It (Download): The new one... ...it was very... ...mediocre. In spite of a few neat fucked up visuals, it wasn't scary in the least and it all looked and felt so artificial. Too polished and way too predictable in the jump-scare department. Loud noises alone aren't enough to startle a seasoned horror veteran like myself. Also: 2 hours and 12 minutes of this shit? The Frighteners (Bluray): Fucked up buying this. Cover of the bluray is the same as the special edition extended cut of the DVD, except this isn't that, it's just the theatrical. Didn't notice that before buying it. Not that there is anything wrong with the theatrical, it's just a cheap way to confuse people. Usually I'm smarter than that but in this case I got duped a little. Anyway, still a neat movie. Afro Samurai (DVD): I wonder if there's a Japanese version of this or if it's specifically made with Sam Jackson in mind to do the voice. Is this the latest, fifteenth anniversary, edition? If so it should have both versions on it.

I enjoyed it for what it was, it looked really good in IMAX, yes it was too slick and all but people forget how bad the original miniseries looked. That's mediocre too. Only reason anyone likes that is because of Tim Curry... Love how they went completely the other way for the bluray. DVD had the bad cover for the theatrical and the cool one for the SE, bluray does exactly the opposite. Gunhed (DVD): Ripped it first because I can't play the region 1 DVD in the PS3 and it would give me more customisation options when playing it with the media player, which is sorely needed because the non-anamorphic DVD is way too bright. Upscaled and all that jazz, it did look reasonably acceptable, considering the source material. Love all the miniature work and the look of the robot tank. Someone like Arrow or the people that did that German Death Machine bluray should get a hold of this movie and do what they do with it. I'd pay whatever the asking price... The Lure (Bluray): The best Polish erotic horror musical with mermaids I've ever seen...

The Expanse - Season 2 (Download): Better than the first season, might just be a feeling but I thought it looked better too, less harsh lighting. Anyway, picks up right where the first left off and again doesn't end with some or other conclusion so the beginning of the 3rd season picks up where this one leaves off. I guess that's no problem when I'm breezing through them but if I have to wait a year after the current season ends in a week, that's going to be hard to pick up again without rewatching stuff. Anyway, that's all nitpicking, it's just a good scifi series, I just hope they eventually take it to some or other logical conclusion.

Brotherhood of the Wolf (Download/DVD): Le Pacte des Loups is probably my favorite French movie of all time. Looks great, the action holds up (the CGI less so but it never gets too awkward)...
Legion - Season 2 (Epi 1-5) (Download): I love this series. There's nothing quite like it and season 2 is off to a great start. Visually it's unlike anything else, with all kinds of trickery and funky camera angles.

Legion - Season 2 (Epi 6-11) (Download): While I feel they seem to have used all their best ideas in the first half of this series, it's still a great watch. The animated finale looks amazing.

The Departed (Netflix) : Hadn't seen this one since around the time it came out. WOW, I had forgotten what a damn good movie this is, was glued to it the whole time. I remember there being talks about a sequel, it's too bad that never happened but it was wrapped up very neatly all the same.

F is for Family - Season 1 (Download): Wasn't easy to still get this and ended up with a version that was only mediocre (the only one that still had any seeds) but I wanted to refresh the first season before starting the second.

F is for Family - Season 2 (Download): Season 1 was OK, good but nothing special, Season 2 ramps up everything and takes full advantage of being on Netflix, so expect to see some schlong. I loved it...

Speaking of animated stuff on Netflix, there's a new show from Matt Groening coming in August:

The Expanse - Season 3 (Download): I picked up watching this right after I completed season 2 but I had to wait an extra week to watch the finale because it was only aired earlier this week, still, pretty good timing if you ask me. There's a big piece of closure around episode 5 or 6 with a few storylines coming to a close. The remainder of the series centers around the protoparticle and how it manifests, turning more into 2001, but still very good. The ending is open but if they decide to stop, it's also satisfying enough.

Donnie Darko (Bluray): I bought another one, the UK Arrow release because reviews told me it was better than previous versions. After the movie I compared it to the German bluray and yeah, it's better, it's not that apparent everywhere, but sometimes it's a lot better, I guess it's just a more even transfer. I'm glad I upgraded one of my favorite movies, where everything seems to work perfectly, even if it turned out to be just a coincidence, as proven by the director's cut, that doesn't work at all. Recently I even read Echo & the Bunnymen's Under the Killing Moon wasn't the song Kelly wanted to use for the opening... Huh? I couldn't think of anything else that would make more sense, it even has Bunnymen in the artist's name! How much more perfect can you get? Anyway, rant over: perfect movie, just ignore the director's cut, which is shit...
Prince of Darkness (Bluray): Great HD transfer. Studio Canal really treats these John Carpenter classics with respect. The movie is strange, really slow to start off but under the relentless thumping of the synth bassline the madness ramps up till the spectacular finale that still makes my skin crawl.
They Live (Bluray): Like Prince of Darkness, another great transfer and an even more cult classic. So good...

