Fargo - Season 2 (Bluray): Binged it this weekend and liked it a lot, more than I did the first time probably because it's been a while since I've seen the first season and last time I watched them more closely together so I couldn't help but compare. They're very different and I'm probably more fond of the tone of the first season, but rewatching the second cleanly, I learned to appreciate it for what it is. And what it is is great. Still haven't seen the 3rd yet but there's a good chance I'll acquire that for next weekend. I've still got to watch that, I've only seen the first few episodes. Excellent cast. Michael Hogan from BSG, and Jeffrey Donovan*, the star of Burn Notice are just two that come to mind. The homicidal wife is a famous actress, but her name escapes me. Fake edit, I had to look, Kirsten Dunst, and Ted Danson, and Kieran Culkin, and the guy from Breaking Bad who shot the kid. *He's now in a Hulu exclusive show that is addictive, Shut Eye. Second season just started. www.imdb.com/title/tt5520392/referenceen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_Eye

Just watched the finale of Vice Principals, dark comedy on HBO starring Danny McBride and Walton Goggins. It had some moments that made me laugh out loud, not a bad show overall and worth watching IMO. It's only 2 seasons long with 9 episodes for each season.

Thor: Ragnarok (Theatre): Finally got around to it, about time. Almost thought I might have to skip it but I'm really glad I didn't. Hilarious romp. I guess after 2 straight Thor movies that felt a bit forced, the time was right to turn it somewhat ridiculous and it worked wonderfully. Guardians showed the way and Thor follows them down that road. Can't wait to rewatch it in 3D. Noticed several moments that would look wonderful in 3D so looking forward to that.

I really enjoyed Thor 3, a very fun and entertaining movie all the way.
I like the part where that guy (Skurge/Executioner) is showing off those M16 rifles, saying how he got em from "Tecks-ahs."

Justice League 3D (Theatre): Took me a bit to get into it to be honest. The new characters get introduced very quickly with the minimum amount of backstory, which is a big contrast with the Marvel movies in which most characters have gotten a solo movie before becoming part of the team. This part felt very rushed and disjointed but the movie pulled me in with the team's first big action sequence. From then on there's focus in the story and the characters can just do what they're supposed to. I can see the critics having a field day with this one once again, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Joss Whedon tweaking the script certainly helped the overall demeanor and the moments of levity (Flash being the comedy sidekick) were much appreciated.
Overall I don't think the critics (or the general public) is going to like it as much as their Marvel counterparts, but I certainly enjoyed it.

Blade of the Immortal (Download): Takashi Miike's latest movie is a bloody samurai romp reminiscent of Ninja Scroll in which an immortal swordman has to battle waves and waves of opponents, some with certain abilities of their own. I liked it a lot but it could have done with some trimming because 2 hours and 20 minutes is a long time to see people get chopped to bits.
•Rec 3: Genesis (Bluray): While it might be a weaker episode in the Rec series, it's still above average for zombie movies. Tonight part 4, which I only saw the once and don't remember at all, never a great sign.
The Bad Batch (Download): Weird one. Basically Escape from New York in the desert without the escaping. Starts interestingly enough but stops completely dead about halfway through never to really pick up again. It's filled with stuff I should like but it's so incredibly slow and at least 30 minutes too long to keep what little content there is interesting.

