Ohio is the main distribution point for opioids in the U.S. The drug crisis is bad even in smaller towns and suburbs in the rust belt states and it's no surprise that neighboring states have widespread drug problems. My younger brother was an A student in middle school through part of high school, then he chose to get with the wrong crowd and do drugs. After years of drug use and coming close to death probably a dozen (or more) times from OD'ing, he's a schizo basket-case and believes the govt is out to get him. Increasing drug use doesn't get you more voters or convert people to the left. It gets you more disfunctional people who drop out as productive members of society (less tax $'s to fund big government) and they generally don't give a shit about voting. Chinese history and the Opium wars are interesting. It's interesting how the drug problem has shifted from east to west (once upon a time, the west/Great Britain fought wars so that they could sell Opium in China). Today, China manufactures opioids and distributes them to the west. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opium_WarsAsian countries had drug crisis long before the west. It worked out so well for them too. Take a look at how they deal with it now. drugabuse.com/the-20-countries-with-the-harshest-drug-laws-in-the-world/

You have mentioned your brother before, its a sad case for sure. I doubt that opiates did that to him, meth however will mess you up. Taking meth + not eating = brain damage in a very short period of time. Some people with serious pain issues will take 100+ mgs of Oxycodone daily, enough to kill a person with no experience with the drug. Yet they can live productive lives and don't become schizo. I've never had meth even in my college party days, I was down to try anything but that stuff. Trying regular amphetamines was enough for me. Was fun for about 15 minutes then got serious racing thoughts and was irritable for the rest of the night. No thanks, I don't enjoy paying money to feel like shit.

The sad thing is, you can tell that she wasn't always like that. Probably was a cheerleader once upon a time, maybe ran track or played volleyball.
Prescription drugs are definitely dangerous too, last time I got hurt and went to the doctor they prescribed me 4 different kinds of painkillers, I think one of them even made me faint one time and I took the normal dose. Doctors love to overprescribe pain medications, they probably get their pockets lined more if they do. The pharmacist even said I could take those things together, got home and looked it up, turned out any combination of those things could have bad interactions. I actually went back to tell him about it, I worry about others who might have taken that kind of advice without double checking.
I used to get these really bad headaches and got prescribed something called Fioricet, now those I almost got addicted to.

He did both (he confessed to using to meth to one of our Uncles once). The schizo/delusional type of crazy might have started after he used meth, I can't be sure. However, opiates can also lead to brain damage or death... because when a person OD's on opiates, their breathing slows or stops, leading to oxygen deprivation (causing brain damage or death). He's OD'd on heroin many times (probably a dozen times that I've heard about). I was there once when this happened and had to administer mouth to mouth CPR until the ambulance arrived. Another instance, when I wasn't there, a neighbor did the same and kept him alive until the ambulance showed. Fortunately, I had taken a CPR class during my earlier college days, so I know how to check for breathing, pulse, and give CPR. The paramedics immediately put him on a ventilator when they arrived, so you can rest assured that he stopped breathing to the point that it could've resulted in brain damage.. There were many times me or the neighbor wasn't there to administer CPR before an ambulance arrived, so brain damage from heroin use is highly likely.

Oh yeah if you pass out from respiratory depression and stop breathing for sure that can cause serious issues. Opiates themselves don't cause brain damage like meth will as a matter of course. Sounds like he really went off the deep end with needle use. I mentioned on here before I had a friend who was a very stereotypical computer nerd and when he got into meth he finally felt like he was cool and in charge for the first time in his whole life. He sold his gaming PC for more money for drugs and had some serious criminal charges last time we talked back in like 2004. No idea if he ever got his shit together or not.

Meth is awful stuff but I would highly recommend driving out to the middle of nowhere in Fairbanks Alaska in the winter and taking mushrooms right when the Northern Lights come out. Great fun:

Not trying to sound like a smart ass here, but it's called the "Opioid Crisis" for a reason. Heroin is dangerously addictive, it causes people to do crazy things (including against their family & loved ones) to get their fix, and people are dropping like flies OD'ing on it.

Get no argument from me Heroin is awful. Did you know it doesn't cause liver failure or wet brain like alcohol does tho?

With universal healthcare, you'd be covering the costs for everybody in the irresponsible category (people who smoke, never or rarely exercise, drink excessively, consume too much sugar, partake in dangerous hobbies like crotch-rocket racing, etc.). Such behaviors lead to higher medical costs and the more responsible ppl are the ones who wind up paying for them. Just a thought.

My sister had to get surgery a few years ago, she is a Nurse. Last time I checked Nursing is a respectable job. They told her "oh btw before we do the surgery we need $4,000 cash up front" Also tomorrow if you have a power tripping boss who fires you BAM! No healthcare for you. I wish we had universal coverage.

I wish we had universal coverage. If we eventually go to true universal coverage, I wouldn't oppose similar taxes on high sugar food & drinks. Also, increase taxes on cigs and alcohol to offset healthcare costs, rather than putting most of the burden on people who choose healthy lifestyles.

For police, there's a very high risk of being murdered on the job. That's why I always knew I didn't want to become a police officer. That and I don't like getting into people's faces and shouting at them (even if they're criminals). Even though they get military gear like bullet proof vests and man cops make 6 figure salaries and have police unions that defend literal murderers then claim their job is so dangerous so it justifies it all. You would think conservatives who say they are "small government" and hate tyranny would be skeptical of the cops but nope. Once again their ideology fails when put to the test and its "blue lives matter" all the way. Supposedly we have innocent until proven guilty but if you ever have a run in with the cops they will do anything in their power to seizw your property and its on YOU to prove your innocence. In one example these people took their car to an autoshop to get a repair. The repairman took it for a drive but he was on a suspended license. He got pulled over and they seized the car and now it is on the the owners to get the car back: The whole thing is government extracting wealth from people. Here you can see the cops hanging out in poor neighborhoods to give people tickets for jaywalking. Even tho the cops jaywalk on camera. They don't do this in the wealthy neighborhoods because wealthy people can afford to make a fuss about and and also good old fashioned racism: As revealed by cops on social media posts and Facebook groups a certain percent of cops legit hate black people and enjoy going out to harass them all day.

imho, it's probably mostly classism (or class warfare) than racism. I recall when I was just out of high school and driving a junker car, police would have much greater tendency to follow me around (vs later on, when I drove a decent looking car).
In some ways, it's like Trump's immigration policy. He's pro-immigration for immigrants who provide skilled labor and high income (net taxpayers), as he doubled the number of H1B work visas (vs the Obama administration) for immigrants from India (working IT jobs). But then he has the opposite stance towards poorer or low-skill immigrants.

Oh yeah don't get me started. At one point I drove a car with the paint peeling off of it and I got pulled over at least once a month. One time they told me I had a "tail light out" which is total bullshit. They were always very disappointed when they found out my insurance and registration was up to date. Once I got a nice car getting pulled over completely stopped.
