So the s21 Ultra came around lunch time today. Fedex was supposed to get a signature but I guess cuz of COVID they didn't. Just tossed it on my porch and marked it delivered.
This is my first phone since 2010 where I can't use an SDCARD, I did the Samsung Switch utility and at first told it to copy my whole 200 gig music library..........naw, was gonna take 6 hours.
I cancelled that and did everything but music. Took less then 5 min. Picked Nova Launcher as my launcher and restored my backup of my layout from this morning. Everything is identical.
I copied over my music library directly from my laptop to the phone via USBC. Waaaay faster then Samsung Switch. Actually kinda glad to be off the SDCARD as now I don't have to use weird permissions in Apps, more and more apps break or work funny with SDCARDs so one less thing to worry about.
Its noticeably faster tho the S9+ was never slow. As soon as my work day was over I swapped over the SIM card and its good to go. Still using Visible fully unlimited everything $40 a month with 5G support. Paired it bluetooth to my laptop for work from home and deleted the S9+ out of my SUV's headunit.
Only that isn't working is the Secure Mail my firm uses. Keeps giving a security warning but I said we can figure it out after my long 4 day weekend.
The 120 hz is crazy smooth when going from screen to screen and YouTube and everything else looks amazing.

I downloaded a couple benchmarks, on one my S9+ scored 16,000, this S21 Ultra scores 47,000................yeesh. I don't think that is accurate.
So I tried Geekbench 5. The S9+ is 510 single core 2087 multicore, S21 Ultra is 1124 single core 3514 multicore, that is much more realistic then the other bench.
That is the best score of any Android device but for whatever reason no variant of the S21 shows up in the global rankings, the Asus phone which scores 9XX is the top ranked. It also just shows my phone as an "Android device" but not the name tho the S9+ it shows the name.
Either way its just for fun much like 3Dmark on the PC and doesn't really mean anything.

I thought you guys where all about the human eye can't see over 30fps back in the day.... amazing how the entire world has changed their tune.... Enjoy the smart device (I hate to call them phones, they're so much more), it's an amazing piece of hardware.

The refresh on the S21U is variable so when a static image is present it will clock down to 10hz to save battery. The battery on the S21U @ 120hz lasts better than my S20U did at 60Hz. I would leave it at 120Hz unless of course your eyes can't see over 60Hz lol.

So I got the most popular case on Amazon for the S21 Ultra but I don't really like it, the case for my S9+ I picked out at the Verizon store and its excellent. See how the S Pen case is when it gets here. If I don't like it I will order one from the same company that made my S9+ as it looks very nice.
I've been using the same dark backgrounds for years to save battery but actually trying some of the live backgrounds, there are apps that let you build animated backgrounds and such.
I haven't played PUBG Mobile since messing with it in like 2017 but I downloaded it and went with the full ultra HD pack, runs great. Very smooth and the giant screen looks good. PUBG Mobile puts you in games with bots for your first match but was some real people. Got 7 kills and was down to 2 left and the last one died to the zone lol. So I got a win but doesn't mean much.
Ran an app that shows you an FPS overlay, on the UltraHD version was locked at 40 fps, setting it to the lowest setting locked at 60 fps. Phone got pretty hot, oddly enough it uses only 50% of the CPU and 10-15% of the GPU. Probably a good thing based off how hot the phone was.

No issues with the phone, only issue I had is I was supposed to get 4 months of YouTube premium. I use YouTube Vanced on my phone so I don't see ads to begin with but hey free is free.
For some reason I didn't get the 4 free months, I reached out to Samsung support twice and they were no help at all. Broken English in their replies and I followed all the steps and still no 4 free months. Again not a big deal, I don't have much use for YouTube Premium.

Got my reimbursement check in today.......would have been sooner but I accidentally submit the invoice to accounting not the receipt lol. $1,458.99 for a phone. Also I got in the S-Pen case.....kinda wish I spent my points on free buds, its waaay too bulky with the S-Pen case on it, plus I don't have the need to draw on the screen. I switched back to my old case which is functional but sucks compared to my S9+ case. I still need to take some 108mp pics from the top floor of my building downtown. Here is one I took on my lunch break.

