Blade Runner 2049 3D (Theatre): Cool. Really liked the movie. Slow scifi detective story with amazing looking designs and great music. 3D maybe wasn't really needed for the most part, but it did enhance a few scenes to great effect. Can't wait to watch it again in the comfort of my home.
Oats Studios: Firebase (Download): Man, I love this. 3rd time I've seen it and it's still a chilling piece of scifi/horror/mystery. Of all the shorts, this is the one I'd want to see expanded on the most...

Oats Studios: Firebase (Steam bought download): €5, what the hell, figured I'd chip in seeing I love it as much as I do. 7GB for 25 minutes of video, I'd say the quality is pretty good...

Blade Runner - Final Cut (Bluray): To be honest, I can't wait to see 2049 again, would've loved to have this followed-up by the new one. Oh well, guess I'll do that in 6 months or so.
I Am Legend - Alternate Cut (Bluray): For the first time since seeing it in the theatre, I also rewatched the theatrical ending. Ugh, that's such bullshit compared to the 'alternate' (or, if you ask me: original) ending. Do yourself a favour, never watch the theatrical, always go for the alternate.
The Monster (Bluray): Cunty teen mom party cunt takes her neglected cunty daughter cross-country to live with her dad when they have an accident on a small road in the woods and there's a monster stalking them. Saw some behind-the-scenes footage afterwards. Amazing they managed to cut a halfway decent film out of that, lol, OMG, that looked so cheap...
War of the Worlds: Goliath 3D (3D Bluray): Steampunk animated WotW version set in 1914 that, despite being 2D animation, looks pretty neat in 3D. Story is simple but does the job, I guess, visuals are pretty neat.

Syrup (Download): Remember way back on the SCMB when we were all playing that webgame Nationstates based on that book Jennifer Government by Max Barry? Well, I bought that book and liked it too and thus I bought that author's previous book as well, called 'Syrup' about advertising and marketing. It read like a movie and yesterday, completely by accident, I found out someone did make it into a movie, in 2013, and yet, me, a movie guy hadn't heard anything about it... ...which usually isn't a great omen... ...and it wasn't. I could see the story from the book, for the most part, but the characters just didn't work very well. In short: the book was better.
Red State (Bluray): RIP Michael Parks.
Bølgen (the Wave) (TV): Norwegian disaster movie about a tsunami in a fjord after part of a montain collapses. First half was really good and suspenseful but second half couldn't escape the tsunami of clichés of the disaster movie genre.
Clerks 2 (DVD/Download): Porch Monkey 4 Life!

Ash vs Evil Dead - Season 1 (Bluray): Managed to snag it for a very good price (€15) in a 2 for €30 deal together with the second season of Fargo. Original price would've been €70 for the pair. Such a fun series, probably no other series has ever used as much fake blood in a single season, lol. "You say one more dumb thing..." "I'm gonna say a lotta dumb things!" On to season 2...
No Country for Old Men (Bluray): Still an amazing fucking movie. "Look at that fucking bone" gets me every time, lol.
War for the Planet of the Apes 3D (Download): If the series stops here, it will have been a pretty sweet prequel trilogy. Every movie was great and this one is no exception. The ape characters are just amazing, they portray so many emotions while barely uttering a sound. I was surprised the movie worked as well in 3D as it did as well. It isn't necessary but I was glad to see they still treated it with a lot of care and even created set pieces especially for it. Guess I'll have to fork out the extra cash for the 3D version then, eventually, when it's cheap enough...

@ No Country For Old Men, I liked how things would jump ahead and leave it ambiguous as to what happened. I think my favorite part was when the bad guy's telling that farmer to take the chicken crates off the back of that truck, then it just skips to the bad guy spraying off all the chicken crap and feathers with a pressure hose at the carwash.

Yeah, it's nice to see a (popular) movie that doesn't just cater to the lowest common denominator and overexplains its every move.
Mad Max: Fury Road 3D (3D Bluray): So much fun, looking so amazing. Goes to show not every director loses it in his old age (I'm looking at you Ridley Scott).
Ash vs Evil Dead - Season 2 (Download): This show is probably the most insane thing that's ever been on television. Preacher has its moments, but this show is just balls-to-the-wall insanity every single episode.

•Rec (Bluray): Only had the 3rd on bluray until now, managed to complete the set for not too much money. Classic found footage zombie shenanigans that holds up pretty well.
McLaren (Download): Documentary about Bruce McLaren, the kiwi that started making and racing his own cars and sadly died before he could see what his name would eventually mean in automotive history. Already bought it on DVD for my dad's birthday later this month. I'll probably get it on bluray eventually as well.

Stranger Things 2 premiered on Friday. Good so far, I'm up to episode 7 of 9 and this episode focuses entirely on Eleven. I was expecting more of the same, but they really went beyond what the first season established and it's also a lot darker. Still has that nostalgic 80's thing going on too.
Also that girl who plays Eleven really looks a lot like a young Carrie Fisher. If they ever do a Star Wars movie that includes a young Princess Leia, she'd be perfect.

Arrival (Bluray): Great fucking movie, very atmospheric soundscapes, good story well told.
Bayonetta: Bloody Fate (Bluray): Basically a condensed version of the plot of the game. Looks like they got the same (English) voice cast as they did for the game. It had a Japanese audio track as well but I stuck to English for that reason. It portrays the craziness of the game there's just less of it obviously. Several of the bosses and characters make an appearance.
Stranger Things - Season 1 (Download): Probably liked it more than I did the first time around. Looked around to buy the bluray set but seems like it isn't even available, at least not here, the UK or Germany...

