The Day After Tomorrow (TV): Have it on Bluray but recorded if off the TV for the kids because of the subtitles. They seemed to enjoy it. Emmerich has a way to keep things interesting and flowing in these types of ensemble disaster movies...
Don't Breathe (Bluray): One of the better horror flicks of late.
Star Trek - Beyond 3D (3D Bluray): Fun while it lasts. Looks pretty decent in 3D as well.
Raw (Download): Meh. Vegetarian chick gets taste for human flesh while in university. Probably some sort of allegory for growing up and shit but I though it was all a bit stupid. Movie never grabbed me and wasn't insane enough to satisfy me on a purely visceral level either. People fainted when this was shown? Probably not seen a lot of horror before...
New Kids Nitro (Bluray): Sequel to Turbo and like most sequel: more of the same just not as good. Zombie subplot really shows the lack of ideas...

The Thing (Bluray): Decided to watch the story in order so I started off by watching the 2011 pre-make, which isn't a bad movie by itself just has the problem of having to live up to the Carpenter one and then it falls short in just about every way, most importantly the CGI gore, which just doesn't work as well as practical. It's too clean, too fabricated and too fast. As grotesque as they tried to make the monster by the end, it just doesn't work (and doesn't seem very practical operating a spaceship either). In fact that entire spaceship finale feels out of place. I do like the actual anding though, which takes us seamlessly into the old movie...
The Thing (Bluray): And this is where it's at: better characters, better gore and just better overall. A true classic.
The Void (Bluray): What better movie to follow up the Thing with? A Thing/Hellraiser 2/From Beyond fanfilm basically, but good in its own right and, importantly, keeps the gore practical, which is always nice to see.
Colossal (Download): Nacho Vigalondo's latest. Loved Timecrimes and loved his bit in VHS: Viral but wasn't a big fan of Open Windows, so I started watching this with some reservations. But I liked it. It's unlike anything else I've seen and I won't spoil anything by talking about the plot, I'll just say it's not horror but more of a drama with science fiction elements...

I bought the German Society bluray last year after downloading the movie and loving how fucked up it was.
Werckmeister Harmonies (Download): The most boring movie you'll (n)ever see.
Blood Punch (Bluray): Groundhog Day + violence = Blood Punch. I liked these types of time manipulation movies.
Beyond the Black Rainbow (Download): Yeah, I don't have a fucking clue. Wanted to watch this after someone made a music video out of it for a song I really liked (check the youtube thread) but I have no fucking idea what I watched.
The VVitch (Bluray): Great. Never imagined I'd like this but it really is very good.
Bros Before Hos (Bluray): Dutch comedy that had me ROFLing a few times. It's basically a romantic comedy but made more for guys than for girls so it's pretty gross and sexist, which is fine by me...

The VVitch (Bluray): Great. Never imagined I'd like this but it really is very good. Heh, a guy from work whose opinion on movies I rate recommended it to me - I never got around to getting it but my old man has an interest in history/Olde English Magick so I mentioned it to him & after watching the trailer he bought the BR from Amazon... Ended up saying it was the worst film he'd seen in a good while haha! Gave me the disc but still aint put it on yet.

In an attempt to wash away the foul Covenant taste, I decided to do an Alien double. First the original, then a current clone (which I skipped in the theatre in favor of Covenant)...
Alien (Bluray): Not even the director's cut, the way better straight up 1979 original. Someone should sit Ridley Scott down and make him rewatch this and then rewatch Covenant and have him explain what he thinks is wrong with the original that he has to try and correct it with the new one. I think he'll be in tears by the end: "What have I done? I've become George Lucas"...
Life (Download): Modern Alien-clone, like a kind of Gravity/Alien hybrid. Creature trying to kill the crew, but in weightless space. I liked it. There was some tension and they at least tried to be smart about their actions. The only downside is they weren't up against the coolest filmmonster ever but rather some CGI space squid. Other than that (and the predictable 'twist' at the end), it was pretty good. I wonder if there's a 3D version of it because some scenes it looked like it was made exactly for that, though that could just be Gravity flashbacks...
Popoz (Bluray): Final movie in the Dutch comedy boxset and by far the weakest of the bunch. Feels like some kids' TV-show version of a buddy cop movie with way over-the-top acting and general farfetched silliness. But too violent to be suited for that so it falls flat on both fronts. They should've watched Hot Fuzz more closely to see how it's done properly...

The Iceman (TV/Download): Wanted to see it but forgot to set the recorder. Turned out to be a bit meh. Liked Shannon's performance well enough but it's one of those biopics that tries to show too much in too little time. A lot of time passes, decades, but it never feels like that in the movie so I can't shake the feeling it's just a bunch of random scenes...
A Cure for Wellness (Download): Meh. Looked expensive and I liked the first half well enough but once I started to figure the mystery out, I started losing interest quickly. I realised from the start the eventual twist would never live up to the expectations and I've seen too many movies to not figure most of it out beforehand.
Started watching another movie, Free Fire, but Cure for Wellness put me to sleep too much to make it through that one so I shut it off halfway though. Bunch of people shouting and shooting, but it's Ben Wheatley so I'll give it another go someday...

