Before Audioslave I was only nominally aware of Cornell having seen the video for Soundgarden's "Spoonman" on Beavis & Butthead and hearing "Black Hole Sun" around the ways. Then he formed up with the remaining members of Rage Against The Machine and dropped "Cochise"... BOOM! What a track/first album that was.
He was also responsible for arguably one of, if not the, best Bond songs of recent times, "You Know My Name".
Apparently in earlier years he suffered from levels of depression that meant he wouldn't ever leave the house... just seen a news update that says he hanged himself after a gig. Fifty-two years young. Bummer man. RIP!

Didn't know the guy. I knew his work, just never put a face to the music... Another tortured soul it seems.

Agree completely, BT. His death is a huge loss to countless fans (including me). imo, he was an exceptionally talented vocal artist.
I first heard his music (Soundgarden band, at the time) in the game "Road Rash 3D" on the 3DO.

One of the original Seattle badasses. I think they are all dead now... :/ If you like heavier rock you should check out Badmotorfinger, that was the first time I heard of him. I spun that CD regularly back in the 90s.
edit - I forgot, Eddie Vedder is still alive.
