Arachnophobia (Download): What is it with these '80s family friendly horror movie that makes them so great? This is another Spielberg-adjacent example of that. Setting up and paying off, foreshadowing and good tension build-up all while being entertaining and funny in the right parts. John Goodman is especially great as the exterminator. So strange I never even bought this on DVD back in the day. I haven't seen that movie since I was like 10, I remember someone dramatically running out of the room because of the spiders on the screen. I dunno if it would hold up to my memories.

Dead Space: Downfall So 10+ years ago I watched a Dead Space anime and I turned it off after 10 minutes because it was so bad............I don't think it was this one unless I am remembering wrong. Turns out they made two, maybe I saw the other one. Either way since I am playing the 2023 remake I sat down and watched this entire anime with a friend this weekend. Its not half-bad. Not terrible but not amazing. Some of the art work is great but its mostly meh. The Dragon Age anime they made was better looking but this has a better plot.
Interesting to see the way the downfall of the ship depicted in the anime vs the game. The game starts at the moment the credits roll on the anime. Going to need to try the sequel.

No One Will Save You (Download): Surprisingly great little creature feature from the guy that wrote 'Love and Monsters' and 'Underwater', which are the titles I noticed in his imdb credits that convinced me to give this a go despite not being particulary interested in the flick. It's all about this secluded living girl that gets an alien visitor one night and it builds from there. Keeps surprising and subverting expectations right up until the ending that has somewhat of a twist to it and it has well done tense moments throughout and the occasional jump. Best movie of the night. Just saw this one, watched it because Stephen King recommended it. Very different kind of movie just like he said it was, but it kinda reminded me of A Quiet Place with how there was next to no dialogue. Strange ending that may have segued into comedy after it had been sci-fi/horror the whole time, but overall I also thought it was a great movie. Actually reminded me of a long episode of The Twilight Zone too, I think that's why I liked it a lot.

Futurama season 11 - I think all of it is out now, had heard there were gonna be 20 episodes but a new one (would've been the 11th) didn't come out this past weekend. If that is it for season 11 it's a little disappointing (only because it's over already), but it's a welcome return none the less. I think the 8th episode (Zapp Gets Canceled) was my favorite. Bender is hilarious as always, so glad John DiMaggio came back to voice him.

Anyone else had trouble getting on here this weekend? Anyway, here's what I watched:
Gran Turismo (Download): Pretty decent zero to hero movie that hits all the clichés of the genre and takes quite a few liberties with the moniker 'based on a true story' although that may always be the case and I only noticed this time because I'm a bit more familiar with the source material. Still, for a videogame movie and a racing game movie on top of that, it's very watchable indeed...
Locke (Download): Tom Hardy in his car, on the phone, for 90 minutes and while I didn't particulary care for his problems, I still appreciated his acting.
Jabberwocky (Download): Classic post-Monty Python Terry Gilliam flick that has all the hallmarks but without the pythons playing all the parts themselves. Funny silliness and early Gilliam fantasy visuals make this very enjoyable to watch.
Reptile (Download): Murder mystery that started well but kinda lost me along the way when the reveal was exactly what they had been setting up from the middle of the movie. Benicio Del Toro was good though and Alicia Silverstone looks better as a milf than she did when she was younger but that might just be me...
VR Fighter - One More Shot (Download): Chinese action flick that wasn't as good as I had hoped. It showed hints of greatness in some of the action scenes but it couldn't translate it into a full length movie. I was however very surprised to find out that the actor playing the main character was the same guy that played Ricky Oh in that classic HK CatIII splatter fest.
Better Off Dead (Download/DVD): One of my favorite '80s somedies and it still holds up tremendously well.
I also watched the second episode of The Continental which keeps being very good and eventually I saw the first few episodes of Gen V which I found out too late is actually a spin-off from the Boys and has all the gore and crudness of that show but in a 'teen drama' series...

*edit* Woops wrong thread, sorry.
Anyway I also enjoyed the movie The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, it's only 40 min long. Got the gist of it but will probably watch again to really understand it.

