Bad Boys 2 (Bluray): Almost forgot I watched this with the kids the other day, but first I put on the Robot Chicken Bayplosions clip to put things in perspective so every time something blew up we could say "Mi-Bay-BA-BA-BOOM" and "Splosiooon". They seemed to like the movie well enough. Not a single peep out of them despite it being well over 2 hours. I don't think it's great, but it sure is entertaining throughout in all its over-the-top-ness.
Bad Boys for Life (Download): Directed by a couple of Belgian, so I was almost obliged to watch it... Sadly I didn't like it all that much. Pretty bland stuff, not enough genuinly funny moments. Many attempts but most fell kinda flat. Action was OK, for the early 2000s. Since then we've had stuff like the Raid and John Wick, which again makes this seem rather bland. I didn't particulary like the story either, but I could've forgiven all that if the funny was there, sadly it wasn't. I am glad the movie did well so the 2 boys can get some more work in the US. They're nice guys that love these kinds of movies, too bad they didn't get a very good script to work with...
Wizard Mode (Download): Documentary about an autistic Canadian dude being great at pinball. I liked the parts of the doc that dealt with pinball, but the middle part was all about the autism, which dragged a bit. Looked like a sympathetic dude, with a couple of great parents.

Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler (Download): Documentary about the guy to be the first to score 1 billion points in a game, the game being Nibbler (aka snake, same game), which takes 2 days of continuous gameplay to achieve. Reminiscent of King of Kong, even features that (since then disgraced) Billy Mitchell guy, but without a clear antagonist like that Billy Mitchell. The competitors are all reasonable people, which is a shame, lol, because that's what made King of Kong stand out so much. Without that it's still a good story, but not great...

Future Man - Season 3 (Download): Unlike season 2, this one is all about time travel and as such is already better regardless, but it's just very good by itself. It goes deeper into the dynamics of time travel and has fun with the concept of a place outside of time. It was very Futurama in that regard, just with more dick jokes. Satisfying end to the series.
Jay and Silent Bob: Reboot (Bluray): Pre-ordered, bought, watched, loved. Not everything works but it's the funniest thing Smith has done in a while. I get all the in-jokes because I'm very much in...

The Report (Download): Movie about the investigation into the torturing of prisoners after 9/11. Lots of info, very thourough but also kind of dry. I've grown fond of these types of movies, but this wasn't the best one. That isn't to say it was bad in any way, just pretty dry.

Horror Movie - A Low-Budget Nightmare (Download): Basically a making of for the Australian movie 'Red Christmas' and it's pretty fun. Dude finally wants to that make that horror movie he always wanted to make, but it isn't going great. He's such a nice dude too, and he's assembled quite a list of characters around him. I hadn't seen the movie they're making yet, but I will.
Seven (Bluray): Showed the kids one of the best movies ever made. It visibly took them a while to get into it but eventually they seemed to be on board. Such a classic.
Westworld - Season 1 (Bluray): Rewatch of the entire series so far before jumping into the latest season. I've seen the first a few times now, but the second, even though having it on bluray, I don't think I've seen beyond the first airing.

Raising Matty Christian (Download): Documentary about a guy that was born without limbs but that didn't seem to stop him, until he accidentally overdosed on prescription drugs and alcohol. If only one of the several hot girls that called him their friend actually fucked him, he might still be with us, I think...

Westworld - Season 2 (Bluray): More of the same, with some of the best episodes of the series (so far) but also some of the weakest.
Mezzo Forte (Download): 1080p upgrades for the 480p (VHS?) rips I already had of this (hentai) anime. They do look a bit artificially enhanced but they're a clear improvement over the old versions.

