Bushwick [DVD] - Picked up for £3.00 on the way home from work this morning. I actually bought the soundtrack the day it was released due to being a big fan of Aesop Rock (it's well worth a listen) but didn't really think about picking up the film - the low price swung me - I'm glad I did as I really enjoyed it; although looking at some online review scores now it would appear I'm in a minority. Fuck those know-nothing cunts anyway.

Skyfall (Bluray): If he hadn't been so vain and his only goal was killing M, he would've killed her with the explosion and saved himself a lot of trouble. Otherwise: good movie.
Ouija (Bluray): It's remarkable how completely unremarkable this is. Generic in every single way. I thought for sure we were going to learn stuff about the other characters, you know, like Unfriended, but it was just a generic haunted house story. I do hear the sequel is better, which is good because I have a boxset containing both...
Perfect Blue (Bluray): This anime psychological-thriller holds up really well.
The Babysitter (Download): ROFL, I enjoyed this. I skipped it when it first was 'released' because of mixed reviews, but most of all because the cover made it seem like a slasher and I'm not really a slasher enthousiast. Why didn't anyone just tell me it wasn't a slasher at all, I would've watched it so much sooner. Really fun horror comedy, stylewise it reminded me of Detention.

The Crazies (Bluray): One of the few horror remakes from a few years ago that was worth the time and effort and still is.
Borg/McEnroe (Download): Don't care about tennis in the slightest, but this was a great movie. I only really wanted to see it because Shia Lebeouf plays McEnroe and I was curious about that. He's great but the rest of the movie was too. Very compelling and if you have no idea who would go on to win Wimbledon in 1980, like I did, it's extremely tense as well. Glad I took the time to watch this.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (Bluray): Last time I watched this I couldn't stay awake, which has nothing to do with the movie because it's a very good haunted house horror even though the haunting is probably the least interesting part of it. The autopsy itself and discovering, with the characters, everything the corpse has to offer is really neat.
Independence Day: Resurgence 3D (3D Bluray): Big budget B-movie that ticks all the boxes of the genre and is really entertaining if you let it. Just don't think about it. Sets itself up for a sequel, wonder if they're ever gonna do it...

@ ID Resurgence, I didn't go in with high expectations and I think I enjoyed it more because of that. Wouldn't mind a sequel.

Hey Cop, remember how you liked that Bill Paxton film? I just stumbled on another one of his, Frailty. I just started watching, and it's good. "Frailty is a 2001 American psychological thriller-horror film, directed by and starring Bill Paxton, and co-starring Matthew McConaughey. It marks Paxton's directorial debut. The plot focuses on the strange relationship between two young boys and their fanatically religious father, who believes that he has been commanded by God to kill demons disguised as people." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frailty_%28film%29" Roger Ebert in particular singled it out for praise, giving the film four out of four stars and declaring that "Frailty is an extraordinary work, concealing in its depths not only unexpected story turns but also implications, hidden at first, that make it even deeper and more sad.""

Had it on DVD for ages and last year I replaced it with the bluray, so yes, I'm already aware of its existence. I just realised we lost both Paxton and Powers Boothe last year.

Mayhem (Download): Jay from Redlettermedia liked this more than a similarly themed movie named The Belko Experiment, which I liked myself so I needed to give this a go as well. It stars Glenn from The Walking Dead, obviously having a lot more fun than he was having in that series and the girl from the Babysitter. It's a violent but fun romp, but so was Belko for me as well. Can't decide which I like best yet. I'll have to rewatch both or at least Belko. In any case, both will be in the bluray collection before long.

The Big Short (Bluray): Such a great movie, informative but entertaining as well with some great acting.
Altitude (Bluray): I remembered liking this movie quite a bit on DVD but I hadn't seen it in a long time. It didn't age as well as I had hoped. I liked the second part but it started a bit slow and especially annoying with too much shouting.
The Lego Movie 3D (3D Bluray): Fantastic movie with a good message for all and some of the funniest moments...

