I read in the newspaper the other day Larian Studios is a Belgian games developer. I didn't even know such a thing existed but apparently they're pretty good. Not the type of game I play so I'll never know, but it's cool there's some local talent as well.

They've been around for decades now, so they must understand the importance of cultivating talented developers. They released a game called "Divine Divinity" around the same time that Diablo 2 was released. I had no idea they're Belgian (until your post).

If anyone can make BG3 its these guys. The Divinity Original Sin games are extremely deep and complex RPGs, there are people who say DOS2 is the best RPG ever made.
I never made it past Act 1 because I got distracted by other things but the Xcom style mechanics were really good.

I finished Divinity Original Sin 2 a little while ago. Really good RPG I understand why some people say it is one of the best ever. I am not a fan of the inventory management at all but I realize for some of the old school people the 1990s style inventory bags are part of the appeal.
Other then the inventory issues I really liked it a lot. If anyone can pull off a game as good as Baldur's Gate 2 its these guys.

One issue with D&D is the rabid fans go nuts on you if it isn't exactly like the D&D rules. This is one of the reasons Bioware dropped it for Dragon Age, they wanted the freedom to do their own thing without the baggage.

In the first video linked above, Swen (founder & director of Larian studios) says it's only available for PC and Google Stadia. Edit: Actually, he might have stated that in the Pax East Q&A video I watched, but didn't post. They could possibly re-release a graphically weaker version for other consoles later, like they did with DOS II. They even released a Nintendo Switch version of DOS II. However, next gen consoles are just on the horizon, so they might as well wait and release it on the new consoles.

This is one of the reasons Bioware dropped it for Dragon Age, they wanted the freedom to do their own thing without the baggage. It sounds like this won't be a game for hardcore D&D nerds. There's a Q&A with Swen (of Larian Studios) at Pax East where he goes into the details. He says there's no alignment system aspect in character building, since "Wizards of the Coast" asked that they keep that out. However, your characters can align toward good or evil during gameplay, based on the dialogue paths you choose. Supposedly, the game will be true to the D&D 5th gen rule set. Thankfully though, they designed the gameplay such that the D&D rules operate seamlessly in the background without the player having to worry about it. i.e. Instead of the player calculating & tracking stats, the game itself performs the calcs and displays a simple hit % on screen for the player, etc. What's most interesting about the gameplay (in single player mode) is that it'll be more like X-Com, where you move every member of your team/party, before the PC takes its turn. During player vs player multiplayer, all players can take their turns simultaneously, speeding up the game sessions and making it more fast paced. Another interesting gameplay mechanic seems to be that thief characters can move between turns, but still risk being detected and countered.