IMO John Carpenters weakest movie. Saw it in college and could barely pay attention to it. The Thing is a classic and In the Mouth of Madness is good but Prince of Darkness is meh.

Batman Ninja (Download): Bluray doesn't have Dutch subs so to watch it with the kids I reverted back to the downloaded version, which is in English, but after having seen it in Japanese, I have to say I prefer that version.

Just noticed I didn't post the one I saw the night we left on holiday.
From Dusk Till Dawn (Bluray): Holds up incredibly well, looks pretty good too in HD. I'm not that big into vampires but this is definately one of the better ones.

Westworld - Season 2 (Download): Binged 9 episodes of this yesterday and the last one today. While I still really liked it (I wouldn't have watched it all in a single day otherwise), it was less surprising and a lot easier to follow. One episode stood out to me, the one that was all about the native American host, I really liked that one. I wonder if they'll keep going because there's an opening for more (only it wouldn't be in Westworld itself). I'd watch it, but to be honest, I also wouldn't mind if they ended it right here, that would be satisfactory...

The Chaser (Download/DVD): Why is it that Korea does serial killer flicks so well? There's a bunch of good ones and this one is amongst those.
Coherence (TV): Have it on bluray but wanted to watch it with the wife because I figured she might like it and she generally doesn't want to watch movies without subtitles (don't ask). Turns out she didn't particulary like it, I however did.

I watched the first episode of Cobra Kai on Youtube, first 2 episodes of season 1 are free. I didn't expect a series that's a sequel to The Karate Kid to be good, but it's actually pretty good. I might sign up for the free trial of Youtube Premium so I can finish watching the rest of them. *edit* Watched all 10 episodes. I liked the whole story with Daniel and Johnny but there's a lot of sappy stuff and family drama in between too that is a little much at times. Also the story gets a little predictable and it's basically a re-telling of the original movie, just modern and with new characters. There is some comedy in it too.

Luke Cage - Season 1 (Bluray): Season 2 is out but I bought the first season a while ago and hadn't gotten around to watching that again so I figured I'd revisit that before binging season 2. So far, out of all the Netflix Marvel shows, it's the second best, after the first season of Jessica Jones.

Luke Cage - Season 2 (Download): About as good as the first season, though maybe a tad too long, but that's the case with all these Marvel series. Continues with the Black Maria/Shades storyline and brings that to a satisfying conclusion.

A Quiet Place (Download): Ok, with some good moments but doesn't hold up to close scrutiny. Why the hell would you even consider having a baby when every little sound might get you killed? Anyway, it wasn't bad, better than most horror that males it to theatres nowadays.

Ant-Man and the Wasp (Theatre): I liked the first Ant-Man better. Not that there was anything particulary wrong with this one, it was fine, but following up on something like Avengers Infinity War is a pretty thankless job.

Welcome to the Jungle/The Rundown (Bluray): Fun little adventure/action movie I picked up for a just a few €. It was because it was so cheap, I wouldn't have otherwise because I already have it on DVD but for €3 I couldn't pass it up. Managed to keep me awake last night, which is more than I could ask for.

Ant-Man 3D (3D Bluray): Finally continuing my rewatch of the entire MCU. Had to put it on pause because I was still missing a couple, which I've bought in the meantime. That being said though, I might skip the next 2 (Civil War and Dr Strange) because I've seen both fairly recently, in february.
Ready Player One (Download): Watched this with the kids so now I won't have to look for Dutch subs anymore when I buy it (in 3D).

Spring Breakers (Bluray): Took a while before I started getting into this one. At first I hated the glorification of these airheads and the complete vulgarity of the Spring Break phenomenon but then slowly it started becoming something else. I knew it wouldn't be something conventional, coming from Harmony Korine, but I was surprised at how crass it was. He's usually about the weird but this was just vulgar... ...but then James Franco showed up... "Look at my shit", he totally saved the movie for me.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 3D (3D Bluray): Probably one of the most enjoyable movies in the MCU and of the best depictions of Spidey ever (I still think Raimi's second Spider-Man movie is the best one). Only gripe I have with it is the casting of Flash Thompson, and to a lesser extent MJ. I mean, I'm all for diversity but let's not get nuts. MJ is so well established as this classic redhead and Flash as a straight up meathead jock, I think it's stupid to change that around. But both work in the movie, so who cares...
