Recently started playing Civ 5 thanks to the Steam Winter Sale and it got me thinking about strategy games and how much I miss a good RTS. Some of my favorites would have to be the classics like the Starcraft and C&C franchise as well as AOE, RoN, Stronghold Crusader and Supreme Commander. These are ones I've played over and over again so I'd like a fresh new RTS franchise to enjoy but have yet to really find anything. Any suggestions?
EDIT: Planetary Annihilation is on sale today. Looks to have promise. I will return with opinions!

On sale for $6 and I haven't played an RTS in a good long while. I'm gonna try it out too.

Company of Heroes 1 is still my #1 favorite RTS of all time but I also like Starcraft 2 and its expansions.
XCOM Enemy Unknown I also really enjoyed, though that one is turn-based and not real time. Haven't played the second one yet.
Speaking of turn-based, I got Civ 6 for Christmas and it's awesome.

I'll have to check out Company of Heroes, not sure I've played any of them but I have always heard good things. I actually picked up XCOM:EU on the winter sale as well, I love that game. Had it on XBOX360 a while back and I'm curious to play it again on PC.
Also, I just completed a few campaign missions with Planetary Annihilation:Titans and I gotta say that this is the game that is going to scratch that RTS itch for now. It's got all of the classic elements of any good RTS and it's pretty easy to jump into if you know your RTS basics. Gather resources, maintain production/gathering quota, build structures strategically and build lots of units! One interesting aspect of this game is that it looks like later on in the game I'll have multiple battles going on at the same time but on different planets. That should be interesting.

Warhammer 40K Dawn of War 1 and 2 are really good too... Both same developer as Company of Heroes, but the first DoW is a straight up RTS, the second one is more like an RPG type of game. Company of Heroes 2 was alright but it seriously pales in comparison to the first one.
There was another game I used to play a lot called World in Conflict, the storymode was okay but the multiplayer was awesome, I had a lot of fun with it. It's an RTS except you don't build units, you have an allocated amount of points you can use to drop in units from infantry, jeeps, tanks, helicopters, mobile anti-air and artillery, as well as tactical nukes. You can also call in special air strikes like tank busters, napalm and artillery strikes among other things. Unfortunately no one plays it anymore. Last time I played multiplayer, there was one server open and they have rules in place about what units you can or can't use. I kind of understand why they have these rules, it's been years since the game was last patched and the US rocket artillery unit is way overpowered. If you use that unit, they'll kick you from their server. Not sure if you ever played Ground Control but it was the spiritual predecessor to World in Conflict, came out around the Voodoo 5 days. It was also pretty a good game.
Also Dawn of War 3 will be coming some time in the future, hopefully that will be good.

Even if you're not interested in a long-term subscription, subscribe for 1 month for just $12 and you get XCOM 2 - a $60 game. They give you the game product key which can be activated on Steam. www.humblebundle.com/monthly

I could definitely go for adding the sequel to my collection as well as whatever is included in the Humble Bundle monthly.

I'm looking forward to see what 3 is like, also, i'll check out World in Conflict and see what that's all about. I remember it but only vaguely.

Sphinx,
I haven't played it yet. I bought a PS4 last month, so I've been playing games on that.
Most critics liked XCOM 2. Some player review said it's a continuation of dumbing down of RTS's on PC. I noticed that it's also available on the PS4. But if you do get it, the obvious choice is PC. Also, the PC version can be modded (the devs explained one mod whick allows a first person view as you walk around your ship/base).

Hey Sphinx, I've got a free RTS for you (assuming you don't already own it)... Humblebundle monthly (subscription) has Total War: Warhammer included with the next month's free bundle. Actually, I already bought this game twice last month (due to website glitch showing the 1st purchase was declined, but it went through anyway). I gifted the 1st extra copy to Zombie (aka. Mole). Today, I see that I have another copy (with my Humble monthly subscription). If you want it, I'll send you the Humblebundle gift link. I haven't played it yet, as my current laptop doesn't meet the spec requirements and I'm waiting for parts to arrive for my new gaming PC build.

The total war series is great. Only two I've really put time into are empire and shogun though. Playing in a fantasy world seems like it would be epic.

I've been wanting to play Total War: Warhammer some more, I've played the first 2 missions, so far I think it's very good. I'll probably play it this weekend.
