Star Trek: Discovery - Season 1 (Download): Rewatch of the first season before I start watching season 2. I was contemplating just buying it on bluray but I couldn't quite remember how well I liked it and I'd kept all the downloads anyway so I thought: "I'll just rewatch those and if it turns out I still like it, I'll get the boxset once the price has come down a bit." I should've just bought the season because it turns out I do rather like it, moreso than other Trek, apart from the new movies, which I also like. I've never been that much of a Trekkie, seen some of the original series back in the day, quite a bit of TNG and some of the movies and this Trek is the most up my particular alley. Looks great, not the flat lighting and cheap sets of the series, great FX and who cares if the story isn't real Trek, I don't care about real Trek that much. I care about this kinda shit more... Sounds like it's Gene Roddenberry's ST universe you don't like. Generally speaking, trekkies prefer the ST universe he created and many non-trekkies prefer the newer stuff. Ever since Gene died a while back and he's no longer a creative influence, ST hasn't been ST. I kind of like both (depending on the movie - some of the old movies are good, some aren't). JJ Trek isn't perfect either. In the space battles, there's often too much going on the screen at once to know what's happening. And if that wasn't enough, he threw in lens flare galore to further distract the audience. Reminds me of the Transformers movies and "cinema of bewilderment" as Mark Hamill described (Transformers) in an interview. Also, Spock wasn't true to the original character. He has breakdowns too frequently and can be a sobbing emo in the newer movies. Of course, it's not the actor's fault for the director & writers deviating from the original vision of ST and its characters. It wasn't all bad tho and there were some good performances. Karl Urban as McCoy (aka. Bones) did a terrific job. The character portrayal and his acting were very true to DeForest Kelley's version of Bones. And the actor that played Chekov in the recent movies (Anton Yelchin - RIP) was really good too. He'll be missed.

When I was a kid Star Trek TNG was by far my favorite and to this day Picard is the best captain. That said Star Trek DS9 is imo the best series, besides the weak acting from the actress who plays Kira which is too bad for such an important character.
DS9 is just more realistic and has plenty of great episodes.

Also I have tried So. Hard. to like Voyager and I just can't stand watching it. I have read a really long defense of the show where the person strenuously argued Voyager is just as good as TNG but I don't feel it at all. I can't even force myself to watch it.

Voyager was a snooze fest. TNG is the best ST series, imo. A few episodes of ST:TOS are decent (the remastered version on Amazon Prime anyway... they replace the cheesy ships and planets models with acceptable CGI effects). The one with Romulans and another one where the characters are transported to a parallel universe (with evil versions of themselves) are particular good.

Overlord (Download): Tried watching it in the theatre but it only played for one fucking week in the place I go to and I missed it. I usually go on friday but the cinema week starts on wednesday and I only found out after the weekend this movie was playing and by the time the new schedule was posted I couldn't make it anymore. Anyway, this is basically a moderately budgeted Wolfenstein movie with some good moments but takes maybe a little too long to get to the good stuff. It ramps up noticably once the main character enters the lab... ...speaking of the main guy. A black paratrooper in WW2? Not only that, but their squad's sergeant was also black? Somehow I don't think there would be racially mixed companies as early as the '40s. It didn't make my enjoyment of the movie less, hey, it has nazi zombie supersoldiers as well, but it's weird they felt they needed to do that...

