Ugh, how did they manage to make Doom be not fun anymore?
I started playing Doom Eternal after completing Doom 2016 a few weeks ago. Back then I was already thinking: "I'm not liking this as much as I think I would." and after completing everything in the single player campaign (secrets/goals) I found it hard to get back to it. There was the arcade mode, of which I played 2 levels, achieving gold but finding little incentive to keep going. Didn't care about the standings even though that was the reason why I played Bulletstorm for as long as I did, always getting a little higher. It just wasn't that much fun and the less said about the classic levels the better. I completed like half of those before getting so tired of running into pinkies and running out of ammo. You can't replace the enemies like for like if the new enemies behave completely differently in their new form.
On to Doom Eternal... ...a few levels in I started asking myself: "When did Doom turn into a platform game?" It's as much Mirror's Edge as it is a shooter now, with annoying jumping puzzles littered everywhere and not an enemy in sight. But when those show up, it isn't necessarily better. It's always complete chaos and I just don't like that (anymore). There no spot to catch your breath, you're always running out of ammo, out of health, everyone is gunning for you incessantly, there no chance to avoid anything because the arenas are quite small and there's shit flying around all over the place all the time. It's a nightmare.

In that case, I should probably check out Doom Eternal.
tbh, I thought Doom was super cool when it first came out. But the alure of the 3D graphics quickly wore off and simply running around mazes shooting things got boring to me. A FPS game needs more, like a story and/or puzzles, to hold my attention.

It's a nightmare. The biggest issue with Doom Eternal seems to be the platforming. Love it or hate it. I found it annoying but not enough to hate the game. Doom Eternal is one of my favorite games of all time. The ammo upgrades help but the low ammo is on purpose to force you to switch guns. There is a Backpack mod that doubles your ammo just like the backpack in the OG Doom games. www.nexusmods.com/doometernal/mods/71There is a very active Doom Eternal modding community, that is the reason we got a round based survival mode from Id software, because the community made an amazing mod doing the same thing.

Doom Eternal is one of the best games I have ever played and if you get all the DLC there is a ton of content. The biggest issue for most people is that the very last boss of the last DLC isn't very challenging unless you play on the absolutely highest difficulty. The 1st DLC was way harder then the base game which turned people off, they over-corrected for the 2nd DLC and its not as hard as the 1st DLC. Both DLC are amazing. I've played through the whole game+DLC twice now. On really cool thing about Doom Eternal is Id Software actually cares about optimization so the game will run on anything. It is heavily multi-threaded. The game doesn't even have a "main" thread. Just "jobs" any CPU core can do.

This mod looks cool, it replaces the Horde mode with true random encounters, you start with all weapons. www.nexusmods.com/doometernal/mods/1049The OG Doom/Doom 2 actually have a crazy active mod scene that created so many cool endless modes and things. You can hardly believe some of the games are Doom when you play.

I really dislike being dropped into too small an arena with too much shit going on all at once. You have all this gear but you forget to use almost all of it because you're constantly running and gunning just to stay alive, hoping to be able to glory kill enough of the smaller fuckers for just a little more HP and not kill them outright. I just got through an arena that was considerably bigger, where you would unleash a few demons at a time as you opened columns, that was enjoyable. You had some time to figure out the best way to get rid of them instead of just blind-firing whatever you're holding because you're surrounded wherever you run to...

On Epic there is a free game called Industria this week. It is about 4-5 hours and is a story based FPS. Looks very dark and weird. Right up my alley. Another game on my backlog...

I saw the update on Steam but haven't downloaded it yet, just had a feeling about my current mods. Definitely blocking that update now.
*edit* Wow turns out that Steam doesn't let you run games that have updates pending. That sucks.

^OK so I decided to let it update, ran the game and to my surprise everything works. I have some mods that add more stuff to building crafting, like new pieces and clear glass stuff so it's surprising that stuff still works. Other mods I have are ENB Pilgrim and a few mods that add a lot more trees/grass/etc to the whole map.
Actually don't have any mods that require the script extender, so that could be why mine didn't break. Right away I noticed there's a new quest.
Here's all the mods I have currently, thought I'd remembered having more.
*edit* Looks like Pilgrim ENB has since been updated, might have to check it out later on.

I use a shitload of mods so when I load the game I get a gray screen and it even warns me not to load the game.
The mods I use are dependent on the Fallout Script Extender which allows way more complicated mods.
Also Pilgrim is toned waaaaay down from how it used to look due to the team that made it having some kinda drama and splitting up. I had to search the internet and find an archived old version of Pilgrim with the black Dogmeat Darkmeat that you are using. They removed that from the mod.
I stopped using everything besides Darkmeat in that mod. I use darker nights and its fun walking around in the dark with dog being pitch black
Also I use multiple followers mod so I always have the robot, the dog, and sometimes Nick Valentine depending on the quest. Makes the game easier for sure so I play on the hardest difficulty.

