Leon - The Professional (Bluray): One of the greats. No matter how often I see this movie (but it had been a while to be honest), it's always great. Natalie Portman is amazing, Gary Oldman and Jean Reno are great too, the music, everything just seems to work. Great fucking movie.
The Neon Demon (Bluray): Now this is something I hate, not the art-wank filled with unsympathetic character which is the movie, that I already knew, but the fact you can't turn off the subtitles on this bluray. You have to choose from the menu English with Dutch or French subs or French dub, which isn't that uncommon over here, but then usually it lets you turn them off manually from the PS3 triangle button menu, now that option was greyed out. Why? What's to gain from this? Anyway, back to the movie. Hated it when I first saw it but had been wanting to give it a second chance, which came when I found it pretty cheap and I'm glad I did because bearing in mind it is what it is, it became a lot more tolerable and I found it easier to concentrate on the good, like the music, which is amazing, and the visuals.
What We Do in the Shadows (Download): Another one I gave a second chance, almost solely based on Thor Ragnarok. First time I tried watching this I didn't even make it to the opening credits. It couldn't keep me awake and nothing I saw wanted me to go back to it so eventually I just deleted the file. After Thor I became interested again. While I still don't think it's the comedic masterpiece some claim it to be, I found it at least amusing enough to make it through, with eventually a few laughs, mostly because of the werewolves (we're werewolves, not swearwolves). Another one I'm glad to have given another chance.

Natalie Portman is amazing, Gary Oldman and Jean Reno are great too, the music, everything just seems to work. Great fucking movie. When Portman fakes being a delivery person, and Oldman catches her, he said something about "Italian takeout". Did Portman inadvertently make him think Sal had arranged a hit on him? Sal caught a beat down. Besson also produced/directed The Fifth Element and I think there's at least two tips of the hat to his movie The Professional in it. One is when Oldman returns to the spaceship and says "I know that music" when he hears gunfire and then says "It's time to change the beat". In The Professional Oldman loved his music, and it was connected to his violence. Him getting blown up is very similar in both movies. In The Fifth Element it's almost like he's remembering a past life on seeing the bomb seconds before it's to go off.

Deadpool 2 (Download): This was some kind or other extended cut, which included an extra fight scene where he takes on Yakuza. Pretty sure I never saw that before and it was pretty hilarious, have to make sure when I buy it I get that version. The kids liked it too, why wouldn't they? Holy shitballs, oh holy shitballs! I loved the credits in the beginning! "Written by the assholes who killed the dog in John Wick", lol.

I haven't seen The Professional in years but I remember it being a great movie, Gary Oldman was great as an unhinged and corrupt cop. Deadpool 2 I very much enjoyed, as much as the first one. Also had some great cameos, that scene where those 2 rednecks are talking about wet wipes vs toilet paper, that was Matt Damon and Alan Tudyk. The latter was easy to recognize, but Matt Damon had a lot of makeup and stuff on, so it was hard to tell it was him. Just watched Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It got very middling reviews, but I didn't think it was bad, enjoyed watching it. The plot did remind me a lot of The Lost World: Jurassic Park though. {CLICK FOR SPOILER} The part where the Brachiosaurus dies while they're watching from the boat was very sad.

Mandy (Download): The new movie by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) is another strange trip into his multicoloured world, but unlike Black Rainbow, it's a little more accessible to regular folk. They'll still have to make it through the first half hour or so, though, which is all kinds of slow and trippy, but after that it becomes a revenge movie, though still very, very trippy and strange, but there's a chainsaw fight. I liked Black Rainbow for its visuals and sounds but it was incredibly slow, this has a bit more pace, especially in the second half, while still having the same kind of sounds and sights. The plot? Jesus freaks kill Nic Cage's wife, he goes and kills them. Linus Roache as the ring leader is great, as is Nic Cage. You'll see some more familiar faces along the way. I recommend it.
Hanna (Bluray): Another one I decided to give another chance after downloading it years ago and not being that impressed, except for the music, which is by the Chemical Brothers. Liked it well enough this time around, not more to say.
Wrong (Bluray): It's absurd, which is a compliment. Not as crazy as Rubber but it's neat to take a peak into Mr Oizo's crazy mind.
Ultramarines - Warhammer 40K (Download): Because I'd just completed the Space Marine game again. I like the visual style of the Warhammer 40K universe, that Roman Gothic scifi-mix but this animated movie could've used a bigger budget, the cutscenes from the game aren't much worse. Still, I like it well enough because I like the universe...