Prospect (Download): Slow scifi/western about a girl and her dad dropping down to a planet to look for some rare and valuable resource. It's scifi because of the setting but it plays out just like a western. It's also low budget but they do a great job of masking it with some very good CGI FX for the space freighter and a great choice of locations and CG matte paintings. The props and costumes look good too, realistically aged and worn. It's slow, yes, but not in an annoying way. I have to say I rather liked it. As far as I know it's also not attached to some sort of streaming service so there's a good chance it might come out on bluray.
Climax (Download): The newest trip by Gaspar Noé, who you might know from Irréversible and Enter the Void, this time about a group of dancers that get served Sangria spiked with LSD. It's Gaspar Noé, so you get end credits at the beginning, opening credits somewhere in the middle and all kinds of visual trickery. Sometimes the camera moves from action to action uninterruptedly in spectacular long takes, sometimes it's pointed straight down and sometimes it's just completely upside down. The music is especially noteworthy, using all kinds of memorable techno tracks of which I recognised quite a few. Aphex Twin, Daft Punk, Neon, MARRS, so many more that escape my memory right now, but they all get their own credit in the middle of the movie... ...and then the drugs kick in. Everyone's feelings and emotions that you uncovered in all kinds of dialogues in the first part of the movie get hightened and the madness kicks in with pumping music underneath all the screaming and shouting. It's a trip, one I liked a lot more than I figured I would...
Happy Death Day (Bluray): There's one advantage to discovering something a bit late: you don't have to wait for it to come out and then some more for the price to come down. Hence: rewatch of Happy Death Day on bluray so soon after watching a downloaded version. It holds up.
Evangelion 1.11 - You Are (Not) Alone (DVD): First movie in the 4-part Evangelion reboot. Came out in 2007 already and part 4 is scheduled for 2020, that's a long ass time. I've also bought the second in 2009. Apparently the 3rd took till 2012 but I completely missed it, probably completely forgot about it by that time. I was planning to look for it, either to download or to buy after rewatching both DVDs this weekend. Hope it's still around somewhere.

Evangelion 2.22 - You Can (Not) Advance (DVD): It's incredible how serious they take this stuff. The fights are so epic, the opera-like music, the animation, the crazy designs. The destruction, lol, so over-the-top. I live for this shit.
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (Download): And the award for the best title goes to... ...this little indie (?) film about an old man reminiscing about his life and achievements before being recruited to go hunt Bigfoot. It stars an amazing Sam Elliott, his great mustache-acting and his incredible cool voice. Unlike you'd expect from the title, it's not some sort of comedy or pastiche movie but it's an emotional portrait about getting old and looking back at life and the choices you made but not the typical slow-ass boring movie this would usually result in. It's feel-good and touching but it also has an old man fighting a Bigfoot.
Evangelion 3.33 - You Can (Not) Redo (Download): It's 14 years after the last movie and all the humor from the past episodes is gone. It's so serious all of a sudden, but at least it still has amazing designs and visually opulent fighting scenes with big robots using all kinds of crazy powers (and their fists). I also noticed this is the first movie to feature a more cinematic aspect ratio as opposed to the 1.85:1 of the first 2. And now the wait begins for the finale, which should be next year.

Battle Angel Alita 3D (Theatre): Not bad, not bad at all. Went in with massive reservations, being a huge fan of the anime en even having read the entire manga it's based on (Gunnm). They manage to include most character beats, the good cast doesn't embarrass itself and the visuals are mostly appropriate. I did feel the city wasn't run down enough. The difference between it and Zarem looked marginal, while it should be an inhabited trash heap, but that's nitpicking. They even managed to include Motorball, by far the weakest part of the manga (not present in the anime at all because it normally takes place after the story arc of both the anime and this movie), but here it fit in well and makes the movie at least stand out a bit, not just being another robots beating eachother up-movie. They included some more character beats and situations from later in the manga but they kept true to the Yugo (here Hugo) story-arc, which I think is a good decision. It's the emotional heart of the story. The manga veers off in all kinds of directions, nothing that would fit inside a 2 hour movie, and none of which are as good as the anime (ie. the story arc of this movie as well)...

I have read very few Manga but when I was a teen I think I read one of these. I remember nothing about it besides the final panel being the main character losing a fight and being like "losing feels so good" and then dying. Its been 20+ years do I might have it confused with something else.

Yeah, I don't think that's right.
Deadpool 2 - Super Duper Cut (Bluray): It's Deadpool, what else do you want me to say?
Eureka Seven: Hi-Evolution (Download): Confusing anime that has so much text on screen you need to pauze to read up on it from time to time. It's a continuation/reboot of a series and it does so in all kinds of flashbacks and flash forwards to the point you'll have no idea what's going on. 23 days ago, 3 days ago, 7 days ago, 20 days ago... ...enough already! Visually good, though not great, not like other robot anime I've seen recently whose animation was even better. After about 30 minutes, it also switches aspect ratio from 1.85:1 to 4:3, guess it re-uses scenes from the TV-series it's based on or something. It's weird. Not unwatchable, just confusing.
Battle Angel Alita (DVD): I just had to rewatch this, the original anime is just so much better. They need so much less time to tell you more, especially the beginning is so much quicker but I don't feel like I'm missing any information that's needed for later. Fights are more violent, gore aplenty, and rewatching this reminded me: why do we never hear the cables of the city in the live-action remake?

