Whenever people mention Shadow Warrior I can't help but think about the controversy in the 1990s when the original came out and some developers, especially asian ones complained it was terribly racist and you shouldn't buy it. I read a few really long posts about it. Never actually finished the original.

Oh yeah now I remember. They're dancing in the car while it's going down the highway.

Never actually finished the original. Think I only played the demo. Wasn't it around the time Quake introduced actual 3D? All of a sudden all those pseudo 3D sprite games looked very archaic...

Sprite-based vs. polygon-based graphics? Well, those low poly count (and little to no texture) games look like crap too, by today's standards. A fairly common opinion I tend to agree with is that many sprite-based 2D games look better than low poly 3D (for example, Chrono Trigger vs. Final Fantasy 7).

It is a 4 year old game, it shouldn't even cost $40-$50 anymore, so free is nice. I gave other people that link too.

I played like 15 minutes of it. Has an odd look. Since its old was able to do 4k DSR with ease. Will have to dig into it more at some point, seems fun.

Maybe, but Quake 1, to me, looked better than all those 2.5D sprite games. As much as I loved those, it was hard to go back to those jerkily animated sprites after seeing the full 3D Quake monsters. I do agree that 2D games always look better with 2D sprites, even today. I prefer Metal Slug's pixelart over let's say Bionic Commando (2) on the PS3, even though that last one is a lot more recent. Oh well, in the end all that matters is how well it plays.

Oh well, in the end all that matters is how well it plays. I agree. It's in the gameplay (how well it plays and how fun the game is), and graphics aren't as important. I really liked Quake 1 too, but sometimes nostalgia affects our memories of a game. I looked up some youtube gameplay vids, to see how they compare today. imo, Quake 1 still looks fun. However, Doom 1 appears to hold up the best graphically (looks smoother and less distortion & jaggies, for whatever reason). Wolfenstein 3D Doom 1 (original graphics) Quake 1 (original graphics) Funnily, there's a fan base for games with bad graphics and many Indie games capitalize on that. Barony (more recent Indie game w/ graphics worse than the classics)

Barony (more recent Indie game w/ graphics worse than the classics) Barony is a lot of fun. I have finished it like 4 or 5 times. One of those games that seems impossible at first but once you figure out how it works its not that bad.

Edit/correction to my previous post: Quake 1 graphics in the vid I posted looked distorted/grainy probably because they're using the original software rendering. But it was made to look better w/ GLQuake or newer. I didn't consider this initially because I played the game before even owning a 3dfx video card or card that would've allowed hardware acceleration in Quake 1. www.quaddicted.com/engines/software_vs_glquakewww.quaddicted.com/quake/recommended_engines

Even though the graphics of Barony aren't good, overall, the game has been well received on Steam. I read some positive reviews on Steam that suggest it has fun & interesting game-play. How did you play Barony, single-player or multi-player? What class/es of characters/builds did you choose and which one/s were the best?

I never got around to doing it multiplayer. At first I did the Fighter class but switched to Merchant so I could identify faster. Wizard/Clerk might be the easiest due to how powerful spells are When I first started playing I had no idea WTF I was doing and kept dying in the first or second level over and over and over again. After I figured out how to fight better and upgrade gear it became much easier. Took me about ~20 tries to finally beat the game.