Face/Off (Bluray): The epitome of pre-matrix action cool with a Hong Kong director at the top of his game in his best Hollywood effort. Also a pre-CG flick, with practical stunts, real fire, squibbs and actual muzzle flashes, which still looks way better than anything computer generated. It had been a while since I last saw this and I hoped it would hold up and boy did it ever. Travolta and Cage hamming it up with great gusto, cool set pieces, good action and all the hero shots you could wish for from a John Woo movie.
V\H\S '85 (Download): Another one of these anthologies and as far as I'm concerned one of the better ones. Doesn't start off great, with the second one probably being the weakest of the bunch, but from the halfway point it's all upwards, with the last one, directed by Scott Derrickson, being the high point. Almost seems like a spinoff from Sinister, in the same tone and style, but without the silly demon. And I also really liked the VR one, which starts off as a pretentious college play before delving into gore...
The Continental - Entire Series (Download): The explosive finale in the 3rd episode concludes a mini-series that was well worth watching and well worth the John Wick moniker. Might not be a great or stylish as any of the individual movies but then they didn't try to top those but tell a story in the same universe with characters we knew 40 years later.

Demons (Theater/Live band): When I was like 6 I saw this movie and it scared the crap out of me. I was not ready for that kind of gore. I got to see the band that did the score Goblin play the score live while the movie played in the background. A woman next to me seemed kinda bored, then the gore kicked in. I don't think she was prepared for how over the top gory this movie is compared to many horror flicks. She was kinda twitchy and uncomfortable flinching pretty hard.
I thought I got the best seat in the house on the balcony, but the wings of the balcony of this theater kinda curved inward and nobody was on the left side so I moved over there. Was right in front of the speakers but I just used my noise canceling earbuds and ANC. Got me a lot closer to the screen.
After the movie the band kept playing for 1.5 hours more playing songs from other movies I have never seen and some classics like the Halloween theme. Glad I went.

Minghags: Wow. I have seen a LOT of bad movies but this is horrible. Didn't finish it. Bam Margera of Jackass/CKY fame filmed this with the CKY crew around West Chester/Philly in his spare time. Took years to release, its a loose sequel to his first movie Haggard, that movie is bad this one is nearly unwatchable. I didn't actually finish it.
See if you can sit through this, this is a random 11 minute chunk of the film but you aren't missing anything, the whole movie is like this:

1408 (Download): Last time I saw this movie was in the cinema when it first came out and I didn't particulary like it so I never bought it or even bothered rewatching. The past weeks however I've been reading the Stephen King book during the breaks at work in which this story is included and it got me interested again, because there's not much meat to the story. It's just a set-up and you never know what actually happened inside the room. The best part of this movie is everything leading up to the room as well. Once inside it's all dream logic that goes on for way too long before there's any kind of resolution. Jump scares and too little tension build-up. I still can't say I particulary liked it but it was nice to recognise some details from the story.
The Conference (Download): Swedish slasher that's a lot like the movie Severance in which a teambuilding weekend gets shaken up by people getting killed. This is not nearly as funny as that one but it still has recognisable workplace relations which makes it amusing and the kills are pretty graphic as well. Fun watch overall.
Antlers (Download): Now we're talking. It's been a while since I've seen a creature feature this good. Great atmosphere, cool creature, gruesome and tense. Worth checking out if you're into creature features. Only has 5.9 on imdb as opposed to 6.8 for 1408, but is so much more satisfying and better in every single way.
The Mill (Download): High-concept flick that I expected to turn off but surprised me by actually being pretty solid. It's not unlike a Black Mirror episode. Guy wakes up in a triangular walled-off open-air space that has just a mill in the middle and he's expected to push it around to stay alive. Looks better than expected thoughout and against all odds also ends in a way that's both unexpected and satisfactory, which is not always the case in these kinds of high-concept movies.

Evil Dead The Musical (Live theater): I remember hearing about this years ago. I didn't realize it was 20 years ago. This has been a thing since 2003. It combines Evil Dead 1 + 2 into one story and has mentions of Army of Darkness. You can sit in the "soak zone" and get sprayed with fake blood. I sat right behind there. Near the very end one of the actresses came up to the side of the stage and accidentally dropped her bottle of fake blood. The rest of the cast was like "wtf" when she got shot and didn't spray blood everywhere. The high point of the show is when the actor playing Ash did the "this is my boomstick" monologue from Army of Darkness. The crowd went nuts: I thought it was cool they were still updating the story with modern pop culture references. I'm not a big musical guy, they had like 4 songs in a row at one point and it kinda dragged. Like can we have some action? {CLICK FOR SPOILER}Also the left out Bobby Joe from Evil Dead 2 and one of the actors explained she was kind of redundant with all the other female characters around which got a good chucked from the audience. I'd recommend it if you love the Evil Dead series.

