So this is interesting. My RAM got in yesterday. I loaded up the XMP profile in the BIOS and booted just fine.
Saw Windows was reporting all 32 gigs. Ran a couple benchmarks.
Then I noticed in Task Manager it was running at 2933 not 3200. I loaded up CPU-Z and this RAM is supposed to be CAS16 3200 1.35 volts. It is running CAS15 2933 1.2 volts.
I made sure XMP was enabled in the BIOS.
Went into the BIOS and manually entered all the timings and set the voltage to 1.35. Rebooted and running at 3200 just fine.
Ran 3dmark and halfway through got a BSOD with MEMORY_MANAGMENT as the error.
So I set it back to CAS15 2933.
So either the RAM can't do its timings or the motherboard in this laptop can't handle it. Not sure.
Either way its not a big deal. The difference between CAS16 3200 and CAS15 2933 is pretty minuscule and will only really show up in synthetics. At best it will probably be 5-8% in minimum FPS. I don't think its worth shipping it back to Amazon over that.
Also the motherboard will let me overvolt the shit out of it so I could set the RAM to 1.4+ volts and see if that makes it more stable but I don't think its worth dumping heat into the system.

I think memory speeds matter more with AMD Ryzen CPU's, at least that's how it seems.
Unfortunate about MSI's CEO. I had an MSI motherboard with 1155 socket, it was a good motherboard but had some weird quirks. I never overclocked it, yet sometimes it would never POST and then say that BIOS defaults were loaded because an overclock failed after 20 minutes of nothing on the screen. MSI seems to make some great products, maybe I just had bad luck with that motherboard.

I played some of Far Cry 5, it's not bad. I need to go back and try it on my new monitor.

I thought it was funny how the min FPS on my new laptop matches the max fps on my old one.
One issue I had with the new one is the mic sounded like absolute shit as you can hear in my PUBG clips above. So I went and ordered a condenser mic. It got here and I plugged it and while it did sound slightly better was still shitty.
Turns out the new laptop has a Realtek sound control panel that had filtering, then discord had filtering, then I was also running the Nvidia RTX voice AI.
I shut off all filtering and did some tests and it sounds way better. So I turned on the built in realtek noise filter and left all other filtering disabled. Good to go now.
Nvidia RTX voice is a cool little program but I don't think it works right with push to talk.

Jedi Fallen Order has an adaptive resolution scaling option, I decided to turn it on and my framerate went from 40's-60's to 80's-100's. I also don't see much (if any) difference in quality.

Thats the cool thing about the new DLSS I think its called? It will internally render a game at 720p then upscale it to your native res giving you like an 80% performance boost over running it over native res. Nvidia is actually shooting themselves in the foot a bit if you think about it cuz it could keep people from upgrading.

I found a forum post somewhere talking about how you can go into the game's config file and custom set the resolution scaling too, I haven't tried yet though.
*edit* Finally got to an area where the dynamic resolution scaling really stood out, it was enough to make me turn it off. Maybe I'll mess with the game's config file later and see if it can be made better. It was a dark area with lots of fog and the lightsaber beams looked extremely jagged. Character models and everything else around looked fine though,

On my old laptop in DEMKD DX12 runs just fine but it is 5 fps average less in the built in benchmark. On the new one DX12 is a slideshow. Not sure the difference.
One thing cool is that when you go to the TF29 base on my old laptop it would bog down overlooking the center area full of people, on my new laptop its totally smooth.

I just realized today marks 2 weeks since I have been on 32 gigs of RAM. I don't notice a different. At all. lol.

Yeah 32gb is still overkill, but there may come a time soon when it's not. I think some games now require or at least recommend 16gb of RAM, Star Citizen is one of them.

Wow 256gb is a LOT. Was it a server? Yeah running simulation software. On Windows 7 it capped at 192 gigs and only got to use the full 256 gigs when it was upgraded to 10.

That's not good, if AMD becomes the dominant one they might probably increase their CPU prices. That would be very ironic.
I might've actually considered getting the 9700K for that price ($329), although I got my Ryzen 3800X for $259.
9900K for $429 is a killer deal, so is the 10700K for $399.
*edit* Wow I just checked again, the prices are even lower now. 9900K for $379 and 10700K for $349.

Not sure if I want to start a new thread for it but got some upgrades on my bike. I got new handgrips that are locked into place and made of silicon that forms to your fingers.
Also back in 2005 I got a seat post with a shock in it so it acts like a suspension. It wore out years ago and I keep meaning to replace it. Also the old one didn't quite fit my new bike I got in 2016 so I really had to clamp down on it to get it to fit. I found a local shop that had one in the exact size of the seat post of my bike 27.2 mm.
I went riding with it yesterday and I noticed it right away. Dunno why I waited 15 year to replace it lol.
I also got a new gel seat pad and padded underwear coming from amazon, never tried those but I read good reviews.

