The Last Hangover (Download): 44 minutes Brazilian short that crosses (hoho!) the last supper with the Hangover movie. The apostles wake up after the last supper and wonder where Jesus has gone, which you then find out in flashbacks. Surprisingly hilarious. Recommended if you have an hour to spare...

Shakedown (PornHub lol): So I saw PornHub released their first movie and its a documentary. Free to watch only an hour long.
Supposedly the director filmed 400 hours of footage, I can't believe this is the movie she made with 400 hours of footage.
Basically its about a black lesbian strip club in the early 2000s. I admit I had no idea black lesbian strip clubs were a thing till this movie. Its super boring. A couple of interviews with way past their prime strippers and a bunch of shots of a cheap grimy club. Fin. No point to it at all.

Cargo (Bluray): The first ever Swiss scifi-feature (from 2009) still holds up today thanks to a director that obviously has a love for the genre and the patience to make sure the details are there. It's not the most action packed movie but the story in intriguing and the FX are remarkably well done...
This Boy Caught a Merman (Download): Dafuq did I just watch? I just went by the screenshots, which promised a colourful anime, which it was, but the story??? In this 30-something minute movie a dude gets saved by a merman that then moves in with him. The merman recognises the loneliness in the boy and gives him the confidence to start socialising, which in turns makes the merman lonely because he isn't mobile outside of the water and gets left home alone. When he ultimately returns to the water, the boy chases him and they finally confess their love for one another... I think I accidentally watched the gayest movie ever made... ...afterwards I found out on the imdb there's an entire series of 'this boy' movies and judging by the covers they're all about boys catching boys, lol...
Cube (Bluray): The classic, apparently taken from the same master as the DVD I have because the dialogue is still out of sync, lol. The picture quality was pretty good, almost too good, making all the details in the low-budget sets stand out a little too much at times. A lot of stuff I never noticed before in non-HD versions of this movie, which I've seen plenty of times already...
Apocalypse Runner (Download): Another strange short. 40 minutes. Korean this time and live action about a post-apocalyptic world in which movies are banned and a movie critic with nothing left to critique starts interpreting reality as a movie to keep his sanity. There is a point to it all but it's packaged in a pretty pretentious box that has trouble remaining interesting for its short running time...

Cube 2: Hypercube (Download/DVD): Always liked this Cube sequel. I seem to be in the minority in this but I just think it's neat with all the quantum nonsense. It also holds up better in HD, except for some of the low-budget CG, but then that already looked iffy back in the day in SD...
Borderland (Download/DVD): Oh, I made a mistake watching this but I only discovered this over halfway through. I started watching it thinking it was a completely different movie, although I still remembered Sean Astin (the only good part of this movie), which is weird because he isn't in the movie I thought it was. It's a 'based on a real story' Hostel-clone that's far too dry and boring to keep its simple premisse interesting for 100 minutes. The last 20 minutes were a chore, but I'd watched too much already to stop there... Incidentally the movie I thought I was going to watch turned out to be 'Territories'. I had to scroll through my DVD-Profiler until I stumbled upon the cover, which I did remember. Should've done that earlier, could've saved me a bunch of time...
I also started watching season 2 of Altered Carbon, but 3 episodes in I can already tell you it's not nearly as enjoyable as the first season...

The Outsider - Season 1 finale premiered last night, overall a great show.
*edit* Also saw Jojo Rabbit recently, overall I thought it was great, especially Sam Rockwell as that captain guy. This kind of movie would've probably been much more controversial 20-25 years ago, but it still ends in a positive way.

I've been really enjoying anything that Jason Bateman has gotten involved in over the last several years. Ozarks is also phenomenal. I'm a big King fan and have read through all the Mr Mercedes novels...why they chose to do this one first was a bit odd to me as it's sort of a side-story. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the detective group series.
Jojo was great, it left me feeling odd. Humor mixed with horrific crimes against humanity caused a mix of feelings in me.

