The Iceman Confessions - Secrets of a Mafia Hitman (Download): Very matter-of-fact recollections of a guy that supposedly killed up to a 100 people as a contract killer (and an all-round murderer if someone just happened to end up on his bad side). The ease with which he tells it all is astonishing... If this is the original HBO special from like 1991 I saw this as a kid. The dude is also a pathological liar. He says that he rolled up to a car at a stoplight, pointed a rifle/shotgun at the car next to him, and blew the dudes head off. Years ago someone went through this documentary and tried to confirm facts and if someone got their head blown off at a stoplight you would think there would be a record of it. They could find no trace.

Carol & the End of the World - Season 1 (Download): Slow burn animated series about a depressed woman in the last 7 months before the planet will collide with a planet killing asteroid. Slowly she opens up and starts to transform the people around her. It's a quirky little animated series with a lot of heart that ends with a fantastic episode that might leave you in tears. I can't say it's really for me overall but it certainly was worth the journey of getting to that final episode...
Geostorm 3D (3D Bluray): Bought a couple of movies I didn't even bother downloading when they first made the rounds. This is the first of them and it's a by the numbers disaster movie with some amazing CG and a nonsensical story that's just acceptable enough to not become annoying. 3D was nice too, especially in the space sections.
Paradise Lost 2: Revelations (Download) Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (Download): Well, thanks to the attention these documentaries garnered worldwide at least some justice was served eventually even though it still was bittersweet. Even more spectacular than the main story of the convicted (and the murdered) kids was the arc the (step)father of one of the victims went through. From being out for blood in the first part to becoming a suspect in the second part (and actually being put in the position the convicted kids were put in with desperately trying to prove his innocence) to finally seeing reason and have the facts convince him he was wrong the entire time AND admitting it, which makes him a bigger man than I would have thought possible after seeing him behave in the first two docs...

Fall (Bluray): Another one I skipped on purpose, thinking it would be crap even though I've seen plenty of these types of movies and I've even liked some of them quite a bit. Here 2 girls are stuck on top of a huge radio tower in the middle of nowhere. I'd expected them to at least try and get out of there but they actually did very little at all. Not very realistic of believable and I should've gone with my gut instinct on this one. At least it was relatively cheap.
Brawn: The Impossible F1 Story (Download): 4-part documentary about the 2009 F1 season when a team that lost its owner and most of its funding still managed to become world champion. Presented by Keane Reeves starring quite a few big F1 names.

Rebel Moon: Part One - New sci-fi film from Zack Snyder, was reading that it started off as a Star Wars film, but when it was rejected he re-wrote it and made it its own thing. Haven't seen it yet but it's definitely on my list of stuff to watch.

Rebel Moon: Part 1 - A Child of Fire (Download): Can't say I hated it, which I certainly did the previous Zack Snyder Netflix movie (Army of the Dead). Is it the best movie ever? Certainly not but I for one can enjoy a big budget space opera so to say this was right up my alley isn't too far off. There are too many characters, most that don't have anything to do in this movie yet. Hopefully they'll be used in any sequels (if those happen, which is always the big question in these types of Netflix endeavours). One more thing though: Spaceships. Why apparently is George Lucas the only one that can pick space ships designs that I love? The ships in this were so generic, as are the non-legacy ships in the non-Lucas Star Wars, yet my house is filled with ships from the movies he was involved with, even the prequels... I heard there is supposedly an R-rated director's cut on the way too. Well poop, guess I'll have to watch it again then. If I had known that I might have waited (I have enough other shit to see as it is).

I also watched just the PG-13 one that they released. Kinda fell asleep watching it so I'll need to try again, saw at least the first half and was enjoying it okay. Zack Snyder has said the R-rated director's cut has a lot more going on.

Blue Eye Samurai - Season 1 (Download): This year's animated hype following last year's Arcane, which I've seen it compared to more than once and which I also didn't seem to like quite as much as the general public. It already had a lot to overcome right from the start in my opinion: 1. I don't like this kind of 3D animation anymore, if I ever did, I've certainly grown past it by this point. I don't like how it looks or how it moves and this show certainly didn't pursuade me otherwise. 2. English... The voice acting was already pretty crappy at times but the fact it's only in English and not in Japanese for a story set exclusively in Japan, dealing with a distinct Japanese problem was a gigantic hurdle for me. 3. I can't say I particulary cared for any of the characters or their problems It just missed that certain ingredient that would make it stand out for me. I can see the appeal for the regular folks because it's pretty generic but for me it's missing an angle or quirkiness that would make it stand out. I've seen too much amazing animation to be wow-ed by this particular example. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad or anything, I wouldn't have finished it if it was, I just don't seem to like it quite as much as the rest of the world does. I'd watch a second season... (...fuck, that's another thing: you can't have this simple a story wrapped up in the 6 hours you already had available?), but I certainly won't be rewatching the first.
A Disturbance in the Force (Download): Documentary about the Star Wars X-mas Special that was pretty informative and amusing.
Violent Night (Bluray): This is the X-mas movie I forced the family to watch this year and I knew that would be the case since I saw it last year around this time. Basically Die Hard with Santa in the John McClane part, super violent and quite funny. I think they enjoyed it, lol...

