The Defiant Ones: Damn. If you love 1990s music this whole documentary is amazing. I sat down to see the first episode out of curiosity and have been watching it for 4+ hours now. Probably the best music documentary I have ever seen.

Pitch Black (Bluray): Another spaceship crash movie I watched with the kid to introduce him in the Riddick universe. I'll probably force the other movies on him soon, lol.
Ghost in the Shell (Download): Not the complete trainwreck I feared but still pretty hard to properly like. They stayed true to the source material for a lot of things, like how boring it is (I'm not a big fan of that first anime) but most of it was for cosmetic purposes. That being said, I though the world looked really bad, not just tacky, just plain-bad-CG-bad at times. There was one establishing shot where they didn't have all those ridiculous holographic ads going on and that looked so much better. Anyway, made it through pretty easily, didn't particulary like it but certainly didn't outright hate it either. MEDIOCRE! I guess is what I'm saying...
Oh right, best part of the movie by far and a glimpse of what could have been if they maybe kept it a Japanese production: Takeshi Kitano. He was great and so were about all the scenes he was in...

Alien: Covenant (Theatre): Horrible, hated it and couldn't wait for it to be over. Took me about 15 minutes to realise it wasn't going to be any good when the new crew turned out to be even dumber than the Prometheus crew. Hard to believe the same guy did the original Alien because he's seemed to have forgotten everything about what made that movie so great. Here and there were moments that were good, but they were instantly flooded by another dumb scene, often featuring some or other horrible CGI creature. No, sorry, I'm ranking this way at the bottom of the Alien list, maybe just above AVP2 but at least that had some campy fun. This was just horrible. Should've gone to Life instead. Better a good clone than a bad original... imo, it was a mediocre movie. There are much worse movies (and much worse Alien movies, like that one with Winona Ryder). Alien: Covenant had some dumb characters for sure. However, I disagree about Convenant having the dumbest characters, at least regarding the plot/story. imo, the dumbest and smartest characters from the entire series were in the Prometheus movie. Spoiler alert: Two dumbest characters: Weyland and Shaw. Weyland was business savvy and wealthy. Shaw was a booksmart scientist. Yet, these two characters did the dumbest/most dangerous thing in the entire series, which was to create, aid, and empower the AI David. Smartest characters: David and the Engineer. David for obvious reasons (i.e. he's an evil genius). Uses his advanced AI intelligence to wipe out the Engineer's population on their home planet and might do the same to humans. Within moments after being woken, the Engineer recognized what David truly was and the kind of threat he posed, so he ripped his head off. He knew that humanity (the offshoot of whatever his species is called) had to be destroyed before spreading the most monstrous creation of all - AI.

Yeah I didn't care much for Alien Covenant either. Michael Fassbender was great as David/Walter though.

Kong: Skull Island 3D (Download): A lot of fun, reminds me of those adventure/fantasy movies I liked as a kid (Sinbad, Krull, stuff like that) only made with today's technology and FX. All kinds of weird and wonderful creatures that steal the show. Can't wait for more...

I just got back from seeing Spider-Man: Homecoming. Good movie and there's a scene during the credits that's good but don't bother staying for the after credits scene. I was expecting some kind of tease for Infinity War, but it's basically {CLICK FOR SPOILER} just Captain America saying, "Haha, made you stay for the entire credits." These Marvel movies always have after credits scenes that are worth sticking around for, this time they just trolled the audience. It was still pretty funny though, also an inside joke from the movie itself. *edit* Went to see War for the Planet of the Apes today. Also a good movie, hard to say which is better since they're very different kinds of movies. Spider-Man Homecoming is very vibrant with plenty of action like you'd expect of a Marvel superhero movie, with great characters. Michael Keaton as the villain is also great. Planet of the Apes also has great characters but it's definitely a darker movie that's more dramatic and tense. They've also come really far with the CGI apes, they look very real and that makes it even easier to feel for them as characters on the screen. There were a lot more people in the theater for Planet of the Apes compared to the audience for Spider-Man, which I heard has had a 73% drop in ticket sales since it released.

The Watch (Bluray): Stoner comedy with some alien-splatter action, what's not to enjoy?
Revolt (Download): Lower budget alien invasion movie set in Africa and thus reminscent of the Dead and District 9 and not unlike Monsters either. It was OK, but the alien drones were kinda silly.
Holidays (Bluray): Horror anthology that was finally cheap enough to buy. Seen it a few times now, never gets old.