Yeah Stephen King stuff is usually great, also Jason Bateman was a producer of the show. Jojo Rabbit was funny for most of it, then suddenly it becomes serious.
Now watching 1917, I feel bad that I missed it at the theater but bought it on VUDU even though I've never seen it. Also bought Jojo Rabbit on VUDU, had a discount code for it.
1917 is great so far, very atmospheric. The story kind of reminds me of Saving Private Ryan too.

1917 (Download): A lot better and more exciting than I had expected. It's true it kind of feels like a videogame with the camera always following the characters around, especially in the first half when it's just the 2 of them alone, but at least it's a game with a good story...
Swallow (Download): One I had initially skipped but Kevin Smith describing it on the latest episode of Fatman Beyond made me go back. It's one of those quirky indie movies, initially amusing but slowly becoming darker and darker. It reminded me of things like Proxy and to a lesser extent Excision. It's about a woman that starts swallowing non-nutrinional items out of boredom and some regressed feelings about her marriage and family...
Away (Download): 70-minute animated movie without a single word of dialogue, made by 1 guy, about a dude that wakes up hanging from a tree with a parachute in a desert landscape. A huge black figure approaches and tries to eat him but he escapes to an oasis where he finds a map of the island he's on. The black giants stands in wait at the entrance to the oasis and will keep tracking him slowly as he makes his way across the island on a motorcycle. Very game-like in both look and feel. The poetic atmosphere is augmented by the superb visuals, which are these stylised untextured polygonal 3D figures that make it stand out from most 3D animations. I've only played a demo of it but it reminded me of that indie game Journey.
Oats Studios - Volume 1 - Rakka (Download): Better version than the Youtube one I had. I'd watch an entire movie of this...
Dissonance (Download): Another short, one that mixes animation and live action, about a desillusioned pianist that switches between real-life and a dream like state that signifies his mental condition. Looks beautiful.
The Wrong Todd (Download): Amusing movie about a guy that gets sent to a different dimension by himself from that dimension in a ploy to steal his own girlfriend from himself.
Meatball Machine Kodoku (Bluray): I remember the first time I downloaded this movie the sound wasn't in sync by literally seconds... ...The same is true for the 5.1 mix on this bluray. OMG, what a mistake. Luckily the other track is fine. It's only the stereo mix but since I'll probably never watch this movie with anything else than headphones, it's fine. It might be one of the bloodiest movies ever made. Japanese splatter at its finest...

Gremlins 2 - The New Batch (DVD/Download): I prefer the madness of this over the original. I love the gene spliced gremlins...
Trainspotting (Bluray): Hasn't been that long since I last saw it but because I bought it on bluray, I had to rewatch it.
T2 - Trainspotting (Bluray): And because I watched the first again, I figured I had to do the same with the sequel.
Bravestorm (Download): Surprisingly neat Japanese movie which I've learned is based on 2 super sentai shows from the seventies, but made with today's technology. The FX aren't up to par with something like Pacific Rim, but it certainly was passable and the designs of the big robots were better than their American counterparts. I ended up liking it a lot better than I had expected...

Babylon - Season 1 (Download): Anime series about a prosecutor stumbling upon a series of apparent suicides that have more to them. Slow to start, then becomes a bit more interesting, then gets extremely talky with a lot of pseudo-phylosophy only to end on a downer. I wasn't a big fan. Funniest thing about it was the US president in this was so unlike the actual one, lol, his 2 nicknames were 'the thinker' and 'the honest man'... ...he was also an avid online role-player. Was hard to take it seriously after that...
Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much (Download): Fun documentary about a guy that knew most of the prices on the game show the Price is Right and his numerous attempts of trying to get on the show and helping other contestants from the audience, including a perfect bid on the last round, which had never happenend before...

