Ok so the AVRs have ever so little more bottom ooomph for the 558 but it's still muddy undefined bass that clearly rolls off earlier than the ear buds so even though they aren't 300 ohm they do appear to have a little more bottom authority using the AVRs headphone output over the Dragonfly and I don't have to boost the bass as much. Not super surprised and it's not nowhere near enough difference to be worth spending money on though since I'm still not happy with the end result...I'm clearly due for a headphone upgrade. Since you have both the HD6XX/K7XX which one would you say goes deeper before rolling off the map? They are both rated down to 10 hz I prefer the bass response on the 6XX tho like I said I am biased towards the Sennheiser house sound and I openly admit it. If you remember Indolentron/Robotov from old school SCMB he gave the 6XX away to a friend cuz he prefers his AKG 702s or whatever it is he owns.

So after months of waiting my delayed Tin Audio T3s finally came: www.massdrop.com/buy/tin-audio-t3-iemDue to the delay they gave everyone in the drop extra tips. So including the ones on the IEMs it came with 20 tips of all sizes and materials. Pretty nuts. I haven't had much time to dick around with them and I have only used the default tips but so far they sound a bit better then the MassDrop EDCs I have been using. That said tho they sit on your ear in a weird way and I prefer the fit of the EDCs. Not even a contest really. The next test I am going to need to take them out on a long bike ride or a hike or something.

I have in my hand right now a brand new set of Beyerdynamic DT770 Studio Headphones 80 Ohm versions. I tried them briefly in the parking lot of the store and a smartphone definitely can't drive them well, lol, gonna try my AVR for now and order a DAC/Amp later. I went to Magnolia afterwards to try some headphones and boy did their lineup really dwindle since I got my 558s from the same store....all low end Sennheisers and not much that stuck out soundwise. I listened to my first noise cancellation headphones and what a weird experience. Even in a loud and crowded store with no music playing on the headphones you hear nothing, dead silence, just like being deaf, and then you take them off and all the ambient noise floods back into your ears, lol. I don't think I'd want to drown out THAT much background noise because I would like to hear if someone is breaking into my house, heh.

They'll block the jet engine noise making it easier to catch some z's. Also, if the plane goes down in a fiery crash and you're asleep while wearing those headphones, you could be blissfully ignorant of those final moments of hysteria and unwanted suffering.

I have in my hand right now a brand new set of Beyerdynamic DT770 Studio Headphones 80 Ohm versions. I can't believe you paid money for that trash. What a n00b. Build quality feels much better then the Sennheisers. They have weight and built with metal and just holding them in your hand they feel much more premium. Comfort is a tossup, both are about equal and some of the most comfortable headphones that I've ever put on my head except the head pad and ear cups "feel" more premium on the Beyerdynamic where the Sennheisers feel like they're using the cheapest of foam like a cheap Walmart couch compared to a premium couch from a dedicated furniture store. Sound quality like comfort is a toss-up but since these don't really have much better bass and still need EQ to perform I think I might steer towards open back for the less constrained sound even though reviews say that the DT 770 has some of the better soundstage for closed backs you can tell the difference between closed back (slightly claustrophobic/constrained?) and the openness and largeness of the sound of the open back, especially in the midrange - bass suck on both and need boosting. I think that I'll go with the dedicated headphone Amp and Dac just for the piece of mind that its not a problem. I'll go with the Atom based on your recommendation but what about Dac? Something that obviously doesn't have a problem running from a Windows PC. I might even order the 6xx just out of curiosity.

Ninja the biggest twitch streamer uses them. For a DAC I would recommend the Grace Designs SDAC but the drop isn't on right now. Schiit just updated their Modi DAC to the Modi 3 and it measures really well. Can't go wrong for $99 and an American company in case you need tech support: www.schiit.com/products/modi-1If you wanna save a bit more and you have amazon prime can also getting a Topping DAC for cheap: www.amazon.com/TOPPING-es9018k2m-opa2134-Decoder-Amplifier/dp/B07B46KQVP

The Atom is one of the best measuring and powerful amps you can get, better then Schiit for sure. It slays everyone at $99. It probably measures better then my amp but I'm happy with mine.

