Yeah, now that you mention it, at one time I checked to see where I was, thinking it was almost over and it turned out it was only just halfway. I did feel like it picked up the pace somewhat after that. That being said, I still can't say I didn't like it. I did read an hilarious line in a review from someone that didn't like the movie.
Fake edit: Found it: 'Leo has been rendered unable to speak by one of those throat-slashing Amish motorboating accidents that are always in the news'

Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with Me (Bluray): I bought a boxset of the TV-series and this movie was also in it. Since I don't really have the time to rewatch the entire series at the moment, but season 3 is still relatively fresh in my mind, what better time to rewatch this movie, which I hadn't seen since way back in the day, rented on VHS, and the only thing I thought I remembered ultimately didn't even show up in the movie at all, lol. In any case, as little sense as some stuff made, I really liked it. Lynch is starting to grow on me, something I've noticed while watching season 3 and this movie was a lot like that season.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 3D (3D Bluray): And Black Panther is supposed to be the best MCU movie? Fuck that shit, did they see GotG2? It's fun yet very emotional but also looks great, every shot looks like postcard, all the designs, as outlandish as they are, are amazing and let's not forget the CGI doesn't look like it was from at least a decade ago. There just aren't any black people in it (none that still look black in any case). The Guardians movies might be my favorites in the MCU.
The Human Centipede - First Sequence (Bluray): Mein lieber 3-Hund...
The Human Centipede 2 - Full Sequence (Bluray/Download): The trilogy boxset I bought of this series of movies was from the UK, which means: severe cuts in part 2, something I was already aware of, but it was a nice set for an affordable price so I just downloaded an uncut version of this second part to work around that issue. The set also contains a DVD with the second part in colour, I skimmed through that but I find the B/W version to be just that much more grimy and disgusting. I did notice there was a hella lot of blood, lol, but I kinda like in the B/W version you can't clearly make out what the ground of his warehouse is covered with, which makes it seem even dirtier than it really is in colour. Apart from the blood, it's no even that bad of a setting, yet in B/W it's just nasty.

Passengers (Bluray): You know, the parts I like about this are actually the relationship ones. At the end, when they need to repair the ship (and it's very scifi powerplant), is when it all falls apart a bit because up to that point it's pretty engaging. I found it amusing in both this and the Last Man on Earth guys apparently turn into complete slobs that stop shaving when they're left to their own devices and there's nobody else around.
Lethal Weapon 2 (Bluray): Best of the bunch even though, sadly, the LW-boxset doesn't have the director's cuts version for the first 2 movies, which means some (small character) stuff is missing in this version (but a pretty important bit in the first movie but I'll get around to that when I watch that one)
Ghost in the Shell (Bluray): Never been a huge fan and now I know why: because apparently I've always seen a version with pretty shitty subtitles and only last night did it make 100% sense to me. The subs on this UK version are that much clearer than the Dutch DVD I've been watching all these years (picture was very nice as well, btw) and suddenly it all started falling into place. Where the story seemed confusing and jumbled before, it now made sense, so refreshing. I never figured that could be the cause, but it started making even more sense when I started watching the second...
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (Bluray): ...because this was the complete opposite! I was scratching my head at what was on screen so often I went and fetched the downloaded version I already had and started comparing them. Yup, the American versions I'd been watching up to this point (DVD and the download) are subtitled so much better than this UK version, it isn't even funny anymore. I compared several scenes and a lot of times the UK version doesn't even really makes sense and contradicts itself. Like for instance, the company that makes the gynoids that go nuts is called Locus Solus, but in the UK version, all of a sudden, it's Rox (say Locus with a Japanese accent, it sounds like Rox)... ...Until about an hour in, when those words actually appear written somewhere and from then on, the UK subs also use Locus Solus, how would a casual viewer even know this? The entire first half they've been talking about a completely differently named company! I'd hoped to be able to delete the download to make room (it's a rather big version) but I'm just going to hold onto it now because I honestly can't watch the UK version anymore with those confusing subtitles...
Oh yeah, I also compared English dubs, they are different as well, weirdly. The voices are very similar in tone but they don't say the exact same things, the phrasing or just certain words are different, but at least they basically said the same thing (unlike the subtitles)...