Last Stop Larrimah (Download): Sorta True Crime documentary about a murder, scratch that, a disappearance rather, in a tiny Australian town with only 12 inhabitants and one of them has got to be the killer. Turns out they almost all hate each other for all kinds of reasons. Quite amazing really how petty people can be even all the way out there in the middle of nowhere and also how ugly just about all of them are, lol.
What If...? - Season 1 (Download): With episodes from season 2 being released every day for the past week, what better time to revisit the first season first. Most of it is good to great with a couple of amazing episodes, especially the Dr Strange one.
Thanksgiving (Download): An Eli Roth movie that doesn't suck or isn't at least underwhelming? It's been a while, hasn't it?, but this slasher was actually pretty good, even for someone that doesn't particulary care for slashers. Interesting enough story and quite a bit of graphic gore, just what the doctor ordered...

Demons (1971 Japanese film): I was reading reddit, someone mentioned this as a great lesser known Japanese horror film, and its on YouTube. I liked it, very dark. Reminded me a lot of Eraserhead, not in the plot just in the way its filmed and overall tone.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (Download): While it isn't as good as the first, I'd expected it to be a lot worse. It was funny and entertaining and I couldn't really as for more. Instead of a WW2 escape movie, this one was more of a James Bond/Heist movie.
Disenchantment - Seasons 3-5 (Download): Don't know these seasons are being numbered really, because I had 2 seasons of 20 episodes and then the new one was called season 5 and on the imdb they got split up into 5 seasons of 10 episodes. Anyway, I (re)watched the last 30 episodes. I've always liked this series but I am glad they managed to get to a satisfying ending that ties up most storylines nicely.
Beavis & Butthead - Season 4 (Download): More of the same nonsense, now with more and better animation compared to those first seasons. Still picking up a bunch of songs along the way. It's looking like I'll finish watching all seasons because it's a lot more interesting than I could've hoped for when I first downloaded them...

^lol I always remember this one episode of Beavis and Butthead where they thought beards would make them attractive to women, but they can't grow beards so they cut off hair from their heads and glued it to their faces. Then they went to the mall and tried to hit on women and they have hair stuck to their hands with glue too, saying "DAMN we're smooth!"
Looks like it's season 5 episode 3, Beard Boys
*edit* also wow, had no idea season 2 of What If is out, watching that asap.

What If...? - Season 2 (Download): More of the same, obviously, yet somehow not as great as that first season. The arc that bound all of them together wasn't as strong this time around but there were still good episodes in the bunch. In fact, none of them were bad it just felt more like they catered to whoever they could still afford to voice the characters to pick from the line-up.
The Accountant of Auschwitz (Download): Documentary about the trial of a 90+ year old camp guard during WW2. Fascinating. Even when a former guard of a death camp testifies to what went on there holocaust deniers still refuse to believe him, lol. What will it take then?

The Fabelmans (Bluray): Another movie I passed by originally but then when I quickly needed a 3rd movie to get a 3 for €XX deal, I snagged it because there wasn't anything I rather wanted and I thought: 'It's Steven Spielberg, how bad can it be?'... And it was pretty good indeed. Maybe not a movie to rewatch often, but nevertheless a pretty solid coming-of-age drama about the life of the master himself. Flew by even at 2h30m. Never realised before watching Seth Rogen was in it either.
Beavis & Butthead Do The Universe (Download): Solid nonsense in long form.
Eyeborgs (Download/DVD): A movie I'd been wanting to rewatch for a while now but kinda was waiting for a HD version to show up, which it finally did. Snagged it, watched it. It's a great story, one that has only gotten more poignant as the years went by and technology caught up. It's from 2009 but it deals with AI and surveillance and it has a really neat plot. The script and the FX aren't really that great though, it could use a bigger budget and tighter script, but it's amazing how the story is becoming more and more of a reality.