De Helaasheid der Dingen (Bluray): Flemish flick that's probably in my top 5 of best ever Belgian movies. A writer retells his childhood when he lived with his father and his 3 brothers that all moved back in with their mother after their respective lives collapsed due to alcohol abuse and money troubles because of their anti-social lifestyles. It's funny because it isn't me having to live that life...
Dead or Alive (Bluray): Takashi Miike's orgy of violence on bluray? Yes, and both the sequels too, in a boxset, released by Arrow Video. Not quite HD quality but probably the best the source material would allow. It's just great to see again after all these years because it's been a while. Where else would you get to see a hooker get drowned in an inflatable pool filled with her own excrements from excessive enemas?
•Rec 4: Apocalypse (Bluray): Pretty standard zombie fodder in this 4th installment. Seems like they completely did away with the religious angle and went for the parasite-angle instead.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets 3D (3D Download): Wasn't too impressed when I saw it in the theatre but I have to say, maybe because of adjusted expectations, I liked it a lot more this time around. Had planned on buying it anyway but now I might not even wait for the price to go down as much. Looks amazing, in 3D especially, and a lot of the stuff that annoyed me at first didn't annoy me as much anymore, like the bad choice of actors for the leads. They were OK, the girl is really pretty btw. Rihanna however, I still could've done without.

I watched Rec2 the other night after picking it up for £1 new on BR - I was enjoying it well enough (and thought the religious angle interesting) but then it cut to those annoying kids who sneak in, I lost interest pretty quick and drifted off. I've seen that Arrow DoA box, just waiting until I see the price drop a little, same with the Lone Wolf & Cub set... www.blu-ray.com/movies/Lone-Wolf-and-Cub-Blu-ray/156430/

That's not a bad price at all, I've only seen it for £29.99 which is just a little too much for me. Saying that I just spent a penny more for other BRs on my way home from work tonight, but that includes four films I've never seen before and the one I have seen i haven't in HD + its an Arrow release with all new documentaries/interviews etc...

I watched Split last night and really enjoyed it a lot. I'd only found out that it was a sequel to Unbreakable (which I fucking love) about a week ago... it could have stood as its own film but the fact there's going to be a third (Glass) is great as I remember MNS saying Unbreakable was the first of a trilogy and then wondering for ages when the next was coming.
I'm really interested in finding out the link between Glass/The Horde - Split would seem to suggest the train crash that awakened David Dunn killed Crumb's father but it could be that Glass triggered The Horde simply by reaching out (a la Hannibal Lecter) telling him about Dunn.
Either way, it would seem that Glass managed to manifest both the worlds first superhero AND supervillain which is ace.
If I was an actor and I ever needed to cry I would just think about Sam Jacksons "Because of the kids" speech from the end of Unbreakable... Fucking Niagra Falls.

Future Man - Season 1 (Download): Hilarious time travel/last starfighter-esque show about a guy that gets visitors from the future after beating a computer game. They're part of an underground resistance and need to kill someone in the past to clean up their present. First episode is directed by Evan Goldberg/Seth Rogen, so you know what kind of humor to expect. I liked it a lot, right up my alley. Makes fun of time travel clichés a lot.
The Punisher - Season 1 (Download): Binged this this weekend. Very good, up there with the best of the Marvel series on Netflix. Frank Castle is the ultimate badass and the story is interesting enough to carry a 13-episode arc. But like most of those series, they don't seem to want to put characters in their costumes. He's in his Punisher gear for 5 minutes at the start of the first episode and then it isn't seen again until episode 10 (for an ultraviolent scene and probably the highlight of the season). Apart from that, strong series that feels like it's part of the universe of the other series, without having to re-cycle any of those storylines or characters.

The Orville - Season 1 (Download): Not quite for me. I'm not big enough of a classic Trek fan to really appreciate this. I enjoyed the humor and some of the episodes had cool ideas behind them but on the whole it didn't quite come together for me. Still easier to sit through than recent Walking Dead episodes though.
edit: Doh! Thought I'd already seen all of them but apparently season 1 is still ongoing. Whoops.
Search Party - Season 1 (Download): Now this I watched very quickly, easy because it only was 10 20-minute episodes, but also because it was funny and mysterious enough to grab my attention from the start. Selfish douchebag hipsters start looking for a girl they went to college with that has disappeared and get into all sorts of situations.

The Greasy Strangler
What a truly lovely film; Michael St. Michaels is awesome, I wish he was my Dad.
I know I've enjoyed a film when I'm prepared to watch it over again right away with the commentary on - this is pretty funny so far.
Re. The Orville - I really like classic Trek but am sick enough of MacFarlane not to bother. The cheesy-bumfaced crooning cunt.