American Beauty (Bluray): I don't know it's a good thing or not when you notice you're starting to resemble Lester Burnham, but there I am. There's a difference though, I wouldn't pick Mena Suvari as my first choice, I'd go for Thora Birch every time. This movie is pretty strange though, watching it after Kevin Spacey's metoo troubles. Pretty sure you could cut a very funny and telling youtube video from this movie regarding his situation.
Possession (Bluray): Wasn't that cheap (€14) but I really wanted to watch this again. I remembered it to be all kinds of crazy and boy, I wasn't mistaken. Crazy it certainly was.
Space Truckers (Download): Enjoyable space romp with charming special FX (magical combination of practical and model work and early CGI, I love it). There were a few framerate issues here and there but considering my only other option is a non-anamorphic DVD, the good of this 9GB HD rip certainly outweighs the bad.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (Download): With the kid, just the oldest, the youngest apparently doesn't care about Star Wars anymore and decided watching random jackasses play games on youtube was more important. Fuck him, I guess, his loss, we saw a fun space adventure which, I feel, flopped for no good reason, except for maybe Star Wars fatigue.
Bright (Download): Another one I feel that was unfairly treated by the reviewers. It got incredibly low scores but I can't see anything really wrong with it. It's enjoyable and well made and I hope we ever get to see more.
Guardians of the Galaxy - Vol.2 3D (3D Bluray): One of the best 3D movies, just like the first. Got the house to myself this afternoon so I could crank my new amp all the way up. Now I'm glad I accidentally skipped it when I did a Marvel marathon a while back. I wouldn't have been able to experience it with the complete surround experience then.

Also you sure that he wasn't watching people play games on twitch not youtube?

I thought Solo was okay, I don't regret missing it at the theater but I thought it was a decent movie. Lando was perfect and Chewie was also great. There's also a surprise character who appears near the end of the movie. {CLICK FOR SPOILER} Darth Maul with robot legs, like he was in the Clone Wars animated series. Also they left it open for a sequel, which I wouldn't mind seeing.

Hold the Dark (Download): The new movie by Jeremy Saulnier got picked up by Netflix, which I hope doesn't mean it won't get released on bluray like so many of the other Netflix releases. Solid movie with some awesome scenes, but compared to the rest of his oeuvre it's nevertheless the one that I liked the least. That says more about the other movies than it does this one though. I'd still give it a solid recommendation. Reminded me a lot of Wind River (which, incidentally, I picked up bluray today).
Colossal (Bluray): Another solid flick with an interesting premise, some laughs, some drama and a few big monsters.
Personal Shopper (TV): Mysterious and intriguing flick about Kristin Stewart being an assistent to some snobby diva and in her free time she tries to make contact with her deceased brother. Strange melting pot of genres but a mysterious vibe throughout kept me glued to the screen. Like I'd read beforehand, the somewhat too open ending is a bit of a downer but it was really good up to that point, so...
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 3D (Download): Surprisingly entertaining. I'd feared the worst after hearing some reviews but I actually kinda liked it, for a large portion at least. Can you guess when it started losing me? Yeah, you're right, where it lost everyone else as well: after they get off the island and it turns into a haunted mansion movie with dinos. That entire second half was just silly. Entertaining still, but too silly when you start thinking about it. So far it ties with Lost World as my least favorite JP movie.

The Wall (Bluray): 90 minutes hiding from a sniper behind a brick wall in Iraq but Doug Lyman keeps it interesting.
Son of Saul (TV): Out of focus guided tour through a concentration camp seen over the shoulder of a guy called Saul, looking for a rabbi to bury a boy who may or may not be his son. Pretty powerful stuff as he ends up in just about every part of the camp and even though you only see snippets of what's going on over Saul's shoulders, you can hear everything and paint a pretty clear picture. Gripping movie.
Kaena: The Prophecy (Download/DVD): Even though this CGI movie never looked that great even back in the day and it certainly hasn't improved over time (or in HD), but I still like the design, colour and lighting. It looks about on par with a good current in-game cutscene but the European scifi feel of it all makes up for that, at least for me. Had been ages since I saw it but I'm glad to revisit it.
Manborg (Download): 60 minutes no-budget action-horror-nostalgia flick like for instance Kung Fury but it came way before and looks more amateur. That being said, they use their limitations well, with all kinds of neat stop-motion animation and a general videogame feel. In fact, it's a better Doom movie than the actual Doom movie. Charming.

The Predator (Theatre): And the quote of the year goes to: Thomas Jane in The Predator for: "Fuck me in the face with an aardvark." I lolled so hard at that one. Maybe it was lowered expectation because of the rather mediocre reviews for this movie, but I liked it, for the most part. The finale was kinda dumb (CGI predator, really?) but up to that point I enjoyed it a lot, especially the humor. Sure, the story makes no sense, the entire reasoning for the preds to be there is dumb, but I can only say I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

Wind River (Bluray): Solid flick.
Alien vs Predator (Bluray): Guys in suits make so much better Predators than CGI. At least in this movie they still saw it that way. In fact, it still has a good amount of practical stuff.
Alien vs Predator: Requiem (Bluray): It's official, Alien Covenant is worse than this. This makes more sense and the stupid characters are smarter than they are in Covenant. It's also a lot gorier than I remembered, if you can see it, that is, because the reports of this bluray being mastered too darkly are true. I like it dark but even I had to increase the gamma to make it watchable...
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (Bluray): Probably the bluray I've had the longest without actually watching it. Don't know why, it's a good movie which I've seen several times on DVD before but just never got around to watching the bluray.

