My old laptop... HP Pavilion g7-2022us 2.50GHz i5-2450m 6GB SDRAM Intel HD Graphics 3000 17.3 inch display 750GB 5400rpm drive Windows 7 (it did come with a free Win8 upgrade)
I originally bought my laptop so that I could have a cheap web browser/multimedia PC in the bedroom (think I paid $400 on sale). Later it wound up being the center of my hometheater system for streaming music/video/movies and web browsing - it doesn't have any gaming capabilities (Integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000) so no PC gaming on the big screen (Main PC is in another room). I don't know if it was the fact that over time that I updated my main PC with the latest and fastest NVME SSD drives plus two processor/ram/mobo updates and maybe Windows updates on the laptop (Windows 7) slowed it down over time or if it was a little of both but my laptop is feeling really slow these days, in fact, Firefox even gives a warning that its detecting itself starting slow. The keyboard no longer seems to work (I use a wireless keyboard anyway since the laptop sits hidden under the TV stand) but that could just need a driver reinstall, don't know, didn't really investigate since I use a wireless keyboard anyway. The older I get and the larger my bank account grows the more I notice I become a cheapskate. Sure I could buy any laptop at any price point that I wanted right now paid for in cash but then I would stress that my bank account just got smaller instead of larger, lol. So I was almost thinking (with a caveat) instead of selling off my old videocard/parts when I upgrade my main PC in the future (whenever that will be, my factory overclocked 1080GTX is still rocking anything I throw at it @ 1440p and don't really see an upgrade coming until maybe at least a year later from now?) that I could just assemble a second desktop out of spare parts (as of now I just need a PSU, VGA, and Case) and have a much faster system than a laptop that's also much more repairable and upgradeable over the years (simply swap over my old parts as I upgrade my main system). What's the caveat there? Well there are times when an easily mobile PC came in handy like when I flashed a custom tune in my car so then there's that - there's some advantage to having a laptop on hand. So should I just forgo thinking of gaming on the laptop but still get a more modern and up to date laptop like this one MSRP $749 on sale for $499 that at least has an nvidia graphics chip this time around? Because yea, I tried putting Windows 10 on my current laptop before but....no video drivers for the Intel Graphics 3000 and it ran like shit. www.walmart.com/ip/Acid-FHD-NVIDIA-GDDR5-HP-Shadow-GTX-3-Intel-GeForce-Pavilion-Black-8GB-GB-Core-1050-i5-9300H-SSD-15-dk0068wm-Laptop-Green-256GB-SDRAM-15-6-Gaming/578241214?irgwc=1&sourceid=imp_V5CVdp05UxyOWVFwUx0Mo38QUkn16VyFLwauXE0&veh=aff&wmlspartner=imp_159047&clickid=V5CVdp05UxyOWVFwUx0Mo38QUkn16VyFLwauXE0HP Pavilion 15.6" FHD Gaming Laptop, Intel Core i5-9300H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 (3 GB GDDR5), 8GB SDRAM, 256GB SSD, Shadow Black, Acid Green, 15-dk0068wm (only 256GB HD is kind of a turn off but I guess it's better than getting a larger slower standard drive) This is a little better for a little more... MSRP $999.99 Laptop was on sale a few days ago for $699 but not on sale anymore.... www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-g3-15-6-gaming-laptop-intel-core-i5-8gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1660ti-512gb-solid-state-drive-black/6350872.p?skuId=6350872Comes with a better VGA (GTX 1660Ti) and a 512gb SSD.... I'm definitely 100% getting the Galaxy S11 on release day so I almost would rather save the money for the new smart device (I hate calling them phones anymore since that's the least amount of use I use them for since nobody talks on the phone anymore), it will have 8k video recording, 100x zoom, laser autofocus, multiple lenses, etc. and I value having a great camera and powerful device on me everywhere that I go so hmmm what to do? I don't think I'd be overly happy with most gaming on the big screen because of the feeling of input lag compared to my Gsync 144hz monitor but some slower paced games are OK enough I suppose. So do I...
A) Buy a laptop as cheap as possible with a nvidia graphics chip and don't bother with gaming with it (would be nice to play 'some' games on the big screen from time-to-time)
B) Buy a better mid-tier laptop that could run most modern games at 1080p (albeit my TV is 4k)
C) Just assemble a second desktop over the coming months/years with spare parts from upgrading my main PC (but lose the mobile use of a laptop like in the example of flashing tunes in my car - yes, apparently the built in keyboard in my current laptop is no longer working and who knows how much longer the rest of the device is going to last since it's from the Windows 7 era....did I get my monies worth out of it? Is it time to lay it to rest?)