The Girl on the Train (TV): Thought the wife might like it, seeing how it's based on one of those chicks-bestsellers. Afterwards she said it was exactly like some of those books she reads (chicks thrillers). Me, I thought it was pretty weaksauce upon rewatch, deffo not going to buy it now...
The Darkness (TV): Caught my eye because it was by Greg McLean of Wolf Creek, Rogue and recently The Belko Experiment fame. Also had Radha Mitchell in it, which is a nice bonus. Well, that was pretty disappointing. Haunted house movie knock-off that was never scary or mysterious and dragged itself to a weaksauce finale. Avoid.

Doghouse (Bluray): Fun little British splatter horror I picked up cheap second hand. Already had it on DVD but probably would never have gotten around to watching that again.

Phoenix Forgotten (Download): Aptly named because I won't remember it within a week. By the numbers found footage movie that starts interesting but suffers from extreme predictability and fails to deliver when it counts, ie: extremely weak finale which is just noise and extreme shakycam, confirming (badly and blurry) what you already knew 5 minutes into the movie...

Oats Studio Volume 1 mini-marathon
Rakka (Download): Still great, seen it a couple of times now. Aliens look cool, good CG... Firebase (Download): I already thought Rakka was great, this was fucking amazing! OMG, I loved it, so gory and weird. Right up my alley! Zygote (Download): Still good but the weakest of the bunch so far. More of a straightforward Alien clone but still, gotta love the creature they conjured up.
Castlevania Epi 1-4 (Download): Netflix series inspired by, well, Castlevania obviously. 4 20-minute episodes of which the first and the last are the best by far and they're not even that good. The 2 in the middle are extremely talky and quite boring. I have to admit I liked the animation style and designs. They're more akin to anime than traditional American animation, which I appreciate, in fact, they reminded me a lot of the classic Yoshiaki Kawajiri designs. I guess the point is to make more because it doesn't really have an ending.

I watched Castlevania as well and generally agree. Although I think the character design/animations were weak. The background and "set design" were top notch though. Almost quit watching after first 10 minutes. Overall it didn't leave me astounded or anything, but I'm glad I finished it and will probably watch new seasons.

Batman: The Killing Joke (TV): Took me 3 tries to get through it. Cartoony animation style didn't fit the serious tone of the story at all. I feel this could've been a good story if it was handled completely differently, especially the way it looked, with a lot more internal dialogue from Batman. I'm guessing the comic it's based on is much better.
The Red Turtle (TV): Animated movie without a single line of dialogue. Guy shipwrecks on deserted island, all his rafts get destroyed by big red turtle, guy tries to kill turtle but regrets it and tries to save his life, turtle turns into woman, they have son who grows up and swims away from island, guy gets old and dies, woman turns back into turtle and swims away... There, just saved you 80 or so minutes. Guessing it's all a metaphor for life, but yeah, I don't care...
High-Rise (TV): Speaking of metaphors, holy shit, they sure hammered it in with this flick. Liked a couple of Ben Wheatley movies but this one ain't one of them. Little too on the nose with the metaphors, not enough fun or sense...
Adventureland (TV): Actually downloaded it a while ago but never got around to watching it. Figured the wife might enjoy it more than me by my lonesome would. I'd seen it before and remembered liking it but it turned out to be a lot more romcom than I remembered. Won't go for a 3rd watch...

You ever watch Batman the animated series? Same cast and everyone that did The Killing Joke. Love Mark Hamill as Joker. Was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid, was certainly more adult than most everything else I was watching at the time.

Shaun of the Dead (Bluray): With the kids. They didn't get it, initially (they don't have the zombie baggage we do) and it took too long for zombies to show up. Ultimately they started getting into it but it took a while. I was planning on showing them Hot Fuzz as well...

Spiderman: Homecoming (Theatre): Fun movie though not as good as the first two Raimi movies imho. Back then those were perfect (coming from someone who had been reading Spidey comics for a few years in college when those movies came out). This new Spidey is fun and the movie was fun but apart from the character names and Spidey himself, I recognised very little from before. All those changes in characters (maybe that's the case in the current comics, I don't know) just for diversity's sake is a bit annoying. The Raimi movies were spot on with all that stuff and they had great characterisation all around, this one if far removed from that universe. But like I said, very enjoyable nonetheless. Shame they didn't go for the new suit design at the end though, that looked dope...

