval. Masters of the Air (Download): This series concluded and it was pretty good. Nothing will ever rival Band of Brothers when it comes down to WW2 series again but this was did a solid effort from an angle we don't often get to see. If they decide to release it on physical media, I'm inclined to buy and rewatch... Attachments:

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (Bluray): Solid enough creature feature with a few standout scenes but also some dumb decisions, but still a good horror movie with an interesting monster.
Old Dads (Download): Funny movie by Bill Burr. There have been some decent comedies starring comedians recently.
Stopmotion (Download): Horror flick starring the same actress from 'Last Voyage of the Demeter' and directed by a dude who I knew from an ABCs of Death episode with some of the grossest stop-motion animation I've ever seen (D for Deloused from ABCs 2). There's some of that here as well as the main actress is the person making the animations. It was slow but pretty good, with a bunch of grossness.
Deadstream (Bluray): Great little 'found footage' flick about a youtube streamer spending a night in a haunted house. It's just a shame the Germans that made my bluray felt it was necessary to translate a bunch of screen text again. Every highlighted comment is in German as are the loading screens and camera names. It's not as bad as "Searching", which was unwatchable because every single on-screen text was translated, including all the browser windows, but it certainly is annoying. Guess I'll have to buy it again in the UK.

Gran Turismo (Bluray): Solid zero-to-hero effort that has all the clichés but also all of the emotional high and lows of the genre and for once it's about something that actually interests me.
Escape From New York (Bluray): A Carpenter/Russell classic that, while certainly showing it's age, manages to hold up really nicely.
Madame Web (Download): Not as bad as it was made out to be, at least not from a technical standpoint. It's not the worst movie ever by a long shot but it certainly wasn't good either. The biggest question is: why does this movie exist? Of all the IP out there, what made these characters worth spending 80 million dollars on? They're just not interesting or compelling in any way and, no, it's not because they're women. Hell, you'd been better off focusing on just 1 spider-woman and telling her story instead.

Halo Season 2 - Had no idea there was a season 2, looks like it's only 8 episodes and they are all out. Might have to go back and watch it again but I thought it was better than the first season, a lot more action and stuff going on. Also looks more like Halo this time, not to say the first season didn't, it's just that this one shows more.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Theater): Good movie. I haven't seen ANY of the new ghostbusters after the first two in the 1980s. I remember one of the new ones became a big target in the culture wars, I kept meaning to watch it and see if it was as bad as people say it is but never got around too it. I liked this one, after the reveal of the "big bad" it falls apart a bit, its not as scary as the anticipation. Kumail Ali Nanjiani was in this and I had no idea, he was funny, he will always be Dinesh from Silicon Valley to me.

The Laughing Policeman (Download): Early '70s cop thriller that was all the things you don't see anymore. It was racist, sexist, misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic and it was great, lol. It's a bit of a buddy cop movie with Walter Matthau as the stern older cop and Bruce Dern as the foulmouth hotshot younger one solving a mass shooting on a bus. It was slow, as these movies where but it works towards a conclusion that is satisfying enough. Lou Gossett Jr. has the best line in the movie: after he's just pushed a pimp to the floor who then reaches for something behind his back, he says: "Whatever you're reaching for better be a sandwich because you'll be eating it!"... It also has Walter Matthau slapping an uncooperative woman and Bruce Dern antagonizing a bunch of black dudes..
You'll Never Find Me (Download): Low budget Australian horror with 2 people in a trailer talking that was actually pretty good because of good cinematography and sound design. The story has been done before but it was acted pretty well so you don't really mind.
Swordfish (Bluray): Soon after downloading it a few months ago, I snagged it on bluray and finally got round to rewatching it. Holds up remarkably well.
Halo - Season 2 (Download): Better than the first season in every way. It finally looks and feels like Halo in some places although the most Halo-esque sequences (in the fall of Reach-episode) has Master Chief without his armor. D'oh! You almost had it right, almost. Final episode also introduced another Halo staple that was unseen until this point: the Flood.