Kingsman: The Secret Service (Bluray): Perfect! Seen it a few times before but still massively enjoyed it. It's entertaining and funny and the action is just enough over-the-top to still be believable. The church scene is amazing and the choreography of the exploding heads is brilliant. In short, perfect little spy movie, loads of fun and excitement.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Download): 5 minutes in I already knew this wasn't going to be up to the same standard as the original. A little over-the-top becomes waaay over-the-top in a hurry. Everything is just too exaggerated to the point it becomes a little annoying, especially compared to the original, which did manage to walk that fine line. Oh, I enjoyed myself, but it's nowhere near the level of the first. It's Transformers 2 after Transformers 1. Everything turned up to 11, where a 10 would've been better.
I'm Not a Serial Killer (Bluray): Great little horror flick that you need to discover for yourself.
Helldriver (Bluray): Probably the most insane movie ever made. Relentless Japanese splatter that doesn't slow down for even a minute. Charming practical gore combined with cheap and awful CG, completely over-the-top (it can't even see the top anymore, that's how far it's over it). If you ever want to see a huge pile of zombies, shaped like a person, grab 2 cruise missiles out of the sky and then turn into a plane, using the missiles as engines, this is the movie for you.

Strange Days (Bluray): Holds up very well. Can't think of anything else to say really. Good movie.
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (Bluray): Debut movie of the woman that also did 'The Bad Batch' (see a few weeks ago). Got some critical praise, which made me wary, but I bought it as part of a deal and there wasn't anything else I'd rather have. Expected it to be some slow arty-farty wank and yeah, that's pretty much what this black and white Persian vampire movie turned out to be. Not for me, thanks.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (Bluray): Had almost forgotten how hilarious this movie is. I was laughing out loud throughout. So many great lines and/or deliveries of lines. Apparently this was also an extended cut, featuring scenes I hadn't even seen before. LOUD NOISES!

The Host (Bluray): Surprisingly even in HD, the CGI creature holds up pretty well (except for the fire at the end, but then that didn't even look convincing on DVD). Anyway, The Host is still the best Korean monster movie and even one of the better ones worldwide. That opening remains one of the best monster reveals to date...
Dead or Alive 2: Birds (Bluray): The black sheep of the trilogy. The ultraviolence is toned down and the core of the movie is about friendship, so no hookers being drowned in their own shit here, which is a shame because I'm a bigger fan of that, lol. Still, solid movie, just not as good as the other 2 in the trilogy...
Hostel III (Bluray): Another black sheep of the trilogy. Bought a boxset of the trilogy but because I'd downloaded and seen the other 2 fairly recently, I decided for now to just watch the 3rd one, which I'd never seen before because I'd heard it wasn't very good. No Eli Roth in this installment either but rather Scott Spiegel who's known for being close to Sam Raimi and not much else, certainly not directing. In any case, yeah, the movie is only mediocre at best but I have to say I liked the reversal of the plot and the story had a few interesting twists (not the ending though, that was just inexplicable shit) but it lacked the atmosphere the first 2 managed to capture so well. And for a torture porn, the torture was lacking in intensity as well as quantity. In short: not as bad as expected but not really worthy of the name either...

X-Men 2 (TV): Have it on bluray, obviously, but that doesn't have Dutch subtitles and I really wanted to show it to the kids so I recorded it when it was on a while back. I want to make them watch a few more X-Men flicks so I can show them Deadpool eventually, which is what I'm working towards.
Cars 3 3D (3D Download): Took me a while to get into it to be honest. Being a little knowledgable of Nascar, the new contenders somewhat annoyed me. Their driving aids and aerodynamical package which supposedly made them better than McQueen would never be allowed there. I also had a completely different expectation from seeing a teaser way back. I figured the new rival would be electrically powered, which is something very current and I thought could be the base for the story but it was something completely different. Once I came to terms with all that, I started to enjoy it for what it was. Enjoyable but very predictable as well. Looked amazing in 3D though.
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (Bluray): Maybe not as good as the first, but I still laughed a bunch. Afterwards, instead of watching another movie, I watched all the extras, which were just as funny as the movie. The gag reel especially was pretty hilarious.