Origin - Spirits of the Past (Bluray): Goodlooking anime with a bit of a standard anime plot and an ecological message. Pretty much average in every way but certainly not bad...
Journey to the Edge of the Universe 3D (Download): Pretty neat documentary (narrated by Sean Pertwee, who doesn't die in a movie for once) about our universe. The beginning was less than stellar (hoho!) with CG that wasn't that great for the surface of the moon and all kinds of planets in our solar system, but once we start getting further and further away from Earth and the spectacle becomes increasingly large, it looks just fine. I'd expected a bit more of an effect of the 3D, maybe I've just seen too many 3D movies at this point to still be impressed when it isn't done exceptionally well. Visuals aside, it's just interesting as fuck, putting us humans in our place in the cosmos, as the insignificant specs of dust that we are...
Venom 3D (Download): I hadn't really thought about Venom anymore, skipped it when it first made the rounds on the circuit after seeing it in the theatre and not being that impressed but then I happened to come across this 3D version which made me think I'd should check that out to see if it would be worth getting it on 3D bluray eventually. You know, it is, maybe not just for the 3D but I really, really started to dig this movie this time around. For one the CGI didn't look quite as bad on the smaller screen (with proper contrast, brightness and actual black levels, not just variations of grey) but I also dug Tom Hardy's performance even more. It's a shame they didn't find a way to put a white spider logo on Venom, which to me is iconic about his look even moreso than the mouth or eyes. I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I really liked this movie...

SPL 2: A Time for Consequences (Bluray): The plot may be a little convoluted but if they package it into an action movie this great, who cares? I bought this a while ago, too soon after watching it on TV, so it kind of fell by the wayside, almost forgotten about. Good thing about that was I did forget large parts of it and so I got to experience it again pretty fresh. The fights are great, especially the main bad guy, who fights in a very stylish manner... Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse (Download): Wow... ...just wow! If this doesn't win the best animated feature Oscar™ on sunday, something is very, very wrong with that entire institution (lol, as if it isn't already ). Hell, it deserves a best picture nomination even, a lot more than Black Panther, I can tell you. Anyway, back to this movie: it's hard to believe this is an American animated movie, some of the visuals one would expect to find in some crazy japanese anime. In fact, the entire visual style is noteworthy. Most 3D CG movies look too similar, even the good ones, but this manages to find a fresh approach, implementing the imperfections of comic book prints of old, like moiré and whatever it's called when the colours aren't properly aligned. It tells a good story as well but for me the visuals were the star of the show. I can't wait to rewatch this in 3D. I'd planned doing that anyway, but I just couldn't wait for a 3D version to show up. I still have a gift card from a multimedia store, I might blow it on a full price 3D bluray of this movie... Wicked City (Download/DVD): Earlier this week a 1080p HD version of one of my favorite anime showed up on the places where you get these things so I snagged it as quickly as I could. There was one with just the Japanese soundtrack and there was one with that and an English dub, I figured I'd try both and keep the best one. I can tell you now I don't ever plan on watching that dub. It's not the one I grew up with on VHS but a different one (American dub vs UK on the old VHS?). It just didn't sound right at all. I'd prefer the Japanese anyway, but maybe just for completion and nostalgia's sake I'd want the English version as well. Not this version though. It looks great, I mean, it's a Japanese animated movie from 1987 so don't expect it to look like a modern one would, but it looks incredibly clean and smooth, decidedly better than the DVD I own, but the soundtrack is the real step up from my DVD. It was always a bit iffy, with some noise and popping in one channel. Not enough to be bothered by if you're a fan of the movie, but it's definately better without. They don't make'em like this anymore. This level of sex and violence combined with a story and good, uncensored animation just doesn't happen anymore... Happy! - Season 1 (Download): Long overdue rewatch of this great little series about a blue unicorn tracking down the father of the girl he's an imaginary friend to and who's been kidnapped by an evil Santa Claus. It's even crazier than it sounds. Second season supposedly it going to come out in march, so what better time for rewatching a classic tale of ultraviolence and insect orgies?

