I was surprised by that too. {CLICK FOR SPOILER} When they sent that guy (Anatoly Sitnikov) to the roof to survey the damage, that also really happened and he received a fatal dose of radiation. This is what I found on Wikipedia about it: "After Dyatlov left, Fomin ordered Sitnikov, his replacement, to climb to the roof of Unit C and survey the reactor; Sitnikov obeyed and received a fatal radiation dose there; at 10:00 am he returned and reported to Fomin and Bryukhanov that the reactor was destroyed. The managers refused to believe him and ordered continued feeding of water into the reactor; the water, however, flowed through the severed pipes into the lower levels of the plant, carrying radioactive debris and causing short circuits in the cableways common to all four blocks."

I'll probably check that out when it's all done so I can watch it in a single go.
Star Wars - Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (Bluray): Can't tell you exactly how long it's been since I last saw this but I can tell you how long AT LEAST it's been because I'd never seen it in HD and the saga-boxset it comes in I bought in september 2015, so yeah, it's been a while. It's all because of that Star Wars youtube video I posted in the other thread, that made me want to re-visit episode 3 but I figured I might just as well complete the entire set, especially since I have never even played the blurays of the prequels, or even taken them out of the box... The HD did not help this movie at all. Jarjar never seems to be really part of the scene, in fact most CG creatures stand out really badly. You get used to it along the way but those first few scenes are... wait for it... jarjarring. It's not a good movie, I can admit that now. It has good moments but overall it doesn't quite fit together. The superserious political stuff combined with slapstick isn't the best way to try and set a tone for your movie. Really shows you how good the movies from the new trilogy are... ...even the Last Jedi.
Iron Sky (Bluray): There's a new one 'available' so what better time to first revisit the original. As far as Nazis on the moon movies go, it's undoubtly the best. The CG in this often was better or at least as good than the one in Episode 1, lol.
Shock & Awe (Download): I'm starting to like these movies about journalism/papers. The Post was great, the one with the pedo priests was great and this one's good too. It's a great companion piece to that recent Dick Cheney movie, Vice, because it shows the opposite of the coin when it comes to the invasion of Iraq and how all those high up politicians just followed their own agendas without listening to facts.
Resident Evil: Degeneration (Bluray): Boy, 3D CGI sure has come a long way. Compare this with the animation in Love, Death & Robots and you can see just how far that type of 'realistic' CG animation came in 10 years. Almost looks like you'd be able to render this movie in real-time by now. As far as Resident Evil movies go, it's not the worst, nor is it the best.

There was another miniseries I saw on HBO called The Night Of that's also good, James Gandolfini was one of the producers before he died. He was supposed to play the lawyer in it too, which John Turturro ended up playing.

Star Wars - Episode 2: Attack of the Clones (Bluray): Never noticed how sterile, clean and empty all those digital backgrounds were. On Coruscant especially it often feel like the characters are just standing in front of a picture. CGI was a massive improvement but still feels very plastic-y. The best picture quality is when there's no CGI present or when it's all CG. But at least the movie is more fun than the first.
Iron Sky: The Coming Race (Download): Fun sequel. More of the same but at the same time completely different. Check it out.
Ong Bak 2 (Bluray): Only the second time I watch this movie. I remember being very disappointed when I bought it all those years ago on DVD. It wasn't like the first at all and it didn't fulfil my expectations. Going in with a lowered expectation and not remembering anything about it, it was a lot better.

Black Panther (Download): So the kid could see Infinity War if he wanted to and for me a rewatch to see if I had missed something the first time. I still don't see what makes other people rave about this so much. It's OK but I'd rate it at the bottom of the Marvel ladder in every single aspect. Racist.

The Pool (Download): Thai movie about a guy that gets stuck in a 6m deep pool after the water drained out while he was asleep on an air mattress. To add to his problems, a rogue crocodile ends up in the same pool. As far as a single location thriller with only a few actors goes, this one wasn't bad. There were some very tense scenes, some of which provoked a physical reaction from me. Not jumpscares, more like whincing. It does become a little silly from time to time and the CGI croc is never very convincing but it certainly wasn't a bad flick.