Butt Boy (Download): Stop the press, we have the strangest movie of 2020 so far and it's called Butt Boy. It's not completely unlike that movie "Swallow", except the items aren't going in the mouth. But that's not the strangest thing, it really goes completely crazy, which I won't spoil here. I can just say I had the biggest grin on my face the whole way through and then the ending made me burst out laughing. Experience it for yourself, please.
Mortal Kombat Legends - Scorpion's Revenge (Download): Animated Mortal Kombat movie that starts off amazing with an unmasked Scorpion fighting off waves of Lin Kuei ninjas in the bloodiest way possible. This part actually reminded me of Ninja Scroll, which is high praise. Then we meet the rest of the cast and almost the exact same story as the Mortal Kombat live-action movie is played out in animation. It had its moments but to be honest, anything not involving Scorpion seemed to be lacking something. Almost felt like this was a Scorpion short at first and then it was padded out to be a full feature with the rest of the usual MK suspects. I'll never be a huge fan of the designs of American animation and remain a manga fanboi, but like I said, the opening (and the finale) of this movie were pretty great. Shame they couldn't maintain the same level throughout the entire thing.
Deadwax (Download): 8-episode horror series with episodes ranging from 10 to 17 minutes, totalling just over 2 hours, about a record that kills the listener or drives him insane... ...sound familiar? It should, it's the exact same premisse as John Carpenter's Masters of Horror entry Cigarette Burns, except with a movie. Still, the first episode was a-m-a-z-i-n-g and a great start but sadly it ran out of steam quite quickly. Episode 4 was another great one but the rest were quite exposition-y, often with 2 characters just sitting and talking. Finale redeemed it a bit but I can't help but feel this would've been better off as an 80-minute feature and have cut some of the slower parts.
Red Christmas (Download): The movie they were making in that documentary I watched the other day "Horror Movie: A Low-Budget Nightmare" and I can safely say: stick to the documentary, this sadly was not a very good movie...

Dogma (DVD/Download): Probably the most cinematic Kevin Smith movie and one of his best ones. It still has Jay and Bob silliness but it also has really clever jokes and of course a star cast. When Kevin Smith came to my college to promote this a little old Catholic lady went to the mic and said she was a lifelong devout Catholic but appreciated the message of the movie. He was like "even the shit monster?" lol. Also he was like "That is really cool the movie wasn't made for you but connected with you"

Police Squad - Entire Series (DVD/Download): Can't pass up a HD version of this crazy show up. Classic Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker 6-episode absurd cop show that eventually led to the Naked Gun movies, but in my opinion is better than the movies. All the visual gags and wordplay from their later work is already in it. They literally don't make'em like this anymore...

Beastie Boys Story (Download): Documentary that I liked a lot being a long-time fan of the Beastie Boys. 'Licensed to Ill' was the first album I ever bought (on cassette!) and 'Paul's Boutique' is my second favorite album of all time (after 'FLAvour of the Weak' by Front Line Assembly). Listening to the (remaining) guys and seeing all the archive footage often choked me up a little.
The Man from Nowhere (Bluray): I remembered liking this movie even though I didn't particulary remember any details about it but it took a while before it got to the good parts. It starts off somewhat confusing but once all the players are in place it's more straightforward and enjoyable. To be honest though, if I'd rewatched it (I have it on DVD) before I bought it, I probably wouldn't have bothered anymore. Didn't hold up as well as I thought it might.
Village of the Damned (Bluray): Another DVD upgrade. While it may not be the best movie ever, or far from the best Carpenter flick, I still always enjoy it when I watch it. It's got a certain creepy atmosphere. One new thing I learned rewatching this: the smallest of the kids, the one without a companion, is played by Thomas Dekker. He's pretty good too, easily the most convincing of the kids...
Spawn (Download/DVD): Ignore the CG, watch it for the practical FX and of course John Leguizamo's performance as Clown. It's a very hit'n'miss movie but nostalgia plays a big part in me still liking it.
One-Eyed Monster (Download/DVD): Fun low-budget horror comedy about Ron Jeremy's dick coming to life and killing the people recording a porn flick in a cabin in the woods. It's as silly as it sounds but the jokes actually work and an old Charles Napier shows up to steal the show with a Vietnam story.

The Matrix (Bluray): Time to show the kids another classic. 20 years old by now but still all kinds of awesome.
Extraction (Download): The Russo's latest movie starring Thor himself. There's an amazingly shot action/chase scene in the first half of the movie that sadly never gets topped again. It was a decent movie, too bad none of the characters were all that likeable. I'd recommend it for the action and the filmmaking alone, that's all top notch. Impressive body count. Not that great a story.
Gretel & Hansel (Download): The newest by Oz Perkins of 'Blackcoat's Daughter' fame (and being the son of, obviously). Another interesting little horror flick that's only let down by being the Hansel and Gretel story. Visually really impressive with a bunch of nightmarish scenes, great music, creepy atmosphere throughout. A couple of weird lines of dialogue that seemed out of place for the characters to say, but overall I really liked it. Recommended if you like your horror slow and atmospheric. Not unlike the VVitch...
Titan AE (Download/DVD): While the movie holds up overall, the visuals didn't age as gracefully. All the 2D animation looks fine, though still not as sharp as it could be, but it's clear the 3D elements weren't rendered in a resolution that's high enough to stand up to 1080p scrutineering, making them stand out more than they should.

