Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 3D (Download): Nobody does 3D better than Guardians, it's just a shame it isn't getting released here like that. Last 10 or so MCU movies I've had to download to be able to see in 3D (I still bought the regular blurays as well, don't worry) but the fact they exist means they're being released somewhere. Probably the best movie of the last batch of Marvel movies (although I really loved Dr Strange and Spider-Man as well, come to think of it, Spider-Man is probably the best). and one of the few I regret not watching in the theatre, but the wait has become so short nowadays between releases it's not worth the effort. Makes me wonder what the last movie I actually went to was. I'm certain I've seen Dr Strange, but I also saw Thor with one of the kids and that came afterwards... Anyway, those fucking animals, man, they get me every time...
Shazam - Fury of the Gods (Download): Another superhero movie that's totally watchable though nothing special and I'd say it's one of the last ones from DC where they still made an effort in the CG department. Seems like following this one, they went for cheaper CG... ...although WW1984 was already kinda crappy, but that might have had other reasons. Anyway, OK movie, lot of fun, about as deep as a puddle but certainly more enjoyable than others.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury - Season 2 (Download): Well, this turned from a high school drama into a battle for corporate domination with some pretty cool mecha action in every episode. I ended up liking this series a lot more than I would have anticipated. The characters really evolve throughout the series and even though they're mostly all anime stereotypes in a mecha show, it was still nice to see. Also appreciated the way it looked. While the mecha must have been modeled in 3D, it never looked CG, it didn't even look cell-shaded, it looked as if they were drawn in 2D with a lot of shading and contrast. Very nice.
Masters of the Universe: Revolution - Part 1 (Download): After watching the first 5 episodes of the new (Kevin Smith helmed) series I regret not rewatching the previous series first (Revelations). It's just that when I finished Gundam earlier this week, I could just fit in those 5 episodes of MotU before the weekend and that was too convenient to pass up but I wouldn't have minded rewatching the entire thing. Guess I'll do that when the second part of this second series is released later this year. These episodes were pretty epic to be honest. Skeletor and He-Man are still in it but the world is just that much bigger this time around, with an actual alien invasion force that made for some really cool visuals plus you can hear Luke Skywalker and OG Captain Kirk have an argument inside Skeletor's head, which is something you don't get to experience every day, lol. I'm guessing the blowback for this one will be a little less severe than it was for the first part of the previous series, heh, with all the anti-woke snowflakes having a hissyfit over Teela...

The Beekeeper (Download): Fun action flick that doesn't do anything new and is a bit derivative of John Wick in trying to introduce some logistical system behind the killers but it's entertaining throughout even though the first half is better than the second and it all becomes a bit farfetched. Still it's an enjoyable romp.
And the 3rd episode of Masters of the Air was pretty epic.

The Naked Gun - From the Files of Police Squad (DVD): The eldest discovered Police Squad, which I'd put on his HDD a while ago already, and he didn't know there were movies about the same characters even though we'd already seen this one once upon a time, but I guess the kids were just too young when I showed it to them initially. So a rewatch was in order and it was a lot more succesful than the first time...
Saltburn (Download): I'd initially skipped it but then went back when I found out who made it (the same person who did 'Promising Young Woman' which I liked a lot). First thing I noticed was the aspect ratio, which for some reason was 4:3. Why she chose this format I can't say but it certainly didn't help. The movie was OK but a little too long. Didn't expect it ultimately went the way it went and I thought it was weird to have it become that in like the final 15 minutes or so. Won't spoil the twist.
Wil (Download): Belgian flick that can be found on Netflix about some policemen in Antwerp during the German occupation. This one was also in 4:3 incidentally, weird I'd end up with 2 movies in that format in the same night and I wasn't aware of either. Based on a book from a writer I respect (he's also a journalist for the paper I read) and directed by another guy whose work I respect (he directed a lot of Legion episodes). Starts strong with good performances but doesn't really go the way I'd hoped (although it probably is a lot more realistic than something like let's say Inglourious Basterds, but that doesn't mean I have to like it...