Here is one I took on my lunch break. The S-Pen just got/is getting some interesting new features. Samsung is really pushing the handwriting recognition ability of its devices, and you can now write into fields, and have the device convert it into text. I've got two tablets, the Galaxy Tab S4 and S7+, and I like them. I use the S4 now mostly to binge watch Netflix in bed. Though I also transferred some videos from my PC to it. The Samsung video player, and the VLC player, both are good at playing back x264 content. Haven't tested x265 yet.

I'm sure they are fine for x265. The S-Pen I have is the non-bluetooth one so nowhere near as many features as the Note series pen. With that pen you can set your phone down then walk away, press the pen and it takes a picture. The one I have doesn't do that at all. It just draws. I have no real use for it.

I'm planning on getting the S24 Ultra 512. S21 Ultra still going strong. Sadly new job doesn't pay for phones anymore but I got a nice raise so even factoring the cost of the phone im coming out ahead Yeah, My S21 Ultra is running great too. My uses of it are basic, and between using Samsung's Good Guardians app booster and the device learning my usage patterns, battery endurance has been very good. Lol, I'm actually excited over the rumors of S24 Ultra features I'll hardly use, but which sound cool. People have their hopes up over improvements to optical zoom, and some are even hoping for the emergency use of a satellite connection. Granted, that depending on where you live, that can be more incredibly useful than merely just exciting.
The rumored improvements to zoom sound almost too good to be true. Might get neither that or the satellite link. 144 Hz refresh rate might be in the cards, but unless Apple offers it I don't see it as having enough utility to nudge Samsung into offering it. That might be more useful on tablets used for drawing, as it could lower the already low latency of the S-Pen. It will use more power.
I've been swimming in tablets by me, as I couldn't resist the deal on the recent Prime day sale of the S6 Lite 2022 edition. Snapdragon 720G in it, and that budget mid-range SoC outperforms the Snapdragon 835 in my Galaxy Tab S4. The screen is just regular TFT LCD, but imo it looks great. And I say that as someone who has OLED for everything else, including my TV/monitor and my Galaxy Tab S7+. I got it for 215 bucks plus tax, (S-pen included and even with Android 13 loaded on it, though it was released with Android 12) but with 6% back with Amazon Prime on Prime Day. Samsung had a sale on their already discounted 256GB SAMSUNG PRO Plus microSD Memory Card + Reader, so I got that as well so as to augment the paltry 64GB of memory that the tablet came with. I use it mostly for streaming, so I'm fine.
P.S. I think that Samsung/Android thing of making virtual ram available actually benefits devices like mine that only have 4GB of it. Today I was testing how many apps I could keep in the background, and it was impressive how smooth things stayed. My Ultra has 12GB of ram, and I never get close to even using 8GB of it, as it generally stays well below 6GB of usage.
P.P.S. I've been extremely happy with the metal USB-C port plugs I bought. I had rubber ones, but they are prone to getting jarred loose. The design of the metal ones avoids that. A bit overpriced considering what I got, but it was easily the best deal around.

A lot of our fellow Ultra owners are going to wait for the S25 series. 3 nanometer, plus it will be the second generation of this newfangled AI on device system. Sort of similar to videocards, where the raw throughput of the new SoC is just an OK bump over that of the current Snapdragon flagship, probably be because it's on the same 4 nanometer process. The AI is where the new transistors are going, so somewhat analogous to nVidia using their transistor budget for ray tracing. Very cool, but only if you will use it. But the new seven years of OS updates, to compete with Google, is a very nice move. Though arguably more reason to wait for the S25 Ultra, as that could be a device that you'd not want to update for a very long time. Then again God only knows what pricing will be with that node, supply and demand.

Oh right, I have an unlocked USA version, so last in line for Android 14, I got it yesterday. My S6 Lite 2022 got it today. Hard to believe my Tab S7+ is now coasting on Android 13, with just several more months of security updates left to it, unless Samsung kicks out a few extra security patches for it that they aren't obliged to.
P.S. I grabbed a Tab S9, and that is like greased lightning. 256 GB of memory, so maybe that, with its faster storage system than the 128 GB version, and it's 12 GB of ram, is part of that.
Yeah, it's now blase time for processor upgrades, though as I alluded to above, all things being equal sometimes waiting a year can make an appreciable difference in upgrading. But anyway, the processor in my S7+, a Snapdragon 865+, still feels very quick, so I was prepared to keep my expectations in check for the Snapdragon 8 gen 2. It is like greased lightning, but I'm coming from something that's very fast, so it was very much an optional upgrade. As the S21 Ultra has an even faster SoC, I know that having patience when upgrading the phone could be the way to go. I still get one more OS update, and a year of security updates beyond that.