Thor: Ragnarok (Download): Forgot to add this yesterday. Watched it with the kids, now the long wait for an affordable 3D bluray version begins.
Leviathan (Bluray): Looks better than it probably deserves even though as far as B-movie rip-offs of Alien (and the Thing) go, it isn't half bad. Familiar characters, very Alien-like setting and story build-up and FX by Stan Winston, so there's a whole lot to like in this. Sets were pretty good as well. I've always preferred Deep Star Six, but I think a rewatch might be in order.
Split (Bluray): Solid thriller, but that little addition at the end just makes is fucking perfect...
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (Download): Why do I keep watching these animated Batman movies? I haven't really liked any of them. Not a big fan of the animation in this one either, nor do I like the character designs but at least the story turned out to be somewhat surprising. I had a few ideas of who the ripper was most likely going to be, but I'm glad it turned out to be none of those...

Murder on the Orient Express(2017): Ever hear someone describe a movie as pedestrian? This might just be the most pedestrian movie I have ever watched. The actors all do a fine job but it just doesn't build to anything. At the great "reveal" at the end the music is totally inappropriate for what is happening on the screen and the whole sequence is just paced funny.
Most meh movie I have seen in a long time.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 3D (3D Bluray): Like this movie a little more every time I watch it. Especially in 3D it's a visual feast and the story is good enough. Dunno, I like it.

Altered Carbon - Entire Series (Download): Binged it this weekend. Pretty good. Blade Runner-looks with a very anime type plot, not to dissimilar of things that were touched upon in GOTS (the series). I loved it and I'd buy it if it ever comes out on bluray. That being said, I do think they could have trimmed it down a little. 9 episodes instead of 10 for example because it got stretched a little thin towards the end. People complain about the runtime of Blade Runner 2049 but 9+ hours is a lot longer still.
Roger Corman's Death Race 2050 (Bluray): 'Modern' remake of the classic but in the same low-budget style and look of the original. It was actually pretty fun and funny but obviously it didn't come close to the original, which is 'lighning in a bottle cult-classic stuff'. This won't be, but it wasn't bad for what it set out to be. All the cars were obviously constructed on a VW beetle chassis though and nowere looked as neat as the original ones did.
Hidden (Download): Not 'the Hidden' but a more recent movie about a family (mom, dad, daughter) hiding in a shelter with something unknown stalking them outside. Remains interesting up to the very end, with some surprising twists. Only found out during the end credits it was directed by the Duffer brothers, of Stranger Things fame.

Doctor Strange 3D (3D Bluray): Don't think I'd already watched it since I bought it on bluray. I think I showed the 2D disc to the kids but 3D I don't think I'd played yet. I'd downloaded and watched a 3D version shortly before buying this, which might explain it. But since I'm in the process of getting up early when nobody's home so I can watch a movie with the surrounds instead of headphones, this seemed like a good movie to watch this way. No better movie to showcase 3D either even though it is but a conversion. The funky visuals are a treat and make the movie really stand out, even in the colourful Marvel universe...

The Cloverfield Paradox (Download): Not gonna lie, wanted to watch it because of the cloverfield title/connection (so yey for the marketing team), but even without it I would eventually have seen it because it's something that's in my interest sphere. Starts off promising but loses momentum as it goes on and once everything has become clear I started losing interest as well. There are better interdimensional movies out there. This is no Event Horizon. It has neat ideas but ultimately it doesn't stand out enough. Seems like the more interesting stuff was happening on Earth and not so much in space on the ship.

Spectre (Bluray): Put off watching it for a long time because of all the lukewarm response but I can't say I didn't like it.
Mom & Dad (Download): Fun little horror flick about parents wanting to kill their children, directed by one of the Crank guys and starring Nic Cage.
Street Fighter - Assassin's Fist (Bluray): Stumbled upon it by accident almost, didn't even know people were still trying to make Streetfighter movies, but I guess they are. Technically though it is a miniseries, 2 hours and 30 minutes long, focusing just on Ryu and Ken's training, with flashbacks of their master and his brother, mirroring the Ken and Ryu relationship. The response to this on the IMDB page was overwhelmingly positive, which made me interested in checking it out and I can say they were right. Not even that much happens but it was very good nonetheless. Don't know if it ever got a follow-up because it ends on somewhat of a big cliffhanger, but even standing on its own, it holds up.

ESPN 30 for 30 - Hillsborough: Someone mentioned this documentary on reddit so I watched it. I know nothing about soccer at all and had only heard about the Hillsborough Disaster a few times. Really fucked up documentary. Then of course the cops went into cover your ass mode and tried to blame the fans when the entire stadium was a death trap. Just recently in 2017 people have finally been charged with crimes even tho it happened in 1989.