Stranger Things - Season 2 (Download): Worthy successor to the first season with a satisfying conclusion. They left some stuff open for a 3rd season but nothing too important so if it does end, it ends on a good note.

The 6th Sense (DVD): Wanted to watch a scary movie with the kids but not too scary so they wouldn't be able to sleep but I don't think this was scary enough to really have an impact. At least they got to see it before it was spoiled for them, which is bound to happen someday.

Fanboys (Bluray): So many sex offenders in the credits. Produced by Kevin Spacey and published by the Weinstein Company, lol...
Midnight Special (Bluray): Heh, fishes in the same pond as Stranger Things. Wasn't as obvious the first time around but watching both so close together they are very alike.
The Blob (Bluray): One of my favorite '80s creature features. Holds us very well. Perfectly contructed, everything gets set up and pays off.
•Rec² (Bluray): The perfect sequel. Basically more of the same while diving deeper into the backstory.

Wind River (Download): Stupid title and bad poster make it look like some poor man's thriller but knowing it was by the guy that wrote Hell or High Water and Sicario, I decided to give it a chance. It's about this native American girl that winds up dead halfway up a mountain on some snowy Indian reservation. Pretty decent but not as good as either of the other movies mentioned here.
The Ninth Gate (Bluray): Not bad, for a pedophile.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter 3D (Download): Let's hope so, cuz damn, what a mess this was. You can't say they didn't try though, there's not a minute of calm in the entire movie. It's constant action from beginning to end, but it's all so messily filmed and edited. FX look great and so does the 3D, but there's no characterisation whatsoever and what little there is of a story still feels convoluted and silly. Wasn't expecting it to be good or anything so I can't say I'm disappointed but I am amazed it still looks as expensive and big as it does.
Murder Party (DVD): Should've watched it on Halloween. I wonder how many people only discovered this little gem after Blue Ruin and Green Room and went looking for more of the same guy. I bought this years ago, completely blind, because it was cheap and had some good reviews on the store's page. What a discovery that turned out to be.

The Ninth Gate (Bluray): Not bad, for a pedophile. Frank Langella was working his mojo in that. When he did that thing with the gasoline ... wow. Depp's laid back character/performance really let everyone he acted with get their chance to shine.

I forgot to mention in replying to Cop, but you reminded me of it just now, the other day I opened a book and got a slight whiff of the mustiness a book can build up over time. That reminded me of the scene where Depp was talking to the collector who'd fallen on hard times but still took care of his remaining collection. He mentioned airing them out periodically. I guess having a fondness for books, and as a kid seeing them as holding magical truths, goes to being more likely to appreciate the theme of that film.

When he did that thing with the gasoline ... wow. He should've started off with something smaller until he was 100% certain it had worked. If you think you can fly, don't just jump off a building to prove it, try taking off from the ground first...

If you think you can fly, don't just jump off a building to prove it, try taking off from the ground first... IIRC he actually did. He did his arm first. Then he did a wild riff about the flames not burning. That might actually be significant. It goes to the theme of being lured to ones doom, or at least egged on. It was a final trick of the author, designed to take in the unwary, the overly bold. Depp was an observer, a "student of mankind" just like the girl on the train. His attitude saved him, or so the film shows. Though with that collapse of the wooden structure that pinned him near the end; I wonder if that was his character getting some help, and his benefactor wanted him to observe and learn. Are we like Depp, pinned to our seats by the director, and compelled to observe and learn?

Ok, fair enough, he did do his arm first. Still, he should've quit while he was ahead, lol, instead of going for the full burning man shtick... As for learning from the director, I guess we all wanna know how we can pork a 13y old girl and get away with it for as long as he did...

As for learning from the director, I guess we all wanna know how we can pork a 13y old girl and get away with it for as long as he did... Not so much learn from the director (though I see I did use that word), even though he might be striving to serve as a guide, as hear his candid take on how he sees life. You're his captive audience. In the movie Langella thought Depp was his captive audience, but arguably Depp was being played to by the girl from the train. And of course there's us, the movie's audience, at a further remove. Polanski, in interviews, would brush aside mentions of his rape case. "Oh that ..." he would say dismissively. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nastassja_Kinski#Personal_life I think it safe to say he has a certain view on life, and this movie gives us suggestions of what it is. people.com/archive/after-tess-and-roman-polanski-nastassia-kinski-trades-notoriety-for-l-a-propriety-vol-15-no-14/I think that's counter to the whole deal of being a Satanist. "No thank you, that's enough orgy for me tonight, I've got a big day at work tomorrow." lol Though Langella's character was no cardboard cut out of a Satanist, and he did mock those of them who went into it for the cheap spectacle and thrills. He was after pure power. Langella made a meal out of the role. He was a very good Dracula as well. www.rogerebert.com/reviews/draculaGrrr, now I want to see it again!

Fargo - Season 2 (Bluray): Binged it this weekend and liked it a lot, more than I did the first time probably because it's been a while since I've seen the first season and last time I watched them more closely together so I couldn't help but compare. They're very different and I'm probably more fond of the tone of the first season, but rewatching the second cleanly, I learned to appreciate it for what it is. And what it is is great. Still haven't seen the 3rd yet but there's a good chance I'll acquire that for next weekend.
Nocturnal Animals (Bluray): Stylish and very good. Gyllenhaal and Shannon are probably the 2 best actors working right now, they never disappoint.
Radius (Download): Interesting idea but execution left somewhat to be desired. Guy wakes up without memory and quickly realises anyone that comes within a certain distance of him mysteriously dies. After 15 minutes this idea seems to run out of steam when a new character is introduced. Up and downs for the next hour (memory loss is a tricky plot device) but the final twist in the story was pretty good and unexpected and made the rest worthwhile. Interesting but flawed.