It looks like with trade in if I want the 1 tb model it would be like $800 something. Not bad. Haven't made up my mind.
Back in 2018 I was going to wait till the new Note phone came out. I had just moved to the other side of the country, all the sudden my old phone started to get super hot and would go from 100% to like 80% in 10 minutes of being unplugged if you watched a video. Thats when I found out about swappa. Got my S9+ from there for way cheaper then new and without a scratch on it.
I realize between now and next January my S21 Ultra could develop problems and might not get as good of a deal...

Here's my pre order deal (which I might cancel)
*S24 Ultra 512GB $1419.99 *Galaxy Buds2 Pro $229.99 *Anti-Reflecting Screen Protector $29.99 *Leather case $59.99
=$1,739.96
My early pre-order incentives: -$120 on phone (aka free double memory upgrade from the 256GB version) -$229.99 on Buds2 pro (free) -$29.99 on Screen Protector (free) -$26.76 on Leather Case -$650.00 for S22 Ultra Trade In (Keeping my S23U for backup) +$44.18 NJ Sales Tax -$16.35 Leftover Samsung Reward Points
=$711.05 Out the door (free shipping) for a total of $1,056.74 off full retail.
My state tax return will cover it so it's not like it will even touch my savings or even my federal tax return but my bank account has already been debited for the full amount so I have already paid for it in full.
I still have the cancel button on the Samsung site so I can still cancel it before it ships and get refunded (doubt they will pack it tomorrow on Sunday). I've been upgrading every year through Samsung's early trade in deals since the S10 but I'm really not feeling it this year. The loss of the 10mp 10x optical sensor for a 50mp 5x optical zoom is kinda meh to me because however on paper the higher megapixel should maintain quality when digital zooming compared to the 10mp 10x optical zoom, the problem is higher megapixels on small phone sensors really crap out in lower light conditions because the smaller pixels collect less light in low light situations so high zooming is going to suffer in low light (already confirmed this by Youtube tests). In bright daylight it should be nearly a wash with zooming 30x to 100x of the 5x 50mp sensor on the S24U vs the 10x 10mp on the S23U but in low light the larger pixels on the 10mp 10x sensor of the S23 will collect more light and give a better result. This is why when the main 1x sensors are used in 200mp mode they really suffer in low light and dynamic range and only work well in bright sunny days with minimal shadows - with these small phone camera sensors typically you'll get better photo results in the standard 12mp mode since the pixel binning making the pixels larger which collects more light and dynamic range.
Why they did this is because of somewhat of another flaw on the S23U where the 3x optical has to jump all the way to a 10x optical where the 3x loses a lot of quality digital zooming up to the point the 10x takes over. But IMO it would of been wiser to loose the 3x optical on the S23U for a 5x and keep the 10x on the new S24U instead of a 1x to 3x to 5x optical I think 1x to 5x to 10x would of been more optimal but I think they chose 3x specially for optimal quality for portrait photos.
The new AI features I don't care about and will be said to turn into a subscription post 2025 and also come to the S23 in a later update anyway.
What do I really gain in the upgrade for my $700? *Better camera zoom quality from 3x to 10x with minimal loss to full 100x in well lit daylight *Brighter Screen for use in daylight *Better Antiglare *Flat screen *Upgraded Earbuds from my original Buds Pro to the Bud2 Pro *Slightly faster chip but I doubt that it will be noticeable in day-to-day usage *Slightly better battery life, but like above, not going to be noticeable unless I had both side-by-side benching
What do I lose? *$711.05 *My S22 Ultra *Worse max camera zoom quality in lower light
Hmmm.... The S23U is really a beast of a phone and some of the camera upgrades seem to make it lose performance in other ways. Basically most of my daily uses will seem the exact same (music streaming, browsing social media, etc.)
Just really not feeling it this year... It won't bother be financially to do the upgrade but why throw money away if there's no real gain? I typically only use the Buds at work and use high quality headphones at home so....really...what am I gaining this year that I'll notice in the way I use my smartphone? Easier to see screen in bright sunlight and better camera zoom quality in the 5x to 10x range. Maybe less accidental touches with a flat screen instead of curved. Yea....not really feeling it this year....

