^Yeah I think ink cartridges are one of the biggest scams ever. I remember one time I got so frustrated that the ink cartridge was already printing faded orange lines after just a few uses, I got mad and punched the front of it which broke it. The whole thing fell open and parts fell out while it was operating, was actually kinda funny.

If they do require you print the return label yourself and you don't have a printer at home, you can go to the public library - use their computers and printer (it's 10 cents per page at the libraries around here). I do IT for a living so I have access to work printers to print documents for taxes and such. I'm actually having the monitor shipped to my work. I just ask Reception to hold the Amazon box so the mailroom people don't have to deal with it.

As a big fan of the Thief games hearing how amazing they look on OLED is one of the reasons I wanted to get an OLED monitor.
I guess later this year LG is coming out with a monitor that will switch between 4k 240hz or 1080p480hz instantly at the touch of a button.
I'm wondering if I should wait for that, sounds awesome.

Using DSC with HDMI, or using Display Port 2.0 with no compression? Smart move imo if LG added at least one display port connection. The chicken or the egg, and if high end TVs start incorporating DP 2.0 then maybe next Gen consoles will offer it as well. nVidia should have used it with this Gen, and whoever goes first with the next Gen of cards would be leaving themself open if they don't adopt it. Didn't AMD at one time have a more advanced DP option than nVidia? Lol, Sir Pauly or Ailuros would know!

My ASUS IPS monitor will be here tomorrow and I can't cancel. I'm debating if I should buy the Alienware before bed and send back the ASUS without taking it out of the box or try the ASUS. Another part of me wants to wait on the LG, I really don't need a 4k monitor tho

More of a curse than a gift, because I bought replacement ink cartridges a couple of times and they dry out super quick - I only get like 2-3 uses, because I don't print often, before they need replaced again. It takes like 5 cartridges, all must be good w/ ink, or the printer gives messages to replace them. Initially, I could get it to print in black & white (with only the black cartridge), but Epson updated the software sometime and made it so it only works w/ all ink cartridges having ink in them. Scamtastic!

I know that you can resize text & browser objects in Windows display settings, but that brings issues of its own, when you're using different sized monitors (such as, using a laptop monitor and external monitor simultaneously).

I'm going to send back the ASUS IPS soon as it gets here, not even going to open the box. Just going to get a refund. Ordered this last night View AttachmentMy employer is going to up my job code by 1 tier and possibly give me a pay bump. If it's more than the usual pitiful 2 to 3% annual pay increase, I might order one too. I don't watch much tv, so I decided to cancel my order on the LG tv. Just thinking I should be more conscientious about discretionary spending given the high inflation over the past 1-2 years and likely higher inflation in the future too. Moving abroad, where govt spending, inflation, and cost of living is more under control, is still at the back of my mind. I have a 100% remote IT job, so I could move anywhere. But I need to stay in the US for now due to my elderly mother needs help. My older siblings kind of ghosted on her and rarely visit her, much less help with anything.

I was debating taking the IPS panel home and seeing how it looked but naw. Soon as it got here I did the Amazon return. Already dropped off at the UPS store. Decided not to do the expedited shipping on the Alienware so the waiting game it is Living in Alaska so many years changed my perspective on how long shipping can take. One time the lowest tier free shipping from Acer took TWO WEEKS to go from Texas to Alaska. Brutal.

The YT review (posted somewhere above) did say the pre-configured settings weren't great, so you'll probably want to do the custom tweaks they recommended. Or, when Rtings does a review, try their recommended settings. Currently, there's only a forum discussion on their site. www.rtings.com/discussions/bqeQZD4NykzU8tJe/review-updates-dell-alienware-aw2725df

Yikes, mixed bag of comments, and while they wouldn't deter me from getting such an OLED if for some reason I strongly hankered that level of game-play, it could deter me if I was "only" doing a yooge upgrade. Well, it could deter a younger me anyway, that guy occasionally had patience. lol

According to UPS monitor will be here Wednesday, glad I didn't pay for expedited shipping lol. It shipped an 8 hour drive from me.
My laptop only supports HDMI, so I got a USBC hub that has a DisplayPort 1.4 port, should be good to go.

I don't. Being an IT guy I have a plethora of printers available to print stuff. I also live a 10 minute walk from a FedEx store with printers. I was actually on vacation from work and wanted to print out my car insurance card. I went to FedEx and they had some weird technical issue with the printer. Since I had to wait 10 minutes while they figured out what was wrong with their printer he printed it out for free for me. Funny enough my mom of all people has a printer that works with your smartphone. Basically you hit print on your phone and download and app and it prints out anything you need. They don't even use their computer to print things anymore.

I've been watching videos like this but I'm not too worried about burn in. The monitor has a 3 year warranty, so if I get burn in I will just send it in and replace it. If 4 years from now when its out of warranty hopefully I am still gainfully employed and can just buy a new monitor.
Also apparently the biggest issue with QD-OLED is 100% static white content. There are guides online to make Windows stop showing anything pure white. I am already a big fan of dark mode in computers and phones so not a lot of changes for me.
I will never understand how people can stare at bright ass pure white phone screens all day. I was in the sauna at the gym and I glanced over and the guy next to me had his phone out and it was just a bright ass white screen. I didn't even recognize he was looking at Instagram because I have only ever seen it in dark mode.

The Linus Tech Tips video on the Alienware points out the monitor screen is actually purple not black. I've been debating what game to play first on it. Seems to me this would be perfect: Thief Deadly Shadows has a purple hue too it. All the Thief games seem to go perfect with QD-OLED

I was looking at some pre-built PCs, I couldn't figure out why this one PC was such a great deal.....................then I realized the CPU was an 11 series. According to benchmarks its only 30% faster then my 4 year old laptop CPU.....eh.........no thanks.