Yes! And I don't think I'll be needing to try too many more headphones - these DT 770's really bring on the sub-bass!
I think the research I did on the headphones paid off...I like V curves and sub bass and in the review below he says that the DT 770 80ohm has the best bass response of the other 770 versions (32 Ohm, 250 Ohm, etc) and also the higher end Beyerdynamics plus he states that they're some of the best soundstaging closed back headphones so it's kinda like having the best of both worlds headphones although at first the lack of hearing the ambient sounds around you like with the open backs made it seem kinda claustrophobic, I'm already used to it....
I really don't think Sennhieser is my cup of tea, I run into more and more reviews that describe them as a more midrange-y headphone that doesn't really do sub bass. I'm really liking the deep sub bass punch of these Beyerdynamics! I think I chose well based on research and end result for what I was looking for! I think the AKG 712 Pro would be to my liking based on research although I'm more curious on trying a tube amp over different headphones. I gotta poop, peace out!!~~

If you are interested in a tube amp be careful. You are using 80 ohm headphones and a lot of tube amps don't work right with headphones that efficient. I'm not an electrical engineer or anything but you need to check specifically if the tube amp you are going to get will work with headphones you have. IMO any tube amp you get would be a downgrade over the atom.

Found a much better EQ program than Equalizer Pro, Equalizer APO: sourceforge.net/projects/equalizerapo/ It's so much better and allows me to bring out even more from the DT 770s not to mention its free and not payware (I paid for two keys for EQ Pro but it's really kinda crappy compared to the freeware EQ APO and that damned payware program blocked my one key because I reinstalled it a couple times, grrr). But yea I'm not a purist, I have to have it sound just like I want it to and not what someone else or some companies house sound sounds like. I don't think there's an audio product out there that I would be 100% happy with just the out of the box sound, I need to put my finishing touch on the sound. The DT 770s are very capable, the sub bass...man...does it thunder with authority with some gentle tweaking....love it..... Although I would rather to not have to touch EQs or Tone Controls and have something sound just like I would want right out of the box, I don't really worry too much about the default sound of products but more so of its 'capability'....like even with tweaks, my old headphones can't touch these 770s in sub bass because there is none, lol, I can try to boost and tweak all day long but they just lack the capability to get much of anything from them. I try to research and get as close as possible to what I would like right out of the box and then take it from there, I really believe I chose wisely on these cans based on what I like and the capability with tweaking that they provide me. What I'm liking right now with EQ APO is that a little problem I was having with EQ Pro trying to bring out and give the sub bass more authority in the process made the normal and mid bass too bloomy/bloated/unclear/fuzzy and with EQ APO I'm able to bring out even more deeper sub bass with even more authority while keeping the normal and mid bass clean and clear...even cleaner than the default untouched sound...because the app gives you more control over more bands. Yea this little setup I got going here has some great capability after tweaking. Love it, can't stop listening to music....just the way I want it to sound. Just discovered Billie Eilish and can't stop listening to her...I like how her album 'dont smile at me' is almost like one continuous dreamy song that just changes choruses kinda like Pink Floyd The Wall plays out more like one continuous track....I'm bad at describing things but I'm sure you get my point, lol. I also had to switch from optical output to USB because for some strange reason I was getting random clicking, cut outs, and skips when pressing the mouse buttons or keyboard keys, strange (had the same problem with the optical out to my AVR before I got the Modi so it's not the Modi's fault). USB sound doesn't seem to be effected.
Ok some complaints with the Modi 3 and Atom. When using the wall power on the Modi the overly bright light on the front stays on unless you unplug it. Not an issue now with using USB sound because it gets powered from the USB output in USB mode and powers off with the computer. I'm not a fan of lit up stereo gear anymore and I have my display disabled on my Denon X4000 and the power light on my Emotiva XPA-5 covered with black tape, lol. My complaint with the Atom is how close the headphone jack and volume control is. I would put the headphone jack at one extreme end and the volume control at the other extreme end because how close they are you seem to touch the headphone jack a lot grabbing for the volume knob. It also feels like a cheap product, very plasticy. The Modi appears to be brushed aluminum and feels and looks more premium. Well that's it for tonight's rant, no time for even a fap-a-rooni....lol...gotta jet....peace out@!!!!~~

I put electrical tape on the lights on my audio gear. You can see it in my old setup in my signature(I don't even use that DAC or amp anymore lol) Also if you want a tube amp you could go all the way and get this monstrosity: www.massdrop.com/buy/la-figaro-339-tube-headphone-amplifierThe cool thing is you can use it to fight off someone who breaks into your house, you could also put it in the trunk of your car in the winter for better traction on snow and ice.

