A decade or 2 from now when I start getting old, I'll probably start considering an ebike but this one looks amazing: There is a raffle for a $10,000 Trek Ebike that I threw down $10. Looks amazing. Today I went to the backside of one of my favorite parks, went on a nice 3 hour ride. There are leaves everywhere, at one point I was kinda going into autopilot and daydreaming and my tire slammed hard into a rock, I almost wrecked and my bike fishtailed hard. Managed to right myself but I was very close to wrecking hard.

^Hope you win.
A lot of times on those more expensive bikes, it's wireless stuff like the derailleur and dropper post that drives up the price. I'd consider putting a wireless derailleur on my bike.
Also thought this was interesting, this pretty well-known mountain biker on Youtube called it quits:
It's a pretty long video but he pretty much said he just doesn't get enjoyment from it anymore.
I don't think that could happen to me, I enjoy biking a lot and it's a big part of my life.

Been going pretty regularly since this weekend, hadn't been in a few months at least. When I went on Saturday (Christmas Eve) it was below freezing but I bundled up good, bought some pretty nice winter biking clothes recently and also some for just autumn. Something weird happened after my ride today, I noticed the tips of my fingers had blue spots on them. At first I thought maybe the inside of my gloves had caused it, but I tried rubbing it off with alcohol and it wouldn't come off. Looked it up and it pointed to Raynaud's phenomenon (basically means bloodflow got cut off which resulted in low oxygen in the fingertips), some people just have reactions like that to the cold and it said it would return to normal after a while which it did. Was only in the 40's today but it still felt pretty cold with the wind chill. Probably gonna mention it to my doctor but it's also possible that it was caused by riding pretty rough terrain today, could've just put some stress on my fingers. I didn't notice if it happened on Saturday too.

I haven't been biking since early November. I dropped off my Fuel Ex 8 for a yearly cleaning, there are a couple of bolts on the suspension that need to be replaced. I have never bothered with the yearly tuning and only fix stuff when its broken so doing it different this time.
Also I used to replace my chain once a year but they say with as much as I go biking I should really be doing it 2-3 times a year.

Got my bike back today and since the winter storm passed and it got to the mid 40s I went riding, im a little out of shape compared to 2 months ago. Got some freezing wind at the end but it was a good ride.
The one thing I didn't have them do was maintenance on the suspension. I didn't think I needed it but I am second guessing myself now, maybe it needs a good cleaning.

My bikes both probably need maintenance, especially the old one. Last night I took the chains off and got them clean enough to eat off of, hung em up overnight to make sure they dry completely. Now I just need to lube em and put em back on, also deep cleaned the drivetrains on both bikes.

Got to the 50s today was really nice so I went on a 2 hour ride. Unfortunately all the parks are too muddy so the pavement it is. There is a huge hill right near my apartment one of my friends got to 55 mph on his road bike going down it

Very nearly took a nasty spill, was going down this steep thing and the tip of my shoe briefly caught a tree root on the way down. Somehow managed to stay in control without missing a beat, could've easily been an OTB accident.

I've had a few close calls for sure.
Friday I went down the huge hill near my apartment and saw two bikes at the red light. I rolled up on them and it was two of my friends from the local bike scene I haven't seen since October. I figured everyone would be out from the community cuz it got up to the 60s Friday. So glad I don't live in Alaska anymore on days like that.

I just got my bike back from the shop and I did the suspension service on the front and rear suspension. They replace like every ring and washer and such on the bike. They showed me the kits they use and it was a lot of stuff.
They told me they noticed the rear suspension seemed a little sluggish and damn they were right a lot more range now. Felt it right away.

Haven't been able to go biking much because my schedule sucks during the week, but next week I'm getting a new schedule and will have more time to go biking during the week. Most of the trails were closed this week anyway, it rained pretty heavy for a few days. That section I almost fell off of at this one local trail is actually closed now, because it was eroding too much and could give any day now if it hasn't already. People were unblocking it and riding it anyway, they're lucky they didn't collapse it and go down with it, there's not much holding it anymore. Probably a good 15-20 feet down and not much in the way to slow a fall.

I went on an amazing night ride a few days ago. It looked great and I was thinking "wow I really wish I had a GoPro right now" every single year I say "this is the year I get a GoPro" and I never do. Then I found out Bruce Willis has dementia and I realized every year could be my last biking. Got a new toy for the summer

I got the chest harness in today. I went and filmed some test footage and holy shit with the default settings the GoPro 11 Black looks fucking amazing. Turns out its 5k which is ridiculous. I still need to get it setup right and ready to film.
I couldn't open my test footage on my laptop at first. It would open in VLC and freeze the video but play the audio. Turns out I have been running VLC 32-bit this whole time. 5k footage is so ridiculous it requires the 64 bit version. Even manipulating the 5k footage in VideoPad Video editor takes forever to seek and such.
Following this guide. Can't wait for the summer

Haven't been able to bike lately cause I've been sick, another week or 2 I might be able to finally.
Got bit by a spider in my sleep and it got infected a day or 2 later, this huge bulge just appeared out of nowhere. Ended up having to go to the ER for it.