The S23U might be a good choice for you if battery performance is your main concern if you can get a better deal on it because the S23 was a good jump in battery life over even the S22 due to the much more efficient Snapdragon chipset. Not only that but the system storage and chip is so much faster that updating apps say if I was updating 20 apps on both the S22 and S23 I could let the S22 get down to only 5 apps waiting to be updated and start the updates on the S23 and the S23 would not only catch up to the S22 but finish quicker! Take it from someone who has upgraded every year since the S10, the S23 is a super beast! It was a good jump even over the year before but I'm feeling the S24 is only some minor polish this year. I would get the S23U if you can get a much better deal than the S24 but both will put the S21 to absolute shame in every category and you wont need benchmarks to see/feel it.

Yarp, I have both an S21 Ultra, and a Galaxy Tab S9 with the same chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) as that of the S23, so I can vouch for its speed. Though my S21 Ultra never feels like it's lagging for me. It's got 12 GB of ram, of which I generally use much less than 8 GB.
One thing with the newer phones, you want to get 256 GB of memory, because only that and above gets UFS 4.0. Not that UFS 3.1 isn't fast!

Phone came yesterday. Found the first bug - the vivid mode in the display isn't currently working making it look dull compared to what I'm used to lol. Well vivid mode with the rgb sliders all the way up makes a every so minor difference but it's barely noticeable. I'm normally hyped up to try the new cameras but I've only opened the app and swiped through the different zoom levels but haven't even taken one single pic yet in a day and half. It's nice and all but most of its updates pertain to stuff I'm not really interested in like the AI. There where a review on youtube that said that the cpu/gpu performance is so good on the S24 that it can perfectly do PS2 emulation. But myself, I'm kinda meh about this phone atm. I'm sure once it's hot and sunny and I'm outdoors I'll appreciate the new anti glare screen and brightness.

Uh .... check out Reddit and the reviews, and while very shortly you won't notice it, there is a tradeoff for having a screen that acts as a deflector shield for unwanted light reflections, bouncing the rays away. At least indoors anyway, used outside its benefits should make it superior across the board. More than one reviewer stressed that only in a side by side is it noticed, in real life usage a person who hadn't done the comparison would only be thinking how great the screen was.

Gotta love technology companies.
So my S21 Ultra got the OneUI 6.1 update yesterday. The 6.0 update was completely smooth so I didn't even think of it.
Ever use something so much you forgot you are using it or how to explain it because its muscle memory? While using my phone I tried to go back to a previous app but when I did that it just brough up a search window. I actually struggled to use my phone for a minute and had to figure out how to navigate without that gesture, I forgot what it was officially called.
Before gestures everything was hardware buttons, I actually liked those, but technology marches on and somewhere around 2019 or something I got used to just using gestures for everything.
Turns out Samsung made their own custom gestures that are different from stock Android. One of them is going to the Recent App menu, in that menu you can see all running apps, how long they have been running, and swipe to close or Close All apps.
One of the things Samsung did with OneUI 6.1 is do away with their custom Samsung only gestures and only use the stock Android ones. Shit.
Turns out there is a workaround, there is an app in the Samsung store called GoodLock and it has a subapp called NavStar. With a combination of those two apps and changing some settings I got the swipe up from the left Recent Apps gesture back.
Wonder if that will keep working with next years model....

So I was hoping to wait till 2025 to get a new phone.
Today was very nice outside so I decided to walk down to Chipotle and get some lunch. As I was pulling my phone out of my pocket it slipped out of my hands and went spinning into the cement.
Screen cracked bad, white line going across the screen. When I took the screen protector off I even saw the glue coming off. Ugh.
I went to Best Buy and got the S24 Ultra 512 gig. I'm on call at work so I wanted this resolved ASAP.
There is a phone repair place like a 10 minute walk from me, I think I am still going to get a new screen and a new battery to make the S21 my backup and finally throw away my S9+

Weird I thought I posted in this thread yesterday. I got my S21 Ultra fixed at a local place. They did a great job. The guy was like "the sides of the phone will be silver, do you care?"
My phone is in a case 100% of the time, you can't even see the sides. Got a new battery and a new screen on my S21 Ultra.
So now I am debating do I want to keep the S24 Ultra and use the S21 Ultra as a backup or pay the $45 restocking fee at Best Buy and go back to my S21 Ultra till next year?
Dunno, I am kinda spoiled on the speed boost of the S24 Ultra...
