Sherlock - Season 2 (Download): Season 1 was OK, this was great. Love the chemistry between the characters and the acting. The stories, like the first season are intriguing but also a little farfetched yet all the rest makes up for that. More tonight.
This is 40 (TV): Read everywhere it was shit and I wondered why because I liked all the recognisable and funny sketches... ...at first... ...but then it kept going and it did turn to shit. Hard to feel for the apparent money problems of a family with a BMW and a Lexus and all the luxuries of the first world. All the characters behave erratic and like total dicks, switching moods on a dime and that finale was just so unbelievable I couldn't wait for it to end.

Sherlock - Season 3 (Download): More of the same, just as good yet just as unbelievable but the characters, the characters are just so good.

In the UK, you have to be sure to pick up the 'Skynet Edition'. I've read the earlier version that came out of that movie was all kinds of suck. Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (Download): TV-series created by Max Landis based on the material by Douglas Adams. Can't verify if it's anything like the source material, but I certainly liked the 8 episodes. Reminded me a lot of John Dies at the End but a littlebit more chaotic. Maybe a bit too chaotic at first but once every character is settled in, the time travel plot was pretty neat... Just finished watching the first season of Dirk Gently and loved every single episode. My girlfriend has read the all of the books and really enjoys the casting of Dirk, however, the case from this season isn't one from the book series apparently. He does mention, in the first episode I believe, the other cases he has worked on and he mentions one about an impossible to move couch. That one is from one of the books and is quite good from what she says.

Zoolander 2 (TV): Knew I wasn't going to be able to stay awake through whatever I was going to watch, so I chose something with a bad rep which I didn't particulary need to see but wouldn't mind too much (in case I didn't fall asleep). Let's say it did the job. Eventually rewinded it a few times to see what I had missed because it certainly wasn't as bad as I had expected.

Road (TV): Documentary about 2 generations of road racers in the Dunlop family. These guys are (in)famous in the extremely dangerous sport of driving bikes ridiculously fast over country roads. It was good, if you're into that sort of thing, but the Closer to the Edge documentary was better still...

O.J. Made in America: I am not a football fan, however this documentary is very very good. I knew O.J. Simpson was famous in the 1970s but I didn't realize how famous he was being as I wasn't even alive. Even if you have zero interest in sports its worth a watch just for how well done it is. Solid 9/10 documentary.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Bluray): Actually downloaded this a while back, hoping to watch it with the kids but before I could do so I stumbled upon the bluray so I got that instead. Didn't watch it with the kids however. The movie holds up.
The Girl on the Train (Download): Got mixed reviews, leaning towards negative, but I gotta say: it certainly managed to keep me awake, which is worth something becaise neither the movie I tried watching before this one (Hail, Ceasar (quit after 20 minutes)) or the one I tried watching after (What We Do in the Shadows (15 minutes, quit after having rewound the last 5 of those at least 4 times and still not being able to make it through)). Figured the plot out just slightly over the halfway point, but I still liked it. It was mysterious enough to keep my interest and like I said: to keep me awake, which is more than I could've hoped for.

Deepwater Horizon (Download): Solid disaster movie about that drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico that blew up a few years ago. Nothing special, by-the-numbers, but certainly not bad. You get what's going on and who's doing what and the FX were great, hence: solid flick.
Lone Survivor (Download): Like Deepwater Horizon, based on true events, made by the same director even, but not quite as interesting. Seal Team gets compromised during mission, gets shot at for 90 minutes until 1 remains, hence the title. Started to become a little boring halfway through especially since you know he's going to make it anyway.
La Isla Minima (TV): Surprisingly good, slow murder mystery from Spain, set in 1980, that, despite its slow pace, managed to keep me awake. 2 detectives follow the breadcrumbs until they solve the serial murder of young girls. Simple enough, but great shots and just enough mystery while staying believable and interesting. Good movie. Reminded me of True Detective, which is always a good thing.

Reminded me of True Detective, which is always a good thing. First season TD or second? I loved the first; lots of people I know who also loved it watched S2 and said it was terrible. Turned me off buying it big time.

First, obviously. Second wouldn't have been a bad series if the first season was never made or if it wasn't called True Detective, but those things did happen so in comparison it isn't nearly as good.

Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice 3D (3D Bluray): Heh, I enjoy it, I don't care what anyone says. 3D version is the shorter theatrical too, which I have no problems with. I'll rewatch the longer 2D one with the kids, but I downloaded that before and I wasn't a huge fan of the added scenes.

Second wouldn't have been a bad series if the first season was never made or if it wasn't called True Detective, but those things did happen so in comparison it isn't nearly as good. I watched True Detective season 2 to the end waiting for it to get good. Only 8 eps but I felt it dragged heavily. I thought it was kind of silly that one of the big issues was one of the cops was gay. I mean in 2016 that is hardly a big shocking plot point. The gay cop thing was done to death in The Wire. Rachel McAdams did ok given the material but overall the whole thing was a 7 out of 10 on a good day.

Creepy (Download): Japanese thriller that starts promising but then sadly becomes exactly what you were led to believe from the start, which was disappointing. It's not a bad movie, it's just a shame it plays its hand so early on, taking away a lot of the suspense. The ending at least still offers some surprise.
Why Don’t You Play in Hell? (Download): Another Japanese flick that unlike the previous one doesn't even start promising. It's a crazy and bloody comedy but it just never worked for me. It's about 2 rival Yakuza clans and a group of friends that desperately want to make a movie and while it has a lot of ingredients that could work into its favour, it just never came together for me. All the characters and situations were just plain unbelievable and it all was too silly for its own good.
Backtrack (TV): Something I recorded without really knowing what it was and what it turned out to be was a run-of-the-mill mediocre paranormal thriller about some guy that gets haunted by literal ghosts of his past and goes back to his hometown to see why that is. Something strange did happen though: right as I was thinking: 'this reminds me a lot of those Asian suspense thrillers from the early 2000's', some ghost actually made the AoAoAoAoAoAo Ju-On: the Grudge glottal sound, lol. Watchable but very, very mediocre...

Jeruzalem (TV): Typical found footage fodder with the novelty of it being filmed with google glasses this time around, making sure the picture is even more shaky than usual and littered with additional crap. Made me nauseous but unlike something like Cloverfield, there wasn't enough good stuff to make up for it. First half seems like a tourist guide to Jeruzalem, second half is generic running away from monsters with annoying image breaking up/distorting/freezing whenever something happens. Forgettable.

Gone Girl (Bluray): Was on TV, which made me want to rewatch the movie as well. So very good. Could've been so mediocre, like The Girl on the Train (which I still liked but clearly isn't on the same level as this as far as an audio-visual performance), but leave it to Fincher to elevate potential pulp to a higher level.
Sinister 2 (TV): I expected a sub-par quick cash-in sequel and that's pretty much exacly what I got. Nothing that worked in the first worked here and because there was not even the mystery element of trying to figure out what was happening and why, the movie became completely pointless. It was all just a framework to show more murder videos, which weren't half as scary as before because they became too elaborate. Only thing I liked was the plot beat about the deputy from the first movie going around burning potential Baghuul houses in an effort to try and stop the cycle, but they quickly abandoned that...
Headhunters (TV): Some Norwegian thriller about a dude that bites off more than he can chew and sees his life decending into madness. Walked the fine line between tension and comedy but managed to pull it off. Even the more farfetched elements of the story are easily swallowed because of the pace and fun the whole movie brings...
Death Bell (Bluray): Korean horror flick about a school getting terrorised and students getting murdered one-by-one. Extremely hard to follow because all the students look alike in their uniforms, their names are impossible to remember and it's hard to know where anyone is in that school building. Sadly, in spite of the content, it was also pretty boring and the conclusion was iffy...

I saw the trailer for this a while back and thought it looked interesting... it's about paintings/art dealing as I recall... but then promptly forgot after watching the film I'd put on. Got the next few days off after nightshifts; will look to see if I can find it in a 5-for-£30 deal at HMV or summat.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (Download): They should've followed their own advice and not gone back. I like the first, really like it, but this was just very generic action fodder. No cool characters or interesting bad guys, none of the quirkiness that made the first so much fun, just generic bad guys and generic action scenes, certainly not what you would expect from a big Tom Cruise production. Feels like you could've dropped any B-action star in the lead role and it wouldn't have mattered...

