My little retro 80's home arcade just grew by one game! Picked up a Missile Command last weekend! So I bought it as fully working about two and a half weeks ago and when I went to pick to it up the game decided to be dead when I arrived....interesting timing. The seller goofed around with it for a couple weeks and couldn't get it working. During that time he had my money and had the game and on top of that, he kept reposting the ad on Craigslist as for sale and "fully working" even though it wasn't working and was sold. Interesting businessmen? So I then decided to just to take it non-working anyway as this is the third one I fought for over the winter (got outbit on ebay and my truck was broke down for the second one that slipped away and the others where thousands of miles away). The one I got outbid on sold for a tad over $1000 in similar cosmetic condition but was working so I guess picking up this one for $600 not working and putting a few hundred into it I'll still be in the green. I already sent the power supply/audio amp and main game logic board out to reputable Atari arcade repair guys plus I have tested and working boards already being shipped to me so hopefully I'll even have a complete set of spare working circuit boards when all said and done. So anyway, my usual pics, pics, and pics galore...... Cabinet was filthy and looked like soda spilled down the side..... So I marinated it with twelve coats of Simple Green to get the STD's off of it, lol.... I hate the smell of Simple Green but it's the best general purpose cleaner I've ever used! Luckily the aftermath smell goes away after a few days (that's what she said! LOL!) Inside also got vacuumed and a Simple Green bath..... Just one swipe of paper towels....eww.... 37 years of Hepatitis C build up, lol.... Control Panel and Monitor Plexi Cover de-contaminated with Arcade Antibiotics....lol... Scraping off some Hemorrhoidal residue on the Marquee left from a sticker or tape.... After I got it clean enough to bring inside I got it put into place with the rest of my games.... It had the wrong bezel so I shit-canned it (why you can see the monitor frame) and will try to find a new one or cut a new one myself if I can't find one for this game. It also needs a trackball rebuild as the roller pins are badly worn (already have the rebuild kit ordered). I also have a braze multigame kit that upgrades the main game board for better reliability (bypasses the stock unreliable ram and roms but still uses the original CPU so its not emulation), high score saving, modern on screen settings menu, and an extra and newer game called Super Missile Attack that you can switch to by holding down the player 1 & 2 buttons. Oh, little fun-fact about Missile Command.... The world record score consists of 55+ hours of continuous gameplay! You think you're a 1337 and hardcore gaymer? Think again.....lol. I can currently only last about 8 minutes until I'm dead and game over.....55 continuous hours in Missile Command is some seriously mad skills AND determination!

You're probably the first person ever to actually clean it (with soap).

Next you need Street Fighter 2 or Champion Edition Loved it as a kid but don't care for fighting games anymore. Kinda been into the golden age classics lately. My final and last game is going to be..... {CLICK FOR SPOILER} I'll keep it as a surprise unless you want to try to guess. You're probably the first person ever to actually clean it (with soap). That's what she said, lol. Yea, these machines where rarely cared for and a lot of time the original operators took them to the dump when they stopped making money or half-assed converted them to another game. They usually don't get any love until they fall into the hands of someone like me.... Well the refurbed audio amp/power supply board is due to arrive tomorrow and the game PCB is due to arrive Friday so I'm crossing my fingers I'll have a working Missile Command shortly.... In the meantime, more pic-a-roonies, lol.... The game didn't come with none of the original documents so thanks to ebay I was able to snag a original manual and schematics.... And with great luck an original new old stock game flyer..... Front/Back... Inside page 1/2.... I almost want to call the phone number on the flyer to see if it's still a active number, lol. So does anyone want to try to guess what my next and final arcade game is going to be or shall we save it as a surprise?

Wow the guy I sent the board to definitely know his stuff! I sent it out yesterday morning and I got the message tonight around 9:21PM that the board has already been diagnosed and repaired! Here's his log of fixing my game board: www.arcade-cabinets.com/fixes/missile_command/index.html#33The guy I bought the game from gave me the runaround for two weeks and swore it was the ram chips but wasn't producing any results and the guy I sent it to had it diagnosed and working within hours of receiving it! I guess that's the difference between thinking you know what you're doing and actually knowing! I can't believe I shipped the board out one day, and the very next it's fixed and the other guy couldn't get it running working on it for two weeks straight....grrr...lol.

I'll give you three guesses for your next buy:
Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, or maybe a Donkey Kong?
The machine looks good!

Rad Mobile... ...that's the one I'd get if I had unlimited moneys (even though the pseudo 2D/3D graphics have probably aged horribly)... ...or a 2 seat Daytona USA...
Wait, I got one: Raiden, that classic red plane/blue plane vertical shooter.

Galaga and Donkey Kong would be excellent choices, if you can find one. meh, on Pac-Man games. I liked them back in the day, but now they seem too repetitive and difficult (especially, Ms. Pac-Man after just a few levels... tough game). Personally, I'd substitute Ms/Pac-Man with Dig Dug. Dig Dug is a pretty awesome game. It's probably one of the first games to allow players to manipulate the environment and kill the enemies indirectly, through falling rocks.

