www.ign.com/articles/2016/08/31/eve-online-going-free-to-play-after-13-yearsIt's old news, but I just now found out after logging into it for the first time in several years. Not sure what the limitations are compared to paying monthly, but I played for 6 years so I have some pretty awesome ships. Plus quite a bit of ISK (in-game currency). So, yeah I'll definitely be re-visiting EVE. The reason I stopped playing is because it was incredibly time consuming. You have to devote a lot time to it in order to get anywhere, due to the player-driven nature of it and all the politics. Ends up feeling like a second job. However, it's one of the most technical and in-depth games I've ever played, the learning curve is insane. It takes weeks to just to learn the basics of the UI and gameplay. Despite tending to be tedious to play, it's a very huge game that can be extremely epic at times. I witnessed battles with hundreds of ships, but there are battles that happen with thousands of ships out there too. *edit*

Ive seen a bunch of Eve videos showing huge raids and drama and also read about some of the crazy backstabbing. Never played it though because I don't want a massive timesink to think about.

Yeah I was friends with this guy from England that ran an industrial corporation last time I played, I might look him up maybe he's still around. His corporation built a few ships for me, including a Maelstrom which was probably my favorite ship in the whole game. At one point they had $90 billion ISK in assets. One of his directors stole everything and fled to null-sec space, just out of the blue betrayed him. Was someone we all trusted and had alongside us in battles too. That is part of what makes it such a unique game though.
Last time I talked to him, his corp had rebuilt but still didn't have as much as before.
*edit* and I found one of the free to play drawbacks... Certain skill levels are capped below their max, which will limit what kinds of equipment or ships one can actually use. Being able to have skills not capped requires paying.
*edit* However, I found a new section in my assets called PLEX Vault, not quite sure how it works but they changed the whole PLEX system. Stands for Pilots License Extension, you can buy them on the market and they add gametime to your account. So if you make enough ISK in the game, you can actually pay for gametime for free, but it takes a lot of work to be able to. Not sure how they work now.

^It is a very tedious and time-consuming game. One good thing is, the only thing you have to really grind for is money and resources. The skills in the game level up over time once you start it. I remember certain skills taking up to months to finish.
The reward of playing is really just being able to see things happen and be a part of it. It's definitely not a game that can be played solo easily, it's more enjoyable if you find friends to play with. I've still had lots of fun playing solo, exploring low-security space and getting into battles with others. Assault Frigates are very fun, they're light and fast and pack as much firepower as a Cruiser. Was always my favorite ship for exploring low-security space, most people just ran from me. I had an awesome fit for the Minmatar Wolf that was ranked 4th on Battleclinic's loadouts for it, but sadly they closed and their website is no more. I have a feeling it could be because lots of players have left the game, which is why they went free to play.
I remember one time 3 of us were in low-security space in BC's, we see this hauling ship undock from a station and start talking about looting it. Spur of the moment, I decided to attack and destroy it. It dropped a lot of valuable stuff and we all split it between ourselves equally. The pilot of the hauler was very pissed off. Later on, I found myself in that same space to get a very valuable ship. On my way out of the system, I ran into that same guy and he could've easily killed me. Instead he just said, "Get out."
If your ship is destroyed, it's gone and you have to buy another one. If it's a ship that you spent a lot of money on and you don't have enough to buy another one like it, it really becomes about if you can risk flying it or not. Even some of the PVE missions are difficult enough that you can lose your ship easily if you aren't careful.
There's also players who make lots of money just through trading and stocks.