Escape from L.A. (Bluray): Always liked this sequel that most people seem to hate. It is exactly the same movie just set in a different place with some good visual FX and some not so good but I like it all.
Eden Log (Bluray): Had a bit of luck with this one. I bought it on the Belgian Amazon thinking I'd picked the UK version (the movie is in French, so I need subtitles). Turns out it was the French one but quite surprisingly it came with Dutch subs. And not only that, the disc claims the movie was both shot in French and English, with the English version being a slightly different cut, which is also included on the disc. I haven't checked that out yet because why should I and I don't quite believe it either. Weirdly though, if you start the disc you have to choose either French or Dutch and depending on what you chose there the version of the movie that starts playing is either the French one or the English one and you have to have to look for the main menu button on your remote (or in my case the square on my PS3 controller to get the on screen controls) to change it because the pop-up menu does not have these options. Way to make it complicated... Anyway, interesting flick that I've seen quite a few times, goes exactly like a game. Dude wakes up in the dark with no memory, at the bottom of some installation which he has to explore upwards while looking out for roaming creatures.
Infinity Pool (Bluray): Brandon Cronenberg weirdness that isn't as good as his previous effort Possessor but is still all kinds of fucked up enough to hold my interest.
The Burning (DVD/Download): I took the DVD of this early '80s movie I'd never seen home from some movie quiz back in the day because there wasn't anything else I'd rather have (and because my buddies recommended it). It's a slasher, a genre I don't particulary care about, but this one is pretty good regardless. That's why I gave it another go in HD. I actually like the camp aspect of the movie more than the actual killing, lol. Guess I'm getting old, or maybe more in tune with the current times, when I feel the guys were being very pervy and/or pushy with the girls when they don't take no for an answer...
Cujo (Bluray): I took the DVD of this early '80s movie I'd never seen home from some movie quiz back in the day because there wasn't anything else I'd rather have and I remember liking it quite a bit. Managed to snag this reasonably cheap. Didn't remember the movie takes it time for as long as it does, with the iconic part only happening halfway in but even up to that point it's interesting. There's a whole lot of setting up/paying off going on throughout the movie, nothing comes out of nowhere, and the dog acting is superb. The tension in that second half is great... One question though: What's up with those ridiculous rubber bumper blocks European cars all seemed to have to have in the US around that time? The guy drives a Jaguar E-Type, one of the better looking cars ever made, but at the front and back there are these huge rubber blocks that I've seen on other (non-US) cars in other movies...

Pulp Fiction (Bluray): Felt it was time to finally show my kids one of the classic movies of all time. They already knew some of the lines because of memes and Fortnite dances, lol.
Dark City - Director's Cut (Bluray): Wish I'd never seen the theatrical cut and seen this DC the first time. The mystery is so much better in the DC.
The Island of Giant Insects (Download): Anime flick that's getting horrible reviews on the imdb and I'm not quite sure why. Sure, I've seen better movies as well, but it wasn't that awful. What it was however is incomplete. Feels like a failed series that never got completed but they cut whatever they already had into a movie. It's about these kids surviving a plane crash onto a remote island that's been taken over by, you guessed it, giant insects but at the end they're still on the island and there's a post-credits scene showing characters that weren't seen since the opening, hence: more to come (which doesn't seem like it's ever going to come). I didn't hate it, in fact, I liked most of it well enough...
Brain Dead (Download): Not the Peter Jackson one but a 1990 movie starring Bill Pullman and Bill Paxton that's a crazy trip or dream in which you never know what's really happening right until the end. Didn't know this movie existed until this weekend when I stumbled upon it by accident looking for the bluray of Peter Jackson's movie and at the same time someone uploaded it which I took as a sign to check it out. It was certainly interesting...

Helluva Boss - Seasons 1+2 (Download): Animated series that is still ongoing from the same creator as Hazbin Hotel, which is obvious to see. Same type of animation, also set in hell with musical numbers in just about every episode. It's being released on youtube so there's not a regular release schedule. Someone ripped all there is so far and made a collection of it, so that's what I've watched. I liked Hazbin Hotel better. This series is more uneven.
Parasyte: The Grey (Download): Never saw the anime but did seen the Japanese live-action movies a few times. Liked them well enough. Wondered if this Korean adaptation could be any good and yeah, it convinced me quite quickly. It's the same type of story but with different characters and the mutant this time isn't as easily accessible as it is in the original, where it is in the guy's hand and he can converse with it. The girl that only gets partially taken over in this isn't aware of it and can't talk to it directly, which makes for a nice mechanic...
Cast Away (Bluray): Tom Hanks is a really good actor and this movie is very well done. Long but never boring with a painfully realistic reunion at the end.
Invincible - Season 2 (Download): Or rather the final 4 episodes of season 2 that goes for an Empire Strikes Back ending. It's still a great series, obviously, but the wait inbetween parts of seasons is really annoying...

Boogie Nights (Bluray): I can't say I'm the biggest Paul Thomas Anderson fan but Boogie Nights is the one movie of his I've seen several times. It's funnier than his regular stuff and all the characters are great.
The Dark Backward (Download): RLM reviewed this movie a while ago. It's an early '90s movies starring Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton, whose lesser known work I've been seeing a lot in the past weeks. This is one of those movies that is just weird, with a weird premise (no talent comedian grows a 3rd arm out of his back) and exaggerated characters, but it's still kinda compelling to see what they can up with next. Kinda like a '90s Greasy Strangler.
Near Dark (Download/DVD): More Bill Paxton in this atypical vampire movie starring half the cast of Aliens. Seen it plenty times by now. Noticed how well the fire effects still looked compared to today's CGI fire...