Cashback (Download/DVD): Just about the only 'romantic' movie I can stomach. Can't remember how I got turned onto this one, might have been a blind purchase at one time or another, maybe based off the cover I really dug the voice-over, reminded me so much of the one in the poetic walking sim 'Dear Esther' I actually looked up if it was the same person (it wasn't). His dulcet voice is really soothing. Another one I had to wait for a HD version to rediscover.

Dungeons & Dragons - Honour Among Thieves (Bluray): Surprisingly fun movie that holds up on a second viewing. This time I also noticed that during the arena games, the other group that makes it to the end are the characters from the '80s cartoon series, which I watched quite a bit back in the day.
Mad Fate (Download): New movie from the director of Limbo, the amazing Chinese black & white serial killer thriller which I absolutely love, so when that guy made a new flick I knew I had to see it. Let's say that if Limbo was 'Donnie Darko', Mad Fate clearly is 'Southland Tales', an insane, inexplixable mess of a movie that is nevertheless intriguing, but you wouldn't call it good by any means. It's all about this fortune teller that tries to avert people's deaths by influencing their feng shui, a serial killer, a guy destined to become a killer and a woman destined to become a victim. Over-the-top acting by the main character does little to help take this mess seriously. I wanted to like it but I don't think I can...
Beavis & Butthead Do America (DVD): Huh-huh-huh-huh I am Cornholio, I need some TP for my bunghole... Are you threatening me?
Rampage 3D (3D Bluray): Another blind purchase of a movie I purposely passed by when it came out. Think I saw a trailer in a theatre once and decided it wasn't for me... ...OK, I'll admit it, I was entertained. Good use of 3D and fairly convincing CG made this farce actually enjoyable to watch even though it was all pretty dumb.
Narc (Bluray/Download): Even though I have this on bluray (and DVD) I wanted to see if this HD download was any better quality because I remember the (Dutch) bluray being particulary crappy. I'm not certain it was. Movie is still solid though.
Pantheon - Season 1 (Download): Forget Blue Eye Samurai, this is the series that deserves all the praise. It doesn't look special, just your typical American/Korean 2D animation, but the plot is really great. It's all about this 'uploaded intelligence' and cloning and the consequences of doing that. Really smart and mature... ...and largely overlooked it seems. I rewatched season 1 in preparation for season 2 which was already released some time ago but went completely under the radar. I haven't heard a single thing about it anywhere and that's a real shame because it's one of the best animated things to come out of the US.

Pantheon - Season 2 (Download): I was kinda worried how they were going to be able to live up to the first season and how they were going to stretch this for another 8 episodes but by god, they fucking blew it out of the park with this one. All of it is great but the finale is simply beyond epic. There's a complete switch in the second to last episode that's already unexpected and amazing but then that final episode is just fucking mindblowing in scope and I can't believe I haven't heard anyone mention it anywhere. It's probably the best thing I've seen in 2023 (even though I watched it in the first week of 2024, lol). Deserves so much more attention than it's gotten. This and Scavenger's Reign are the best animated things I've seen all year and neither of them were anime. That's insane... To Catch a Killer (Bluray): Still an awful title for a great cop movie with some splendid performances and well designed scenes of murder and mayhem. Parasite Dolls (DVD): Anime I break out every so often about a sort of Blade Runner-esque police force dealing with malfunctioning androids. 3 30-minute stand-alone episodes that are worth watching. Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia (Download): Disappointing movie about the 1983 rally championship that had all the ingredients to become Rush or Ford v Ferrari but failed on all accounts. Didn't even manage to make rally seem exciting or explain it properly but the nail in the coffin was the statement at the end that while it was based in reality, it was so manufactured it couldn't even be "considered a faithful description of the facts" (their words). If you're going to invent stuff anyway, please invent more exciting stuff. The worst 2024 movie I've seen to date

Freak Brothers - Season 2 (Download): Saw the first season of this but I didn't particulary like it and I didn't hang on to it either but I still went ahead and watched this second one. I didn't hate this one to be honest. A lot of it made me laugh.
Robodoc: The Creation of Robocop (Download): Great 4-part documentary series about Robocop. At almost 5 hours, it's pretty extensive and everything you wished they'd talk about, they do.

Finally got around to watching more What If season 2, I think the Iron Man episode was my favorite, and it was great that they got Jeff Goldblum to voice The Grandmaster. Also was cool how it explains how Iron Man is allied with Gamora in some alternate universe from the first season.
Also I agree, didn't seem as good as the first season. Still not bad though.