Wait, I got one: Raiden, that classic red plane/blue plane vertical shooter. Raiden is a great game. I like the "nuke option" that kills everything on the screen, when things get overwhelming. "1942" is another classic vertical shooter. I remember playing it on the NES as a kid. I was able to survive a while and had alot of fun playing it. I'm sure the arcade version is that much better. Here's a browser version of 1942 (supposedly, ripped from NES version). Controls seem laggy compared to original NES version, no doubt because it's a browser game. Controls: Arrow keys to move around. X key to shoot. Z key to roll (dodge enemy attacks). www.playretrogames.com/2353-1942

Don't care for Donkey Kong or Pacman (liked Pacman as a kid but don't care for it now). Out of all mentioned Galaga is the closest to one I might bring home because that game surely brings back memories (played it along side of Centipede, Dig-Dug, Donkey Kong/JR, and even 1942 at the same pizza shop) and I still kinda like playing it and it's a good game for replay value for chasing high scores but that and the rest mentioned are not it, hehe. I'll give a hint, it uses a vector monitor and not a color raster monitor. So anyway, the first wave of parts to fix up my Missile Command arrived today..... Above is new trackball roller pins and bearings, a refurbed and tested A/R-II-03 board (power supply/audio amp), and the Braze multigame kit which I got mainly for the high score saving and free play features but it also bypasses the stock ram and rom chips making the game board much more reliable and it's not emulation because it still uses the stock CPU chip which plugs into the add-on card and then the add-on card plugs into the CPU socket on the main PCB and it just moves the original ROM code and memory to more modern and more reliable chips. It also adds a on screen setup menu instead of using the dip switches and a more in depth test mode than the original setup. Pretty neat people are making new upgrades to these old arcade games.....

Loved that game as a kid and thought it was cool as hell playing the cockpit version but that's not it! I don't think Star Wars has that great of replay value as it's a very short game and I don't even find it fun anymore like I did as a kid. Last hint, it's a black and white vector and not a color vector as posted above, hehe. BTW, I drove a 6hr round trip and picked the game up today! Monitor isn't working but it's playing blind so I thought it was worth the gamble for the cheap price that I paid to try to get the monitor working (Only paid $150 for it and it's complete albeit dirty as hell, just no neck glow on the tube which *might* mean it just needs a cap kit). I said to myself I would never bother with another non working game but I couldn't turn it down for only $150 playing blind....it's worth a gamble at that price and if I get it working....major steal!

lol...nope. I guess another hint....even though it uses a black and white vector monitor they somehow magically put 3D color in the background behind the image being rendered by the monitor using a two way mirror and a black light....and....it's a sequel to a "uber classic"....lol. Should be able to figure it out now, heh.

Asteroids Deluxe?

Where you cheating and stalking my imgur account? hehe. Well yea, it's Asteroids Deluxe. I just got it working this afternoon. The people didn't know anything about repairing them and just wanted it out of their house ASAP. As you can see from my photo, the blacklight isn't working so you can't see the neat background effect that this game has. To fix the game is was a loose/bad connection. To grab a all original Asteroids Deluxe for $150 and having it working the next day is probably the best deal I've ever got on anything, LOL. Their original asking price was $600.00 and I told them if the vector monitor is shot it wont be able to be replaced easily so the guy said "$150 I just want this thing out of here." lol. Here's one on Ebay for $1,500: www.ebay.com/itm/Atari-ASTEROIDS-DELUXE-Arcade-Video-Game-UPRIGHT-Vintage-Rare-1980-Vector-MI-/292092488942$150 was so much cheaper than $1500, lol, but honestly it was a gamble since if the monitor was toast, it really would be hard to find one. I figured for $150 it was worth the gamble. I just need to clean it up, get it inside, and fix the blacklight.

Missile Command is fixed and completed. The second gameboard I had bought as a backup did not work and has been shipped back to the guy I bought it from for a refund. The original board went out to a more capable repair man with the correct testing tools to test chips. It had a bad chip in the vsync circuit which only cost a dollar but time/labor was $85. Here's his log of fixing my game board: www.arcade-cabinets.com/fixes/missile_command/index.html#33Trackball had to be rebuilt as the rollers where very worn: New roller vs old: New roller and bearing in with one to go: Making a new monitor bezel: After I verified my repaired game board worked I took it back out and added the high score save/multi game kit. You pop off the CPU, add a daughter card to the CPU socket, and then install the CPU onto the daughter card: Up and running with the rest of the games. The trackball rebuild also made a world of difference, plays so much better: Daylight: Very fun and challenging game. Update on the Asteroids Deluxe: The monitor died again and had to be rebuilt. I'll make a dedicated thread for that game with all the details of repairs to it's final resting spot.