Ballmastrz 9009 - Season 2 (Download): I'd seen season 1 but I didn't keep it so I guess I wasn't that big a fan but after watching this second season I'm trying to get the episodes together again to rewatch them. This second season was great. Easily the most anime looking American animated series. They know their classics and are really paying tribute to the looks and styles of them in these episodes. One of them (Epi 4) was a straight-up tribute to Vampire Hunter D and my favorite by far. The primary colours, the hard contrasts, superb looking episode... I've noticed nods to First of the North Star and Attack on Titan as well...

Outbreak (DVD/Download): If not now, when? Watched it with the kids to scare them, lol, don't think it worked. DVD I have had no Dutch subs, so HD download it was. Looked pretty decent. Movie totally holds up. I prefer rewatching this one over Contagion.
Altered Carbon: Resleeved (Download): Goodlooking anime movie from the Altered Carbon universe that I probably would've liked better if there hadn't been an Altered Carbon connection. Certainly not bad, especially the pretty 3D CG style was very appealing...
The Invisible Man (Download): Thanks to the outbreak, we get this movie way earlier than planned, which is good because I got kinda excited when I found out Leigh Whannell did it, on a small budget. Upgrade was pretty good, using the small budget to its fullest, and the same goes for the Invisible Man. I think it was Kevin Smith that said it was a good idea to do it on a budget: "How expensive can it be to shoot a guy that isn't there?"... Anyway, all kinds of good decisions made this movie more than decent a no doubt a lot better then it would have been in that planned cinematic universe...
The Hunt (Download): Heh. Kinda neat. Social commentary-light with an appropriate amount of blood and gore. First half is better than the second but overall it was a very enjoyable flick that especially in the beginning often put you on the wrong foot.
Vampire Hunter D (Download): Finally a Japanese version. The dub for Bloodlust is watachable, the original however less so. But that's a thing of the past now with this version. Classic bloody monster anime that doesn't get made enough anymore.

Luz (Download): Slow but atmospheric arty German horror that's hard to capture into a few words. Many long slow pans accompagnied by synths. Very '80s or even '70s feel. Might very well be a filmed play because most of it is set in a single location. Very specific feel to the look of the film as well, with a lot of grain and specs, but they didn't look artificial. At the end of the credits I found out it was filmed in 16mm so that explains that. I kinda liked it, quite a bit...
Ready or Not (Download): Time for a change of pace. Rich family that's big on tradition plays a game for every new member that gets wed into the family. Not a problem for most of the time, until at this latest wedding the bride draws the only game card that has consequences. Hide and Seek, which means the family has to kill that person before dawn or they believe they will all die themselves. What follows is a very enjoyable horror romp that has fun with the concept. Samara Weaving is the bride, if you've ever heard her scream, you know she has a very distinct but great sounding scream.
The Platform (Download): Aka El Hojo (which I guess means the Hole rather than the Platform). Easy with the social commentary, looks like I crammed them all in a single weekend, lol. Anyway, high concept scifi thriller that's like Cube for the 2020s. I'd say go in without knowing too much for maximum effect. Despite a few flaws, I think this was a superb flick... ...obviously...
Midori - The Camellia Girl (Download): As if I hadn't watched enough weird crap yet, I decided to finish it off with this Japanese live-action movie based on a manga about a girl that joins a circus after her parents die. Extremely colourful visuals to contrast the rather bleak story. It gets weird later on, I mean, it's always weird but it gets crazy weird eventually. It's also quite slow, even the characters talk slowly. Not quite sure what to make of this yet.

Galaxy Express 999: The Eternal Fantasy (Download): Hour-long 1998 anime based on classic content from the '70s and '80s about a train that travels through space. Not being familiar with the content or characters it was still easy enough to get the simple plot. I was surprised however near the end a familiar character showed up when the heroes are trying to run away, their escape is helped by a pirate spaceship captained by one Captain Harlock... Neat.

It featured Riley Reid, a family member, and a Ouija board that had very specific demands which had life or death consequences. If you've ever heard her scream, you know she has a very distinct but great sounding scream. A very enjoyable romp.