Slickdeals.net is very much a click bait site (all about maximizing user clicks and their ad revenue). I have clicked links you posted to that site (and often, immediately after you post it) many times and the deal already expired.

I don't bother with refurbished stuff after I got a refurbished Galaxy S7 as a replacement for my original one and it wound up being much worse (it would overheat and restart while filming where my original didn't do that) so I think stuff gets refurb'd for a reason, I'd rather get brand spanking new then you know what you got.

The GTX 1050 is great for older games and emulators. My Dell XPS-15 has a 1050 and it runs Neverwinter Nights at ultrawide 3440x resolution, max in-game settings, x8 AA at solid 75fps. I tried 100fps and there was some stuttering. However, 100fps on my laptop setup requires overclocking my monitor, so the issue could be due to limitations of the monitor.
If you get an Nvidia based laptop that requires Nvidia's mobile graphics drivers, then the graphics options are limited. Games will run like shit out of the box and no amount of tweaking the limited graphics options in the Nvidia control panel will fix this. You'll need to download a program like "Nvidia Profile Inspector" to restore access to the hidden graphics settings (including V-Sync options, like Adaptive V-Sync), in order to get the most out of your games.
The Dell XPS-15 can be setup as a Mobile hotspot, which can be configured as WiFi or Bluetooth hotspot. i.e. WiFi or Bluetooth devices can connect to the laptop directly. I think this allows things like streaming your PC/games to your HDTV. I recall Zombie saying something, in another thread, about Samsung TV's having this feature. Seems like that would add latency though and probably not ideal for competitive gaming.

My daily driver laptop was $2,000 and I got it refurbed from newegg for $1,300. The fact that I put 1,000 hours into PUBG which is a bitch of a game to run should let you know its worked out well for me.

There is reddit style upvote and downvote so luckily the shitty deals are usually filtered. There has in the past been issues with vendors not honoring things to be fair but that is very few and far in between.

I think you're chancing it with Refurb products. Depends on who you're buying from and their return policy. Amazon is pretty good with returns (including their "Prime" partners). If you buy from a non-Prime seller going through Amazon though, you have to deal directly with that seller and some of them try to screw you. For example, I bought some pillow cases through a non-Prime seller on Amazon and the stitching was defective/missing. The seller tried to have me send the product to India for the return, where the shipping cost (which they expected me to pay) was actually more than the price of the product itself. After back & forth messages a couple of times, I left a negative review. After a few weeks, they finally agreed to issue a refund in exchange for retracting my review. lol
One laptop manufacturer to look out for and possibly avoid is MSI. Opening an MSI laptop, even to upgrade the RAM or swap an SSD, automatically voids the manufacturer warranty. Most other laptop mfg's don't have this ridiculous policy.

I almost bought this laptop a few times: www.amazon.com/Acer-Predator-PH517-61-R0GX-Processor-Graphics/dp/B07GWX5X26/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8It has a 144 hz screen and a 1070 level AMD graphics card, the real cool thing is it has a desktop Ryzen CPU in it. Amazing performance for a laptop. You can actually drop in a 2700x and it works fine, in theory you could put in a 3700 and it would run fine, it isn't supported tho People are holding out hope that AMD will release a BIOS that supports higher Ryzens. My dream laptop would be a a 2070 + Ryzen 3000 series desktop CPU. I keep holding out hope. I am on a 1070 right now and I can't see myself upgrading to a new laptop unless it is at least a 2070.