Forgot to include one in the previous post:
Deadpool (Bluray): Watched it with the kids, they seemed to appreciate the humor as well.
And the wife and I went on a citytrip (for valentine's I guess), while we were there we went and saw:
The Shape of Water (Theatre): Think I liked it more than the wife though even though I kinda chose it for her. My reasoning was: it'll be somewhat of a romantic movie (and a big contender for the oscars) so it should be more for her, but I'll have seen a Del Toro movie so there's a good chance there will be something in there for me as well. I liked it. Del Toro has a good track record for adult fairy tales.
Back home, laying on the couch, exhausted from a weekend out of my usual night rhythm, I watched:
Bad Words (TV): It wasn't anything special but I can't say it didn't do what it was supposed to do and even though I'd expected to fall asleep, it kept me awake.

I figured the best way of getting through a backlog of recent (and not so recent anymore) blurays was by watching none of those, lol...
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (Bluray): Thought it best to watch the classic before showing them the new one. Since the second is the best by far, I thought just that one would do just fine to introduce the character. Think it was a bit too old for them, they didn't really respond to it like I hoped they would but at least now it's out of the way and they have seen another cult classic.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Download): Heh, kinda liked this one. Like the director, like his style and his dialogues. Acting by all was top notch, got more emotional than I think it would. Not sure about the message or the characters motivations though, but hey, it's a movie, I was entertained and nothing of it is real, so...
Kairo/Pulse (DVD/Download): Watched this J-Horror several times on DVD back in the day. Didn't really get what was going on back then, still don't really, but it has heaps of atmosphere which sometimes is enough. Can't say the HD-rip was that big of a step up (I guess the source material is only so-so as well), but I'm not even sure my DVD would still work. It's one of those Hong Kong ones. They already started failing back in the day so the chances of this still working aren't great...
The Guardians (Download): Downloaded this Russian superhero flick way back when it first came out but it had just awful subtitles and it took a really long time for decent ones to show up. Too long because by that time I had lost interest completely. Until last night. Has a reputation of not being very good but it was kinda fun. I liked the FX but the story was pretty straightforward and rushed. Meh, might get it when it's really cheap.

Ouija: Origin of Evil (Bluray): Even though it was supposed to be better than the first, I just couldn't get myself to watch it so soon after watching the first because that first one was so disappointing and it created a bad expectation. I'm glad I was completely wrong though. This one was actually really good. Good atmosphere, well used jump scares that aren't overdone and genuinly creepy visuals. Surprisingly effective. Looks like they wanted to emulate 70's flicks, cigarette burns and all. Good job.
Lethal Weapon 4 (Bluray): Got a boxset of the lot of them a while ago but I've seen the first 2 ones too often and too recently so I figured I'd start at the back and work my way to the first eventually. I thought the last one wasn't as good as it turned out to be. I mean, it wasn't great but it was very amusing and entertaining even if it was quite a bit over the top and very, very noisy and busy...
The Other Guys (TV): Had seen it before but couldn't remember a single thing about it, like literally nothing. Couldn't even remember if I liked it or not. Anyway, watched it, laughed a few times. It was reasonably funny for the most part but the first half is definately the stronger one. Kinda nodded off towards the end but don't feel like I missed a lot.

Black Panther (Theatre): Meh, wasn't that impressed to be honest. Plotwise it was fine, I guess, didn't really care but I got what they were trying to say, but visually it was just so fucking ugly: cinematography but especially all the designs of the technology and a lot of CGI that was really apparent and looked incredibly cheap for a big budget Marvel/Disney flick. Give the hero an actual suit, not a CGI costume, hasn't Green Lantern taught you anything? (His costume in Civil War was so much cooler) Fight scene at the end, both the mass fight as well as the hero/villain standoff was incredibly bad visually (those rhinos, ugh, and that fight on the vibranium-train tracks, none of it convinced me). I'll end up buying it (in 3D) and watching it again but for me this was the weakest of the Marvel cinematic universe so far... ...and no, it's not because they're black, I don't care what colour anyone is, an ugly and uninteresting movie is an ugly and uninteresting movie.