Hoops - Season 1 (Download): Animated show about a foulmouth basketball coach in a high school. It's only 10 episodes and apparently there's not going to be anymore since it's already a few years old by now, but it certainly wasn't bad. At least on the level with Paradise PD. The coach is voiced by Jake Johnson, the voice of Peter B. Parker from the Spiderverse animated movies.

Anatomie d'une Chute (Download): Aka Anatomy of a Fall, the most recent Golden Palm winner in Cannes and nominated for a couple of Oscar™s is a legal drama about a woman suspected of killing her husband, or was it really a fall? Usually Cannes movies and I don't really mix but this time I was willing to make an exception and I was correct to do so. It's a very solid legal drama, devoid of any grandiose Hollywood grandstanding, just a concise and interesting case that wasn't too long or too short at 2h20m. Solid flick.
Yakuza - Like a Dragon (Download): Didn't even know this existed until it showed up. It's a 2007 movie based on the Yakuza games, which I never played, so I would've skipped it were it not for the name of the director that stood out: Takashi Miike, Mr Ichi the Killer. So there was no chance I wasn't going to watch this. I don't know if it has any relation to the games or if the games are as comedic as this movie, but it was vintage Miike, minus the over-the-top violence maybe. Lots of funny and ridiculous moments, sometimes with the use of less than convincing CG, but that all adds to the fun. Surprisingly enjoyable. Still not going to play the games however...
Joe's Apartment (Download): A movie I'd seen before but apparently didn't like as much back then as I did last night. How could I have not have this on disc already? Crazy flick about a New York apartment filled with talking cockroaches and early CG that works well enough for what it is, but also tons of stop motion and live puppetry. I kinda loved it.

I think this started as a show on MTV. Early-Mid 1990s MTV took a lot of risks and tried all kinds of random shows like this and Liquid Television.....turns out they ended up almost flat broke from doing this after Beavis and Butthead ended so they switched to reality TV and TRL then eventually it's currently zombie form where it hasn't been culturally relevant since The Jersey Shore.

The Naked Gun 2 1/2 (DVD): More of the same just not as good. Smaller joke density and not as clever for the most part although there is still plenty to laugh at.
Dinner in America (Download): Redlettermedia spoke about this in their latest video so I had to check it out right away. Foulmouth punker hooks up with slow girl, hilarity ensues.
Hounds of Love (Download): Couple in Australia abducts, fucks and finally kills girls. Quality sleaze. Most of it is implied not shown but it's still a pretty heavy movie. Shot really well though, with some amazing high speed slow-motion footage, like the opening.
Blood Car (Download): Silly low-budget horror comedy that's all over the place. More clever at times than it should be, also pretty crude though and it does look as cheap as it is.
Holy Flying Circus (Download): Movie about Monty Python's Life of Brian movie release portrayed by actors that look a lot like the 70s Pythons, playing most of the parts themselves, intercut with animated sequences. Pretty clever and amazing likenesses, especially Palin and Cleese. Too bad someone took the German release for this which meant all on-screen text was done in German, which sucks balls.

Hazbin Hotel - Season 1 (Download): Animated show I went in with very low expectations, thinking I might not even make it through, because of how the screenshots made it look all kiddy and cutesy and there were musical numbers. While all of this is true, the story about Satan's daughter starting a hotel in hell with the intent to redeem souls and heaven not having it is actually pretty darn good and keeps getting better as the season goes on and more things are revealed. There are even some pretty kickass musical numbers (always 2 per episode) and it's a lot more raunchy and violent than the designs make you think just seeing them as screenshots. I guess seeing the A24 loga at the start should have been an indication it wasn't just going to be a standard kiddy cartoon.

Fast & Furious 9 (Bluray): What a silly movie... ...and yet... ...nah, it's just silly allround. Last time I did a watch of the entire series up to and including this one, which was new at the time and I probably was up to speed with all the characters. Now I was wondering why they had Charlize Theron in a box, why this or that character popped in for a scene. But I certainly wasn't going to watch the entire series again just for that. One more to go because I also bought Fast X, lol, why do I put myself through this willfully?