Jessica Jones - Season 2 (Download): Nothing's ever going to be able to top that first season with that amazing bad guy, Kilgrave, but I'm glad Jessica Jones still manages to be interesting without him (even if he does make a cameo appearance and his bits are my favorites of this season as well). I'm also glad they kept it personal and didn't go the route of some vague crime syndicate for Jessica to battle. In short: not as good as first but certainly not among the weaker ones.

Get Out (Bluray): Enough has been said about this one. I like it, the ending especially because there's also an alternate ending on the bluray where the movie ends exactly as you'd expect and it's a lot less gratifying.
Knights of Badassdom (Bluray): A surprising amount of entertainment in this one, where real-life role-players accidentally unleash a demon. Just when I thought it was losing steam, they introduce a big demon for them to battle, which looked like it was all practical rubber monster shenanigans, which gets a fun+2 boost in my book.
Grabbers (Bluray): Fun little Irish monster movie that follows the classic monster movie build-up really well but then, around the halfway point, forgets what it was trying to do. I guess you could claim all the characters become dumb because they're all drunk but it's a shame because the first half is so strong.
The Gracefield Incident (Download): Everything that's wrong with found footage movies is in this found footage movie. I should've switched it off after 5 minutes when the guy was constructing a tiny camera that fit in his eyehole. The rest of it is basically Signs, just with people running around in a forest and shouting. Avoid.

Watched "The Outsider" (Netflix movie), Jared Leto plays an American POW in Japan during WWII, while there he finds connections with the Yakuza and joins them. It was nothing special but I found it to be decently entertaining. Probably won't watch it again though.

Annihilation (Download): Dumped on Netflix everywhere but the US where it did get a theatrical release. Guess I should be thankful because I would've had to wait longer to see it otherwise and that would have been a shame because I'm really impressed. I loved it. Everything Prometheus and its sequel should have been: smart, interesting and an audiovisual feast. Not unlike Arrival in atmosphere but completely different in every other way even though it does feel like a bit like a Denis Villeneuve movie. Alex Garland is a smart filmmaker that doesn't treat the audience like they're all dummies (also see Ex Machina). Recommended for the serious scifi lover...

I really enjoyed it as well but I read a couple of bad reviews that had me kind of amused. They said it was a bad movie because it is just a bunch of setting the stage and explaining nothing. I didn't see it that way at all. I love Silent Hill but they never really explain everything in those games.

I think it explains enough, if you're smart enough to pick up on it. It's not handholding, like Chris Nolan for example, so even the dumbest members of the audience can follow along. Like Under the Skin, which this reminded me of as well, it expects you to be smart enough to make up your own mind. Not even Natalie Portman's character has the answers. 'Is is carbon based?' 'I don't know.'

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Bluray/Download): Because I thought the kids had already seen the movie, I didn't take them into account buying the bluray so it had no Dutch subtitles. Turns out they hadn't and I couldn't show them the bluray so even though I didn't download it before, I still had to just to show it to them, lol. They need to learn English asap. Anyway, good movie but I prefer it in 3D.
Blue Velvet (Download): Since I'm in the process of rediscovering David Lynch I figured revisiting this movie, which I guess some might consider his best, was in order... ...Yeah, I'm still not really on board. I mean, I like the Dennis Hopper parts for the craziness but overall, I dunno, I find it hard to get into. Even though it's one of the more straightforward Lynch movies, I find it hard to take seriously since every situation is just so improbable.
Lethal Weapon (Bluray): And that's it for the set, watched them all in reverse order. First one is definately the most violent and least jokey one.
White Bird in a Blizzard (Download): Last week it suddenly popped into my head: "I wonder if one of the more prolific director of the '90s, Gregg Araki, has done something recently", I mean, Kaboom is 2010 already. Turns out he has, and this is it and it's watchable but it's nowhere near as crazy as you could expect from him. More Mysterious Skin than Doom Generation and while most would probably prefer the former, I'm one that likes his GenX trash more. It's an unconventional mystery about a mother that disappears and a daughter that doesn't really care. I kinda liked the ending though. Eva Green's American accent however is anything but convincing...
2LDK (DVD): The wife needed a movie to show at school, but it needed to be shorter than 80 minutes. After some thinking I came up with a few, this being one of the first things I thought of. And it made me want to rewatch it as well because it had been a while. I don't think it's suitable for her to show at work though, not because of the theme, but because I don't think those dumb highschoolers are willing to sit through the first 30 minutes that are very Japanese and slow-ish, but I think you need to set up the tension/relationship before you can begin to destroy it. In case you didn't know, it's about these 2 girls living together that can't really stand eachother which slowly escalates into bloody confrontation.

