You're right. If it had been all white people I would've liked the story, the characters, the humor and the FX so much more...
Submarine 707b (DVD): Same submarine as the one from Deep Sea, just a lot more recent so a bunch of CG instead of hand drawn animations. Twice as long too but for some reason that's not enough time to tell a simpler story than in the other one so it still ends with a cliffhanger.
Iron Man (Bluray): The intention is to watch every MCU movie in order so the starting point has to be Iron Man. Holds up very well as well, with more convincing FX than Black Panther even though it's 10 years older...
Downrange (Download): Latest Ryuhei Kitamura flick about some kids getting pinned down by a sniper on some deserted road. Sounds interesting and has a few good moments but overall it was pretty weaksauce with a lot of bad acting and dialogue before we get to the good stuff.
Heavy Metal 2000 (DVD): Not so cult as the first one but it's still nice to see an American animated movie that isn't meant for kids.

The Incredible Hulk (Bluray): Probably the weakest of the MCU and Ruffalo is a better Banner than Norton as well. Of all the actor switches that took place early in the MCU, this one is probably the most succesful. Strange how the Hulk never mentions Betty Ross anymore either. I guess if I could choose between Liv Tyler and Scarlet Johansson, I'd go for the Black Widow as well...
Iron Man 2 (Bluray): How pissed is Terrence Howard, do you think? Don Cheadle is a good replacement. New Howard Stark too. Movie is OK but also one of the weaker episodes in the universe...

Thor 3D (3D Bluray): This was the movie I was least interested in back in the day, so much so I didn't even go to the theatre for it. It's grown on me through repeated viewings over the years and now I liked it pretty well.
Captain America: The First Avenger (Bluray): This one on the other hand I've always liked and that hasn't changed. I think it was a great idea to get Joe Johnston to direct it, it's very Rocketeer-ish. Yet another Howard Stark I noticed. In this movie it's the preacher from Preacher...

The Avengers (Bluray): Or as my UK Bluray insists: Avengers Assemble. Guess they didn't want people thinking it was that silly Sean Connory Avengers movie from like the '90s, lol. Anyway, the conclusion to phase 1 is a great movie. Felt like I hadn't seen it in a long time and I don't know why that is because looking at all the movies before and the ones that followed, it's probably one of the best of the entire run. Funny, good character moments, great FX. Ace movie...
Ash vs Evil Dead - Season 3 (Download): Took a few episodes to get into this season. At first I felt it was too much just more of the same and I was feeling serious Evil Dead fatigue, but ultimately it started winning me over with some great horror slapstick (when the Ash-infant starts playing with the decapitated corpse, rofl). It probably still is the bloodiest and goriest show on TV, which is nice.

Deadpool 2 (Theatre): On par with the first. Hilarious in places, ultraviolent in others, sometimes both at the same time. Funny quips at all kinds of people and movie franchises and a few surpises they kept out of the trailers so I won't spoil it here either. If you liked the first, you'll like the second...

^I will probably go see it on Monday which is my day off. The trailer was hilarious. I watched (ironically) half of Split last night, gonna watch the rest of it now. Appears to be a return to form for M. Night Shyamalan, what I saw of it was pretty good. I couldn't help but wonder {CLICK FOR SPOILER} at the beginning, why didn't that girl in the front seat just get out and run when she saw what was going on? I guess it's possible she stayed so she could help the other 2 girls. Or maybe it will turn out she was in on the whole thing?