Ok so my old laptop is dead - to make a long story short, I ended the night last night by stomping the damned thing with my foot, lol. I'm going to do a slow-mo video of sledge hammering it into billions of pieces - stay tuned, lol. So anyway, I just bought this laptop for $400 off: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1462365-REG/lenovo_81sx000fus_15_6_legion_y540_gaming.html 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-9750H Six-Core 16GB DDR4 RAM | 1TB PCIe M.2 SSD 15.6" 1920 x 1080 144 Hz IPS Display NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 GPU (6GB) Price $1,599.00 Sale Price:$1,199.00 Think I did good? I also have a new Denon AVR-X3600H (2019 model) for $200 off at Crutchfield to upgrade my old X4000 that only did 30hz at 4k (HDMI1.4) since my laptop is the center of my hometheater for streaming and multimedia and I now have a 4k 75 inch TV I needed a AVR that could do better than 30Hz at 4k.

I had to check one thing, and it looks like nVidia actually uses the same names for both laptop and desktop GPUs. Just clocking about an average of one third faster in the PC, which is very acceptable.
The CPU is as good as it gets pretty much, and with six physical cores you don't get any of the performance robbing ameliorations for security that Intel and Microsoft have pushed for the hyper-threading CPUs. That thing will fly. Edit: Oh, it does have hyper-threading. So, even faster. laptoping.com/cpus/product/intel-core-i7-9750h/
A very nicely balanced laptop, at 1080p the 2060 will push even demanding games and the high refresh rate will allow for excellent twitch gaming. 16 GB of ram is more than enough for a Windows 10 gaming laptop, and 1TB PCIe M.2 SSD means you'll get very fast loading times in games, as little pop-in as possible in games, and with enough storage space that this can double as a primary unit.
I hope you grabbed the "Get FREE Lenovo Legion Ultimate Support With The Purchase Of This Model (59.00 Value) See Details!. Offer Ends: Dec 31 '19 " Download PDF" offer.

Ok, first things first... I said that I would be back with a laptop smashing video and I like to keep my promises so here....lol...
That piece of shit will never bother me again...hehe.
Now onto my new laptop....it's good, very good. So good that in fact I'm actually contemplating going forward from here on in the future of not even building custom desktop systems myself anymore and just getting the fastest laptop at the best price and calling it a day! Yea I'm getting old and lazy... Back in the Win98se days I would format once a month just for the fun of it... these days I loathe doing a clean format every six years, lol. I'd also rather just buy something ready to go out of the box and just have to uninstall a few bloatware programs and be on my way! The way I see it, when I upgrade my videocard I also normally upgrade the CPU, Mobo, and Ram anyway and the nice thing about a laptop is it kinda forces you to upgrade nearly everything like new m.2 SSD drives for example not to mention my $300 Asus super duper elite mobo doesn't even have wi-fi or blutooth built in and you get all that built into the laptop.
This new laptop is very fast and with the $400 discount really was the icing on the cake and allowed for funds to upgrade my AVR that could only pass 30hz at 4k. With my new laptop and AVR 4k looks damned good and sharp compared to running it at 1080p on my old setup. The laptop can surely play games well, but no more than at 1440p. At pretty much max graphics at 1440p MXGP 2019 never drops below 60fps (vsync enabled). Shadow of the Tomb Raider at near max graphics settings does dip down to 54fps at 1440p in the Hidden City but does bounce above 60fps well and the fps dip doesn't seem to affect gameplay or smoothness on the 60Hz display. No screen tearing or anything. I don't know is turning off DLSS would improve frame rate because I'd didn't have enough time to test every single setting but I will say that Raytracing seems like a joke! For example, turning on Raytracing in Shadow of the Tomb Raider actually seems to lower the graphics quality over normal shadows at the Ultra setting and drops the fps down in the 30/35fps range in the Hidden City. For example, normal shadows Raytracing off = nice sharp distinctive shadow patterns of leaves being cast on the ground and with Raytracing on (even set to Ultra) those same sharp and distinctive shadows disappear and actually looks closer to normal shadows set to low or off! So I think this game actually looks better with normal shadows set to the highest setting! Plus you get average 30fps faster!
But even though I originally I wasn't even going to get a laptop this fast... I was just looking to just get something new with Windows 10 (to be able to use the Netflix app with multichannel sound), a nvidia graphics chip (for longer and better driver support and more resolution and graphics options) and it was just to be the central multimedia device for my hometheater system for movie, tv show, and music streaming and not really for games but this laptop makes me crave more so I'm actually looking for a good sale price on a nice 2080 laptop and return this one. I mean don't get me wrong, it will be many years before I have a 75" 4k display that can do over 60hz if I ever upgrade but I'm just thinking something more future proof that will be able to play future games at near max or max settings at 1440p (is a 2080 capable of solid 60fps 4 gaming?). Yea, my PS4 Pro has been sold and gone, my new laptop doubles as a gaming console and it is so much faster and smoother running than the PS4 Pro with a much sharper image and the plus side is all my PC games library from Steam, to Origin, to Microsoft Store, to Epic Games Store is available on it - even some of the games that I bought the PS4 Pro for like Beyond Two Souls and Detroit Become Human is now on the Epic Games Store.....so much for PS4 exclusives...lol.
But it's so good.....soooo goooood.....it just makes me want moar!!!~~~ So this laptop's original price is $1,599.00 and I got it for $1,199.00 so it's going to cost around $800 to jump up to a laptop with a RTX 2080 non-max q and then it seems at the 2k price point you only seem to either get a 256GB or 512GB SSD with a standard mechanical drive so possibly add in the cost of a 1TB SSD to replace the stupid mechanical drive so would it be worth the jump when I have a more dedicated gaming PC in the other room with a 144hz gaming monitor? Well... some more laid back games like Tomb Raider are fine a 60fps/hz but...just thinking maintaining the power to run at 60fps/1440p going into the future and not just games from now and behind.... I should of just got a cheap $500 laptop with a geforce 1050 or something and forgot about gaming on it and just stuck to the original plan because now that I have one that can basically stay above 50fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at near max graphics settings in one of the most demanding maps in the game...I just want to make sure I have a little more headroom for future proofing gaming on it....lol.
It is a nice clean looking laptop and none of that gaudy gaming look.....
New AVR....

