decider.com/2017/04/10/people-hate-netflixs-new-ratings-system/Netflix changed their rating system to a simple like or dislike system, apparently due to bad reviews of their own content. The last thing that got extremely negative reviews was an Amy Schumer standup special, and after hearing about how bad it was I tried watching it out of curiosity. It was so bad, it made me cancel my Netflix subscription... Just a bunch of fart, sh*t, and sex jokes that weren't even funny. I couldn't make it past the first minute so I skipped to different parts througout, it was all the same no matter where I skipped to. I was wondering why Netflix changed their rating system all of a sudden, if this is why then I do not want to give them my money anymore. They got rid of lots of good stuff, and most of their own content is garbage, very little is actually good. Signed up for HBO Now a few days ago, it's free for a month and then $16 per month if I keep it. I watched the entire first season of Silicon Valley again and laughed my ass off just like I did the first time I saw it. I might keep it after the free month is over, but I think I'm done with Netflix. Anyone ever used Amazon's streaming service? Any good? *edit* I'm gonna try the 30-day trial.

I haven't had netflix in years. Back when I had it in like 2011 the "foreign" category was basically code for softcore porn

I've never had it and probably never will. I don't like paying for services, I'd rather pay for goods. I like to watch and rewatch and you only have a collection on Netflix as long as you keep paying and as long as they decide to keep a particular movie or series available. I'll stick to the try (download) before I buy method I've been using for a few years now... ...and, you know, as long as there are still physical media available, of course.

I might keep Amazon Prime and get one of those Fire TV devices. Seems like it's actually a pretty good deal and I like how they have it set up. $99 a year for the basic plan and you can add channels to it, including HBO and Showtime among others. I'd probably just get HBO and AMC.

And, I got 6 months of Netflix for free when I bought a new phone, at least I'll be able to watch the second seasons of F is for Family and Stranger Things. I have a feeling F is for Family season 2 will not be good but definitely looking forward to Stranger Things.

I liked the first season, it had some very funny moments and I liked how it made fun of lots of things from the 70's. I'm hoping the second season will be just as good but I found the trailer kind of underwhelming. I just hope they don't rely on raunchiness.

Amazon doesn't seem to have much content compared to Netflix. The "free 2 day shipping" thing is nice. When it works. More and more 2 days turns into 5, but hey, it is free. We cancelled our DirecTV and subscribed to Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. Hulu gets used the most by far, Netflix second and Amazon in distant third.
Firesticks are great for Kodi. You know, if pirate streaming servers from Argentina are your thing.

Amazon doesn't seem to have much content compared to Netflix. The "free 2 day shipping" thing is nice. When it works. Lol, I've had things delivered in 1 day before. They have maybe only once gone 3 days. Perks of living 30 minutes away from a major amazon hub. Also to add to the discussion, I still really like netflix. Quality is always good and there's more content than I can watch. My favorite is through a Plex server that a friend runs. Terabytes upon terabytes of movies and tv shows. He even has a website to put requests in so I can watch anything. It's pirating without the risk! I just connect to his server through plex and it encodes all the data and allows me to stream it. He's got google fiber, I'll have to ask him how much data he pushes through every month, I believe he has at least 20 regular users. I hate owning physical media anymore and that's why I like steam/netflix. Especially since I don't rewatch movies that often. All that shit takes up too much space anyway.

I do love the physical media and I do rewatch movies all the time but I can't argue with the last statement. I've been completely out of space for a good while now. I've done just about every trick I can think of (including making my own boxsets: if I have a movie and its sequel(s) I put it in the same (2-disc or more) case, so it takes up less room... I think the next step is to really dig through the collection, take out everything I'm probably not ever going to watch anymore (but can't get rid of) and put them in one of those CD-folders together with all the covers. That way they're still on hand but hardly take up any room.

I put the majority of my collection into those big wallet things but saved the nice cardboard sleeve/steelbooks - the space opened up was amazing - I think I shifted six or seven full black binbags full of cases packed/stacked square. All the sleeves went into simple A4 storage binders and booklets/postcards etc into A5. The only problem is now blurays are starting to creep into the space the DVDs once occupied.

Looks like a nice project for the summer vacation, which is coming up in a month. Have a currently unused 'wallet thing' that can hold 64 discs. Let's see where that leaves me...

I did the same thing with all my DVD/Blu Ray/Disk based video games. Got rid of the cases and put the disks in albums, way better space savings. I miss the box art, but at least I don't have to worry about a cloud server going under and losing my collection.

Not really much of an issue for me with CD/DVD... but now I can fit most of my vinyl (nearly 2000 records!) into the living room; 12" artwork I can appreciate!

I pawned my entire DVD collection for $5 a pop. I don't even remember what I did with my computer CDs/DVDs. fin. When was that? I feel like I'd be lucky to get $2 each. Yeah, I've sold a bunch of stuff (mostly movies I replaced with the bluray) at a yearly flea market the past few years (I go every other year) and 4 years ago, €2 was the highest I could go. Had to lower prices on a bunch of stuff to get rid of them. 2 years ago that became €1.5 and 4 for €5 and I still couldn't get rid of everything and there were some pretty recent movies in that bunch. Of course some have the added handicap of having no Dutch subtitles, which still seems to be a big problem for some people over here... ...and the non-region 2 stuff I might just as well keep because nobody's ever going to buy those. Afterwards I threw a bunch of stuff away as well. Some cheapo DVDs of mediocre movies that you wouldn't even be able to give away anymore. I sometimes pass by this second hand store and he has cases full of DVDs for €0.50 each he's never going to get rid of because those (sub-par/mediocre) movies were already piss cheap when they came out and everyone with any interest already got them back then, watched them and got rid of them, hence his inventory. The flea market is also flooded with those. My collection stood out because they at least contained some quality movies and/or more genre specific things... I even had a few blurays and even those went for only €2 or €3...

Don't watch TV, don't have time... I did have a free month trial of Netflix. Rewatching old movies with poor streaming sound quality on higher end gear wasn't my cup of tea. I haven't watched a traditional TV show since....hmm...I can't remember it's been so long. I watch some Youtube channels that I find a lot more interesting and educational than a traditional TV show....

Anyone ever used Amazon's streaming service? Any good? *edit* I'm gonna try the 30-day trial. It sucks if you have nice audio gear like me as the sound quality of streaming services suck compared to a lossless bluray.

Yeah the only reason I'd keep it is to maybe get AMC, it's too bad they don't offer it as a standalone service. I didn't keep my Amazon Prime subscription after the free trial ended, but I decided to keep HBO Now. I watched some of The Man in the High Castle on Amazon after hearing good things about it. Overall, it was okay.

I'm actually still subscribed to Netflix, I've really enjoyed some stuff on it. Most of their own content is garbage but the stuff that is good is very good. Also watched Hot Fuzz the other day, great movie and hilarious. Wish they had Shaun of the Dead, I would rewatch that one too. They've unfortunately also since got rid of ALL of Futurama, which is on Hulu now. I almost canceled again after that, but it's reasonably cheap per month and there's plenty of good stuff to watch now.

The worst thing about Netflix is that they'll get a sequel, but not the original movie.

The worst thing is they won't release a lot of their original stuff on physical media anymore so you're either stuck with paying them for life or just illegally downloading said content.