Smokin' Aces (Bluray): Stylish but the cinematography doesn't hold up as well as more traditionally shot movies. I'm not saying it aged badly but that kind of use of colour certainly was more prevalent in the early 2000s and as such it makes the movie show its age...
Iron Man 3 3D (3D Bluray): Probably the best of the Iron Man movies. At least they don't have him fighting yet another powered suit like in all the other movies. It's also quite funny and it's always good to have Downey out of the suit for long stretches of time.
The Midnight Meat Train - Director's Cut (Download): Sadly still the only American Ryuhei Kitamura movie worth watching.
The Human Centipede 3 - Final Sequence (Bluray): I like the first movie, I loooove the second one but this third one is just utter shit. Bad like you wouldn't believe. It's literally just 100 minutes of Dieter Laser shouting in a bad accent. Right at the end a centipede shows up but the rest of it is like a (bad) Ilsa, She-wolf of the SS movie. Whatever is acceptable in this flick is negated by the total overacting of everyone involved. I hope it was intentional. Funny thing to note though: in this movie they show parts of the second movie, parts that were cut from the UK version of the second one, but here they are, uncut, in the UK version of the 3rd.
Also on the disc, an alternate ending that doesn't redeem the movie, but it would've been better. Everything in this movie was a fever dream from the doctor of the first movie. He wakes up and drives to the parking in the beginning of the first movie, where he mourns the passing of his 'lieber drei-hund', bringing the entire trilogy full circle.

Thor - The Dark World 3D (3D Bluray): I like this movie, more than I do the original Thor. Works well in 3D as well...
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Bluray): No 3D for this one. Watched it in 3D in the theatre and wasn't impressed. Seems like the Russo bros make great superhero movies, but 3D isn't their strong suit. Anyway, one of the best of the entire MCU.

Been watching Evil Genius on Netflix, it's about a bizarre incident in which someone was forced to rob a bank while wearing a collar bomb. The bomb ended up going off while the police had him detained. He had instructions on him that included locations where to find keys to disarm the bomb, which were later found by the police. It happened back in 2003, I'd heard about it then but never knew how much more there actually was to it. An interesting watch, definitely one of the most bizarre cases ever.

American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson (Bluray): Not as good as the OJ documentary but still pretty damn compelling stuff... ...at least once they enter the court room. It's weird how tense it still is, even knowing all the beats from the documentary, so I guess that means they did their job. I only got this because I needed a second TV-series in a 2 for the price of 1 deal and I really wanted to get Ash vs Evil Dead season 2 cheap. I'm glad I chose this.

Trivia, not a spoiler, Josh Brolin is Barbra Streisand's step-son, and it was her singing the song from Yentl, "Papa Can you Hear Me?". Lol, "Fuck, you're old!" comes to mind by referring to that flick, starring Streisand and Mandy Patinkin. I saw the movie today, though while waiting to go in an alarm went off and we were told to evacuate ... into the rain. Anyway, after fifteen minutes or so they handed out "rain-checks" for a later admission in exchange for our current tickets... and then just after that started letting everybody back in. Nobody was checking tickets, so I went in while keeping my new one, and Deadpool 2 started playing right after I got to my seat. As Deadpool might say, who doesn't like a happy ending.
Edit: lol at the comments.
Etc.

So I left to go see Solo this afternoon. It's near where I work, maybe 3 minutes further. Distance to work takes about 20 minutes from where I live. Showing was at 4:30, I left at 3:30, just to have some margin and at 4:25 I still wasn't even close, so I turned the car around and headed back home. WTF? Last week I did exactly the same, at the exact same time and I arrived there with over 20 minutes to spare, even having made a stop at a shop as well.
Got home and watched this instead:
Guardians of the Galaxy 3D (3D Bluray): Probably my favorite of the entire MCU.

Death Wish (Download): The new one, starring Bruce Willis, directed by Eli Roth. I'm gonna give it a big fat meh. I liked the beginning well enough but around the midway point it lost focus and it ended seriously anti-climatic.
The Cat Returns (DVD): Enjoyable feelgood Ghibli movie about a girl saving a cat and then getting taken to the kingdom of the cats against her will.
Space Battleship Yamato (Bluray): Live-action adaptation of the classic anime. Acceptable space CGI, some less acceptable creatures and worlds CGI and a whole lot of anime pathos. It's OK for the few space battles but at 2 hours and 15 minutes it's overdoing it quite a bit...
Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms (DVD): Ok-ish animated Hellboy flick. Not much to tell. Not awful, not memorable either...