Society of the Snow - Very harrowing survival story about the Uruguayan plane crash in the Andes mountains in 1972. 33 out of 45 initially survived after the crash but when they were finally rescued after 71 or 72 days, 16 were left. After the crash many died from their injuries, from exposure to the extreme cold, and/or from starvation and malnourishment. All in all I thought it was a very good movie that tells this story very well. The survivors unfortunately had to resort to cannibalism to survive, then the news twisted it into a media circus after the remains were discovered near the site, which I can't help but wonder what those news reporters would've done in the same situation. One of the survivors of the crash died because he refused to eat human flesh, something tells me those spoiled news reporters would've been even faster to resort to cannibalism.
There's a much older movie called "Alive" from 1993 with Ethan Hawke about the same story, been a while since I saw it but will probably watch it again to see how it compares. Also while they were taking shelter inside what was left of the plane fuselage, it got hit by at least 1 avalanche that packed it full of snow and killed 8 more people.
*edit* Thought they were both equally good, the newer one does show more stuff though. Like how the guy on the other side of the river threw them a rock with a pencil and paper tied to it, so they could write a message and throw it back.

Mission to Mars (Download/DVD): I've always liked this movie and I don't really understand why it sits at a mere 5.7 on the imdb, which is the exact same score as Red Planet, a somewhat schlocky action flick whereas this is a lot more serious scifi with enough going on to keep it entertaining.
Self Reliance (Download): The first 2024 movie I'll have forgotten all about at the end of the year. Interesting idea (guy will get a million $ if he survives being hunted but he can't be touched when he's not alone) that twists into some sort of satire or metaphore that either wasn't very good or I'm just not smart enough to understand. I'm leaning towards the former.
Destroy All Neighbors (Download): This silly splatter horror comedy was more up my alley. It has Alex Winter covered up in rubber appliances, playing Vlad, the neighbour from hell that tortures the main character until he confronts him and ends up decapitated, Vlad that is. That doesn't stop him from haunting the protagonist though... and more (accidental) death follow. It's all ludicrous and silly but also a lot of fun in its execution with practical gore and FX...
Timescape (Download): Aka The Grand Tour, which I could've sworn I had on DVD but it's not in my DVD Profiler or among the DVD's I still have sitting on shelves so I guess not. It's Riddick director David Twohy's debut and stars Jeff Daniels as a guy that finds out the people staying in his hotel are time travelers that are there for a reason. Fun time travel romp that oozes the '90s...

Managed to clean up the backlog a little last night with a couple of flicks I gathered a while ago already...
Lord of War (Download/DVD): I even have this on bluray as well, it came in a collection, but it's such an awful version (wrong aspect ratio, compression artefacts all over the place) I never wanted to watch it again. This has none of these flaws so I could just enjoy it for what it was, which is a solid movie with an unlikely anti-hero.
Angel Heart (Download/DVD): It's been a while since I saw this but I did remember the twist, which made me look at it differently. Nice clean-up job on this remastered version as well, movie probably never looked better.
Altered (Download/DVD): Above average creature feature by one of the Blair Witch guys. Great practical gore, neat monster. It's about these guys capturing an alien 15 years after being abducted as children and not all of them making it out alive.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters - Season 1 (Download): Guess I forgot to post about this. It ended last friday. I certainly didn't mind watching it. It was nice to see Kurt Russell again. There were good and lesser episodes and it squarely falls in the realm of why I prefer movies over series... Just because you can tell more story because you have 8 hours instead of 2, it's not always worth doing so. That being said, I watched it week after week instead of binging it and I never thought I wasted my time...