Revenge (Download): Revenge flick starring Flemish Belgian actor Kevin Janssens as the main bad guy that 'deals' with his mistress after a hunting buddy of his rapes her. She's having none of that... ...bloody and violent revenge movie in the desert is what follows. Surprisingly good.

Star Wars - Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith (Bluray): The second half of this movie is pretty good, I'll give it that. Of the prequels it's the best but compared to something like the Avengers or even the new Star Wars movies, it's still pretty weaksauce.
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (Bluray): 20+ years in the making, was it worth it? Not really but it's ok. A lot of Gilliam chaos, lots of shouting but I can't really say what the movie is about, lol.

Okko's Inn (Download): Feelgood anime by Madhouse so you know the animation is going to be great, which it is, but sadly too little happens in the movie to really recommend it. A girl loses both parents in a car accident after which she goes to live (and work) in the Inn her grandmother owns. There she meets a few ghosts only she can see and that's about it. Some guests arrive, she tries to make them comfortable. Not the most exciting story to make into a 90-minute movie.

Attack on Titan - Part 1 (Download) Attack on Titan - Part 2: The End of the World (Download)
I'd seen part 1 years ago before part 2 was available but right after I'd seen the first season of the anime so in comparison it was pretty weaksauce and I never made an attempt to see the second part. I haven't rewatched the series either since so when I ran into both parts of the live-action adaptation recently, it felt like a good opportunity to give it another shot. You know what: it wasn't bad. Without the baggage of the anime it makes a lot more sense. The FX are pretty decent and it's violent as hell. The second part also gives an explanation for the titans that actually was quite satisfactory and the finale is suitable spectacular. I'm glad I gave this another chance.
Us (Download): Good horror film moments but the explanation for it all is so silly I'm not sure what to make of it yet. Like I said, it does the horror parts really well, but can you really ignore the silliness of the big plot reveal? I don't think I can...
Jo-Pil Ho: The Dawning Rage (Download): Korean flick about a dirty cop that accidentally stumbles upon a big conspiracy and now has to decide what side he's actually on. Good flick that reminded me a lot about Public Enemy, my favorite in the genre.
Eden Lake (Bluray): Probably one of the best survival horror flicks from the 2000s but at the same time I HATE those fucking yobbo kids so fucking much it's hard to watch this movie. The ending makes it even worse. But it's a good movie, I just hate everyone it it, lol.

I read something about how that movie only makes sense if you realize how class conscious British society can be and how much hatred their can be of people based off of nothing more then their accent. Like its basically a British version of deliverance.

The Witness (Download): How come Korea does thrillers so well? This one's about a guy that witnesses a murder but is too afraid to say anything about it, even when the killer is coming for him. Solid flick.
Garm Wars: The Last Druid (Download): Awful title, almost passed this movie up because of it. Screenshots didn't do it justice either but then I noticed it was directed by Mamoru Oshii which was enough to make me want to check it out in spite of some really bad reviews as well. Well, it's something alright. Visually not too dissimilar to Avalon but ever crazier plotwise if that's even possible. Impossible to try and make sense of here but not as bad as some reviews made it out to be. Visually it's quite impressive. The style forgives the less than stellar CGI and the original designs of all the ships, vehicles and costumes do the rest. I really dug it.
Mutafukaz (Download): Neat little anime that's too insane to try and explain. It's a lot of fun and flies by with great animation by Studio 4C.
The Quick & The Dead (Bluray): Fantastic little western by Sam Raimi that oozes Raimi-style. Westerns are among my least favorite movies but I've always loved this one.

Just watched Ready Player One (didn't see it mentioned yet). I enjoyed it immensely, the story is very good and it's full of references to many videogames and movies, I think people are still finding things to this day. 10/10 will watch again. Steven Spielberg's still got it.

