So lately I have been trying these really hard games people talk about from time to time.
Teleglitch Die More Edition is visually based off of quake 1 and I haven't got passed level 3 yet
Barony is an Eye of the Beholder/Daggerfall/Roguelike that I have enjoyed quite a bit. I really dig these kinds of old school RPGs and it is extremely difficult at first. Haven't made it passed the 8th floor.
I also have Devil Daggers but it is more of a time trial. It again gets the gritty 90s Quake-esque feeling down and if it was a full game it would be amazing but it is just a time trial thing with no real content.
Anyone else play any of these kinds of games?

Risk of Rain is one I've been enjoying a lot, first on the PC, later even more on the PS Vita.

Spelunky is good, dungeon diving type of game with lots of looting and RPG type stuff, it's pretty addicting.
Faster Than Light also good, basically you're in control of a spaceship and have to maintain it with your crew. You'll come under attack while traveling through space, and have to seal off hull breaches, manage the ship's systems, etc. Ship blows up = permadeath.

So I was playing Barony tonight, because it has an old school vibe it lists items by number. So like cursed is -2 or -1, crappy items are 0, +1 and above are good quality. My character starts with a +2 axe. I was on the 2nd floor and I got an amulet of poison resistance, then I run into a boss spider with a name. I assumed I was going to die but instead the spider couldn't hurt me due to the amulet. Killed the spider and I got a sword that was freaking +8 magical. The best weapon I had ever seen before this was +5 and non-magical. I attacked an enemy and it lit him on fire. I was tearing everything apart. Made it much farther in the game then before. Lower in the dungeon tho I flipped a switch but I wasn't paying attention and a bolder crushed me Such is life in roguelikes.

Finished Barony. Got totally lucky with RNG as is usual in these games. Loaded up my character with magic reflection gear and saved a ton of health potions for the final boss. Solid game.

I like Dungeons of Dredmor. Kind of a typical RPG dungeon crawler but I have fun with it. Permadeath is an option and is the only way I play it. Spelunky is a lot of fun as well.

When you first play it you are like "damn this is impossibly hard" but once you figure out the mechanics its more manageable.

Not an indie game, but if you beat Wolfenstein II it unlocks another difficulty called Mein Leben (reference to the original game).
It's the same as the highest difficulty but you get 1 life and have to start all over again if you die, it actually returns you to the main menu.

Heh, good timing on reviving this thread as I'm currently playing Risk of Rain again. It's not that hard anymore now that I've unlocked everything and can play the game with all kinds of modifiers and especially free item selection. Playing it the slassic, unmodified way is still hard as shit if you don't get some good power-ups right from the start though. But it's not as much fun.

I haven't played Barony in a while but it is a solid game. When you first play it you are like "damn this is impossibly hard" but once you figure out the mechanics its more manageable. A few days ago, they released a major update for Barony with 50% more content (Barony: "Blessed Addition"). Looks like there's a price increase as well... But the new content is free if you already own the game on Steam. That's good policy... unlike other publishers who punish their supporters with too many over-priced DLC's. "Barony now costs $14.99. A price increase is rarely popular, but we feel like Barony is worth it! We hope you do too. Those of you that have been supporting Barony from the beginning will obviously not be affected." store.steampowered.com/news/externalpost/steam_community_announcements/2365952982541249534

They added a ton of crap. They added a new classes including a ninja with a stealth/backstab mechanic. You get a VERY strong backstab sword but it breaks after a couple of uses, I don't quite get the mechanic quite yet.

Since someone revived this thread, I recently noticed my Risk of Rain playing time on the PS Vita... 137 hours, EEK! And another 21 hours on Steam (actual in-game playing time. Steam playing time says 68 hours, don't know where that comes from).
