So my Moto X Pure Experience has served me well for the past 2.5 years. Since the turn to 2018 the battery life has taken a nose dive and it gets extremely warm to the touch when you charge it, it has also slowed down considerably going from Android 5.1.1 to Android 7.0
I decided not to go budget but instead go all out and get a flagship. The "best phone" is debatable but the Samsung Galaxy S9+ is always somewhere up there in the ranks:
So far I am underwhelmed. I got all my stuff over and transferred with zero issues but its having a bit of trouble auto-connecting to my car stereo via bluetooth. My Moto X Pure had no such issues. The screen is bigger then my Moto X Pure but it doesn't look like it.
It is very slippery to hold so I am going to really need to get a good case I think. Never bothered with a case on any other phone.
While it is fast with the latest CPU it is not as fast as I thought it would be.
Meh. I would highly recommend a budget phone for your average person.

Meh. I would highly recommend a budget phone for your average person. Well duh! That being said, still using my Nokia 3100 from 2003. I'm on my 3rd battery, always managed to Frankenstein them from discarded phones. Still lasts about a week in standby.

I send an occasional text message. Sounds like you're proud to be in the minority, at least in 1st world countries (where most people own smart phones). I occasionally use google and gps/maps when traveling out of state by car. I've tried a few apps as well. I've found some of them can be quite useful. For example, there's an app called "TripCase", which can notify friends/family of your travel status, sending them lightening fast updates regarding your airline/flight status. Meaning, you don't have to bother manually checking the flight status & texting/relaying the info to the person who is going to pick you up from the airport. Another reason I like this sort of app is that I'm not crazy about texting and having to frequently correct the autocomplete. Nokia fell to the wayside a while back and are no longer a dominant leader in the telecom industry because they were also slow to adopt smart phone technology. And when they finally did and tried to play catch up, they partnered with Microsoft/Windows. That was fatal mistake #2. People are slow to switch from Android and iOS, because those are the 2 platforms that most apps are made for and it's simply what they've grown accustomed to after so many years (kinda the same reasons more ppl use Windows over Linux for PC).

I have the Galaxy S8 (non +), been very happy with it so far. I upgraded from a Galaxy S3 which I'd been using for 6 or 7 years so it was a nice upgrade.
Samsung also sent me a 64 gig SD card and a very nice case for it for free.

Been a few days now more time taking it in public and playing with it. Getting a thick case has done wonders for hand feel. I don't give a fuck about looking cool with a thin phone just not dropping the thing. Anyone who would carry this kinda phone with no case is a braver man then I. Never had a phone with a fingerprint scanner. It isn't just used for unlocking but you can do gestures on the scanner to open menus. Took no time for me to get used to it. Instead of having to move your finger from another hand over to pull down the status bar you just drag your finger down the scanner and it opens. Also there is a dedicated Bixby button on the side of the phone. I downloaded a Bixby button remapper and ran and app on my laptop and now that button is a back button. Spamming the back button is basically the same as a home button. The combination of the finger print scanner and the hard back button has let me completely remove the navigation bar from the bottom of the phone for 90% of usage cases. Funny been using Android phones one way for 7 years and in a couple days using it a totally different way and it feels 100% natural. EDIT: Also hearing Bixby talk all I hear is Fiona from Silicon Valley

I turned off Bixby and Google Assistant, I don't trust them. Also these phones are water resistant to an extent. Dropping the phone in a puddle won't hurt, as long as it doesn't stay in there too long. I remember seeing a video on YT where they were testing the water resistance of the S8, and they dropped it in a river. It stayed at the bottom for some time but when they retrieved it, it was fine. I'm glad they're making these new phones kind of waterproof, I had an older phone that stopped working just from getting a little bit wet. The case that Samsung sent me has a cover that flips over the front of the phone, having it closed turns off the screen but the clock still shows. It can also be un-folded and it becomes a stand-case. The cover doesn't look like it's see-through but you can still see the clock through it when it's closed, and touch still works through it so you can change music tracks. Here's the free case that Samsung sent me: www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-S-View-Cover-Kickstand/dp/B06XJ296JS
