I'm already a subscriber so I just signed in and grabbed the game. The newsletter is just about deals, and sometimes free games like this.

Was that the crazy game that used voxels?

The original did. Not sure about the remake.
Voxels with destructible environments were a touted feature of "Crowfall" when it was first announced on Kickstarter. But it appears the devs changed their minds since then, due to the performance hit it would've had on the game.

I have Outcast 1.1 on Steam, tried to play it but it just looks and feels so outdated now. I remember enjoying the original Outcast when it first came out though, also it was technically impressive for the time. *edit* Looked it up, 1.1 is a remaster of the original game and still uses voxels, Second Contact is an actual remake with much better graphics and controls and as far as I can tell, it doesn't use voxels. I remember this other game from around that time called Giants: Citizen Kabuto that was pretty good. The story was also funny. They have this one on Steam, it's $3.39 right now but cheaper (barely) on GOG; www.gog.com/game/giants_citizen_kabuto

Pretty sure I bought it already on GOG. Still never played it tho.
Ever wonder how different video games would've been if the gaming and video card industries embraced tech that's optimized for voxels instead of polygons?
You know, if any of the Multiverse theories are true, there could be alternate universes where the people are smarter... Maybe they made better buying decisions which led them to development of phenomenal (mostly) voxel based games, and more advanced plasma 4K monitors/tvs to play them on, etc.

I remember playing games like that with 3dfx, the FSAA on the Voodoo5 really blew me away. "Giants" was one of those games where it really stood out. Very big and open 3rd person shooter with RTS elements. It was pretty unique too, I don't think I've ever played a game quite like it since. They were gonna make a sequel called "First Wonder" but the crowdfunding campaign failed and they canceled it. They needed $500,000 but only made $46,000.
Also I agree, there may well have been some potential for voxels. I think there are still some games (even newer ones) that use it though. I remember there being command line stuff in Crysis 1 for voxels, I think it had to do with parallax mapping (when surfaces have a raised/detailed appearance).