Re-Cycle (Bluray): Pang bros 'classic' which I have on DVD in one of those ridiculously big Region 3 limited editions. Still had to have it when I saw it cheap-ish on bluray, just to see if it held up. It did, even the CGI, in a very, very acceptable HD transfer which actually surprised me. Another thing that surprised me and which could've really fucked up the experience: the cover said language: Mandarin, while I know it's in Cantonese. I didn't see this when I bought it and it really annoyed me, but luckily someone at the bluray company fucked up as well and the movie itself actually is in Cantonese and it's just the cover that's wrong...
Gods of Egypt 3D (3D Bluray): Grade-A schlock that's all over the place tonally but if you know what you're in for, there's some fun to be had, especially in 3D. Didn't like it so much when I first saw it but now I can see the campy fun in it. Still, Alex Proyas, what happened?
The Loved Ones (Bluray): This is how you do low-budget horror. Recommended...
Peelers (Download): This isn't how you do low budget horror. Avoid...

Three Girls (BBC iPlayer): If you wanna see something really fucked up this is the true story of the 1,400 girls who were pimped out in England. The police knew but they didn't do anything about it for years because the perps were Muslim and they did not want to be accused of being racist by arresting them. Can't make this shit up. Really messed up show so far. Can watch it here as long as you are savvy enough to get around the BBC ip filter for the UK: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08r8pvh/three-girls-series-1-episode-1

Pontypool (Bluray): Holds up really well, especially the first half is still creepy as all hell with all the implied violence and horror which you only hear through telephone calls.
The Lure (Download): How to describe this? Erotic Polish horror musical about 2 mermaids that end up in a nightclub. They have no pussies or assholes but when you get them wet (phrasing, boom) they get a huge fish tail. They also enjoy eating people's hearts and singing and if they should fall in love with a human and he marries someone else, they'll turn into sea foam... Yeah, I watched it and I still don't know WTF...
The Lost Arcade (Download): Documentary love letter to a NY arcade and the people that used to hang out there. Very moving story about people of various backgrounds coming together over a shared interest and a tic-tac-toe playing chicken...

I bought Logan on blu-ray, wanted to get for my collection while it's still available with the "Noir" edition of the movie (black and white).
I watched the Noir version, thought the monochromatic treatment added more of that old western feel they were going for in the first place. If I do watch it again later on, I'll probably be more inclined to watch it in B&W.

Dune (Extended Bluray): I wasn't out looking for it or had any interest in it but since the German bluray of Dune I bought came with both the theatrical and the longer TV-cut, I decided to check it out at least once... ...and we're off to a promising start as one of the first credits is 'Alan Smithee' as the director, so David Lynch already didn't want to put his name on this. Most notable change is the opening of the movie. Instead of the Emperor's daughter giving you a quick rundown of what's what in the world of Dune, there's an almost 10 minutes long voice over explaining everything over some shots of concept art. It was actually somewhat interesting to learn some of that stuff, but I wouldn't say it was required. Later in the movie that same voice over explains some more stuff here and there, sometimes stopping the movie dead in its tracks to do so. Most of the added or extended scenes I can see why they were cut, most of them are verbal exposition that was otherwise visually implied anyway. There was also a lot of re-using of footage to extend scenes (sometimes with the voice-over). Interesting to see once, but I'll stick to the theatrical from now on.
Splinter (Bluray): Neat little creature feature that I was lucky enough to find cheap on the German Amazon. Glad I got to see it again because it's better than most. Already Had it on DVD, but you know...

The Blackcoat's Daughter (Download): Came recommended from the guys at Redlettermedia and they were right. Very reminiscent of the VVitch but in modern times, so a slow building atmosperic horror devoid of jump scares.
Girls Against Boys (Bluray): Bought this because it was only €2.5 and came in a nice steelbook. Didn't know anything about the movie beforehand. Turned out it was a bit like Baise Moi without the porn, 2 girls getting back at men (ie. pigs). So yeah, a bit of a feminist pamphlet but it was alright. Certainly don't regret watching or buying it.
Once upon a Time in Mexico (Bluray): The digital nature of the film really stood out in HD. Can't remember it being this obvious on DVD. You get used to the look eventually but it's really jarring at first. Digital filming has come a long way since this movie was made...
Rakka (Youtube): First of the short-movies released by Neill Blomkamp's Oats Studios, free on Steam and Youtube. It's about an alien invasion that's been going on for a long time and the humans finally trying to fight back. Stars Sigourney Weaver and some very impressive CG...
Outcast - Season 2 (Download): Last week was the finale and even if there's a 3rd season, I don't know if I'll be back for that. This was already a chore to get through, even at an episode a week. First season's pilot was great but the series quickly ran out of steam and the second season never managed to grab my attention...

