I thought about getting a i9-14900kf / 4090 desktop but the cheapest one I found was like $3099 with some pushing $4000 Glad I got the i7-14700kf: The amount of crashing and such with the i9s is absolutely ridiculous. I would be pissed if I paid that much for a PC only to have it crash and crash and have Intel deny and deny How do we know it's not Microsoft breaking things to push people in the direction of their AI/Copilot PCs - the ultimate spyware machines? Apple does this, breaks apps (not just slow-down, but apps cease to function), in older model iPhones to push people into upgrading to a newer model.

Something I noticed before - AMD is typically behind (or more conservative, depending how you look at it) with their cpu instruction sets/extensions. Versus Intel, who's the cpu maker pushing the envelope in this regard. So Microsoft and/or Intel could have to do more bug fixes to stabilize for the latest & greatest instruction sets.

So earlier this year I got an APC UPS. I thought about getting a CyberPower one from Best Buy but people online said those are hot garbage and go APC.
Earlier last week the UPS and my computer shut off while playing 7Days with some friends........it booted back up just fine but I'm watching it.
I had no idea but if you use MSI Afterburner or any other hardware monitoring software that uses HWInfo as a plugin, you can display your UPS wattage/percent usage on the OSD. I didn't even think about it.

I've had both APC and CyberPower, 0 complaints about both.

My employer let me purchase my old work laptop really cheap (less than $40), Fujitsu LifeBook U758. Has some impressive specs and touchscreen but just basic Intel graphics. Still can't wait to get it up and running, and Intel graphics are actually not bad with some games, especially older ones. Always wanted to have a dedicated Linux machine so this will probably be it. Would try SteamOS but I think that one requires a dedicated GPU, might still try it though.
Also wouldn't mind trying out an RTS on a touchscreen.

Apparently being inspired by Voxel Doom someone is working on Voxel Daggerfall. I don't have any hope it will be out soon, way more work then Doom, but still its cool:

You could probably play "Starsector" and a number of cool Indie games on it. I've read some good things about Starsector and it looks cool (if you're into complex 4x space strategy). I couldn't find it on Steam though. Not sure why they chose to avoid Steam, but you can find streams of it on Twitch. fractalsoftworks.com/Funnily, when I search for Starsector on Steam, they show you a different space strat game "Cosmoteer" (rave reviews and it looks promising - early access tho, so I'll wait). store.steampowered.com/app/799600/Cosmoteer_Starship_Architect__Commander/

He's playing a heavily modded version of Starsector. I don't know much about the game yet, but it's possible that the vanilla version is still in too much of an alpha state for Steam.

There are valid reasons to get behind SteamOS/Linux for gaming. www.laptopmag.com/gaming/your-rog-ally-doesnt-suck-windows-11-doesWhat they didn't tell you is that Windows 11 itself is the ultimate spyware. Collecting & recording information on everything you do with your PC and sharing it with who knows who. That alone is going to make it a huge resource hog.

This is cool. My current monitor is on the far right. I remember back in the day someone complaining their weren't enough matte monitors and how glossy ruins the image, some big game developer I don't recall who. I guess matte isn't some magic cure for anything. OLED HDR has ruined me. Even "fake" HDR like the RTX HDR I was using in Amnesia The Bunker. Any fire in the game looked amazing I just found out that Samsung.com offers discounts to employees of healthcare and first responders organizations. Scroll down to the bottom (in the link) and, under "Offers," click "Employee Offers Program." Then u create a Samsung account with your employee (.org) email. The employee discount on the 32" Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD) gaming monitor alone is $400. Similar deals w/ appliances and other products they sell. Worth looking into if you or a close family member qualifies for it. www.samsung.com/us/

Dell has a similar discount (for employees of healthcare or first responder organizations). It's a flat 5% discount coupon code, which they email to your qualifying work email (.org) address.. Unlike the Samsung employee deals, however, there's no need to create an account with your work email. I tested it and the coupon code registers valid on my Dell account setup w/ personal email. It's not near as generous as some of Samsung's employee discounts (varies by product), but it's something. www.dell.com/en-us/lp/dellmember#:~:text=Join%20Dell%20MPP%20to%20receive%20rewards%20and%20free%20expedited%20shipping

My Logitech G402 is starting to have a few issues due to its age, ordered one of these: www.amazon.com/Logitech-G-910-007143-Chell/dp/B0BRSR7HPKWanted it in black but it was going to cost more and would've taken a week to ship so got this one instead. Thinking about getting the wireless charging mousepad for it as well.