Mom & Dad (Bluray): Fun horror romp in which some kind of unexplained virus compells parents to murder their children. Nic Cage goes insane, which is always entertaining and it doesn't outstay its welcome, clocking in at 90 minutes.
Await Further Instructions (Download): British psychological thriller in which a family gets locked up inside their own house by some unknown event. Through the TV they get instructions but tensions soon rise up inside the house. Could've been good and certainly starts interesting but slowly slides into silliness with an ending that would've been out of place in the '70s or '80s maybe, but now feels hopelessly dated, even though the movie only just came out.
Spoiler for those that want to know: it's the TV (an actual CRT TV) that tries to get people to worship it. If it had been up to date, it would've been cell phones, not some ancient CRT TV.
Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trickbaby (Download/DVD): Nice HD bluray rip that's infinitely better than the non-anamorphic DVD I've been watching up to this point. It's as fucked up as ever, no matter the resolution it's in.
Justice League 3D (3D Bluray): All the action is well done (except for the stuff on the Amazon's island, which looks very CG-ish), but the movie definately has problems in the story and pacing department. All this money and talent and 3 boxes and a generic bad guy is the best they can come up with for a story device?

Venom (Theatre): Mmmmh, okay, I guess. Certainly wasn't blown away by it but it had its charm in spite of some less than amazing CGI (don't feel like Spidey 3's Venom effects were worse and how long is that ago? Though I must admit I haven't compared them). Best thing about the movie was Tom Hardy, worst thing the convoluted plot. They had to give Venom a reason for being and without Spiderman/Peter Parker to fall back on, the attempt here was pretty weaksauce. Feels like a missed opportunity (again) but I certainly can't say I hated it either.
Funny thing to note: Tom Hardy and Logan Marshall-Green are often confused with one another. Recently Marshall Green was in a movie where he got a voice in his head and his body did things by itself (Upgrade), guess what happens to Hardy in this one?

I don't just have a backlog of unwatched blurays, I even have one of downloaded stuff.
22 July (Download): I had some sort of expectation when I started watching Paul Greengrass's Utoya movie but a lot of that got shattered when the first person in the movie opened his mouth and it became clear there would be no Norwegian spoken in this but they instead went the English-with-an-accent way. Unforgivable. They used Norwegian actors but had them speak English? Don't do that. As for the rest of the movie: I liked the opening and I liked the ending but the middle hour of this 2 hour and 20 minutes movie really dragged. I appreciate the movie got made but I won't ever watch it again. Here's hoping that other Utoya movie turns out better.
Harsh Times (Download): A movie I've never been able to track down on DVD back in the day or now on bluray. It's David Ayer at his best: LA crime drama. Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez are great as no good low lives looking for a job while drinking and doing drugs when every so often things turn violent.
Patlabor: The Next Generation - Tokyo War (Download): Patlabor, the first at least, is one of my favorite anime of all time and while this live action version of it certainly captures some of the look and the atmosphere, it just was too incomprehensible (iffy subtitles probably didn't help either). But the single biggest gripe is this: It's a 88-minute movie (without the credits) and the first Patlabor action isn't until 80 minutes in and even then they're pretty much just standing still on a bridge and within a minute of first appearing, 1 has already been destroyed. Now, Patlabor was never really about (robot-) action either, but it was at least about them.
I've also started watching the Netflix series Maniac, which seems promising, but I'm only 2 episodes in so far. I'll watch the rest tonight.

Maniac (Download): I liked it, reminded me of Legion and Dirk Gently, which I both liked as well. Was a lot shorter than I thought. Some of the 10 episodes were only barely 30 minutes long, but I don't mind. Better the perfect length for what they need to tell than including a bunch of filler, cfr the Boring Dead. It was weird seeing Jonah Hill so thin, but he did a good job. Loved the look of the series (futuristic '80s) and the funky story was right up my alley. I can imagine it isn't for everyone, like Legion and Dirk Gently, it has a certain feel to it, a feel that's a real turnoff for the dumb viewers, lol...
Apostle (Download): After a bunch of Indonesian flicks, Gareth Evans (The Raid) directs one in English, a Victorian horror starring Dan Stevens. It's long and quite slow, but atmospheric and mysterious. It's of the Wicker Man school: outsider arrives somewhere and immediately feels something is off. Something is definately off here but you'll have to wait for it. It gets bloodier as it goes on.