Wonder Woman (Theatre): Not bad, solid adventure movie/superhero origin story. Not much to dislike, not much to comment on. Was all just 'good', like I said, solid movie. Fuck all that feminist praise though, seems like they tried hijacking this movie like they did the Ghostbusters one with the exception this actually is a good movie so they don't have enough fuel to hate on men disliking it 'because it's about women!!!!111'

I don't care that the characters female - for me when it comes to comics Gods & Magic can fuck off for the most part. Thor's a good example, shit/boring comics (albeit sometimes visually interesting) and I'll probably never watch one of those films - am I Scandiphobic? Norse lives matter too right.
Against my better judgement I bought 'Justice League: Dark' the other day - I'm a sucker for Batman - I don't even really remember what happened in it, probably the least interesting/memorable release I've seen that DC have put out to date.
At least there were two episodes of the fucking excellent 'The Brave and the Bold' as bonus features.

Batman v Superman 3D (3D Bluray): Sure it has its faults but to be honest, I just enjoy it for what it is, which, especially in 3D, is a heck of a ride. 3D version isn't the extended version but I'm hard pressed to remember anything that was added in that version anyway.
The Devil's Candy (Bluray): Check it out if you like indie horror. Not your typical possession flick...

Gettysburg (DVD): Some 4 hours long, watched it in 2 parts (one side of the disc a night) but especially the first half flies by. I guess it's accurate, I have no idea, but this kind of warfare is just insane to me. Let's all walk slowly towards a line of people all pointing guns at us. Not that modern warfare isn't insane, but it at least makes some kind of sense. Looked like the tactics were still trying to catch up with the advances in weaponry.
Black Sheep (Bluray): Great little creature feature with great Weta workshop practical creatures (ie zombie sheep)
Resident Evil: Vendetta (Download): Latest CGI Resident Evil flick. Not a total loss thanks to a crazy and over-the-top finale but everything up to that point was mostly boring and quite stupid, especially the bad guy's motivation. I guess the games are equally stupid, what I've seen of them, but still, makes the plots of the live action movies seem like masterpieces...
Blame! (Download): Except for the fact it wasn't the original Japanese version, this anime, produced by Netflix, was greatness and certainly washed away the disappointment of that Resident Evil movie. Plotwise it's basically the Matrix, but there's some mystery, interesting visuals and good action. I liked it a lot. Now if only I could get a Japanese version (although I liked 1 of the voices, pretty sure the old guy is Michael Ironside, but couldn't confirm because the English cast wasn't in the credits)...

Hell or High Water (Bluray): Amazing flick. I still remember seeing Ben Foster for the first time in a movie (Hostage FYI) and thinking he was great, like a young Brad Dourif. Nice to know I was right about his greatness.
The Signal (Bluray): It's a pretty decent movie but I don't think I've ever managed to watch it without falling asleep at one time or another. So strange. It's not slow or boring at all, heh, must be the music, I guess...
Clerks (Bluray): Still a great movie but the most pointless HD release ever, lol. Rewatched because the actress that played Caitlin, the girl that fucked the dead guy, died the other day and Kevin Smith talked about her on Hollywood Babble-On.

Sorry bout the late reply, was on vacation all week, but yeah, she apparently had crappy health for a long time until she finally lost the battle.
Here's all I managed to see all last week (had lined up a bunch on USB sticks but the TVs there were too crappy to be able to play anything so I was stuck with DVD and a few .avi files I brought):
Spaceballs (DVD): Dink dink dinkdinkdink...
Night of the Comet (Download): Couldn't be more '80s if they tried...

The Last Man on Earth - Season 1 (TV): Well, you know, ultimately it's pretty meh. Liked the first few episodes but when too many people showed up it turned into a standard sitcom and not a great one. Phil is a hard guy to like, most of the characters are as a matter of fact and while it's amusing at times it's also pretty predictable. Don't know if I'll be back for the next season. I'll record it but the first episode will have to be really good if more are going to follow...

Enemy (Bluray): Watched it with the wife, she hated the ending of course, which means she hated the movie. She can't enjoy a movie unless it's ridiculously overexplained with the most simplistic of endings. I knew it but I made her watch it anyway. I'm sure afterwards she watched a couple of romantic comedies to wash this movie away, ROFL, she watches (and enjoys!) the worst movies possible, I you go through our DVR, it always give you a genre underneath the title, hers are all the ones that have 'romantic' in the description, it's disgusting.

After Earth (Bluray): With the kid, just one though, the one that isn't as easily bored because I don't think the other one would have the patience for this somewhat slower movie, which I still don't understand why it's hated so much. Is it just because everyone hates Will Smith's kids?
The Belko Experiment (Download): Fun little Battle Royale type horror flick about a group of people getting trapped in a building and given the task to kill one another. Written by James Gunn and directed by Greg McLean, so it ain't shitty...