I bought that when it came out back in the day. Was right up my alley in that time of my life. Techno bands and metal bands crossing over. At school in the early '90s the soundtrack for another movie was a big hit as well: "Judgment Night". Hiphop and metal crossing over. It got played all the time during bus rides. I bet that pissed some people off, lol...
The Clone Wars (Download/DVD): I bit the bullet. With the new season being released episodically on Disney+ week after week, I decided to finally catch up on all the Clone Wars seasons I have laying around on DVD. I've seen the first and second a few times over the years but then it starts getting very hazy. The kid watched them, so I kept buying them but I'm not sure where I eventually ended up. I think I never watched the 6th season, but maybe I didn't even get to 5. Now I feel I can't really start watching the new episodes until I'm caught up completely. I pondered just skipping ahead to season 3, but then it has been years since I saw any of it so I finally decided to just start from scratch and start at the very beginning and work my way through to the end. I hope I make it this time because those seasons are loooong (20+ episodes) and not always that great, though I remember them getting better and better as the seasons went on. Anyway, I'm decided, I'm going to do it. First hurdle is out of the way, the movie, downloaded a HD version but probably shouldn't have bothered. I watched the first episode of season 1 right afterwards (on DVD) and barely could tell the difference. The models and texturing aren't the most detailed ever. The DVD will do just fine...

Blood Quantum (Download): Surprisingly decent Canadian zombie movie about an outbreak in a remote area with a lot of natives that happen to be immune. First part of the movie, that deals with the outbreak itself, is the best and has some originality to it. After the '6 months later' jump it becomes more generic but it certainly still isn't any worse than whatever the Walking Dead has been throwing at the world the past 6 or so seasons...
Summer Days with Coo (Download): Very long (2h20m) anime about a kid finding a fossilised Kappa (a water spirit) that comes back to life. First thing I noticed was the animation, it wasn't that great for an anime, but I decided to stick with it regardless. It becomes less apparent as you're slowly won over by the endearing story. I probably won't watch it again, but it certainly became more interesting as it went on, just too bad about the somewhat mediocre animation.
Extra Ordinary (Download): Funny Irish horror comedy that also stars Will Forte as an obnoxious American one-hit wonder that tries to strike a deal with a demon to restore him to his former glory and the attempts of a female driving instructor with paranormal abilities to stop him...
With Westworld S3 slowly coming to an end, I started watching that as well in the hopes of rounding the entire series off at the end of the weekend...

Three Days of Terror - The Charlie Hebdo Attacks (Download): 1 hour HBO documentary with a bunch of footage from the actual attacks. Overshadowed a bit by the raid in Paris not long afterwards, but still compelling stuff. Even one of the kids turned off his game to start watching.
Yakuza Apocalypse (Bluray): I didn't get this movie the first time I saw it, expecting a straight-up serious Yakuza movie, now I knew it was just complete madness with vampires, a guy in a frog suit, a disgusting looking kappa spirit and many other silly characters battling it out and I enjoyed it...
Tusk (Bluray): Finally on bluray. This never came out here and even on UK-sites I only ever found a DVD. Now with the launch of a Dutch version of Amazon, could I get a French version (for a reasonable price). Seems like this Dutch Amazon just collects stuff from all over Europe. With the order I placed, I bought 7 blurays: 2 German editions, 2 French releases and 3 UK ones. All for prices lower than they were on their respective localised Amazon sites and all from Amazon itself, no 3rd party sellers. Cool. Anyway, Tusk, 75% a great movie, 25% not as much. The Guy Lapointe flashback especially should never have made it in. In fact, everything with that character is so tonally different, it probably would've been a better movie without him, even though individual scenes with him are funny... Why Don't You Just Die (Download): Russian horror-comedy that almost entirely takes place in a single apartment. A girl convinces her boyfriend to kill her father, who's a cop. I won't spoil anything but things don't go as planned and it all escalates rather quickly from there. A bloody and funny romp.