Fast X (Bluray): ROFL, and I thought 9 was silly... That being said, any scene with Jason Momoa is gold. He's hamming it up completely, saying all his lines with such great comedic timing and looking like an absolute madman. John Cena too is great in a more comedic role than the previous movie. But anything and everything that goes on is the most farfetched and unbelievable way of doing things... ...and this is only part 1. What the hell is up with these final installments of movie series always having to split up the finale?
Here for Blood (Download): First half of this lower budget home invasion horror comedy is a bit light on the horror and comedy but from about the halfway mark both ramp up considerably which results in an over-the-top bloody gorefest that I certainly didn't mind watching. If they'd gotten to that part sooner and cut some 15 minutes out of the first half, this would've been pretty great.

Hellsing - Entire Series (Download): The original early 2000s series, which I'd never seen. Maybe an episode way back in the day when this stuff was harder to find but certainly not the whole thing. It was pretty good. Animation did look cheaper than it does in the movies or OVAs from that time though. Everything involving the main characters and the action looked good but there was certainly some money/time saving going on in some scenes. Along the way I started wondering if the guy from Devil Man had anything to do with it because the grins on the vampire's faces looked very familiar and it turns out he did, heh. Apparently the 'Ultimate Hellsing' remake is even better but I came across the OG first so I decided to check that out first.

True Detective: Night Country - Season 4 (Download): Binged this last night. While I liked parts of it, it certainly wasn't up to par with the first season, or even the third. It was certainly OK and more than watchable, I'd say it's even better than a lot of other stuff out there but the benchmark of the first season is just incredibly high. Just a tad too many visions and native mumbo jumbo (what's up with all series nowadays going with the native-angle?). Main story was decent and so was the conclusion and Jodie Foster was doing a great job but maybe it shouldn't have been called True Detective, just Night Country...
Eating Miss Campbell (Download): Watchable Troma movie that at least didn't look cheap or like it was shot in someone's house with a phone. Cinematography and acting was pretty good for a low budget movie and it had some meta jokes but ultimately it wasn't as good as I had hoped. The gore could have been better and more plentiful but the tits were nice at least. There were even some real ones, which is rare in these types of movies. They tend to bring out the botched porn stars usually. Not so much here though.

Having grown up in Alaska and worked a variety of jobs in the community with a lot of contact with the Native Alaska community I am curious if its annoying cheesy crap or realistic native cultural traditions and such. Even Native Alaskans find token representations more condescending then positive. I still haven't seen this season, was waiting for it to end, my mother tried to get into it but she couldn't get into it, and she said "I'm not watching Jodi Foster have sex with anyone" lol. Pretty much every single movie or TV show about Alaska is way off the mark. City or rural.

I don't think you're going to like it then, lol. It'll probably piss you off...
Dogman (Download): New Luc Besson movie with strong acting by Caleb Landry Jones, but the movie is a weird beast that's a bit all over the place. Not sure what to make of it.
The Zone of Interest (Download): New Jonathan Glazer movie, in German, about the family of Auschwitz camp commander Rudolf Höss who's living a carefree life right next to the death camp. Another weird one for sure but intriguing nonetheless. The constant droning of machinery, gunshots and screams in the background of every shot is disconcerting (and unpleasant if you're suffering from tinnitus. It was at a frequency that really triggers it for me, opening and closing music too). Wife of the commander is the same actress from 'Anatomy of a Fall'. Looks like she's having a strong year in acting.
Slotherhouse (Download): Slasher movie in which the killer wreaking havoc in a sorority house is a 3-toed sloth. The sloth is a puppet throughout the movie, which is just great. So sure, it's a stupid movie, I mean, read the description, but it's quite entertaining whenever the sloth is doing its thing. Pretty sure they thought of a title first and then made a movie about it, but it could have been a lot, lot worse. At least it looked like a proper movie, with actual cinematography and decent enough acting.
And then I also watched the latest episode of 'Halo', which almost had everything right for once. Actually looked like it was based on a game know for shooting stuff. Now all they had wrong is they didn't have him in his armor, wtf? You had one job...