Equilibrium (Bluray): The epitome of early 21st century cool. I'd feared it might not hold up after all this time, but I was wrong. The HD transfer was very nice and the action was unique enough to still stand out in an overcrowded genre.
Detour (Download): The newest by Christopher Smith and I'm glad to say it's closer to Triangle than say, Black Death, which I didn't like as much. It jumps around in the timeline, making you discover what's up piece by piece, though an observant viewer/movie buff will probably figure it out beforehand. Still, for the most part I really liked this flick.
Dark Places (TV): Meh. Apparently based on a book by the same writer as Gone Girl, but I think David Fincher chose the better of the 2 stories (and made a better movie out of it). I'd try to explain it but it's not really worth the effort, look it up on the imdb. Watchable thriller, very forgettable. Hitgirl as a slutty teen however = fapfapfap.
Bad Johnson (TV): Dumb comedy about a guy that blames his dick for everything that's wrong in his life and wishes it would go away for a while, so of course it does, but it becomes a whole new person that starts interfering with the guy's life. Meh, not very good but I made it to the end, now let's never speak of it again.

Spaceballs (Bluray): Maybe not the sharpest bluray in the bunch, but I've seen this movie countless times and I still discovered new things in this HD release so I guess it was worth it...
Eye in the Sky (TV): Didn't really expect anything from it and only found out while watching this was Alan Rickman's final flick, well, it's a good one. This was probably the most nailbitingly suspenseful flick I've seen in a while and most of it is just people sitting in rooms, communicating through phones and computer screens. It's about this impending drone strike that gets fucked up by the presence of a little girl in the target area. The rest you'll have to discover on your own.
Abandoned (TV): 4 guys set out on a trimaran sailboat, rogue wave capsizes it and they are set adrift for 3 months. Surprisingly good flick, apparantly based on a true story as well.

Oh, and earlier this week I saw the last episode of...

Welcome to the Dollhouse: I first heard about this when I started looking up weird movies back in the 1990s. Never took the time to watch it cuz a movie about an awkward junior high girl doesn't sound fun to watch. Now that I have I am pretty damn sure this is where they came up with the idea for Napoleon Dynamite, they even have a similar facial expression. This movie is basically Napoleon Dynamite but far more depressing and less surreal.

Green Room (Bluray): I don't get it... ...the room wasn't green at all... No, for real, good flick, violent and bloody with a very creepy Patrick Stewart.
Banshee Chapter 3D (3D Bluray): I remember downloading this before (in 2D) but I couldn't remember anything about the movie and I hadn't kept the download, which usually is a pretty good indication I wasn't impressed, but the inclusion of 3D on a found footage/faux-doc intrigued me and it was pretty cheap. Actually looks like it was shot natively in 3D, except for the low res stock footage, which was given a rather strange post-processing 3D effect that was really jarring. So yeah, as I was watching, it started coming back to me and the 3D certainly helped to make this somewhat generic fake documentary about MK Ultra type experiments more memorable.
The General's Daughter (TV): Meh. Watchable, forgettable, next.
The Girl with all the Gifts (Download): Based on the cover/poster I was about ready to skip this but a movie buddy made me decide otherwise and I'm glad I did. It's a rather original take on a zombie type infestation that's closer to Day of the Dead than the Walking Dead (thankfully).

Beware The Slenderman: It was just posted on reddits /r/documentaries. Its good but the two hour runtime is kind of padded. It could have been cut down but 30 minutes easy. Unbelievable even tho one of the parents of the girls has full on schizophrenia he didn't know his daughter did?...........that is very strange. Worth a watch.