I would always plan on using an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse with a laptop! (unless traveling of course). Max-Q is stupid, it just adds more confusion and seems like a way to scam consumers? My 2060 can basically be called a 2080 Max-Q...lol. Yea, fuck the 2060 and 2070 in any alphabet form....might as well just go for the gusto and get the 2080!

Get a top of the line laptop, add a good gaming monitor, keyboard, and mouse and you basically have the same power as a desktop. I don't think I could ever game on a laptop display though, my 27" 1440p display still looks tiny dropping down from a 43" 4k display! 17/16"....way too small for me for me! 27" absolute minimum here!

Ok so it's actually been a while since I've fired up Shadow of the Tomb Raider on my main gaming desktop (once I beat it I didn't have any desire to play it again) and my factory over clocked 1080 GTX in which I boost the core +85MHz and memory +550MHz over top the factory OC with my overclocked 6700k at 4.5Ghz only nets an average of 5fps more in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at similar graphics settings at 1440p in the Hidden City so the laptop at default settings and clockspeeds definitely seems like a rocketship for a small device with everything pretty much integrated! My 75" 4k HDR screen looks much better too....just doesn't have the response time! So I think laid back casual gaming will be done on my laptop/home theater system (with 9k in speakers alone) kicked back on the couch and the more hardcore online multiplayer stuff like Unreal or MXGP2019 will be done on my desktop with the faster display! I actually thought that my desktop would have much higher framerate than the lappy....surprised it was only 5fps faster! I'm wondering if overclocking the GPU in the laptop would close the gap?
One minute...
I just set the clocks on my 1080 GTX back to the factory OC speeds and Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the same exact framerate as the laptop now, lol. Like literally both dip down to 54fps in the Hidden City. Neither get near 100% CPU utilization I think I seen a short peak of 84% on one core so both CPU have the balls to push higher performing GPU's... So if the laptop RTX 2060 is on par with my factory OC'd dedicated desktop 1080GTX I would have to think that a 2080 Laptop would completely destroy my desktop! So my current desktop and laptop seem to be around equal gaming performance at 1440p. Maybe the 1080GTX would pull away at higher resolutions with 2GB more ram but I'm too lazy to test and neither can really do 4k good anyway....
Hmmm... so if I'm happy with my desktop and my new laptop performs basically the same, maybe I should just be happy with this laptop for the price that I paid? My 75" Tv will do 120Hz at 1080p in which I've played UT online before and 120Hz/fps is good enough for competitive play and I'm sure the laptop will do 120fps easily at 1080p but....a 2080 is giving me horny feelings....hehe....want moar performance!!!~~~~ It's never good enough!!!!~~~ hehe.
What do you guys think I should do? It don't want to have to ship this back and would rather return it in person but wouldn't want to make the 3hr round trip to come back empty handed to have to order somewhere else since they don't have that nice cheap Omen with the 2080 RTX in stock right now and don't feel like going over 2k...and really can't since some of my budget went to a new AVR and sometimes you just have to put your foot down on money spending and set a limit (hard for me to do but I'm trying to continously make the bank account grow instead of shrink, lol)

