Carz aer ghey! Yarr... I don't even know how to drive. I enjoy racing cars (in video games). In real life though, cars do suxors in many ways and are a necessary evil (for most Americans, anyway). Maintaining an old car or making payments on a new one is a substantial monetary burden. Driving is a stress-inducing chore (especially if you have to do it almost daily, commuting in traffic). It's bad for the environment too (unless you drive a fully electric car). Good for you, brother. I'm glad you're fortunate enough to reap the advantages of not owning a car.

If I could (if my current car lasted long enough), I would wait for the new technologies to develop and lower in price (especially, fully self-driving/computer controlled & electric tech) before purchasing my next vehicle.

Driven one car in my life, an MG Maestro, about twenty years ago for two minutes... Filled it with dust after ragging the engine around a carpark and got told I was never touching it again. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_MaestroI remember those things

One year for my birthday - I don't recall the age but it was when you can begin to learn to drive in the UK so 16/17 - my Mum gave me a set of "L" (Learner) plates and money for driving lessons. I took this dosh and at the very next available opportunity purchased an N64 with GoldenEye & second banana-yellow controller... YEEEEEAAAAAAH!

Yea I couldn't survive without a vehicle. My work commute is two hours round trip. BT, how do you get to work? How do you go grocery shopping? How do you go anywhere? I'll make a 12hr round trip in one day just to go to a motocross race.... 6hr round trip to my favorite beach...etc.

Maybe it's time to exit the closet and admit that Mario games are your secret passion. NIN-TEN-DO! haha... I wanted an N64 back in the day. But the games were too pricey for my limited budget, so I quit Nintendo after the SNES.

BT, how do you get to work? All he needs is a street corner to do his job. Usually they drop him off at the same corner afterwards... Have you ever seen pics of him? Clearly he never eats... Drugs mean you can go places without ever leaving your couch...

Getting to work in the city centre used to take about 15-20mins on the bus but they moved our site a few years back so now I have to make a transfer that takes it to about 35-40 mins depending on traffic - its a dog-leg route though, straightline its only about 5 miles, could walk it in around an hour. People from work will often drop me off in the centre on their way home so that usually knocks it back to a sub-half hour.
For shopping/eating there are two supermarkets, two butchers, a greengrocer, a bakery and a fair few cafes/restaurants/takeaways all within two minutes walk of my flats front door.
"How do you go anywhere?"
Walk? Bus, train, tram... I'd maybe get a bike but I'm lazy, there are too many cars/dickheads on the road, it rains a lot over here and cunts are flat out stealing bikes left and right - even shit ones!

Yea I like to be as independent as possible. I would go nuts knowing that I had to rely on someone else for transportation. If I want to go pick up a new 75" TV I just hop in my truck and go get it. If I want to go pick up a new arcade machine, same thing, jump in my truck and go. I just Google mapped my work commute and it would be a 24hr round trip to walk and a 7hr round trip to ride a bicycle not to mention the one main highway I would have to take (half the trip) is off limits to walking and bicycling on so you would have to add even more time taking out the more direct highway and taking back roads. I would imagine for me to hire a cab every day would cost more than a new car payment plus I wouldn't have the freedom of going where I want, when I want. I would hate the idea of public transportation anyway- just think of all those dirty anuses that are sitting on those seats 24/7 farting and leaking on them.....yuk....so nasty. Just imagine that 80 year old granny with her 5 day old soiled feminine pad and anus that hasn't been cleaned since the 90's leaking the fumes and goods on the seat you're about to sit on, LOL. I think I'd rather be dead then not have my own transportation.... I can just imagine how much it would cost to hire a cab for a day to drive me 12hrs back and forth to a MX race and sit there all day because the outback areas these events take place you're definitely not getting any public transportation on demand, LOL. Yea, much cheaper and 1 million times more convenient to own your own vehicle for me. Plus, vehicles are kind of a hobby as well.

There are whole sections of the population in Europe that don't own cars, in some of the towns you don't need them.

Why would you want to do that, when most of the major retailers (Best Buy, Amazon, CostCo, Newegg, etc. etc.) include free delivery on high-end electronics and appliances? The retail price is no different from picking it up yourself or having it delivered. But picking it up yourself costs you time and money (gas + wear & tear on your vehicle). Last time I bought a TV (from Best Buy), the guys who delivered it even set it up for me (lifting & taking it out of the box, and stand assembly). Sure, I could've done it myself, but it would've been a needless hassle.

Because I can have my new TV right away (20 minute drive) and not have to wait multiple days for shipping and be able to return it same day if I want and get refunded right away.

People over there don't like to go out for a random cross-country drive at their own leisure? Where I live it's rare to even see people just own one vehicle. Most people here have two or more. I've worked at some homes where I've seen 6 vehicles parked in their driveway. If you count my motorcycle, I have three. I don't know if my Seadoo would count as a 4th? Gotta have water transportation.....lol. I need a plane or helicopter and I'll have all bases covered, lol.

You don't get refunded right away when returning at the store, unless you pay cash. The refund takes a while to hit your debit/credit card. And even when paying cash, there's usually a limit to how much cash they'll refund in the store. Keep in mind, it's a retailer, not a bank... Chances are, returning a ~$3000 TV, you'd be offered a check in the mail or a gift card (in the amount of your refund). At least, that's the way it was when I worked at Best Buy in the mid-90's. Actually, returns are easier when buying online (at least, through reputable places like Amazon and Best Buy), because there's no waiting in line and then dealing w/ the 20 questions scenario. You print a label and drop it off at UPS, or pay a small fee to have them pick it up from your residence. Shipping is typically 2 days when I order through Amazon (Prime) or Best Buy. I can wait 2 days, if it means no dealing with crowds or lines (especially during the holidays).

