forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3984488Despite being right in the heart of internet culture in the late 1990s/Early 2000s I never got around to registering an SA forums account. I read it a little bit off and on but was never a big fan. I know quite a few people on the original SCMB were also big into SA. Crazy to think how influential that site was at one point. It was basically the place to go online.

Never visited until looking at the linked thread... which led me to this: www.vice.com/en/article/3azxy8/something-awful-under-new-ownershipNegotiations for the sale of Something Awful had been going on since July when large parts of the community turned against Kyanka following an alleged incident of domestic violence, which Kyanka denied. On June 22, 2020, police responded to a 911 call at Kyanka's home for an alleged incident of domestic violence involving Kyanka’s live-in girlfriend. “Due to conflicting statements and a lack of witnesses, no arrest was made,” the police report about the incident said. This isn't the first time Kyanka has been accused of domestic abuse. According to police reports, Kyanka’s second wife accused him of domestic assault on February 7, 2020. Motherboard has been unable to independently verify the specifics of these events, but news of them made it to the Something Awful forums, and have been a major topic of conversation among posters there for months. Update 10/30/20: On October 27, after this article was published, Kyanka pleaded guilty to a charge of disturbing the peace and and paid a $164.50 fine. The assault charge was dropped.Sounds like he was a real swell guy...

Sounds like he was a real swell guy... I am so out of the loop with Something Awful that I didn't even know it was sold last year. SA was basically like 4chan + reddit for the late 1990s/early 2000s. 4chan actually came from SA. I knew tons of people into it back in the day because it was so popular but around 2005 or so it really had fallen off as being the center of internet culture. Was actually debating registering an account since its under new ownership just to check it out.

SA was heavily censored with like Soviet Union levels of moderation. 4chan got a huge flood of users due to the heavy moderation on SA.

I seem to remember going to SA back in the day to watch fucked up videos... I used to read the articles fairly regularly and lurked the forum a little bit, I figured I would register an account at some point then just kinda forgot the place existed. Since it is under new ownership I have been debating registering an account there just for the hell of it. I've wasted $10 on dumber things.