Fallout (Amazon series) - Looks like they released all of season 1 at the same time (8 episodes), only seen the first episode and very much impressed. Started off kinda middling but got better, also the production value is great and it looks exactly like the Fallout games. They put lots of little and big details in it that will stand out to anyone who played those games. Looking forward to watching more. The Halo series also came to mind, I think it's just as good of an adaptation so far. *edit* After watching some more episodes, I think Fallout may be the best videogame adaptation so far.
*edit* Minor spoiler:
*edit* Just finished watching the 8th episode, overall I think it's a really good show and can't wait for season 2.
Watching the whole 1st season again.
Actually kind of in the mood to play a Fallout game again now, might even fire up 76.
One thing, it's a very violent show (probably same level of violence as the games including heads getting blown off) and may not be suitable for younger children to watch.

Wasn't too sure about the main character Lucy (Ella Purnell) at first but in the end, I think she was great in Fallout. Really seemed like she grew into the role throughout each episode, like a fresh vault dweller being hardened by the wasteland. Much like the games.

Dune - Part 1 (3D Bluray) Dune - Part 2 (Download)
While the movies are really good and visually striking, I can't but help thinking David Lynch told the same story in 1/3 of the time with more exciting action sequences and more memorable moments. The worms especially seem to be really underused here and I don't think I'll be quoting any of the lines anytime soon. If I didn't have that old version to compare it to, I think I would appreciate it more for what it did do than what it didn't do... ...like not even show a guild navigator.
The Hidden (Bluray): Classic '80s B-movie horror/scifi that holds up very well despite having a decidedly mediocre image quality on this Spanish bluray. I already had a HD version downloaded, I'll have to compare both before I decide to delete it or not.

Pearl (Bluray): The prequel to X, this time watched in chronological order which also means I follow it up with a better movie instead of the other way around, like last time. It's pretty good, but it's no X, which I love.
X (Bluray): See Pearl...
Zillion (Download): Belgian flick about the rise and fall of an infamous mega-disco in Antwerp in the late '90s directed by a guy we knew as a highschooler back in the movieboard days and used to make fun of during offline meetings of the members. He came a long way and is now a well respected director, this being his 3rd feature and his most succesful. It's an OK movie, about what I expected from a Belgian flick, saved entirely by an actor called Matteo Simoni who portrays an infamous porn producer called Dennis Black Magic who is all kinds of eccentric and shady.

A Cure for Wellness (Bluray): Didn't buy this movie or even keep the download after the first time I watched it but I figured I'd give it another shot when I needed a 3rd bluray to get a certain deal. It's a solid mystery thriller that maybe goes on a little too long for too little of a payoff but it certainly looks the part. I'd forgotton Mia Goth was in this as well. I've often wondered whether or not she's actually attractive, which she often is, especially in X, but then her face does things or you see her from a different angle. This movie makes it clear though: she isn't. She certainly looks the part in this movie, being a result of inbreeding, lol.
Shogun - Epi 1-6 (Download): Surprisingly compelling series that I expected to see 1 or 2 episodes of last night before moving onto something else and watching the rest of it during the week but it kept engaging me so I just kept starting the next episode until I ran out of time. I'll watch the remaining ones saturday night and then follow it up later this week with the last episode (which, to be honest I thought had already been aired, which is why I started watching in the first place).

Shogun - Epi 7-9 (Download): Less action than I would expect in the final couple of episodes, unless they saved it all for the last one which will be out later this week. So far it's been quite a good series indeed.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (Bluray): A descent into madness where every decision makes the situation worse, which makes for a good dramatic movie. Too bad the bluray wasn't of the same quality, with flickering lines of grain in the dark parts of way too many scenes. Quality control much?
Late Night with the Devil (Download): Mockumentary about a '70s late night talk-show that took things a little too far in the paranormal starring David Dastmalchian as the host. Neat little horror flick with a great finale.

The Final Countdown (1980) - Found this free to watch on Amazon, it's about the USS Nimitz getting caught in some kind of storm/portal or something and getting sent back to the day of the Pearl Harbor attacks. It was a fun "what if" kind of movie but they didn't go too crazy with it in the end. Not bad, found it enjoyable.