You're talking about porn, right?
Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (DVD): Finally. Had planned to watch the last Monty Python movie with the kids when Terry Jones died but they didn't feel like it then. We've seen them all now...
The Orchard aka Hunter's Moon (Download): After 5 minutes I knew I'd made a mistake, after 10 minutes I knew exactly what the 'surprise twist' would be. Movies like this is exactly why I stopped downloading crap blindly. But I liked the poster and I saw Thomas Jane was in it so I hoped for the best. I was wrong, very wrong. It was shit... In case you still feel compelled to watch it, let me spoil it: the family are the werewolves, but if you hadn't figured that out after (at the most) 30 minutes, you might be dumb enough to actually like this movie...
Sweetheart (Download): Now this is how you do a creature feature. Girl washes ashore on a small deserted island after the boat she and some friends were on sinks. None of that is shown btw, you just wake up with her and discover everything as she discovers it. After a few days she gets the impression she isn't entirely alone and she is right. Good little movie. Recommended.
Vampire's Kiss (Download): Oh man, I'd never seen this before, just some clips. Wow, just, wow... The most Cage I've ever seen Nic Cage...
Suicide Squad (Bluray): The Harley Quinn movie dropped so no better time than to rewatch this.

Well, if you want to see porn star acting in a non-pron movie, might I suggest Verotika. Written and directed by Glenn Danzig of Danzig and The Misfits fame. It's an anthology 'horror' of which I only managed to sit through the first segment for now. It's RLM 'Best of the Worst'-level of awful. Holy shit, the acting especially is noteworthy horrendous...
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (Download): OK, but I have to say I liked Suicide Squad better. Harley Quinn works better in smaller doses. It also would've helped if not every single male character in the movie was awful. If it was the other way around, this movie would be called misogynistic, but I don't know if there's a 'big word' for that (fake edit: I just looked it up, it's called misandry, you don't hear that a lot). I mean, I don't really care, nothing wrong with women kicking men's asses (or balls, there are sooo many nutshots in this), but I can't help but notice they seemed to have gone out of their way to try and picture ALL men as awful. Anyway, good fight choreography, some decent action scenes, some jokes even worked but the first half with the intertwining timelines was needlessly complicated. I'm sure someone's going to feel empowered by it all, but the rest of us just watched a mediocre comic book movie.
Bloodshot (Download): Wasn't particulary looking forward to this, imagining it would be quite generic and for a while there it looked like I was right. Looked slick and polished but so predictable and generic: superb soldier sees wife killed then gets killed himself, is resurrected as a superhuman experiment, regains memories and goes rogue to kill wife's killer... ...which is exactly what happens in the first 45 minutes of the movie... ...but then luckily there's a twist that made the following hour much more interesting. I won't spoil it, I'll just say it's not quite as generic as you might think it is. The action is pretty good throughout, good choreography, sometimes a bit too CG-ish but I wasn't too bothered by that to let it spoil the fun. All in all I liked it quite a bit, more than Harley Quinn at least. I thought it was just going to be a Vin Diesel vanity project 'I want to play a super hero' and while that seems to be the case in that first half, there was actually some more thought put into it that made it stand out enough for me to recommend it.
Okja (Download): I kinda skipped it initially but after Parasite, and taking into account I hadn't seen a bad or uninteresting movie by Joon-Ho Bong yet, I decided to give it a go and I have to admit I am once again impressed by the filmmaking of our Korean friend. This movie pulls all the strings. It's very funny and very emotional, it has a message but it's also just fun to watch, yet sometimes it's hard to watch and makes you think about the world and your own actions. It has great acting and quite over-the-top acting, but it never feels out of place. Really impressed with the increase in quality of the movies I watched last night...
Top Secret (DVD/Download): A classic even though it never was my favorite Zucker/Abrahams movie. There's just too many gags not to be entertained throughout.