Well I was thinking about exchanging the laptop all day for one with the RTX 2080 because I'm greedy and can never be happy, lol, but I was just looking at their return policy section and.... Nonreturnable Items
- Opened TVs, combos and monitors 37" and larger — original packaging cannot be unsealed
- Opened computers and computer software — original packaging cannot be unsealed
- Electronic software downloads
- Opened consumable items (e.g., film, tapes, paper, bulbs, CD, DVDs, ink cartridges, etc.)
- Any computers built or modified by B&H to customer specifications
- Select special-order merchandise, or any item indicated on the website as nonreturnable
- Underwater equipment that has been submerged
- Opened or unwrapped educational tapes and book
So it looks like I might not be able to take it back after all but I guess just for shits I'll call them tomorrow just out of curiosity and ask about "Exchanging" it for something else - doesn't hurt to ask even if I have to pay a restocking fee.
If you have the bandwidth I took a couple 4k60fps videos of the gameplay on my 75" TV to show how this one runs....
Shadow of the tomb Raider @ 1440p:
This is one of the hardest to run area's in the game since it's so large and it barely falls below 60fps for a few seconds. Indoor and other areas I've tried I haven't seen it dip at all....
MXGP2019....
Doesn't dip below the vsync refresh rate of 60Hz at all.......
With only a 60Hz display, should I just forget about the RTX 2080 or should I be thinking the added power will future proof me a lot longer....? I'd have to add about $749.50 on top of the price of this laptop and I would drop down to only a 512GB SSD but would gain Bluetooth 5.0 instead of version 4.1 which seems kinda old for a 2019 model. The larger 17" screen doesn't matter because I won't be using it lol... Everything else is about on par, same processor and everything.... Just the SSD gets cut in half, larger screen, newer Bluetooth revision....
What's your guys professional opinion? Keep this one and be happy with it or make an attempt to ask them to exchange it towards the better one with the 2080? lol...

IIRC You already have a desktop 2080ti, so just be happy with your current laptop I guess. Nope, I have a 1080GTX in my desktop. Knowing that, does that change the verdict?

Ok so buying a new laptop was a complete waste - I've been able to reposition my desktop and run a HDMI cable to the hometheater system and with a USB extension cord for the controller and a wireless mouse and keyboard I can use my dekstop on both, my 144Hz 1440p Asus desktop gaming monitor and my 75" 4k HDR TV - best of both worlds (anything that demands response time and sitting at a desk like online twitch shooters I can switch to the 144Hz monitor and when I want to be more immersed in a single player game I can switch to the 75"/couch) and both with plenty of desktop 2080Ti OC power!
Now what do I do with the brand new laptop? Sell it at a loss? Keep it for a backup rig? Hmm... I wouldn't mind getting a Mavic Pro Drone in place of the laptop.... and the latest flagship Samsung smartphone will be out soon which I plan on getting because I'm a smartphone camera nut...

I guess I have no choice but to take a loss on it since it's opened and used, but does $900 sound like a fair price?