Search Party - Season 2 (Download): Picks up where season 1 left off, so, without trying to spoil, it's pretty dark and continues to be dark as the various characters try to come to terms with what has happened while still being massive egotistical douchebags. Bring on season 3, I say...

Lost Highway (Bluray): Better not tailgate mister Eddie, he doesn't seem to appreciate it...
Dunkirk (Download): Meh. Liked some parts but can't say I was 'on board' (hihoo) for the entire thing. Started to get more into it as the movie went on but it was very jarring to start, with music that didn't seem to fit and obvious '70s architecture on the shoreline. What the hell? Surely I can't be the only one to notice that? I for one could've done without all the time-jumping as well. Seems to me like a movie like this would benefit from a more traditional structure and not so much a Pulp Fiction-style narrative. One last point of criticism: please, stop it with all the aspect ratio changes. It's annoying as all hell on TV. It might work in an Imax theatre, but at home it's just annoying, especially when sometimes, it's literally only for a few seconds. Please, pick a format. It's always been annoying, on every movie, like the Batmans and Tron Legacy but it's starting to get even more ridiculous it seems to the point where it's actively distracting. Didn't like the movie that much, but I might've bought it to give it another go, but now that I know it has all those aspect changes, I don't think I'm going to.
Dead or Alive 3: Final (Bluray): Ouch! Came with a warning up front, saying they did the best they could with the source material, but seeing how the source material was only an SD NTSC master tape (the original format it was shot on btw), you know you're not going to get great quality material. It used to look alright, back in the day, on the equipment of the day, so DVD on a CRT, but this shit wasn't made to last. So this and 28 Days later are now 2 blurays I have I could've just seen on DVD/CRT and they would've looked better.

Skyline (Bluray): Low-budget alien invasion movie with some above average FX that wasn't great but I always appreciated for what it was. It ended on a real high with an interesting idea for a sequel that didn't happen... ...until now:
Beyond Skyline (Download): After all these years it finally was made and it kind of picks up where the other left off. We're introduced to a new group of survivors that experiences the events of the first movie in quick succession and ends up in the ship in like the first 15 minutes. There they run into the female survivor from the first (played by a different actress, not that it matters, she doesn't last long) and the converted alien monster and learn some important stuff about the aliens, which they need after the ship goes down in Indonesia and they combine forces with some drug runners (the guys from The Raid). It's complete schlock, but I loved it. Unapologetic B-movie with people using martial arts against all kinds of guys in suits and straight-up monster fights.

Star Wars - Episode VIII - The Last Jedi 3D (theatre): I liked it and in spite of what I read, I had no problems with the 3D. It always works great during space scenes and there were a lot of those here. Rogue One did 3D worse. Might go and see it again with the kids (in 2D, not paying extra for them, lol).

District 9 (Bluray/Download): Have it on bluray, obviously, but because I wanted to watch it with the kid(s), I had to have Dutch subtitles, which neither the bluray nor DVD had. Such a great movie with good special FX and a real showcase for Sharlto Copley, who, I'm pretty sure has this movie to thank for his Hollywood career...
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency - Season 1 (Download): In preparation for season 2, I wanted to rewatch season 1 and since I couldn't find a version I could purchase anywhere (Belgium/Holland, Germany or UK), I had to redownload it. Looks like it hasn't even made it onto a disc yet over here at all. Why don't they make sure you can actually buy it, especially with a second season in progress? Anyway, great series with a lot of weirdness, humor and some time travel, all up my alley.