Ong Bak (Download/DVD): The classic Thai fighting movie. It's aged a bit since it first came out but it still kicks ass. I did notice the music a lot of times, in a bad way I mean. Cheapo dance tracks. Can't remember they were always there or the version I downloaded had some sort of redub done.
Jurassic World 3D (3D Bluray): You know what, I kinda love this movie. I might even say I like it the best of the bunch, but I also really like JP3. Should rewatch that to be certain.

Tom Yum Goong (Download/DVD): Aka The Protector aka Warrior King. This used to be my go to recommendation for fighting movies but rewatching it after a long time, just like Ong Bak, it hasn't aged gracefully. In fact, it takes about 50 minutes to finally get going and is bogged down by needlessly complicated plottwists in that first half. Once the action well and truly starts though (with that one-take action set piece), it's still pretty great and features all the scenes one would remember from this flick, but that first half was surprisingly bad.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom 3D (3D Bluray): This movie is quite the opposite from the previous one. Here the first half is the best and it runs out of steam in the second part, turning into some sort of half-assed monster horror movie. I mean, it's not awful and it's neat in 3D, but the first half is just so much better. Dinosaurs are a lot more effective outside than they are in a Victorian castle setting.
Dark Blue (Download/DVD): I love corrupt cop movies and this one is probably one of the best, if not the best. Kurt Russell is always great but the setting is what really makes this special. Set around and during the Rodney King LA riots, it really creates the perfect atmosphere for this story about race and corruption.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (Download): OK, but the magic from the first movie wasn't as present anymore. Eventually the movie started to grow on me more but the beginning was a bit rocky and it took a while to find a good comedic rhythm. Ultimately I'd say it was still pretty good. I'd like to rewatch it in 3D especially.
Under the Silver Lake (Bluray): Second viewing makes a bit more sense than the first. My biggest complaint was it was far too hipster-y, which still is the case, but I went along with it. I like the mystery and the search even though none of it makes any sense in the end, but the movie has a very particular atmosphere I don't mind surrounding myself with. Reminds me of Mulholland Drive aboce anything else...
Ready Player One 3D (3D Bluray): This movie was made for 3D. Might very well be among the best 3D movies out there. It's so much fun even though the constant references to '80s stuff gets a bit annoying. Kids nowadays don't even know anything about the '80s anymore, let alone kids in 2045. Annoys me to see the main girl wears a Joy Division shirt. There's no way youth in 2045 even still remember Joy Division existed, let alone enjoy that style of music.
Dante's Inferno (Download): Animated flick that's a companion piece to that God of War rip-off I never played. Took a while before I managed to take the time to start watching this but I must say I kinda liked it. It switches animation styles throughout the movie, like Dead Space (2?), the animation so not all look as good but I liked the overall story and the visuals well enough. Helps it's set in hell and bloody as fuck. Surprisingly neat flick.

Saving Private Ryan (Bluray): Watched it with the kids because they had no idea. Not of the existence of this movie or what the D-Day landing was all about, and with the 75th anniversary coming up, what better moment to have them watch this absolute classic. Oh man, does it hold up. Made in this magical time where CGI was still only used to enhance the practical effects they already had. So all the explosions, bullet hits, vehicles, they were all still there. If, even Spielberg, made that movie now, every bullet hit would've been a CGI effect and 60% of any action frame would've been CGI and you would've felt the difference.
Patlabor (Download/DVD): Probably my favorite of the Mamoru Oshii anime movies, with Ghost in the Shell 2 as a close second. This one is smart without being too etherical like a lot of his movies tend to be. HD isn't always favorable for an older anime like this, but most of it looked great.
Chernobyl - Epi 1-4 (Download): Couldn't wait, had to see it. I'll pick up the last episode in a few days though I would've watched them all in a row if I had them all already. I had read somewhere the actors were all speaking English with Russian accents, which would've annoyed me, but it's also completely untrue. Either they were completely wrong or I read it wrong but they're all just speaking the Queen's English, except for Stellan Skarsgard who's not a native English speaker obviously. Anyway, about the show: compelling stuff. Took some getting used to at first, I expected them to explain the reasons for the explosion but then it just happens. Of course over the course of the first few episodes it becomes clear this mystery will be revealed as the main characters find it out themselves.

