American culture is all about consuming and indulging, there is never any real satisfaction from those kind of things. If Americans actually did more meaningful things, they'd be happier.

An addict can't see that though because his/her mind is driven & controlled by the addiction. It's related to Maslow's hierarchy. The mind will seek to satisfy those needs closer to the bottom of the pyramid first, invariably before the other needs above it. The way drug addiction works on the neurological level and its affect on neurotransmitters, it fits into the bottom of the pyramid alongside the need for food, warmth, etc.

There's many kinds of addictions, but drug addiction in particular is definitely a huge problem in this country. Alcohol use too, actually I'm starting to have liver problems that could possibly be related to drinking. I've drank lots of tequila over the years, it occurred to me just very recently that it's been quite a lot. If I still had all the bottles, there would probably be a considerable amount of them. I've never been a binge drinker or anything, but the amount has definitely added up over the years. I actually had to refrain from buying more tequila after work the other day, it wasn't too difficult but I still felt that I wanted it. I remember once I drank somewhere around 8 or 9 shots and didn't puke.
Doing things to help fellow humankind is a very positive thing, just recently I volunteered to help at a homeless shelter for church, it gave me a very good feeling to help people out and seeing how grateful they were. Made me want to do more things like that too.

Certainly. Although, it's easier to use it as the example because drug & alcohol addiction have by far the most studies & research conducted and their affects on the mind/neurotransmitters have been scientifically proven. It's so proven, in fact, they have medications to treat it (by blocking certain receptors in the brain, so the drug can't do its dirty work and make the balance of neurotransmitters go out of whack). As far as I know, no such medication exists to treat sugar/food addiction, video games addiction, work/workaholic, and the other types of addiction. Which brings up another interesting topic in regards to feminism and man-shaming. Feminists shame men for being pigs and sex addicts, while they've deemed fat-shaming as not PC and unacceptable. Obesity is usually the direct result of (food & sugar) addiction. So it's hypocritical to shame one and defend the other.

Our lifestyles are also completely unnatural. Humans started as hunter gathers. This meant a lot of walking and physical activity.
Your brain is designed to reward you for moving around. It is completely unnatural to sit for long periods of time and your reward system is not being activated.

People who don't get moderate levels of exercise are far more prone to depression and anxiety.

It's important to emphasis "moderate" exercise. Because if you over do it, without conditioning yourself to handle (an intense workout) first, your body actually produces more cortisol (stress hormone). Cortisol increases your appetite, so you might actually gain weight/fat (if your body's cortisol levels stay high for too long). Also, it can weaken your immune system, so you'd be more likely to catch a cold or become ill. What I heard from one fitness guru is that you shouldn't work out for longer than 20 minutes at a time, especially if you're just starting out.