Fargo - Season 5 (Download): So I had figured I'd space this new season out over a few days but I ended up binging it anyway. I'd expected it to be pretty decent at least, but it was once again pretty fucking great. Fargo never does the obvious and keeps surprising you at every turn. Jon Hamm is pretty great as the main baddie but the one I was most impressed with was Joey Keery as his asshole son. Also: the Moonk character could probably carry a spin-off series...
The Marvels (Download): The most hated of all the marvel movies was obviously cut down a great deal, clocking in at 1h45m credits included, which made for a rather messy start to the whole thing in an effort to get to some action quicker it seems. But once it got going I actually rather enjoyed it, especially the character of Kamala Khan who was really charming in her Captain Marvel fanboism. It lacked a good villain but it was also never boring. End credits were really cool and so was the post-credits scene.
Reacher - Season 2 (Download): This ended as well. I'd seen the first season, which started strong but then went on for too long and this second season was more of the same. Didn't need to be as long as it was and with Reacher now just being part of a team meant there was even less focus on him just fucking people up. It was all very watchable but I don't think it'll stick with me for very long.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Bluray): Watching this set off a full night of animation and a much needed clearance of some backlog that had been clogging up disc and shelf space alike. Fun flick that at least doesn't look like your regular CG animation which I'm pretty tired of and have been for years. It's also pretty funny and pretty short with good action beats so easy to like and easy on the eyes.
Deep Sea (Download): This Chinese CG animated flick has been sitting here since june. The screenshots looked amazing but I still couldn't get myself to start watching it. First off: it does look amazing, every other shot looks like an impressionist painting with ridiculous amounts of colour and fine detail, like single pixels worth of details. It's all about this girl falling overboard on a cruise during a storm and getting picked up by a restaurant submarine populated by marine creatures. So yeah, it's basically Spirited Away. Despite looking amazing, it is just so busy and crowded during every single shot and scene it does start to become tiring and for a while there I was kinda starting to think it might not be a good as I'd hoped and I'd just finish watching and be done with it... ...but then they really stuck the landing and it had me in tears at the end.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Bluray): Sometimes you have to wonder why you waited as long as you did to rewatch a movie. It didn't take more than a few minutes to be impressed by this movie all over again. I was wondering why I didn't remember the ending though and then it ended with a 'to be continued'... ...right, part 1 of 2, that's why I didn't rewatch it earlier, I was waiting for part 2, lol. Oh well, movie is good enough to rewatch again (and again, and again)...
Ruben Brandt, Collector (Download): Another movie that looks like a painting, literally though, it's all about paintings. All the characters look like they stepped out of a cubist painting and it's all about stealing artworks from all over the globe. It was OK.

Misfits - British show I'd heard of before but never thought to check it out. By the last 2 seasons, it seems like there are no cast members other than a few from the first 2-3 seasons anymore. Pretty funny and great characters though, it's about this electrical storm that happens in this town, and people in the town start exhibiting superpowers of different natures, like some people get telekinesis or the ability to rewind time or resurrect the dead, things like that. Some abilities are really weird, like a zoo gorilla becomes human, and there's a guy who can control only dairy products with his mind. Also it deals with a group of people doing community service, hence the name of the show. Also the people on the show sure do screw a lot.
*edit* Watched to the end, all in all liked it. They left the whole electrical storm thing unexplained in the end but that's okay.

Echo - Season 1 (Download): The new Marvel series was obviously cut to shit, which resulted in quite a messy start to it all and an even shorter ending. The best parts by far was everything involving Kingpin. Vincent d'Onofrio embodies that character perfectly and all his scenes were really great. Daredevil shows up for a minute or so in the first episode never to be seen again and there's a quick flashback of Hawkeye (as Ronin, from the Hawkeye series). They tried to be a bit more mature like the Netflix Marvel series but honestly, it wasn't that interesting (except for Kingpin scenes) and it really suffered from being cut down...

Masters of the Air - Episode 1+2 (Download): The new Spielberg/Hanks WW2 series focuses on the war in the skies. First 2 episodes were pretty good but to be honest, I still prefer the 1980's movie Memphis Belle. There are shots in this series that are better than the aging optical FX of Memphis Belle, but the real planes in that movie still outshine the CG ones in this series. So far there hasn't been a lot more in this series than was in that movie. I'm sure they'll go a lot deeper in the rest of the series (there are black pilots in the opening credits so we'll probably see some Tuskagee Airmen eventually) and I'll be there for it every friday...
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (Download): Just like the Marvels it wasn't the best movie ever but I'd also be lying if I said I regretted watching it. I never had to look at the runtime or got bored by it. It's all silly and just like The Marvels the bad guy is just someone out for revenge but it was kinda fun. Dunno, guess I didn't expect anything and was pleasantly surprised it wasn't godawful...
The Congress (Download): Strange movie by the guy that did 'Waltzing with Bashir'. First half is Robin Wright in live action, playing a version of herself, that eventually agrees to get scanned for use in future films, which makes the movie all of a sudden seem very current despite already being 10 years old, and in the second half she's animated and the movie takes a weird turn into a kind of Matrix/Roger Rabbit version of reality that's quite confusing and pretty hard to follow. It looks interesting and colourful but the motivations and dream-logic aren't always clear. But it was intriguing enough to keep watching regardless.
Badland Hunters (Download): Korean scifi action flick that was a lot smaller in scope than expected but I still dug it for what it was. Decent enough action in an unspectacular but serviceable plot. Not quite Mad Max but easy enough to sit through.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury - Season 1 (Download): Rewatch of the first season to follow-up with the second later this week. It's a mix between a high school drama and mecha action with the high school part not being too annoying to get in the way of some decent mecha battles. Sure the main character is kind of annoying and her stammering can be a tad too much at times but it keeps taking interesting turns for me to remain invested in wanting to find out more...