Alien: Covenant: You know I keep forgetting they are making more Alien movies. I forgot about this movie completely. It was ok. I was heavily reminded of Event Horizon for the first half and Event Horizon is a better movie. The CGI aliens flipping around look terrible as to be expected. I'd like the movie more if it was a worse movie because then it would be more fun. One cool thing: {CLICK FOR SPOILER}I liked watching the androids fight each other but the scene is like 10 seconds long.

Alien: Covenant:One cool thing: You do the blowing, I'll do the fingering? Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse (Download): Watched it again with the kids. Still great but I did forget to mention something I didn't like in my previous 'review'. The horrible, horrible rap songs on the soundtrack. All that autotuned drivel, ugh. There are a couple of good ones, his uncle is more old school, so he listens to Biggie and Run-DMC, but all the new ones are almost all completely shit. How did hiphop evolve into this and better yet: how did that shit catch on??? Seven (Bluray): Classic, timeless, great, one of the best... Kong: Skull Island 3D (3D Bluray): So much fun and works great in 3D. Can't wait for the monsters in this universe to meet up. That's still happening, right? I want to see Godzilla and Kong team up to beat King Ghidorah... A Quiet Place (Bluray): Is it ever explained where they get their power from? Also, how did they manage to construct all that without being able to make noise. Can't hammer, can't drill, can't saw. And where did they get all the white sand? All that white sand that's on the paved road, one rainstorm and it's all gone. Can't use a broom to get it back together either, too noisy. Disregarding all that, it's a good movie, with good tension build-up, just wish I could stop asking questions like this... Mega Time Squad (Download): Little New Zealand flick about a guy using an ancient bracelet to time travel in order to steal back some money from his his gangster boss. Pretty sure they break all kinds of time travel rules, but it works for this comedy setting. One of the henchmen has a recognisable face, I knew I'd seen him somewhere before. Turns out he's in another time travel movie (or rather time loop movie): Blood Punch (and also the metal horror comedy Deathgasm). It's fun and short enough to not get bothered by it...

The character of Smoothie is great. This sarcastic hitman who just wants to torture but is tasked with these jobs that are way below him, like babysitting. "I am going to remove your penis, in thin slices, like salami, just for starters." "That’s gonna take you a long time, if you know what I mean... ...This guy gets it..."

Just great overall, some effective plot twists and it even had heart, which is something that many movies these days lack. I kind of agree on some of the music choices, but I really liked hearing that song "Hypnotize" by Notorious BIG in there.

True Detective - Season 3 (Download): Saved this up until it was complete so I could binge it in one go. Had high hopes and I wasn't disappointed. It ran a bit out of steam towards the end but the first half was very good, almost up to the level of the first season, which is still one of the best TV-series ever made. The biggest surprise of this season was without a doubt Stephen Dorrf. I was a bit taken aback when I saw his name in the credits of the first episode but he was very, very good. Another surprise was seeing the name of Jeremy Saulnier as director of the first few episodes. I was unaware he'd done that. I don't know if he's got much to do with it, but those first episodes look better than the rest as well. The first season is still the standard to which everything will be measured, but this was pretty good and a lot more fulfilling than the second season of which I only remember not liking it all that much...
Firebase (Purchased Download): Apparently this is the one they started making into an actual movie. Good, it was my favorite anyway. Still creepy and certainly the most intiguing of the 3 stories that was made into shorts, although I'd love to see a Raqqa feature as well, those aliens looked funky as fuck.

Sword of the Stranger (Bluray): Samurai anime that's maybe a little too straightforward. Nothing too crazy happens so for an anime it's pretty tame, lol. It's good but unremarkable. There were a bunch of rave reviews on IMDB, which is why I bought it, but I don't see it. Like I said, nothing wrong with it, just unremarkable.
Blame! (Bluray): Glad some Netflix content makes it to bluray every now and then. I'd only seen this anime with the English dub because for some reason the person that ripped the version I saw previously didn't include Japanese and there wasn't another one available. Remedied that by buying it. This is more up my alley. Scifi bollocks about an AI city growing out of control for centuries and the struggle of the few remaining humans in it. Animated by Polygon studios, that also did that Knights of Sidonia show. They have a really nice cell shaded animation style which I like.
Mirai (Download): This was an oscar contender this year and I'm not sure I'd still would've given it to Spiderman if I'd watched this earlier. Mmmh, I probably would have, Spidey is great and looks different. This one looks like a handdrawn anime, but a great one. It starts with this opening pan of a town and it is without a doubt the single most detailed city scape I've ever seen in an animated movie. The rest of it is a heartwarming story about a young boy that for some reason visits his family members throughout the generations. It's all connected to this tree in their garden, all very esotherical, but very sweet and hilarious in places. The behavious of the kid is so recognisable and the animation is so cute, you can't help but laugh.
Afro Samurai: Resurrecion (DVD): Looks great, great designs, great animation but without fault these movies put me to sleep along the way. I watched the first one a while ago, forgot to watch the sequel until now. Maybe I'm watching them at the wrong time but somewhere along the way, amidst all the chaos, I nod off, every single time!