Alrered Hours (Download): Alternative time travel movie that lost me along the way. Not quite as smart as Primer even though they really tried to make it confusing. I just lost interest but then the ending redeemed the movie somewhat. Don't know if I'll revisit it or not...
The Avengers: Age of Ultron 3D (3D Bluray): Opinions are divided about this one but I love it. One of my favorites of the entire MCU. Vision picking up Thor's hammer is such an amazing little moment. Hulk rampage is great as well.
Ninja Scroll (Bluray): I've rewatched a lot of anime lately but I'd yet to rewatch my favorite one. And now I have. Still holds up, after 25 years...

Solo: A Star Wars Story 3D (Theatre): Went before work last night, took me exactly 25 minutes to get there, that's more like it. I liked it, actually, and if I'm honest, I wasn't waiting for this movie, not when they announced it, even less after hearing about all the trouble it went through, but I can't deny it being a fun ride, even with the 3D projection being pretty crappy. Picture was drab and murky with bad black levels (even wearing dark glasses), can't wait to watch it again at home without all those problems. It had fun action beats, showed a side of the Star Wars universe not seen before and had some impressive visuals.

Batman Ninja (Bluray): Pre-ordered (in Germany) the bluray not knowing anything about the specs, but it all worked out well. Best of all: the original Japanese track is present (as an extra, not among the languages, which is strange) and it comes with its own subtitle track because the Japanese is quite different from the English dud. The English was OK, but with these types of shenanigans, Japanese just seems to fit better. BATUMAN! JOKA!
Waco - Entire series (Download): 6-part miniseries about the David Koresh/FBI debacle. I vaguely remembered what happened but certainly no details or just how many people lost their lives. It's quite baffling, the final episode is especially tragic. Taylor Kitch is Koresh and Michael Shannon is the lead negotiator, both are great and I couldn't stop watching, had to binge it through to the end. Powerful stuff.
The Belko Experiment (Bluray): Probably as many people died in this, but it's easier to swallow in a splattery gore way (fewer children too). Fun horror romp.

They Remain (Download): Wanted to like it, didn't. Fuck all happens. Almost ruined my night because I kept falling asleep and wasted over an hour pausing and rewinding and in the end it wasn't even worth it.
The Butterfly Effect (Dir. Cut Bluray): The first time I saw this movie, rented on DVD, it was the theatrical and I merely liked the movie. I did end up buying it eventually but it was the director's cut. That director's cut ending, man, transformed an OK movie to a great one. Ever since I never bothered with the theatrical again. Director's cut ending is powerful and the studio should never have interfered.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (DVD/Download): One of my favorite anime doesn't seem to have increased much in resolution on bluray, but the animation was a lot smoother (and no ghosting) than it had been on DVD.

Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex - Season 2 (DVD): No actual stand alone episodes in this one, everything is part of the big overarcing plot that's a bit heavy handed and confusing at first: it all has to do with refugees after the last world war (we're up to 4 on those in the GotS saga, btw) so in a certain regard it's actually really tied in to current events, especially in Europe at the moment, just with more cyborgs. Stick with it though and the final part, where war is threatening to break out, is really great and tense (and emotional, with another sacrifice by the little blue tanks) and makes up for all the slower and confusing stuff in the first half of the series. At least it all works towards something that is worth the effort.

The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) was heavily involved as well. Of course, they were just doing their jobs. I remember hearing that the burn & kill order came from Janet Reno (Attorney General of the United States at that time), who was quite possibly following directives issued by the president himself.

There was way too many conspiracy theories and such at the time for anyone to be objective. Basically yes the government fucked up. They could have arrested Koresh at any time while he was away from the compound which was often. Instead they went in guns blazing and we see the results. That said the dude was fucked up and survivors said that like most cult leaders he was fucking all the women and underage girls. He was a real shitbag. No "good guys"

The problem is those women and children were basically treated like collateral damage, because as you said, they could've just snagged Koresh while he was away. Then, nutters like Timothy Mcveigh took note and used that as (false) pretense for justifying the same rules of engagement against govt.

"There was way too many conspiracy theories and such at the time for anyone to be objective."
Conspiracy or not, they certainly did a great job of skipping a trial and sentencing, and seemingly went out of their way to do so. Based on their actions, the objective appears to have been ending him permanently. In so doing, they put women and children in the crossfire. At least, that's what it looks like to outside observers based on the story we've been given.