I downgraded my 10 year old PC today. The last few days it had been acting up, most likely video card related, but after a few reboots it would usually work fine for as long as you left it turned on (which I don't get at all, I understand if there's something broken and it doesn't work, but why would it eventually just keep working?). It was starting to get annoying having to reboot more and more often before it would take hold, so I switched it out with an ever older card I had still lying around after an even older PC died terminally not too long after replacing its videocard way back in the day.
I went from an Asus Geforce 9600 GS to an Asus Geforce 8400 GS, lol, it doesn't even have a fan on it. But it works for what I use it (just browsing the net) and it even supports dual monitors although I had to revert to VGA instead of DVI for the second screen (which I only use for watching youtube/videos while browsing on the main screen). Still better than nothing, but I guess that's it for playing games with this PC.
I need to upgrade everything anyway, maybe this will finally push me over the edge...

I have a full sus bike, just recently I bought a high PSI pump so I could air up the shocks, the rear one was getting especially squishy. Something they don't tell you, if you do a lot of hopping and jumping, the shocks seem to lose air, doesn't help that I also tend to take the more difficult lines. Much better dialed in now, when the rear shock isn't aired up enough it gets harder to pedal especially uphill. I bought a bunch of mountain biking clothes recently too, trekbikes.com was having a sale that I think is still going on.

If you don't need a gaming PC and don't prefer using a laptop, you could probably just get one of those super small compact PC's, the hardware in them has gotten a lot better over the years. I think some of them even use those Ryzen chips with integrated graphics.

That's an idea, but I think I'd rather go with a somewhat decent (gaming) PC so I can play some of the games that passed me by over the years and are now dirt cheap to get and that would make me safe for a few years to come until I lose interest again, kinda like I've been doing for the past few computers. Play it till it can't play no more, stop playing games for a while or move to a console then after a while go back and scoop up a bunch of cheapo games that came out in the interim. To be honest though, this has been the longest by far I've ever done with a computer. Only other thing that broke (apart from the video card recently) was the HDD a few years back, which I replaced with an SSD.

To be honest though, this has been the longest by far I've ever done with a computer. Only other thing that broke (apart from the video card recently) was the HDD a few years back, which I replaced with an SSD. Now's a good time to get back into PC gaming. PC has the best selection of games overall. PC gaming popularity has gone back up over the years. Many developers now co-develop games on PC simultaneously with the console version (rather than developing on console 1st and then porting a shittier version to PC later on). The new Microsoft Flight Simulator coming this August looks great. Cyberpunk, due in November, is another game I'm looking forward to. I've owned PS1/2/3/4. But I'll probably skip the PS5. I've read many game reviews and it appears that Sony now has the strictest censorship in the industry. You'd think that'd be Nintendo. Nintendo has lightened up on censorship though (following the failure of the WiiU) and many uncensored 3rd party games (even some ambitious titles like Witcher 3) have been ported to the Switch. I don't see strong incentives for buying an Xbox either, since it's exclusives are timed exclusives and eventually make their way to PC.

I think I actually have withdrawals when I don't go mountain biking. I went 3 times last week but we have had torrential downpour rain here the last week. Its bad to go biking on the trails after huge rains because it fucks them up, plus its not fun to ride through mud. I could go ride through the city on the paved trails but I prefer being in the woods. One time when I lived in Arizona I was on a ride and I saw the Monsoon clouds rolling in. I decided to see if I could make it before it hit.............I failed lol. About 10 minutes from my car I got dumped on hardcore and the sand turned into mud. Had to drag my bike back to my car.

Oh yeah I know what that's like. One time I got stuck in a very heavy downpour with at least 2 miles to get back to the parking lot, got soaked and my bike had a ton of mud all over it. Also had to stop at times to clear out mud between the frame and rear wheel with a stick so I could keep going. Still, it was a lot of fun. The trails around here close whenever it rains, but the good thing is when they re-open they're nice and tacky.

My chain's been slipping on first gear lately, sometimes it won't shift back down from 2nd gear easily. It doesn't happen until a while after I start riding, also doesn't happen past the first 2 gears. I think the chain might be stretched a little bit, I tend to stay in the first several gears and not change it much, even on climbs and I think that has put more stress on it than it could handle. Gonna see about replacing it with a better chain, hopefully that will fix it.
There isn't much elevation around where I live but one trail I go to frequently has nice elevation gain in the first loop, always gets my heart going. One place I want to go someday is Spider Mountain near Austin, there's actually a lift to get to the top.

When I first got my bike in 2016 the chain wasn't very good so they replaced it.
I really like elevation I don't like biking on flat ground if I can avoid it. I went out on Saturday to a local park but there were way too many people with Coronavirus. Was a group of old women together had to be in their 60s or 70s all bunched together.
Debating taking the day off of work tomorrow since will be less people out on a Tuesday at like 10 am vs a Saturday.

I think I fixed it, just adjusted the knob/spring on the shifter cable and now the chain slipping seems to have stopped.

Went 13 miles with 230+ feet of elevation gain on Friday, been so hungry for the past few days and just can't stop eating. I think I ate a whole extra large pizza.