Thanks, I'm checking that one out... Turns out I already have a bunch of (free) games sitting there that I'd forgotten all about, among which is Fallout New Vegas. I'd been thinking about playing Fallout 3 (also already purchased years ago on Steam) after seeing the series, didn't realise I had more than one of them already...

Shroud is playing Fallout 3 right now, he is doing Operation Anchorage.......which looks nothing like Anchorage does IRL lol If you never played Fallout 3 or New Vegas then I highly recommend a Tale of Two Wastelands. It updates FO3 to the NV engine and combines both games into one. Wabajack is a program that downloads complete modsets at once. There are two modsets for NV/TTW www.wabbajack.org/gallery?selectedGame=Fallout%20New%20VegasJust download wabbajack, pick a modlist, and go. Fallout 4 Anomaly seems cool, combining Fallout 4 and STALKER. I remember playing Fallout 2 in like 1998 and people being like "wow that game sounds crazy weird". Now it has its own TV show and is the dictionary definition of mainstream gaming

I finally tried Portal RTX on the 4080S.
On my 2070S I was getting like 20-30 I think with default settings, I didn't have the Frame Gen mod at the time. Now I am getting 100 fps with DLSS Quality + Frame Gen. I changed a few settings above max that let you. I finally got far enough where you could see the bouncing balls and holy shit they look cool.
The 4080S is rated for 320 watts I think, Portal RTX makes it pull 300-315.
Also I was pissed I couldn't enable the Developer Commentary because I haven't finished the game, I finished Portal 15+ years ago, not looking forward to doing it again just for commentary.
Found out if you enable the Dev Console and put in "sv_unlockedchapters 999" then you can start a new game with Commentary on

Oh yeah the building where ID software's original office was (Town East Tower 5) isn't too far from where I live, they've had their own building for a long time in Richardson now though. There's actually a lot of tech stuff around this area (Dallas/Fort Worth).

I just played and completed that free Epic Industria game in roughly 4 hours. Exactly what I needed after another frustrating Doom Eternal session earlier tonight. Very Half-Life 2 in look and feel. I really liked it and I wouldn't have minded if it had been twice as long. Died twice at what turned out to be the final battle after my gamer instincts told me everything had to die but apparently that was never going to work. Pretty sure they were going to keep coming until I ran out of health and bullets. 3rd time I just legged it and made it without any trouble, doh! First game I actually installed and played on Epic. Can't say I'm a big fan of their GUI...

I haven't played Dragon Age Origins in something like 10 years? Not sure.
Only have it on Origin, which is now the EA App.
EA App is very refined compared to how Origin was. Installed in a breeze. So weird not having any savegames or logged playtime since I put at least 150 hours into DAO at an absolute minimum. Last time I played they didn't log any of that.
Anyway, I fired it up with no mods. Maxed the graphics, 8x AA, and did a Dwarf noble origin so I would go to the dwarven city, the only playthrough I never did since I prefer mage.
Game looked amazing. Hitting my 357 fps limit, wonder how high it would be unlimited. RTX HDR looking great.
........then I went into the Deep Roads and all the lights and shadows started flashing and such. Looked terrible. I killed a Darkspawn and it left a giant square of blood LOL. Looked ridiculous.
I never actually finished DAO unmodded.
Certain mods absolutely tanked FPS on systems back in the day. I know DAO was the first major AAA game released by a studio that needed a quad core processor to play smooth. I remember my first quad core made such a difference but would still bog down with certain mods.
Oh yeah, the "arena" the the dwaft city had fake cutout spectators. Looked ridiculous. Pretty decent for 2009 I guess tho.

I played Dwarf Noble far enough to get to right before you go to the tower in Ostagar {CLICK FOR SPOILER}I knew Bhelen was a evil monster but damn, what a prick. It makes picking him terrible because he is better for the dwarves even if he is a dick

I set down Alan Wake 2 pretty close to the beginning. I just wasn't feeling the whole detective aspect, went and played FF7 Remake instead.
Played it a bit tonight, I think I am going to finish it.
Also I downloaded The Outer Worlds........it didn't save my games doh. I forgot Epic didn't have cloud saves back in 2019, I only finished the game once and didn't even realize there was any DLC.
Apparently they released a "light remaster" in 2023 that improves a lot about the graphics. Just one of those games I kinda forgot existed.

Also looks like it didn't make back its budget since released. They should release it on Steam, it will make a lot more there.
