I picked it up on the way home from work this morning (PS4) and put in about four hours before bed; the time flew by and would probably have been longer but the 45GB install put paid to that. I'm enjoying it quite a lot so far although flying helicopters (pretty much essential given the size of the map) is a little different to what I'm used to playing GTA and the absence of a 'jump' button really threw me for a bit.
It's kinda feels like (to me anyway) a hybrid of SOCOM, Metal Gear Solid, Far Cry & GTA... technical but fun, I'm only playing 'Veteran' at the moment (second of four levels) - harder levels have shit like one-shot kills, no markers etc. - and for the first hour or so I did get tanned a few times, luckily your squad members can revive you (and visa versa).
There's a shit-tonne of stuff to collect/upgrade (character/squad/weapons/support) - the 'gunsmithing' is pretty cool and lets you totally customise your weapons down to the type of trigger... I also really like using the drone and can't wait until I can start adding explosive payloads.
The driving isn't horrible like, for example, Just Cause 3 was... Jesus, thinking back now JC3 was fucking HORRIFIC... it's not GTA level good but, yeah, not bad at all... as mentioned the helicopter is a little weird but it makes for some 'seat of your pants' flying, I think I did even clench a couple of times coming down through treetops... straight HM Murdock shit baby.
The map is fucking huge and seemingly all accessible from the off although I decided to just stick to the first territory to get used to things; side missions/locations/objectives/collections pop up thick and fast and I can see this is going to become a "I'll just do this last thing before turning off... (3hrs later)... I should probably go to bed now" kind of game.
Only eight-hours forty-six minutes until hometime...

Great review. I played this during the open beta and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'll probably be picking it up for PC sometime this week or next. Currently making progress on another open world game, Just Cause 3.

I didn't really get on with JC3 and ended up dropping it quite quickly - part exchange only lost me something like £4, the cost of a rental, against my next game - apart from the inferior grapple abilities JC2 was for me a far more enjoyable game.
After playing Wildlands some more I can add some further comments - nb. I haven't patched it yet, I think Day 1 added/fixed some stuff:
Squad AI is sometimes very hit and miss - a couple of times now I've sent up a drone and tagged the opposite side of a compound for their destination, rather than sneak round the perimeter they've just piled through the centre, one time right across the dirt football pitch a group of sicarios were playing upon. Smooth as pie.
Turning off the HUD really does make a difference, I'm not one for banging on about (((TEH IMURSHUNS!!1))) but putting on some headphones really does help out a lot... I think there might be an app for the game that let's you see the map so if, like me you're playing solo, you don't keep having to go into the menu.
Mission wise I've only taken down one district underboss so far - technically two people, horrible man & horrible wife, two horrible shitty bling guns never to be used looted yay GG! I really want the cigar accessory but you have to join some shitty Ubisoft club so guess I'll just have to keep chawin' on them thar deloxious coca leaves.

I really enjoyed JC2 and felt like JC3 was the same but a few more features/weapons/vehicles. Nothing crazy different but I do enjoy the new grapple features actually. It's the main way I get around the game, especially with the wing suit. Gotta say, the more I hear about Wildlands, the more I want it. The AI during the beta were good for the most part for me but did have a few times where I wasn't being healed in time or they just didn't prioritize it. That mobile app sounds dope! Now if i can just justify buying another game whilst trying to finish Just Cause 3, Witcher 3 and Mad Max to name a few.

I finally broke 500M sniping last night, 538M with the SR25 (T5Xi scope), ghillied up on a hillside overlooking some Unidad airbase... BOOM!!1
'Long Shot' trophy achieved.
Got greedy and tried for another slob at around 600M... fucked up and stirred the hornets nest, ended up legging it as I had fuck all ammo on me following an earlier (mucho fun) shootout defending some 'coca-farmer rights' spokesperson.

Looking forward to finally getting a decent sniper rifle. Currently have the A95, I believe, and it's basic as hell. I'm 10 hours in and haven't found one yet. Holy jeebus this game is gonna be one I'll be enjoying for a while. And I just remembered they launched the weekly challenges today for PC.

Naaahhhh. It's most definitely not a 2.5 . It has some flaws here and there but nothing to cripple the game play like that. Besides they just released a new patch for consoles and PC as well as introducing some new weekly challenges and content. I feel they heard that some of the game was a bit too "grindy" when it comes to side missions but hopefully these challenges will fix that up. Personally I don't mind the grind for a game like this. The world is HUGE!

I'd like to think I'm quite a discerning gamer after nearly 30 years of experience - 2.5/10 is laughable, I'm not even going to waste my time reading the review.

Although, I wasted some time reading through it lol. But yeah, I've stopped listening to critics of both film and video games for the most part. Anywho, I'm chomping at the bit right now to get home and play some more Wildlands. Spent a lot of time on Overwatch with their new game mode that I totally spaced about the new challenges. Have you had a chance to get in on any of those?

Nah, I'm still haven't even patched it from launch yet... Seeing lots of buttmad on Reddit about the DLC, not that I usually bother with the stuff. Quite happy playing the game 'as is' at the moment, although I have a couple of niggles - when I spawn one dialogue (from a previously completed mission) plays quite often, not really a problem but the second is that a number of buildings containing skillpoints/upgrades etc are completely sealed with no apparent way inside, although this may be related to story progression as I've not seen any other comments about it.
