store.steampowered.com/app/367670/$3 app on Steam that lets you control your entire desktop with a controller, including typing (though it's a lot slower). Also lets you download or create custom profiles for games that only support keyboard/mouse by default, I got really far in Deus Ex 1 with controller. By default it supports XB360/XBO controllers, only supports Playstation 3/4 or other controllers if using an Xbox 360 controller emulator. Only thing that I wish it had was different ways to do alt keys. By default, "select" is the only alt button (press and hold before pressing another button for a different function). There is currently no way to make "select" something else or to have multiple alt combinations, but they will hopefully work that in later. It's not perfect but a great buy for $3. I think Valve should have just done something like this already. Also it works without Steam running. *edit* Steam now actually has built-in support for controller configuration (including for the desktop) for a while now, so you may want to consider that before paying $3 for this app. Steam's solution also has way more options, but back when I bought CC, Steam didn't have that type of functionality built in yet.

Being able to use your PC from couch browse the internet, Netflix or Youtube, and launch games without having to get up and use the keyboard/mouse.

Guess it's me being oldfashioned, when I'm using the PC, I'm sitting at a desk with the keyboard/mouse in front of me. Haven't even considered the fact doing things otherwise...
All I can say is using the Youtube app on the PS3 with a controller or on the SMART TV with the remote is all kinds of suck. I can't believe that ever caught on.

Once nice improvement they've made with the PS4 pad is the ability to control the cursor with motion, so much faster once you get used to it.

Still, back when I bought this $3 app, Steam didn't have this functionality built-in yet. Never understood peoples' frustration about reviving ("necro'ing") old threads (except when someone does it and posts off topic, of course). I usually do the same thing (add to an existing thread, instead of creating a new one, if the topic is similar enough). imo, it's more efficient than cluttering up the board with new threads. Also, I noticed on other sites, people complaining about people creating new threads, when there are threads (or questions & answers) already existing on the same topic. So it would seem, on some boards, creating new threads (on existing topics) is taboo and necro'ing old ones is the preferred way. oh well, can't please everybody all the time.

Some people work in front of a PC all day long and sitting in front of a PC after work, even to play games, can get tiresome. Also, there's a scientific reason for why (it's a good thing). Viewing a tv from a distance is easier on the eyes (vs. up close to a PC). Ideally, if you want to preserve your eyesight and delay having to get reading glasses, it's a good practice to look away from your PC every 20 minutes and rest your eyes for a couple of minutes (or simply spend less time at your PC during the day).

Well CC is still very useful, for one, when it's installed you don't need to have Steam running in order to use it. Which is good if for any reason, you don't want Steam running but still want to control your desktop remotely with an Xbox controller. CC also still works better for setting mouse scroll to D-Pad or analog stick, when setting that up in Steam for example, analog stick has to be configured as a D-pad, otherwise you have to actually rotate the analog stick clockwise or counter-clockwise to scroll. Also it's jerky when scrolling with the analog stick set up as a D-pad. CC doesn't have that problem. And yeah I do agree about sitting in front of a PC too long, Steam Link is great and I've been playing games from the living room instead on the big 4K TV. Much more comfortable for games that were designed with a controller in mind. I think the TV actually upscales the picture, things like trees or anything with small details seems to stand out more compared to my 1080p monitor.

Once nice improvement they've made with the PS4 pad is the ability to control the cursor with motion, so much faster once you get used to it. I never got used to that feature. Seems too sensitive and you're still limited by floating a cursor over 1 letter at a time. By any objective standard, it's slow compared to typing on a keyboard. However, Sony already took care of that complaint and offers PS4 support for keyboard & mouse (wired or bluetooth). support.us.playstation.com/articles/en_US/KC_Article/Use-Keyboard-and-Mouse-with-PS4Also, limited hdd space on the PS3 was an issue for some people because it only supported internal hdd's of up to 1TB and didn't allow playing games from an external hdd. That's not much hdd space for games, even in the PS3 era. But again, Sony remedied that problem on the PS4, with a software update sometime last year that allows playing (downloaded) games from an external USB hdd. So, for instance, you could upgrade your PS4's internal hdd to 2TB and add a 4TB or 5TB external usb hdd, etc.

Steam Links can be had for quite cheap at times as well. As with everything Valve they're a little bit buggy.
The Steam Controller is quite good and versatile and it's surprisingly not-terrible at FPS'. Although a mouse will always stomp a controller. The only bad thing is the trackpads have a horrendous clunk when pressed, it's a shame they weren't updated with the trackpads from the Vive Wands.

Some of the negative reviews say that Steam Link has problems (lag?) when connecting it through WiFi network and you need a wired connection for it to work effectively. In my experience, the same holds true for PS3 & PS4... connecting through WiFi sucks, the speed is slow and you get frequent dropped connections. I've never used an expensive gaming router. I guess those can do WiFi better, but I didn't want to spend that much. So instead, I bought a few of those Netgear powerline adapters. These are cheaper than a gaming router and gives you close to the performance of a wired connection (well, it basically is a wired connection, except the data is transmitted through your home/apartment in-wall power lines). www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=netgear+powerline

A friend of mine has the regular Steam Link and for some reason he was having a lot of input lag, even on wired. I was reading somewhere that it requires some TV's to be set to Game Mode and that will reduce or eliminate the lag.
Samsung smart TV's from 2016 and newer have a free Steam Link app, I use it and it works very well. The first time I ever connected it was on Wifi and there was not much lag (the TV is right next to the wireless router) but the picture quality wasn't so good. After I switched to wired, there is no noticeable lag and the picture quality looks a lot better.

After I switched to wired, there is no noticeable lag and the picture quality looks a lot better. I think that's true, because I've read that much of input lag issues has to do with the brand & model of tv. They say, on some of the 4K TV's (Sony 2017 models, like i purchased not too long ago), the input lag worsens if it's upscaling from 720P or 1080P to 4K. On the other hand, the Sony 4k tv's are said to have some of the best image quality when upscaling. You're lucky though, since I read Samsung tv's don't have that issue (increased lag from upscaling). In online reviews, the image quality isn't as highly rated as some Sony models. But when I look at them in the store, the Samsung tv's look pretty damned good imo.

I bought it locally at Best Buy during the Black Friday sales last year, which I'd never gone shopping for Black Friday before.
I really wanted to play Metro 2033 Redux on it but it has some kind of problem through Steam Link where it drifts when you move using the controller, which makes it quite unplayable. If I play it on the PC without streaming to the TV, it works fine.