Veronica (Download): Spanish version of Ouija, directed by Paco Plaza of °Rec fame, which is about the only reason I watched it. Can't say I particulary liked it. Predictable and not very scary (to me, apparently people ran out of the theatres where this was shown). Decidely mediocre in every way except for a scene here and there. Tag (Download): Insane Japanese movie that can't live up to its opening sequence <-- click for gif. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad but something that crazy can't get a satisfying explanation or ending and that's exactly what happens. It's fun and gory while it lasts, just don't expect it to make sense... Armageddon (DVD): No, not that one, a '90s Korean anime I bought almost a decade ago and probably didn't like much when I watched it back then because I haven't watched it again in all those years. It's been so long, I couldn't even remember a single thing about it, except that I never watched it again, which meant I must not have liked it a lot. But for some reason, last night I wanted to revisit it (in fact, I'm going to rewatch more anime movies, browsing through the collection last night made me curious about some other ones I haven't seen in ages). That being said: yeah, it wasn't great but I can't say I hated it. English dub (only option) probably didn't help, but the story was quite nonsensical and all over the place. It basically spans the entire universe and billions of years but ends with a few dudes fighting each other. Heh, can't believe it took me almost 10 years to rewatch this... ...DVD-profiler told me I paid €2.80 for this in 2009. Seems about right, lol. Annihilation (Download): Totally holds up in a second viewing. I sincerely hope this makes it to bluray so I can own a physical copy.

Vampire Wars (DVD): Another manga I hadn't seen since I bought it, on the same day as Armageddon, for the same price. Basically James Bond vs the space vampires but not as bad as I though, you know, not having made an attempt to watch it again in the past 9 years. You know what it is, both these DVDs have horrendous looking cover art which makes them seem like absolute trash, but the discs themselves are genuine Manga discs and the quality of the prints is pretty decent considering these aren't especially well known anime movies. Best I can guess is these are South African re-issues of UK or US Manga releases. See you in another 9 years...

Spriggan (DVD): 40 minutes in I gave up on the Engrish subtitles that came with this HK DVD and I got some off the internet which I played on a laptop while watching the rest of the movie on the TV because they were so fucking bad. The movie itself is pretty decent. Good animation but pretty dumb plot even though it made a lot more sense when I read the subtitle file up to the point where I quit watching. Started downloading a HD version which hangs at 99.8% with 5MB remaining. It plays without any problems though, except for the fact I can't find any synced subs for it, doh! HD rip is from an Italian bluray and only has Italian subs. So far, none of the half dozen I tried are any good.

Pacific Rim: Uprising 3D (Theatre): Wasn't a big fan of the beginning and started fearing the worst but slowly it won me over and by the end I was totally with all the nonsense on screen. Especially in 3D it was pretty spectacular. Story was, well, secondary to the action, but serviceable. I can dig it.

Mortal Kombat (Bluray): Looked pretty decent in HD, except of course for the crappy CG, but then that always looked shit. The rest of the movie looks pretty good however: big, practical sets with lots of production design and of course a big mechanical puppet for Goro. The Cage-Scorpion fight still rocks and so does the soundtrack... MORTAL KOMBAT! Kids seemed to like it as well.