Logan (Bluray): Long overdue rewatch (took a long time for this movie to come down in price it seems). I think I enjoyed it more than I did the first time around. Father/son dynamic with an old and cranky Xavier and an old and cranky Wolverine is still the best part of the movie but I didn't mind the finale as much as I did the first time around. One question though: can you kill Wolverine by destroying his brain then? I mean, that's how they took out his clone, right? The adamantium bullet is only needed to penetrate the adamantium that's covering his skull, I'm guessing, and then tissue damage to the brain does the rest? Yes? No?
The Disaster Artist (Download): Lol and a half. Never saw the Room, just the infamous scenes but that didn't stop me from enjoying this. Seems like the guys that made it were having a lot of fun as well, especially James Franco as Tommy Wiseau.
Lethal Weapon 3 (Bluray): More of the same craziness. Better than 4 but not as good as 2.
Street Fighter: Resurrection (Download): Same Ken and Ryu as Assassin's Fist, same director but that's about it. Supposed to be a follow-up though. The story picks up from somewhere, but it sure as hell isn't Assassin's Fist. Maybe one of the games, who knows, I don't and I don't want to now because compared to Assassin's Fist, this is so weak. It's only 4 webisodes, totaling some 30 minutes, introduces some characters I never even heard of and it's all about this weapon's deal with another character I never heard of. Ken & Ryu in their costumes work in the setting of Assassin's Fist, in the real world, they're silly, the action was bland and too shoot-y for a series based on a fighting game and it just wasn't interesting. Shame.

Annihilation(Non-IMAX): Black Panther is taking up all the IMAX in town. Saw this on the small screen. The previews made it look like STALKER the movie and it has a similar premise. Walking into the Zone errrrr "AREA X". I liked it. If you are the kinda person who smokes weed or does mushrooms I would recommend it as there as some trippy visuals. There is a plot element I recognized from SCP Foundation Creepypasta but I am sure SCP prolly ripped it off from somewhere else in turn. My thoughts on the plot: {CLICK FOR SPOILER}I am pretty sure the whole movie is a metaphor for mental health problems. They harp over and over again on how emotionally damaged the people going into Area X are. They seem really spaced out coming out of Area X so I am going to assume this a metaphor for spending a long time inside a mental hospital? Dunno, they beat you over the head with how mentally messed up everyone is tho.

Yeah I wanna check out Annihilation, seems interesting.
There's a Russian movie from 1979 also called Stalker that influenced the game somewhat, deals with some anomolous area that is off limits. It's worth watching.

Mute (Download): I'm glad Duncan Jones went back to scifi after that stupid Warcraft movie. Even though this wasn't the best movie ever, very confusing at first, we don't spend enough time with the characters before shit starts happening so it's hard to care for them, but I liked the look (very Blade Runner) and the fact it was set in the same universe as Moon. All in all I liked it quite a bit but it needs to grow on you because the beginning is so quick and dirty with the character introductions...
Your Name (Download): Got excited when this came out, the most grossing anime movie ever, downloaded it, then lost interest a bit when I found out more about it, mostly the fact it was directed by the guy from 5 Centimeters per Second, which was slow, boring and pretentiously poetic and scrolling through this made it seem like more of that. How wrong I thankfully was. I don't know how these Japanese keep pulling it off, but it was fucking amazing again. Characters you really care about, both amusing and very emotional and all this hinging on a plot idea that's quite silly really, but it works. Reminded me a lot of The Girl that Leapt through Time for the silly idea that carries the movie and a bit of Summer Wars for the Japanese traditions, other ones I really love. I can't but recommend it to everyone.
Hellbenders 3D (3D Bluray): Pointless in 3D, don't know if it was made this way or it was another German post-processing job (they seem to do that a lot down there). Anyway, disregarding the 3D, it a bit of an exorcism comedy that isn't scary enough for a horror flick or funny enough for a comedy. It was watchable and some of it was even amusing but I don't think I'd be in a hurry to buy it if I'd just downloaded it.

Ant-Man 3D (3D Bluray): Had hoped to be watching Guardians of the Galaxy 2 today but while the rest of my order did arrive, that one didn't seem to have made it at the same time, so I settled for Ant-Man as a back-up. Had been wanting to rewatch that one anyway so there were no more excuses left. It's a fun movie but I don't understand why being able to shrink a human is that important to them. They can shrink everything else already, surely that has a huge advantage in warfare. Think of transportation. Planes, tanks, guns and ammo, all miniaturized, costing next to nothing to get across the globe, or to put them in position steathily, then make them big again. Strange nobody seems interested in that unless there's also tiny people...