Horror night friday night, action saturday (with 1 movie bridging the 2)
Renfield (Bluray): Nic Cage having a great time as Dracula in an extremely bloody comedy horror full of surprisingly well choreographed action set pieces.
Swordfish (Download/DVD): Didn't think this 2001 movie would hold up as well as it did 20 years on, but it still looks pretty good, also in HD, with just a few moments of less than amazing CG, but the big bullet time explosion at the beginning still looks pretty convincing. Sure, it's all nonsense, but it has flair.
Expendables 4 (Download): To be honest, I expected it to be worse after seeing some reviews. It's not great, the worst of it being so incredibly fake looking at times, like nothing was done practical and the CG is uncanny valley at the best of times and just plain bad at the worst, but the shootout finale was kinda cool and nothing else annoyed me enough to really dislike it.
Bad City (Download): Japanese cops vs Yakuza action thriller filled with group fights and Tak Sakaguchi as a bad guy, which I wasn't aware of beforehand, but I instantly recognised his fighting style when he showed up. Decent.

One of my friends saw this in the theater and since i knew it had hacking in it I was like "Let me guess in the hacking scene the computer has like 5 monitors and there are explosions on the screen?" hes like "actually yeah thats exactly how it looked" Also I love how John Travolta's character is supposedly the most wanted man on the planet but he drives a sports car down the street and casually strolls into a night club in front of a dozen witnesses at one point, then fires a machine gun driving downtown.....

Rick and Morty season 7 premiere - Was really curious how the new voice actors for the title characters would sound, Morty sounds a little bit different but Rick sounds pretty much 100% spot-on which really surprised me. The episode itself was pretty funny and features characters from past episodes but the character of Rick was different in this one, just seemed like a more empathic and nice person compared to how he usually is. Not bad I guess.

You Don't Mess with the Zohan - In light of what's happening in Israel/Gaza, decided to put on this movie. Pretty dumb and has Adam Sandler but it does have some laughs. If only the Israelis and Palestinians could get along and coexist. Also the story may not be too far off, about wealthy corporate interests causing that conflict.

Mission Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part 1 (Download): Looks like it's an impossible mission for Tom Cruise to make a bad movie anymore. Even with a plot that's a bit silly and convoluted and has quite a bit of deus ex machina, the end result is still exciting and extremely entertaining. The movie completely hooked me in with the Fiat 500 chase, which had me laughing out loud a few times. And in spite of this just being a first part, it nevertheless ends in a satisfying way.
Old Dads (Download): First movie directed by Bill Burr and probably very autobiographic, about an older dad's rage getting him in constant trouble. If you like Bill, you'll like this movie but I think Bobby Cannavale actually stole the show. He seemed to have the best lines or at least the best reactions to whatever was going on.
A Field in England (Download): Strange black and white movie by Ben Wheatley about 4 deserters under the influence of an alchemist having to dig up a treasure. Movie starts with a epilepsy warning and yeah, towards the end it gets a bit crazy with the visuals...
Flashback (Download): Short movie, about 15 minutes, about time travel that was cute enough.
The Dead Zone (Download): The ending is what makes this movie because up to that point I found it to be very uneven and fragmented, lacking focus. Also, the woman playing Christopher Walken's mom was 4 years older than him, but looking 40 years older...
Saw X (Download): Pretty decent episode in the franchise, better than most, but boy, does it take its time getting going. Literally the first 30 minutes is just John Kramer finding out he has cancer and going to doctors. It is setting something up, but you don't know that and all the while you're just seeing an old and sick man shuffle around.
Knockaround Guys (Download/DVD): Fun little movie dealing with the exploits of side characters of most mafia movies, starring a young Vin Diesel and Barry Pepper...