Also, consider your stance on the death penalty. If you're liberal, you're probably against it. Right? Well, with the death penalty, at least there's typically a trial. Here, they just went in guns blazing and put a bullet in his head, while mowing down and/or burning a bunch of innocent bystanders. Instant death penalty without the trial and years (or decades) of being stuck in the appeals process. I suppose many of the conservative taxpayers appreciated that (because appeals for inmates on death row costs taxpayers millions).
If the story's controversial to anyone, I'd think that it would be so for the "bleeding heart" people on the left. Do you think you'd feel the same (ambiguity) about the govt's handling of the incident if a Repub were president at that time? Let's be honest, the buck stopped with govt on this one, they made the decisions and took actions that led to the death of women and children.

13 Novembre: Flucuat Nec Mergitur (Download): 3-part documentary on Netflix about the Paris terror attacks. Gripping stuff as they piece together a timeline with the help of eyewitness accounts, amateur footage and 911 calls. Just watch it.
La Isla Minima (Bluray): Spanish murder mystery that's reminiscent of True Detective. Caught it on TV a while ago and felt the need to watch it again so I bought the bluray. It's pretty great. Set in a post-Franco Spain, 2 detectives following clues that leads them along the way. Looks good too, with some haunting aerial shots.
Starship Troopers: Invasion (Bluray): Bought the new CGI movie, Traitor of Mars, but wanted to revisit this one first. You know, I remembered it to be better. It was OK, but it all felt so bland and generic.
Infinity Chamber (Download): Blind download, people seemed to like it, though at first I thought I had screwed up. The set design of the main location looked so incredibly cheap (it was obviously a very low-budget movie) and the story didn't seem particulary interesting, kind of a mix between Cube and Portal, without the portals, but I stuck with it and you know, it slowly started to win me over and by the end I was glad I stuck with it.
Blood Father (Bluray): Another one I caught on TV before and ended up buying. Simple enough story that's pushed along by some good set pieces and actors and the occasional bout of ultraviolence.

Blade Runner 2049 3D (3D Bluray): The perfect Blade Runner sequel. Couldn't have wished for anything better. Thanks, Denis.
Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars (Bluray): More of the same, just a bit sillier. Enjoyable enough but like everything Starship Troopers, nothing comes close to the original Verhoeven movie.
Vampire Hunter D (Download): Great restoration. Even though this movie is way older than Bloodlust and the animation isn't as good, the HD version fares a lot better, I'm guessing because it was still made on film in the 1980's and Bloodlust probably isn't. Extremely bloody and violent. So far for the good points, the bad however is the English dub, which is atrocious. Doesn't look like they had a script and they just made something up by looking at the pictures, it makes no sense. Why is it so difficult to find Japanese versions of Vampire Hunter D movies? Even Bloodlust I've only seen in English (but at least that dub isn't that bad).
The Gift (Bluray): Good thriller with a great ending.

The Expanse - Season 1 (Download): Pretty good, though I'm not as invested in it as I was in Battlestar Galactica and I hate they end season 1 like they do (i.e. not at all) so instead of waiting a bit before starting season 2 I have to do it right away because nothing was concluded. I like the space stuff, pretty good effects but the lighting of the indoor scenes I'm not that big a fan off. Too many harsh white lights. Looks like I'm being more negative than I am really.

It (Download): The new one... ...it was very... ...mediocre. In spite of a few neat fucked up visuals, it wasn't scary in the least and it all looked and felt so artificial. Too polished and way too predictable in the jump-scare department. Loud noises alone aren't enough to startle a seasoned horror veteran like myself. Also: 2 hours and 12 minutes of this shit?
The Frighteners (Bluray): Fucked up buying this. Cover of the bluray is the same as the special edition extended cut of the DVD, except this isn't that, it's just the theatrical. Didn't notice that before buying it. Not that there is anything wrong with the theatrical, it's just a cheap way to confuse people. Usually I'm smarter than that but in this case I got duped a little. Anyway, still a neat movie.
Afro Samurai (DVD): I wonder if there's a Japanese version of this or if it's specifically made with Sam Jackson in mind to do the voice.