Alien: Covenant:One cool thing: You do the blowing, I'll do the fingering? That line could be a hidden message from Ridley Scott to the whiny fans bitching about not enough aliens (in the previous movie "Promethius"). Thanks to them, he was pretty much forced to alter his vision and the direction he wanted to take the franchise (in order to appease fans). In either case, you could see his heart wasn't in it, since the movie turned out so bad even compared to his other recent works.

Free Solo (Download): Won best documentary at the oscars this year. Wouldn't say it's a great documentary specifically but the feat of climbing El Capitan ropeless is pretty spectacular in and of itself and those final 20 minutes are well worth seeing.

The Big Short (Bluray): I wanna thank Kevin Smith for recommending this movie. It would've passed me by completely until he mentioned it in some podcast some time ago. I downloaded it, watched it, bought it, watched it a few more time. Must be on my 5th viewing by now or something, quite a feat when you realize I only got this late 2017 and there aren't many movies I manage to watch even more than twice nowadays with this massive collection that shows no signs of getting smaller anytime soon...
Eureka Seven - The Movie: Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers (Bluray): Anime, related to that other Eureka Seven movie I watched a few weeks ago. That is to say, it has the same characters and the same basic setting but the story is completely different. What it does have in common is that it's hard to follow but unlike the other one, I did start to lose interest in it along the way. The other one's animation is much better. This dates from that time when anime was going through a rough patch, simplifying the designs and use of contrast too much. Luckily they've come back from that in a big way.
Martyrs (Bluray): The point where a typical American horror would've ended is only the halfway point in this movie, lol, that's probably the best way to describe this violent insanity. It's probably the flagship movie from the nouvelle vague of French horror which also includes genre classics like Frontières, á l'Intérieur and Haute Tension. It had been a while since I last saw it, on DVD, but it holds up. Even after almost a decade, it's still fucked up.
Slaughterhouse Rulez (Download): Mixed reviews and the fact I hadn't even heard of the movie beforehand made me start watching with quite low expectation but I can saw I quite liked this one. I had no idea what it was going to be about, I noticed Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the cast, but no Edgar Wright, though some people mentioned the Cornetto trilogy in their reviews. I'd say it's an unofficial entry, they're in it but they're in no way the main characters. It's about this private school in the UK countryside that has fracking going on nearby with some unexpected results. I won't spoil what those results are but you'll know why I liked this movie once you see them...

Captain Marvel - Saw it and liked it a lot, not sure why it's getting so much hate. There were some parts that reminded me of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, it even had a few characters from it. I think these guys should direct GotG Vol. 3 as well.

I think these guys should direct GotG Vol. 3 as well. Its this weird dogpile mentality. I saw a teaser for it and was like "yawn another superhero flick" then I looked on youtube and apparently its an "anti-male SJW movie that nobody should watch" whatever that means. I guess because there is a girl in it.

Stan Lee's cameo was awesome, I won't spoil it and also don't look it up if you don't want it spoiled. I loved the reference they made, very unexpected.
As for the whole thing about it being hated for having a very strong female lead, that could be what it is. The main character is very powerful but it also has some very strong male and other strong female characters as well. Many of the negative reviews I've seen are critical of Brie Larson's acting, but I thought she did a good job, seems like she took the role seriously. Brie Larson is a very good actress IMO.
*edit* As far as Marvel movies go, this one may not be one of the absolute best but I still enjoyed it a lot, and it's also pretty big in scope. Also there's a scene from Avengers Endgame during the credits.

Also wanted to mention, I decided to watch Christopher Robin on Netflix.
Definitely a family and kids movie, but I was impressed with the CGI on the stuffed animals. It was a good movie overall too.