Ok well I like going out for a drive once in a while and being in a crowd of people and 48hrs is way too long for my impatient ass. And as far as just dropping off at a UPS store, I live in the country and the UPS store is just as far of a drive as the retail stores I would returning to anyway. I couldn't imagine leaving a $3000 TV out on my porch for pickup while I'm at work. I cant even print a label because I absolutely refuse to buy printers anymore because all I ever get is a couple uses out of them before they become incompatible with next version of windows, break, and the printer ink is way overpriced. My last printer (big brand name Canon mind you) I used twice, got a new version of windows and the fairly new printer was no longer supported by the OS. That's happened to me like three times in a row and I'm just not paying for a printer to throw away after a couple uses anymore.

Just fyi though, UPS can print the label at their store (they can scan it from the email w/ return label on your phone), for a small fee. Some online sellers (like Newegg.com) pays for (UPS to print your label), if you have to return a defective item. I've noticed Best Buy even includes the return labels with the product they shipped. So owning a printer isn't a requirement.

Surely there must be drivers available for newer OS... I can't disagree with the ink being ridiculously expensive, but get yourself a cheapo HP inkjet printer just to have one. I got a HP1110 for like €40 or something and it's not an ink waster that feels the need to spray every time it's turned on and off (like the Epson we had before that) and it will try to print even if the ink cartridge is empty (unlike the Epson that refused all service if it felt like there wasn't enough ink in any of the cartridges, even if it was a colour you weren't going to need... god, I despised that printer)... This HP1110 is like those classic HP printers of the nineties, it just works. You're not going to print photos with it, but if you need a concert ticket printed or some form of email confirmation, it does that without any hassle...

You're not going to print photos with it, but if you need a concert ticket printed or some form of email confirmation, it does that without any hassle... Well, it happens sometimes. I've spent good money on hardware that had utter lack of driver support (beyond current generation it was created for). Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 (PC joystick), which I paid over $100 for, only worked for Win 98/Me. No support for XP or beyond. Still feeling kinda burned by that experience might explain why I've never been a fan of Xbox or MS in general. Also, a racing wheel (forget the brand) I bought for PS1 wasn't compatible with PS2. Even the games were forward compatible during that console generation change. Another company I've been burned by is Logitech, who failed to honor their mail-in-rebate offers. People say that's a problem with MIR offers in general. Personally though, Logitech is the only company to have failed me in this regard. Terrible customer service too. Attempted to resolve the issue through their customer service and found it was a waste of time. But in reality, Logitech loses by being dishonest and offering piss-poor service. Customer don't forget... Maybe Logitech got to keep some pocket change. But it's something I remember and remind people about, so they can avoid the same mistake and not be suckered by their MIR offers. And, of course, I personally stopped buying any of their products. Last 3 mice I bought were other brands.

The only company to screw me with a mail in rebate was Gigabyte so I've switched to Asus for graphics card and mobo. Not only did Gigabyte screw me on the rebate for the mobo but it's the only mobo I've ever had die on me (within a few months of owning it). So mix the mobo dying within a few months and them not honoring the mail in rebate on top of that, I won't ever buy a Gigabyte product ever again. Their loss over $20 I was supposed to get from them.
Yea I got burned the same way with a MS force feedback steering wheel. I spent all the money on it and only got to play one game with it before upgrading to XP and then it was rendered useless. So I'll never buy another MS controller. Even for my Xbox I made sure to buy aftermarket. Funny how my Playstation Wheel works fine in Windows but Microsofts own product doesn't! I wont touch their keyboards either since it only takes one drop of water to totally kill a $80 keyboard!
Logitech? I can't really say anything bad about them, my trusty MX518 is still killin' it after years of abuse.
But printers? OMG every single one I've bought! They either break down right away or support doesn't last into the next OS and I don't print much so I literately only get a few uses out of a printer before it's garbage so I just won't buy them anymore.

Back when Windows XP came out I helped a friend of mine with this, her mother had spent $500 on this huge multifunction printer in like 1997. It had NO drivers for Windows XP. Nadda, no work arounds I could find, just a bunch of really angry people who spent $500 on the thing trying hacks.

Their loss over $20 I was supposed to get from them. I love when people say "their loss" after saying they won't buy from a big company again. It's like spitting into the ocean, I doubt anyone will notice. lol That said I've pretty much only owned Gigabyte boards for the last 8-10 years or so and I love 'em. Usually go MSI on video cards.

Printers seem to be cheaply made and unreliable across the board (all brands). They probably engineer them that way on purpose, with the idea that you'll go out and buy a new one every few years.

I've never owned Gigabyte product, so can't comment on them. I've owned MSI (motherboard and graphics card) and they seemed pretty good... However, I read some reviews about MSI branded laptops. They say if you open one of their laptops (to upgrade the RAM, hdd/ssd, or even a simple cleaning), that automatically voids your warranty with MSI. It's worth noting, because the other (probably most) manufacturers will allow you to do basic upgrades on your laptop and still honor the warranty. For me, that's reason enough to never buy an MSI branded laptop.

Netgear (networking products) are another one to avoid if you expect them to honor the warranty. They make decent products. However, you have to keep literally everything included in the retail packaging of their products and return it all, else your product is not covered by their warranty.

The first 2 I owned, died after 2-3 years use. The MX518 never died, even after 5+ years use. I eventually gave it to my dad.