Monkey Man (Download): Simplest comparison: Indian John Wick. Dev Patel wants revenge for something that's gradually revealed throughout the movie and does so by beating up a lot of guys. Really well made movie that manages to stand next to recent revenge flicks like aforementioned John Wick. A lot of fun with memorable moments, like the Tuk Tuk chase. The closest comparison I could find is Ong Bak.
City Hunter (Download): Live-action adaptation of the classic manga/anime. The main guy is played semi-slapsticky by the guy that also played a similar slapsticky character in the silly underpants movie Hentai Kamen. He works really well in the role. The movie is a lot of fun with good action set pieces that sometimes remind of Jackie Chan's antics, aspecially the first battle sequence. I really enjoyed this one.
Beau is Afraid (Bluray): A remake of Ari Aster's own 7 minute short, only this time it's 3 hours, which is quite a long time for something as nightmarish as this. The first part especially is anxiety-inducing when he's leaving his apartment but then runs back in to pick something up he forgot and when he gets back to the door, someone's stolen his keys. Everything that can go wrong with him does and he keeps getting into stranger and stranger situations... ...for 3 hours. Not gonna lie, I found it strangely compelling and I certainly didn't hate the movie like most people seem to. Sure, it sometimes seems strange just for strangeness sake but I can't say I minded too much. I did have to look up at the end what the movie was actually trying to tell me, lol, but I certainly didn't have a bad time watching it.
Infested (Download): Aka Vermines, a French flick about a deadly spider infestation in a low-cost housing project, which is reminiscent somewhat of Attack the Block. While it runs a bit too long, the first half is really strong, setting up the place and the characters and introducing the spiders. It goes off the rails a bit towards the end and becomes somewhat convoluted and farfetched but there were enough great moments throughout to call this pretty good.
The Vagrant (Download): Seems like someone decided 2024 is all about remembering Bill Paxton with the 4th 90's Paxton movie in a short while to make it onto the sites and I've watched them all. This time it's The Vagrant about Paxton being terrorised by a, you guessed it... Fun flick, especially since you never know if it's really happening or just in his head. It's got this weird tone and I've never seen Michael Ironside tackle a comedic character before...
Shogun - Final Episode (Download): Good closure to a good series that doesn't go for the expected big battle but actually does something more clever for once. Liked the entire series a lot more than I expected I would.

Mulholland Drive (Bluray): My favorite Lynch movie if I'm not counting Dune, which he doesn't himself, and the Lynch movie that made me revisit other Lynch movies. I still don't know why half of the scenes are even in there, but I love them nonetheless.
The Nice Guys (Bluray): Ryan Gosling in his very best comedic performance in a pretty hilarious Shane Black movie.
Vampire Humaniste Cherche Suicidaire Consentant (Download): French Canadian flick about a girl vampire that doesn't want to kill people. It was OK, mildly comedic but I won't need to see it again.

I know I had seen "Quiet on the Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV" mentioned before but can't find it now.
Just got around to seeing it, I actually watched that show All That when I was a kid but ended up growing out of it around the time Amanda Bynes joined the show. I think my favorite from that show was always when Kel Mitchell pretended to be that old man yelling at kids.
Some messed up stuff for sure in this documentary, never would've guessed all that was going on.

Blood for Dust (Download): Perfectly average crime thriller about a down on his luck shlub getting suckered into transporting drugs. Doesn't do anything new or exciting but doesn't do anything particulary bad either. It's just all a bit slow and uninspired. All this I could tell from the imdb reviews and I still wanted to watch it...
The First Slam Dunk (Download): Anime about basketball that made me care so much more about basketball than I ever did before. It's completely straightforward, no superpowers or other shenanigans, just 1 game and not even a particulary important one, interspliced with flashbacks setting up the characters, all done in an appealing visual style that while it is cell-shaded 3D, doesn't look or move nearly as cheap as that style sometimes tends to do. Glad I have a new PC because the original file wouldn't play on my media player(s) and converting it on my old PC would've probably taken 6 hours, lol. It still took over an hour for a 2 hour movie however, but it turns out it was worth it.

The Bad Batch - Season 3 (Download): So this season and this series concluded with an extended episode. Like all the animated Star Wars series, this had its highs and lows but the lows were never as low or the highs as high as they were in Clone Wars. That being said, this final episode was pretty amazing. They even brought back the Zillo beast, which was kinda unexpected. They should give Filoni an animated show about Rogue Squadron next. With Omega saying she's going to join the rebellion, she could even be a recurring character. It's bound to be cheaper than a series or movie and they can tell more stories.

World's Greatest Dad - Found free to watch online, I'd seen it before but a long time ago. Robin Williams plays a failed writer whose teenage son accidentally kills himself in a very embarrassing way, so he stages it to look like a suicide and writes a fake note which ends up getting the attention of everyone in town with how well written and deep it is. Definitely a dark comedy, made me laugh but it was more sad than funny. The message in the end is definitely about loneliness and people who pretend to care when they really don't.