Ninja Assassin (Bluray): This was a lot bloodier and more violent than I remembered. Does get all a bit samey eventually and the story isn't particulary compelling, but if you're in it for the gore and fights, you won't be disappointed. Also looked like it would've been a great candidate for 3D, with all the depth in the fighting theatres and stuff wizzing at and past the screen, like shurikens and swords.
Terminator Genisys 3D (3D Bluray): You know, the first half of this movie isn't bad, it's when they travel to 2017 when it all starts to go wrong. Until then it's very watchable with some neat moments, especially the 1984 scenes that were copied from the original but not quite. In 2017 however plot and logic are all over the place and even the action starts to suffer, especially the bit with the helicopters. Works well in 3D, but too silly and unbelievable in such a way it pulls you out of the movie completely...
Get the Girl (Download): The new movie by the director of Contracted about a farfetched plan to try and win the heart of a girl by having her kidnapped and being the knight in shining armour that saves her. Except anyone involved is a dumbass in some way so it all goes tits up and shenanigans ensue. Fun flick. Completely unbelievable but I can't say I didn't have a good time...
Unfriended (TV): I completely expected to hate this movie but I can't but admit it was a lot more compelling than I could've predicted of a movie set entirely on the screen of a laptop. First of all I loved how they used the actual look of the programs and not settled for some fake movie version of things like Facebook and Skype. Makes it feel real at least. Of course, once the killing starts it becomes extremely silly, but everything in between was done well I though. Unexpectedly decent in its silliness.

Tropa de Elite (Bluray): Surprised this bargain bin bluray from a company I usually try to avoid actually was a big improvement over the DVD I already had, except for the subtitles, which left quite a bit of dialogue floating in the air. Luckily I'm familiar enough with the movie so it wasn't a problem plot-wise but I still feel like they should have translated more. In any case, still a great movie. Now I can also rewatch the sequel, which wasn't as impressive when I first saw it, but I'm willing to give it another chance.
Arrival (Download): Finally! Missed it in the theatre but really wanted to watch it because so far Denis Villeneuve hasn't disappointed and he still hasn't because I loved it! Slow but deliberate, actually putting some thought behind the proceedings and then nicely coming *cough* full circle /rimshot.
Badlands (Download): Has a classic status but how it got that is beyond me. I thought it was stupid. The characters don't seem to make any sense, they're just spouting nonsense most of the time, plus the girl sees her father gets killed, a man she didn't seem to have any problems with (not like he was abusive or anything) and just doesn't seem to care in the slightest. Then at the end, when this pedophile cop killing murderer gets caught, the police themselves seem to think of him as some heroic outlaw they actually seem to have respect for??? Made no sense to me at all. Guess you have to have been there in the '70 because in the 21st century, I feel this movie wasn't worth my time.
Blood Punch (Download): Now, this is more my kind of crap. Low-budget horror with time travel undertones or, to put it more clearly: Groundhog Day meets Breaking Bad on Indian soil. Trio gets trapped in the same day and have to try and find a way out. Bloody carnage ensues. Loved it.

The VVitch (TV): Didn't expect to like it, that's why I never bothered downloading it. Too many of the wrong people on the movie board liked it and the others thought it was boring. Well, for once I fall into the cinefile's camp. I liked it. There was always a certain tension without having the need for jump scares or visual trickery to create something that should be 'scary'. The situation itself was scary enough. Glad I gave it a chance.

Started last night the same as the night before. First a movie by Jose Padilha, followed by a Denis Villeneuve one, didn't realise until now.
Tropa de Elite 2: O Inimigo Agora é Outro (Bluray): That's the Enemy Within for the rest of us. Whereas the first deals with drug gangs and the corruption inside the local police force, this one broadens the scale and deals with organised crime and corruption within the entire political system. It's still good, better than I remembered, but the down and dirty smaller scale of the first works better in my opinion.
Incendies (TV): I only bothered with this because it was by Denis Villeneuve and on the strength of his later movies because it didn't look like it was going to be for me at all. Well, I'm glad to say I was wrong, the movie was great. It's the slow unraveling of a mystery, twins looking for their lost father whom they believed to be dead and a brother they never knew existed, that takes them from Canada to the Middle East to retrace their mother's steps. Strong filmmaking.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident (aka Devil's Pass) (Bluray): As far as found footage movies go, this is one of the better ones.
Don't Knock Twice (Download): Clearly should've been called Knock Knock but I guess Eli Roth beat them to it. Anyway, UK horror that takes all the elements of generic US horror and creates an entirely new generic horror. Did I mention it was generic? Anyway, it uses its own retarded logic to get things going (don't knock (twice) on the door of this old lady's house because she killed herself and her ghost is going to come for you) and it's all generic haunted house shenanigans from there followed by a silly twist at the end that comes out of nowhere and doesn't even seem make sense in the movie's logic (I don't know, I started falling asleep and couldn't be bothered anymore at that point anyway). Key word: Generic.