Fargo - Season 3 (Download): Another great season. David Thewliss is great as the bad guy, but so is everyone else. Ewan McGregor is great in both roles he plays even. First season is still the best (most quirky), but there hasn't been a weak season of Fargo yet.
Renaissance (Bluray): Most amazing looking animated movie. Had been a while since I saw it but it still looks like nothing else.
Casshan: Robot Hunter (DVD): Another anime I hadn't seen since I bought it and it's going to be a while before I'll watch it again. Animation's pretty good, it's just not that interesting, in spite of their being a lot of robot fighting action.
Dead Leaves (DVD): The most insane (animated) movie you'll ever see.

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (Bluray): Silly nonsense with some godawful CG but I can't say I don't like it for what it is, which is silly nonsense with some godawful CG.
Under the Skin (Bluray): Strange, weird but oddly compelling.
Appleseed (Download/DVD): Tried many times to get this on bluray but it never panned out and even downloading a decent HD version isn't easy. Took me 2 weeks to get this 8GB bluray rip and I never even came across a complete seed in all that time. Last 800MB took the brunt of those 2 weeks, only getting a few MB here and there.
The Fast and the Furious (Bluray): Even though I told myself I wasn't going to replace the DVD's I had of a couple of those movies, a 7-movie limited edition boxset (that even came with a little car) for a mere €13 was just too good to pass up. Never even saw 6 or 7 so it would almost be worth it for those alone. Anyway, starting at the beginning, this was a lot less awful than I thought it would be. It's actually a decent movie where things get set up that pay off later and an overall structure that's pretty decent. Kinda surprised by that.
Princess Mononoke (Download/DVD): Have it on DVD but also found a spectacular looking HD version. Might need to get the bluray of this eventually.
Source Code (TV): Have this on bluray but no Dutch subs, this was the perfect way to watch it with the kids.

2Fast2Furious (Bluray): See, here's how it's already going downhill big time. Plot makes little sense, racing cars is shoehorned in and it's just all kinds of stupid. This and the 4th are probably my least favorites in the series.
To Kill a Man (Bluray): When I downloaded this, it was called 'Detour' and it's the most recent movie of Christopher Smith. Stylish crime shenanigans that's maybe not too plausible but moves at a good pace not to let it bother me too much...
Killing Hasselhoff (TV): Dumb but short, with a few laughs but not enough to see past the stupidity of it all.

Tales from Earthsea (DVD): Another Ghibli but a lot less interesting than Mononoke, which explains why I never saw it again since 2011, when I first bought it. To be honest, it wasn't that bad, just quite slow and certainly not very spectacular. The animation is Ghibli quality but the designs seem simplified and not really movie quality, that being said, for an SD DVD it looked great on the HDTV. I also had to rip the DVD because it showed weird things when I played the disc on the PS3. The subtitles were in the middle of the screen and the lower third of the screen was covered by a white bar whenever there was a subtitle. Never seen that before.
The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift (Bluray): Still my favorite of the ones I've seen. Story makes more sense than most in the series (no dumb undercover police work) and the drifting is just cooler than the typical street racing. Movie has a lot more style than the previous ones as well.
XX (Bluray): Horror anthology I didn't particulary like the first time around but I bought anyway just for the final segment which elevates the entire movie above mediocrity. You just need to get past the first 2 segments because it keeps getting better after those.

Tokko - entire series (DVD): Anime series I've watched before, probably even twice, but still couldn't remember anything about. Now I hope I'll remember that after 13 episodes there isn't really a satisfying conclusion so it's all a bit pointless. Feels like a quick wrap-up of a series that needed a second season but wasn't given one, kinda like how they abruptly ended Penny Dreadful at the end of the 3rd season.

Yeah it's true there is an overabundance of superhero movies right now. Still, I found Justice League to be entertaining and the characters were likeable enough.
I heard "A Quiet Place" is really good, that's not a superhero movie. I was gonna go see Black Panther but I might go see A Quiet Place instead. Also still want to check out Annihilation.