I got the Logitech G Pro Gen 2 earlier this year. My first wireless mouse.
Never got wireless before because of horror stories and bad performance but now even the pros use wireless.
The mouse maxed out at 2k wireless and 1k wired. Then they updated the firmware and it went to 4k wireless. It extremely debatable and highly unlikely even the best pro players can tell the difference between 2k-4k.
Today I got home from work and had another firmware update. Now it goes up to 8,000 hz wireless polling. Insane. I remember when 1,000 hz was considered all you would ever need.
Can't imagine the battery is going to last long at 8k

Thinking about getting the wireless charging mousepad for it as well. The G502 was my pick as well and it's been a great mouse. It's getting close to 4-1/2 years since I've purchased a G502. It's easily the best, most reliable mouse I've owned. The G502 X PLUS you're looking at appears to have the same basic design, but improved in minor ways (the side buttons are slightly taller and overall the edges have been smoothed a bit). For only $20 more than what I paid for the OG G502, you get the Millenium Falcon design and upgraded switches. Also, I bought a Razer DeathAdder Chroma a few years before getting a G502. The product page claimed the Razer as being the world's most popular mouse, but it's meh imo. Well, ergonomically, it could be a slightly better mouse for someone with larger hands. Also, since it has fewer buttons and a simplier design, it's a good choice for gamers who only play first person shooters (where you don't need extra features & buttons and prefer a more basic mouse to help stay focused).

According to the Logitech software the mouse will last 53 hours per charge at 2,000 hz, and 19 hours at 8,000 hz.......I can't imagine running at 8k is good for the longevity of the mouse.

The good thing is the G502 wireless has a very good charging cord, they make a wireless charging pad too. Gonna see if there's some in-depth reviews on that before going for it though.

I think the G Pro 2nd Gen has a similar cable. I don't have a wireless charging pad but what you can do is set it to 8k polling then plug the USB cable into a cellphone charger not your PC, then it uses the wireless connection but still charges.

It's just a mouse though (with very low power requirements), so it's drain/recharge cycling is much less frequent than a laptop, likely even at the 8k setting. My G502 is going on five years old and its battery life (per charge) is still good.

Got the mouse, was easy enough to set up right out of the box. Not sure if it needs to charge but I plugged it in anyway, the charging cable uses USB-C which I think is nice. Right away I love this scrollwheel.
*edit* Fully charged now, time to test how long it lasts. Decided to leave the LED's on the default scheme for the mouse, it comes with its own special Millennium Falcon themed one.
Hopped on Fallout 76 and right away it feels like I can aim and track targets better, did an event but it was one where the enemies have a stupid reflect damage ability, so I kept dying. Normally enemies are supposed to flash white when they are reflecting damage but these weren't.
*edit* Excellent craftsmanship on this product, reminds me a lot of my old Logitech G5 which might've been my first serious gaming mouse. 10/10 mouse so far, FO76 has lots of inventory screens to scroll through, so being able to unlock and free spin the scroll wheel to reach the bottom is nice. One thing I noticed is the Plus model doesn't have customizable weight like that other one, but I don't mind. My G5 had customizable weight and I honestly found it kind of trivial to mess with.

I decided to test 8,000 hz
My CPU was at 7% like 3.5 ghz or something. I moved the mouse back and forth as fast as I could.......
CPU shot up to 35% and 5.5 ghz, could actually hear the fan spin up a bit.
I'm trying to imagine 8,000 hz polling on a early-mid 2000s CPU

Going on 2 days (not sure how long it's been since I work nights but it seems like 2 days have passed), from the first full charge still has 63% remaining, heavy usage too. Sensitivity is still on default which is 3200 or something, maybe 3400. I usually have it around 2500 anyway, don't seem to need more than that.

yeah, one charge lasts for days. I haven't counted how many days because I've never needed to. The mouse has low reserves alert feature - a blinking red light comes on, letting you know when it's time to recharge it.

It got down to 40% and said it had 17 hours left but I decided to plug it in anyway. Still feels great even with the charging cord connected, don't even notice it.

Well I am done using the APC UPS I got a few months ago. I did the math and figured 650 watts is enough, I guess it doesn't actually deliver 650 watts. Twice now my PC has shut off and the APC makes a beeping noise. It also got super hot to the touch. Their software says it is at 100% charge and "functioning normally".
I guess I need to get at least a "1000 watt" UPS if I want my 550 watts of usage to be covered. Debating buying one locally at the Best Buy up the street.