Your Name (Bluray): Waited too long to watch my download of it and now I did the same again with the bluray. It really is amazing.
Ant-Man and the Wasp 3D (Download): Enjoyable and fun but following something as amazing as the Avengers, it feels so lightweight.
Mississippi Burning (TV): They tried to show me this in school way back in the day when I had zero interest in stuff like this. Nowadays I can see how great it is, especially Gene Hackman who's charming and scary all at the same time. The subject is still in tune with current events even though the movie is from the '80s and plays in the '60s.

The Ritual (Download): Pretty good British horror flick. Group of friends go hiking in Sweden in rememberance of a friend that got killed during a mugging but when they decide to take a shortcut through the woods, things take a turn for the worse. At first it's a lot like Blair Witch but then it turns into a creature feature with a great looking creature to boot. I loved it.
Time Lapse (Bluray): One of my favorite time travel movies and also one of the downloaded movies I've had trouble replacing with a bluray. I ended up with a French bluray in the end, but at least I've got it.
The Night Comes for Us (Download): Probably the most violent, brutal and bloody martial arts movie I've ever seen. It's a new Indonesian one with Iko Uwais of the Raid fame. The story is serviceable but it's the fights that steal the show. I wasn't exaggerating when I said it's probably the most violent and bloody movie I've ever seen. Every fight has people getting cut, sliced and beat up in the most horrific ways and it's all shown in gory detail. And it's relentless too, it just keeps going. Takes something like 45 minutes to take a break from the constant fighting, slower middle section, followed by another 45 minutes of fighting. I was expecting a martial arts movie, but no way I was expecting this level of blood and gore. Needless to say I loved it.

Iron Fist - Season 1 (Bluray): I wasn't the biggest fan when I first saw this, nobody was, but for completion's sake I decided to buy it anyway, and rewatch it too, in preparation for season 2. Turns out I liked it better than I remembered, though it could have been a bit shorter than 13 episodes, 10 would've been better (and I've noticed they did exactly that for season 2) I've also noticed (because I didn't really remember the storyline) instead of following this up with season 2, I need to follow it up with The Defenders to conclude the Hand-story arc. That hasn't come out yet on bluray however but since I can't wait for that, being in the groove now, I've decided to redownload so I can keep this momentum going. That's only 8 episodes so it should be a breeze (though I also remember not being the greatest fan of that either)...

The Thaw/Frozen (Bluray): Have this on DVD as The Thaw but this bluray insists on being called Frozen (even the on-screen title claims as much), which is weird because they are the complete opposite of one another. Anyways, neat creature feature about these pre-historic bugs that get released in a remote arctic outpost after a polar bear starts snacking on a preserved woolly mammoth that emerged from a melting glacier. Reasonably good FX and interesting ideas, good gore and an ecological message that's as up-to-date as ever.
Identity (Bluray): Had been years since I saw this, one of the original twist ending horror-thrillers, and it aged well. Pretty impressive cast by today's standards and I only now found out it was actually directed by James Mangold who went on to do some really big movies.

Watched The Incredibles 2 today, thought it was pretty good. It took 14 years for them to make it, but it picks up right where the first one ended. Also Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks are in it, they respectively play Saul and Mike in Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul.

What Happened to Monday (Bluray): This high concept dystopian scifi was better than I remembered. Glad I ended up buying it even though for some reason I thought I didn't particulary like it...
Rogue (Download/DVD): As far as killer croc movies go, this is the one to watch.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (Bluray): Good courtroom drama and good horror flick. That exorcism scene still gives me the chills.
The Shallows (Bluray): Looks great and as far as limited location survival horrors go, it's not the worst either. It's just the ending that's pretty dumb (and incidentally just about identical to the one in Rogue, but it's a little more believable there).

Making a Murderer - Season 1 (Download): I noticed a second season came out but I wanted to refresh my memory by rewatching all 10 hours of the first season beforehand. Did that over the course of a few days and now I'm ready to punch each and everyone of those Manitowoc cops in the face again. Is Steven Avery the murderer? I doubt it, lack of motive and too many coincidences with the 'evidence'. Did Brendan Dassey have anything to do with it? Not at all, his only crime is being so stupid that telling the investigators what he thought they wanted to hear would mean he could get out of there to go watch wrestling...

I have not seen Making a Murderer. That being said documentary film makers make their own narrative and who knows what kind of evidence they are withholding or exaggerating in shaping that narrative. I remember in the late 1990s a ton of people were convinced Michael Jackson was a child molester but now the common wisdom seems to be he was a victim of scammers and just being weird.
