We were in Finland the past 12 days. Most of the time in a villa on a lake, a few days in the capital Helsinki. The lake was the most impressive. Because it was pretty high up north, it never really got dark. Second pic is taken at around midnight, the darkest it ever got, on a rainy, overcast night, sun would rise at 3AM. First pic is taken at sundown at 10:30PM. Looks lovely, mosquitos were a problem though, not just at night. 3rd pic is a map of the surroundings, insane enviroment.

Nice. The closest you'll find to this in the US is the pacific northwest (Washington/Oregon). Nice places to visit, but I wouldn't live there. Off of the coast of these states is a big subduction zone that causes major earthquakes, tsunamis, and coastal flooding. It's only about once every 300-400 years, however, they're past due for the next big one. Evidence of the previous coastal floods remain from hundreds of years ago - the "Ghost forest" of Washinton state. www.onlyinyourstate.com/washington/copalis-ghost-forest-wa/

Haven't been to Alaska yet. I've heard that Alaskan mosquitos are the worst, during the summers, of course.
I don't remember having a problem with mosquitos in Washington state. Although, my first visit was to the cascade region (Mount Rainier), closer to the center of the state. The higher elevation probably had something to do with it.
My most recent visit to the state was along the state's west coast and it was raining off/on continuously. Bugs tend to go into hiding when it rains, so i'm sure that explains where the mosquitos went. It's typically a lighter (but steady) rain in Washington compared to other places in the US, so it's not enough to deter me from hiking or spending time outside.