As I've often said: Sometimes you just need a new format to rediscover a movie... Case in point, these 4 I've seen last on DVD. Amazon had a sale on backcatalogue movies. 6 for €40, which nowadays is a real good deal. Snagged up 12 to replace the DVDs.
Insomnia (Bluray): One of Nolan's lesser known movies but it's a solid cop thriller nonetheless. Al Pacino looks so tired, lol.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (Bluray): This one is still as awesome as ever. I don't understand the low imdb score at all. It's just a fun adventure movie with amazing visuals. Glad I got to experience it again after all this time.
Red Planet (Bluray): Not as great, this one, but still watchable. I've always liked Mission to Mars better but it's still watchable. Most of the FX hold up as well, especially the robot.
Black Rain (Bluray): One of Ridley Scott's lesser known movies but it's a solid cop thriller nonetheless. I remember this looking absolutely awful on DVD but the bluray is fairly decent for a movie that has been given no additional attention. Photography is great, every scene is filled with moving lights, smoke and wet surfaces that makes it really stand out from the usual fare. It's Blade Runner without the futuristic stuff. One thing I noticed on the imdb: All the American actors are still alive while almost all the Japanese have already passed away. Mmmh...

One thing I noticed on the imdb: All the American actors are still alive while almost all the Japanese have already passed away. Mmmh... Nice! Fantastic performance by Robin Williams in Insomnia, and the deviousnsss of his character served as a bellows to stoke the dormant fire of Pacino's nearly totally burned out detective. Maura Tierney as always is cute, and the Native American cop also plays the cop in Corner Gas. He is solid. Hillary Swank is adorkable. Agree about Sky Captain, it has a great energy and one all but expects Captain America of the WWII era to show up, along with his crew from his first film. With the Japanese Cast of Black Rain I'll wonder if cigarette smoking was a factor. Not all that long ago a Japaese PM boasted of his smoking five packs a day being very patriotic, given the high taxes on them. Still a Mad Men culture well into the 90s.

With the Japanese Cast of Black Rain I'll wonder if cigarette smoking was a factor. Imdb sometimes lists the cause of death. I noticed a lot of cancer. When the movie came out, the atom bombs were dropped only 40 years earlier. The main bad guy, the young one, died a year after the movie came out from cancer. 2010 - The Year We Make Contact (Bluray): Underrated sequel to 2001 with some great '80 special FX and a pretty decent story. Blazing Saddles (Bluray): From my year of birth, a comedy that holds up tremendously. I know it by heart by now, I've seen it so often, but I should show it to the kids someday.

Insomnia (Bluray): One of Nolan's lesser known movies but it's a solid cop thriller nonetheless. Al Pacino looks so tired, lol. I liked the Nordic original every tho it's much lower budget. They removed some sex related stuff from the American version because they thought American audiences are more prudish. Also I have black out blinds everywhere I live even tho I haven't lived in Alaska in years. Forrest Gump (Bluray): One of those movies you can't but love because it's all just so endearing. Tom Hanks is great, Gary Sinise is great and all the FX shots are really well done.
Van Helsing (Bluray): Silly big-budget nonsense with FX that don't quite hold up anymore during some scenes but it's still watchable enough, just leave your brain at the door.
Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny (Download): Not being really familiar with the band or anything they've put out on video, I went into this movie quite green. It was enjoyable enough with a couple of really funny moments and songs.

War of the Worlds (Bluray): Long time since I saw this last but another welcome revisit. Actually kind of love this flick. Great FX that still hold up really well despite the movie suffering from a somewhat digital look that was really noticeable in the earlier daytime scenes. But top notch alien invasion shenanigans...
Ricky Stanicky (Download): John Cena once again steals the show in a comedic role as a down on his luck actor that gets to play the made up friend of 3 friends that invented the character of Ricky Stanicky to get themselves out of trouble. Laughed out loud several times, which is a plus in a comedy.
Pineapple Express (Download): Speaking of laughing out loud, this movie certainly holds up as well. Came out at the height of the Apatow stoner comedy era in the early 2000s with a bunch of frat pack regulars all doing what they do best.