I really like how dead silent this DAC/AMP setup is! Like no noise what-so-ever! Turn the volume all the way up with nothing playing and it's 100% dead silent, like nothing, the most silent audio gear that I've ever owned! And my couple weeks of research really paid off....these headphones turned out to be exactly what I was looking for! Who would of thought? Studio headphones from Guitar Center, lol. Really great sub-bass punch just like I was looking for and absolutely crystal clear! They're really good! Sitting here listening to them with a smile on my face! And I'm a tough cookie to get a smile out of anymore so that says a lot! Really happy with these headphones with the AMP and DAC! Glad I just didn't jump on the Sennheiser bandwagon again and did some deep research, heh. Thanks for the DAC and AMP suggestion, very happy with them but......those damned overhyped Sennheisers, lol...
Looks like I'm not the only one unimpressed with Sennhieser:

Different people have different tastes for sure. When I got my Audeze LCD-2s all my other headphones sat and did nothing for months. Eventually I kinda got sick of how heavy they are and went back to the 6XX. Best practices is hearing stuff yourself and not relying on internet reviews of course but that is not realistic for everything.

Ugh I missed this drop last year. I don't have a tube amp at all and this would compliment my Gilmore Lite mk2 nicely. However I don't really need it so I think I am gonna pass. People rave about the thing but I don't think I'm going to spend the $400 drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-eddie-current-zdt-jr

I'm going to get crucified and barbecued to the audiophile cross for bringing this idea up but with the threat of smartphones doing away with headphone jacks all together and the fact that some activities and chores I do the wire snags and pulls a earbud out of my ear or gets in the way I've started researching wireless bluetooth earbuds and headphones. Might just wait until next gen to lessen the loss of audio quality as the tech overall improves and more of the downsides get ironed out. Some of the quality buds look ridiculous how large and far out of your ear they stick out, might as well just get full size headphones at that point, lol.

The only thing wrong with bluetooth for mobile use is the quality loss and having another damn thing to charge, plus easier to lose with no cord. The first generation airpods are already losing their ability to charge meanwhile I have pairs of headphones over 10 years old. For home use the DAC/AMP is all in the headphone so it removes the ability to swap gear.

My last day at work set a reminder for the important stuff:

|
Post by Emig5m on Jul 20, 2019 2:47:38 GMT -5
I definitely want a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones because working today with my wired buds I pulled the cord out of my phone, pulled a bud out of my ear, and snagged the wire on various things more than a handful of times and it was very annoying. Any wireless in ear buds that seems worthy are so big and stick out so far that they look goofy as hell I think I you might as well just get full size with noise cancellation at that point. I notice battery life is normally twice as long or more with full size plus there should be more room for better amp and circuitry. Yea bluetooth connection scares me and makes me wonder why they don't make audiophile wireless headphones that use and stream lossless over wi-fi connection? Or has the latest versions of bluetooth closed the sound quality gap? Wired definitely sucks for when doing a lot of physical activity!

Another thing with bluetooth is the audio codec. You can pick a ton of different options but it might default to SBC which is the lowest quality. You don't have to worry about any of that with cords.

I only tried the full size ones as of now but so far I like them running off my S10 Wirelessly better than my Modi3/Atom/DT770 Pro 80 Ohm. Amazing how tech keeps advancing.... Left the phone in the bedroom and walked from room to room and didn't experience any problems. Goodbye snagging wires and wire constraints! The noise cancellation is great and added bonus and really helps hear fine detail in noisier environments. 30 continuous hours on a full charge. Been listening to music for an hour and the battery is still at full charge. Boy where my old Sennhieser HD-558s really shit headphones.....these are a huge upgrade over those! Audiophiles, don't let bluetooth scare you away anymore....the future is here! Probably keep the full size for home use and the in ear ones (if I like them) for work and out and about....

So I started a new job and have been using my Mass Drop EDC to go walk around the city on my lunch breaks, I left them in my pants and washed them. Figured I would need new ear buds(side note this right here is why I don't own expensive ear buds, I always lose them/fuck them up). Imagine my surprise when they came out of the dryer completely fine. Not a mark on them. Would highly recommend them based off that alone: drop.com/buy/massdrop-x-nuforce-edc-in-ear-monitors