Ballmastrz 9009 - Season 1 (Download): After being really impressed with the second season I wondered why I didn't hang on to the first. Well, it's OK, some episodes are pretty good, especially the Akira inspired one. That's the thing though, the second season pays much more tribute to these kinds of anime classics while in the first its more sporadical. It's also possible the versions I had weren't all that good because of the very fast and flashy animation it's very prone to artefacting if the bitrate isn't up to it, which was also the case with the second season. I've since redownloaded them in 720p instead of 1080p but roughly the same file sizes so the bitrate should be able to cope with the animation better (I hope).

Ballmastrz 9009 - Season 2 (Download): Last time I posted about this the last 2 episodes hadn't come out yet apparently, but after a rewatch of season 1, a rewatch of season 2 was also required. I mean, it's 10 episodes of 10 minutes a piece, not much to rewatching that. This second season is so much better than season 1, there are more and better references to classic anime and the jokes, animation and action is better. This is almost like Simpsons season 2 compared to Simpsons season 1, well, maybe not that harsh...

State of Play (Download): Documentary about e-sporters in Korea competing in Starcraft. Nobody seemed to enjoy what he was doing and I didn't particulary enjoy watching them do it...

Bad Boys (Bluray): Rewatch, with the kids, of a classic '90s buddy comedy action flick in preparation for the new one, which is directed by a couple of Belgian fellows from the nearby (everything in Belgium is nearby ) city of Antwerp. Not sure if we're going to bother with the second one or not. Underwater (Download): Slick, goodlooking, underwater horror in the style of Deep Star Six but way more expensive. Basic story does the job, excellent production design and FX do the rest. I really liked it. James vs His Future Self (Download): Small scale time travel comedy that was just a tad too romcom-ish for my taste but it was still easy enough to sit through. It was good to see Daniel Stern again. Story is cute. Guy comes from the future to stop himself from inventing time travel... Tales from the Loop - Epi 1-3 (Download): Semi-anthology sci-fi series with Twilight Zone-style setups. Quite slow but so far always intriguing enough to keep watching. Visually quite stunning. 8 episodes in total...

Tales from the Loop - Epi 4-6 (Download): More of the same but not as good. They definately put the less interesting episodes in the middle.
Der Goldene Handschuh (Download): I'd been waiting for this one and then I found out I almost missed it. Apparently it had already passed me by under its English title (The Golden Glove). I had to settle for a lower quality version than usual. Although, because of the ugliness on show here, even a DVD rip would've been enough, lol. Without a doubt one of the dirtiest movies I've ever seen. 4th world people being their ugly selves, getting drunk and fucking and eventually getting killed by the German serial killer from the '70s on whom the movie is based. It reminded me of my mother's (supposed) father and his girlfiend back in the late '70s, early '80s when we used to visit there. Ugly, ugly people, in smelly houses. Ugh. Just seeing them on screen I could almost smell them. That being said: good movie though. Not unlike Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer.

Tales from the Loop - Epi 7-8 (Download): Directed by respectively Ti West and Jodie Foster, the former being the most horror one (but with a neat ending) and the latter tying most of the storylines together with a nice bow.
Cutie Honey: Tears (Download): I cried too, when I saw what they did to Cutie Honey. I loved the campy live-action film from the early 2000s, this is nothing like that at all. It's a serious and seriously generic scifi action movie that happens to star a female lead which they've called Cutie Honey. She isn't as cute as the old one and she doesn't even do a CUTIE FLASH! Could've called it just about anything, just not Cutie Honey, unless it's based on some sort of rebooted franchise I'm not aware of but even then they were wrong to do it...

Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (Download): Compelling stuff. Thought I'd watch one episode and hopefully didn't think much of it so I could skip the rest but like usual I was hooked right away. So far this only seems to have worked with the Witcher, which I shut off after about 15 minutes. Anyway, Tiger King... Of all the despicable people in this documentary series, I disliked that woman the most. There's something off about her. Joe Exotic is weird, but at least he's genuine and honest about his weirdness, that woman is too smart to show her true self. Some goes for the self-proclaimed guru. He's smart. He seems like the nicest guy in the bunch but that's only because he's smart enough to only show that side...
