As cool as the whole endeavour may be, surely by now it has been surpassed performance-wise by even a modest on-board video chip, no?

I guess it's more for nostalgia than anything. I still have a Voodoo 5 5500 but it doesn't work anymore. I'd definitely build a retro PC with it if it still worked.

As cool as the whole endeavour may be, surely by now it has been surpassed performance-wise by even a modest on-board video chip, no? Yes it would be really good for year 1999-2000 games but would rapidly drop off after that and be unable to run something as old as Doom 3 as it had no shaders which is how all modern rendering is done.

On a sunny day just put it under a tree for shaders.

Could be as simple as a cold solder joint... I actually have 2 of them. One has physical damage on the primary chip, the 2nd one I'm not too sure what's wrong with it. I do know on that one, it works in single-chip mode, which makes it effectively function as a Voodoo 4 4500.