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (Download): Compelling stuff. Thought I'd watch one episode and hopefully didn't think much of it so I could skip the rest but like usual I was hooked right away. So far this only seems to have worked with the Witcher, which I shut off after about 15 minutes. Anyway, Tiger King... Of all the despicable people in this documentary series, I disliked that woman the most. There's something off about her. Joe Exotic is weird, but at least he's genuine and honest about his weirdness, that woman is too smart to show her true self. Some goes for the self-proclaimed guru. He's smart. He seems like the nicest guy in the bunch but that's only because he's smart enough to only show that side... Yeah there are no "good guys" in the show I can see TBH. {CLICK FOR SPOILER}Also imagine being so into meth you would literally fuck that tiger king dude even tho you aren't even gay. Meth is awful shit. I just watched this recently, didn't realize how much there was to that whole thing, messed up stuff. I also didn't know that guy was a country singer.

Promare (Download): Insane, and I mean: INSANE anime movie directed by the guy that did Dead Leaves. If you've seen that movie, you might have an idea of where this is headed but all the rest: hold on to your hat because it's gonna fly off. In essence it's a mecha movie, but the way it's presented and animated is just beyond words. 'Blink and you'll miss it' is exactly what this movie is. It's about a group of firefighters that battle with people that can spontaneously combust called 'Burnish' that pretty much decimated the planet several years earlier. All the rest you have to see for yourself: here's a trailer:

Westworld - Season 3 (Download): Should've been called 'World'. I understand they couldn't stick to the park after the end of season 2 but that also left them without a clear goal. This season sees the introduction of a new villain but one I didn't care quite as much for. It's all becoming very esotheric and, frankly, not as interesting anymore. They do some good (and expensive looking) world building but the characters don't work quite as well outside of the park. I also felt it very hard to keep track of where anyone was at any time or just time in general. The characters seemingly were all over the globe all of the time and I had trouble judging just how much time passed from one scene to the next without the clear framework of a contained enviroment like the Westworld park. This all makes it seem more negative than I thought it was though.

Star Wars - The Clone Wars - Season 1 (DVD): I've decided to rewatch this entire series and that means I have to start with season 1, which, granted, isn't all that bad. It's the one I've seen the most and of the 20-something episodes only a few aren't all that interesting. Most are OK to pretty good, which, for a kid's show isn't a bad deal. I certainly gave up on the other CG Star Wars shows a lot sooner. After season 1 I'd seen enough of Rebels and Resistance I gave up halfway through. That was too kiddy and just not very interesting at all. I guess the main thing Clone Wars has going for it is the recognisable and established characters and not just some randoms you have no connection to...

Midsommar (Bluray): A bit of an impulse buy soon after I'd seen it the first time and while there's nothing wrong with the movie as it is, now I probably would've gone for the extended director's cut, which probably wasn't available yet or I just didn't know of. I'll pick it up one day, I guess, though not right now. It's a good movie, but it's not one you'd see every other week, certainly not with that runtime, and the DC is 30 minutes longer even.
Pulse (Kairo) (Bluray): One of the better J-horror movies. Arrow bluray is pretty decent though it's still limited to the source material, which isn't always as sharp as it could be.
The Signal (Bluray): The one with the signal that causes violence, not the one with the aliens, though, if you think about it, the source of the signal is never explained, so it could still be aliens. Anyway, black horror comedy I've seen plenty of times and will continue to do so...

The Matrix Revolutions (Bluray): It's incredible to think these special FX are already 17 years old. Most of it, especially the Hammer chase and the assault on the dock look flawless. If I'm honest, there's not much that has come out since then that can top those things in scope and spectacle...
Thirst (Bluray): Chan-wook Park's a-typical vampire movie. Uses some of the typical vampire lore but has fun with the rest of it and thus becomes highly original and unexpected.
Freaks (Bluray): Surprising twist on the typical 'people with powers' movies. Check it out for yourself.
The Murder Case of Hana and Alice (Download): Anime whose on-screen title is just 'The Case of Hana and Alice', I guess they threw murder in there to make it more appealing. It's strange. The animation at first seems pretty ugly, not very manga-like, but then I think I figured it out. The animation is very smooth and true to life, with all kinds of little gestures you don't normally get, especially in traditional anime, which tends to reserve movement to when it's best suited. I think this movie was rotoscoped, filmed first then drawn over. I came to this conclusion also because apparently this movie is a prequel to a live-action movie that was released 11 years prior and those actresses would be hard pressed to play high schoolers after all that time. Now they could play as they saw fit and then drawn younger. It makes sense. Anyway, it's a high school drama that starts off mysteriously with an apparent murder and paranormal stuff but turns to a tale of friendship between 2 girls in the second half. Completely not what I expected, not in the animation department, nor the story, but I can't say I found it hard to watch either. The characters were fun and funny.