Captain Laserhawk - A Blood Dragon Remix - Season 1 (Download): Somewhat surprisingly, this Ubisoft animated series (6x20m) is actually kinda awesome. Loved watching it, the animation looked cool (fake anime, but done really well, I suspect the same people responsible for that big red vampire segment in Love Death and Robots, although I've yet been unable to confirm this) and sometimes it turns into all kinds of 90"s game-situations, like a side-scrolling brawler, a top-down RPG/puzzle game or even Crazy Taxi, depending on the situation. It has a cast of colourful characters, ultraviolence and a decent enough storyline to push things along. It's just so much fun to watch and at a total of some 2 hours for all episodes, it also doesn't outstay its welcome...

Schindler's List (Bluray): First time I've ever seen this movie from start to finish. I'd seen parts of it here and there but never sat down to see the entire thing. In recent years however, I've been planning to rectify this and as it was part of a recent bluray sale, I ran out of excuses. It's not a fun movie but seeing how the world is moving once again in a similar direction, I'd say it's an important movie. I am glad I waited as long as I did because I certainly wasn't ready for it a decade ago, let alone when it first came out.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Cage Match (Bluray): The first time I wait for the bluray instead of downloading it beforehand and it turns out to be the weakest of the bunch, lol. That's not fair, it's not that bad, but I think it needed to be based on the new Mortal Kombat, which means the new characters are unknown and unloved, and frankly not that interesting. Only at the end, when Shinnok shows up (also not the most interesting bad guy), it starts getting better. Cage himself is good throughout the movie however and I really dug the neon "80s esthetic of the whole thing. It's just the story that was kinda weak...
Sisu (Bluray): If Schindler's List is the most serious WW2 movie ever made, Sisu is on the complete opposite of the spectrum. Bloody action schlock, firmly tongue in cheek and entertaining as hell...

Below (Download): Early 2000s haunted submarine movie by David Twohy that I've always liked but haven't seen in a decade or so. Never managed to snag it on bluray but glad I got to rewatch it. Sparingly use of CGI, as it should be, and a neat tale of a patrol turned ghost house with interesting characters and (at the time) a surprising ending. Movie holds up better than expected.
Five Nights at Freddy's (Download): Never played any of the games so I can't compare but what I do know is I should've backed away when I saw the Blumhouse logo that opened the movie. It's another gorefree tension-free PG-13 'horror' with a much too convoluted story. Seriously, the family situation alone is incomprehensible. So a brother whose brother was taken as a child, lives alone with his much, much younger sister while a much older sister is trying to take custody but in the flashbacks neither of those siblings is ever to be seen, just the 2 brothers. It makes no sense... ...and that's even without any mechanical bears thrown into the mix. Stick to Willy's Wonderland for a fun puppet-schlock horror.
Boiler Room (Download): Stock market movie that stands the test of time. As it was in 2000, it still is 20 years later. Investment types doing shady stuff with other people's money. A bunch of young actors, and again Vin Diesel (see Knockaround Guys), doing a good job in a well paced and exciting movie (especially taking into consideration it's about stock trading).

V/H/S/85: We put this on at a Halloween party last night. Everyone ended up watching this instead of playing Cards Against Humanity. The stories went in ways I wasn't expecting except for the one about VR.
I liked it but I barely remember the other V/H/S movie I saw 10 years ago or so. I can't compare.

Dunno if they are industrial fans or if they Googled "scary songs"

Event Horizon (Bluray): So I wanted to watch the original Saw with the kids for Halloween but I was getting pushback and they wanted options. They settled on Event Horizon instead, which is fine by me. I wanted to show them a universally liked horror flick, I mean, nobody young doesn't like the original Saw, but late 90"s interdimensional space horror it was.
Limbo (Bluray): One of the best movies I've seen in recent years. I was amazed I managed to find this Chinese movie on bluray (in Germany, with English subs and everything) for an acceptable price at all because that certainly isn't a given anymore.
Sorry, Charlie (Download): Single location thriller about a woman on the phone getting stalked. Wasn't the best but it certainly wasn't bad either. The twist at the end was a great idea that could have been done better but it still was somewhat satisfying. Guess the guy that made this is slowly starting to get better because one of his previous movies (Snow Falls) showed up on a Redlettermedia episode where they mocked it relentlessly.
Land of the Dead (Download/DVD): (re)Watching this movie after a decade of zombie overdoses certainly doesn't help it. It would even be only a mediocre Walking Dead episode (with exceptionally well done gore) but that's about it.