Damn, I remember all the crazy spiders and rattlesnakes to worry about in Arizona. Don't have to worry about that here.

This is my first test ride in 4k.
1st thing yes I need to get my damn camelbak hose out of frame. I will do that next time for sure that is my #1 priority. I picked higher color saturation I think it looks oversaturated personally.
I can't believe I noticed this but right at the 1:30 mark of the video in the upper right hand corner I glanced up and saw a kid on a bike fall over. I turned around and rolled by and just said "ride in a straight line and don't think about it" and rolled off lol.
Looking forward to the summer and filming my actual rides in the mountain bike trails.

I have an Osprey backpack with an internal reservoir with a hose like that, but it's a big pain to use. The hoses are very hard to take off in order to clean it, I stretched one of them out because of that. Might find a small Camelbak instead, the good thing about the Osprey is that it can hold a lot of stuff (snacks, tools, patches/tubes, first aid, etc) and it's great for very long rides. Normally I just take a 26oz water bottle with me on the bike and it's usually more than enough for my rides.

Normally I just take a 26oz water bottle with me on the bike and it's usually more than enough for my rides. I've been using the same Camelbak since I got my first "real" bike my Gary Fisher Wahoo! in 2005. I'm so used to the convenience I haven't used a water bottle since and I haven't had a water bottle mount on any of my bikes. I got the $80 Cambelbak at REI in 2005 on sale for $55 and it still is in perfect working condition, I have just replaced the hose/bladder every couple of years. Thats why I spring for more expensive biking gear at stores like REI vs the cheap crap at Walmart and Amazon. I have been meaning for years to get a bag for my bike and I finally got one yesterday. It is a Bontrager bag I got at the Trek store. The bag goes on the front of your handle bars and is kind of a pain to install but once you get it on it is stuck on there. Now I keep my keys/phone/spare headphones right in the bag and I don't have to stop and take them out of my Camelbak. It was $41 and I am aware I could get a much cheaper bag on Amazon or at Walmart but I don't trust cheap biking stuff. Some people have that mount for their phone right on the front of the bike but I haven't taken that step yet. I just don't trust my phone won't break in a bad wreck.

I figured out how to add the speedometer to footage. Sadly it glitched out on the stuff from yesterday but working on my first test ride. Next time I do that hill I need to go as fast as I can.

I rencoded this to 60 fps and changed up the music. Colors are more natural. The raw file is 18 gigs for 1080p60. Dunno how anyone could do 4k60 10 years ago
EDIT: Damn I just checked the quality zoomed in and wish I went for x265 not x264. Not very high quality in the road and such some swimming. Thats why its a test ride.

I've thought about getting a Gopro for my rides. Probably still will some time. I'm glad I finally got one. Some people swear by the insta360 which is $100 cheaper and has some really cool features. If you do get one I recommend the chest harness. I paid full price for the "official" GoPro chest harness vs the cheaper Amazon version. Also if you wear it upside down it tilts up instead of tilting down and if you film upside down the GoPro is smart enough that your raw footage is not upside down and has to be flipped 180. I was happy to see you could add the mph in post but its disappointing that for whatever reason that feature glitched out on my 2nd test ride. Maybe the sensor is really sensitive I dunno.

Riding through the wasteland, with Dogmeat running alongside, that's the ticket!

There's a nice concrete trail close to my house. If I ride it all the way to one end, there's a decent hill with a nice climb. I like to power up to the top, then turn around and ride fast back down. I rencoded this to 60 fps and changed up the music. Colors are more natural. The raw file is 18 gigs for 1080p60. I've often wished that game had a bicycle.

Holy fuck I feel really stupid. So VideoPad has been struggling and taking forever to seek and other stuff in my projects, very sluggish. A few times it has even failed outputting a video.
Then I did a ctrl+alt+delete and noticed it was running 32-bit. Wow. Too be fair it is kinda on the VideoPad people for still having a shitty 32-bit version in 2023.
I downloaded the 64-bit version and just like VLC it seeks right away and everything is very smooth. I didn't even think to check if it was 64-bit.

Riding through the wasteland, with Dogmeat running alongside, that's the ticket! Its the local observatory at the top of a huge hill you can ride in a huge loop down then back up again. Usually very popular with dog walkers and such but not on cold days. When its sunny and 90 out absolutely packed. Then again when its sunny and 90 out I am in the wood on the pavement.

So I redid the video using higher quality settings and the 64-bit version of VideoPad. It looks amazing on my PC. Sadly YouTube compression just ruins it. I think I need to look into hosting elsewhere like Google or something if I want it to look good, that or always shoot at 4k and hope for the best. I shot this 1080p60

Also the raw video for that was 27 gigs. I don't know how people with bad internet/slow PCs can deal with editing videos. I have 1 gig symmetrical Verizon FiOS I would lose my mind trying to do this with slow internet.

So last night I did the ride that inspired me to get a GoPro last week. I don't have the settings right for a night ride really, its almost freaking pitch black for a lot of the ride. I should have had my helmet and handlebar light at full but I had them at the lowest setting. Even at 4k its hard to make out details just because the video is so dark. Looks amazing in person.