Capricorn One (Download): Wanted to (re-) watch this ever since I saw that OJ Simpson documentary. Just happened to show up at the main page of the place I get movies from because I wasn't looking for it but felt like too good of an opportunity to pass up. Solid flick, should really see if I can find it on Bluray...

We didn't end up watching it, I went to the theatre instead. Maybe tonight.
Valerian 3D (Theatre): Looked amazing with some cool creature designs but I can't help but feel it lacked severely in both the plot as well as the character department. The titular character isn't very interesting or charismatic and there isn't a single memorable character in the entire flick. I didn't hate it, there's good stuff in there, but even though it has a colourful universe akin to Guardians of the Galaxy, the characterisation and fun is nowhere near that level...

Turbo Kid (Bluray): Extreme gory '80s nostalgia fun you have to watch if you haven't already...
The Lego Batman Movie 3D (Download): Good fun, maybe not as imaginative as the original Lego movie but there were a lot of laughs to be had and it was fun to try and look for all the little things and references hidden away everywhere.

Platoon(Bluray): One of the best war movies and certainly the best about the Vietnam war.
Twin Peaks - Season 3 (Epi 1-7) (Download): To be honest, I was a bit reluctant to start watching it because like many I too feel the original series is only great until the reveal of who killed Laura Palmer halfway the second series and it just becomes too weird after that. And that is where this picks up 25 years later... ...but for some reason I love the weirdness now (and weird it is). I binged 5 of these 7 episodes at a time it's difficult for me to stay awake, but the constant weirdness (and let's not forget humor) kept me interested and awake. Rest tonight (and then week by week, I guess, didn't realise this run wasn't complete yet before I started watching).

I had never seen Twin Peaks till about 2011ish when I first got Netflix, for some reason we never watched it when I was a kid. I was looking forward to it because of David Lynch and its reputation. I found it more cheesy-weird then creepy-weird. I never got around to finishing it. For sure going to try this 3rd season. Will have to wiki the story of the first 2 seasons to catch up.

Twin Peaks - Season 3 (Epi 8-11) (Download): Holy crap, episode 8 is about the craziest, weirdest thing you'll ever see on TV. It's borderline experimental but strangely fascinating. First 10 minutes is just about "normal" (for Twin Peaks), then NiN does a song for some 5 minutes but the rest of the episode is just mindbending. Rest of the episodes is more of the usual stuff, but that 8th is the highlight of the season so far...
Contemplating waiting for the series to finish now before I start watching the rest. It's a good series to binge because there's a lot of characters and other stuff to remember and at 1 episode every week it might take away some of the atmosphere and dilute the experience...

Dead Space: Aftermath (3D) ((3D) Bluray): Was very cheap and apparently in 3D but I ended up watching only the first part in 3D. Once the hand drawn segments started, 3D seemed to be mostly optional, but the wrap-around, in cell-shaded CG, did work pretty well.
Cop Car (Download): Wanted to see the movie that gave the director the Spidey Homecoming job. Was kinda neat actually, very select few locations, very little exposition to who, what or why but enough to get the job done...

American Gods - Season 1 (Download): Interesting, especially visually. Lots of neat shots and weird images. Plot is strange but weirdly compelling. There were only 8 episodes, which is manageable, but clearly the story is only beginning and more needs to follow. Maybe not good enough to buy, though if I find it cheap it may be hard to pass up, but I'm certainly on board to watch more of it.
Rupture (TV): Probably the worst movie I've seen this year. They had Noomie Rapace, Peter Stormare and Michael Chiklis so they at least had some money to start with but I guess there wasn't much left once those people got paid. Everything takes place in purple lit corridors and rooms in some warehouse and the story is too ridiculous to try and explain. Started dumb and kept getting dumber. Avoid.
Dead Space: Downfall (Download): Since I saw the sequel, I figured I'd give the original another shot as well. Blurays were too expensive but I found a nice high bitrate HD rip that did the trick just fine...

Blood Father (TV): Mel Gibson's return to the movies. When this first started appearing in the shops, judging by the title and cover (and the return of Gibson), I figured it would be a low-budget B-movie type deal, dumb plot and amateurishly shot, but when I zapped onto it a while back, right into a scene with Michael Parks, I had to adjust that image. Decided to record it and give it an honest chance. Wasn't bad, definately a lot better than I gave it credit for.