Haven't been to judge cpu performance by processor speed for a while now. But I've noticed how sellers/resellers can try to be elusive with cpu descriptions in their product/sales pages and pawn older gen cpu's on customers. Sometimes, I've had to input the cpu model # into a cpu benchmark site to find out what generation cpu it was.

I didn't even recognize he was looking at Instagram because I have only ever seen it in dark mode. I have the same preference. The default for everything should be dark mode. Looking a bright white, static backgrounds is harsh on the eyes. They knew this even back in the early days of PC's and monochrome monitors, with the green or amber text and otherwise dark screen. Regarding IT employment, I think the big scare now is mostly do with FANG (Facebook, Apple, Netflix, Google) companies' recent wave of layoffs. "Techlead" (Youtuber) does videos on how programming/IT careers are dying because there's too much competition for peoples' attention, with apps like Tiktok and Twitter. While true (for FANG companies), what he's not factoring in is that many IT subsectors don't rely on peoples' attention (to generate revenue via click-throughs or ad revenue). i.e. IT jobs in government, defense sector & military, B2B, Hospital IT, Crypto, Manufacturers (some mfg of physical products, like tires, is still done in the US) etc have business models that don't rely on number of user views. Just don't move to California, thinking you'll have a bright future at a FANG (making $200k+ - since that's the cost of living in CA, your net after paying bills isn't more anyways), and you'll probably do fine.

Monitor got here. I have been looking at pre-builds. The good ones are all backordered on Newegg.
I wanted AMD this time around but the pre-builds I am looking at don't have the latest greatest AMD, they do have the latest Intel.
There is a pretty significant difference in performance between a late 2022 AMD and late 2023 Intel.
OFC if you are willing to spend $5,000 you can get whatever you want but I'm being reasonable.

Monitor got here today. My laptop only has an HDMI port, I got this little USBC hub adapter with a DisplayPort: a.co/d/7OfjMRkA lot of the USBC hubs don't do high refresh rates, that one had good reviews tho. At first the Alienware was stuck at 60hz and wouldn't change.......till I changed to extend not clone. Then I shut off my laptops screen. Set it to 1440p 360hz and worked, over a $20 adapter. A 2070 Super isn't strong enough for modern titles at 1440p. I fired up Thief The Black Parade since it's 25 years old. Looked amazing and ran at the 90 fps cap just fine. I'm out at dinner now but looking forward to playing with it more later.

One thing I didn't consider was HDR, its something I have always had turned off. Like I never think about it, ever.
People apparently use the shortcut Win+alt+B and turn it on right before they launch a game, then turn it off.
Also get this, the monitor isn't G-Sync certified at all. I haven't had G-Sync in 4.5 years since my 240 hz laptop doesn't support it. I just leave V-Sync off in the Nvidia control panel, and make sure its turned off in games.
Imagine my surprise when, via a USBC port -> DisplayPort dock -> monitor G-Sync actually works. I turned it on for now. In 2024 I am completely out of the loop on if its a good thing to have on or a bad thing. I need to do more research.
I have zero idea how to properly calibrate the monitor or if I should use features like auto-HDR or anything else.
According to YouTube HDR is an absolute clusterfuck on PC:
That is only one video describing all the problems with HDR on PC, plenty more where that came from.
Part of me wishes I never got a QD-OLED monitor. It has completely ruined all other monitors in the future for me. If there is a black bar in a game its pitch black because the pixels are literally turned off.
I'm shocked how well my 2070 Super, a LAPTOP GPU, is powering such a nice screen.

I'm still using this monitor: www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-XB271HU-bmiprz-2560x1440/dp/B06ZXZ3QBDCan't even remember when I got it but it's been a while, originally MSRP was around $500 but I was lucky to get it for $400 from Microcenter, they pricematched Amazon at the time. They almost didn't want to do it but did it for me when they saw how long I'd been shopping there. Probably will get another monitor eventually, definitely have been eying OLED and QLED. I think one of the best LCD monitors I've ever seen was the Asus VE258Q, 25" (which is kind of an unusual size for a monitor) and had probably the best colors I've ever seen on an LED backlit LCD. Unfortunately it stopped working at some point, just lost the input on everything. Might be fixable at a shop.

IPS looks great.
I'm still not done setting up lol. I got home and set the monitor to HDR1000 mode and Content mode. Supposedly the best settings. Its what Linus used when reviewing this monitor.
I know shit all about HDR settings but I downloaded an HDR calibration tool. It said my panel was in 8-bit mode. Shit. Its a 10-bit panel. I forgot. Set that vid Nvidia control panel.
Then I used Microsofts "official" HDR calibration utility which builds a profile and sets it universal in Windows. It isn't perfect but it looked better when I was done.
Then I loaded this video in YouTube:
.........Holy shit. Jaw dropping image quality. Words don't do it justice. Your phone screen is one thing but seeing it in your face 27" is another.
Apparently if I want the monitor calibrated 100% for HDR I need to buy a device that measures the screen brightness. I could do that then return it to Amazon but that feels kinda scummy

Speaking of HDMI ports, they suddenly stopped working on this old 32" Samsung tv (the one i mentioned earlier with backlight flicker problem). Factory reset on the tv and it fixed both problems. I guess all the software updates and tinkering with the tv settings over the years messed it up somehow, until i did a factory reset.

I've been following guides on HDR, they say drag the brightness slider all the way down for SDR to give the greatest dynamic range. Someone in another forum was like "Yeah then press Windows+G to adjust the highlights" Um.........what? I've been reading articles on HDR for days, and some rando mentioned this: HDR really is a clusterfuck on Windows right now. I had no idea that HDR settings were hidden in Win+G but not in display settings, thats really stupid but hey, its Microsoft. I haven't opened Win+G in years.