I think the final episode of Chernobyl (tomorrow) is going to show a flashback of the control room when the accident happened. It's been a great show, hopefully the final episode is just as good as all the others have been. It very quickly became #1 on IMDB's top 250 TV shows.

Ugh. Chernobyl - Epi 1-4 (Download): Couldn't wait, had to see it. I'll pick up the last episode in a few days though I would've watched them all in a row if I had them all already. I already researched the hell out of Chernobyl 10+ years ago so I already knew all about the RMBK reactors. Back in 2005 I was going to try and go to Chernobyl this is back "before it was cool". These days its pretty regular that people go there. If you wanna see a good docudrama on the actual explosion Zero Hero is pretty good:

Black Mirror Season 6: Black Mirror continuing its trend of just being "ok". All 3 episodes were varying levels of meh. The Miley Cyrus one was probably the worst of the 3. A far cry from how bleak the first season was.

Black Mirror S5 - Smithereens (Download): I liked this one a lot, very tense and emotional. One of the least future-tech episodes of the bunch, taking place in the current day, not the future or near-future. Looking up the name of the episode, which I'd forgotten, I noticed this one was the highest rated of the current season as well and I can see that. I haven't watched the 3rd one yet, but it's got a much lower score, so chances are it's not going to be better.

Django Unchained (Bluray): So good. Tarantino just has a way to make everything interesting. Don't care about westerns, but I care about Django Unchained. Everyone in it is great, looks great, is great.
The Predator (Bluray): This movie is a mess. I like the middle part, but the opening and finale are too messy and rushed. This German bluray calls the movie Predator Upgrade btw, which makes more sense than 'The Predator' to be honest.
Army of Darkness (Bluray): Finally bought it in HD. Wasn't really looking but came across the German bluray of the Director's Cut for a good price. Supposed to be a really good version image wise, which is was. Luckily I also read in the user reviews, quite by accident, there was a DTS-MA track on the disc, which isn't accessible through the menu, which chooses for the English option a Dolby Digital 2.0 track. Strange. Scrolling through the audio tracks however you can find it... Ultimately there's only 1 downside to this bluray, the director's cut doesn't have the S-Mart ending and it isn't anywhere in the disc's extras either. I like to watch that after the more disappointing Director's cut ending.
Black Mirror S5 - Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (Download): Wasn't that invested in it at first but it slowly won me over and when the twist with the doll happens, I was all on board even though it makes no sense in the slightest. Knowing how every electronic device immediately gets hacked and/or analysed in detail by everyone online, it's hard to imagine only after all that time and quite by accident these girls stumble upon the hidden brainlock. Some tech nerd would've found that out in the first week. Kinda like that going in reverse in the race in Ready Player One, people would've done that on the first day, without even trying to find the secret.

"Patricia Tallman ... Possessed Witch" was in Army of Darkness. Her character from B5, the telepath, used to be my Avatar. She was a stunt woman as well as an actress, and she had a big role in Night of the Living Dead (1990). Anyway, did you ever see Mad Dog Time? A very odd flick, but I couldn't help but to be amused by it. Impressive cast that took on odd ball roles. www.imdb.com/title/tt0116953www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/69841/mad-dog-time/

I have not but I'll keep an eye out for it.
Godzilla 3D (3D Bluray): I still need to go see the new one but I wanted to revisit 'the original' before I did so. Would've been nice if I was able to stay awake for it. Don't usually fall asleep watching 3D movies but here I did nod off now and then. Not the movie's fault though.
Hotel Mumbai (Download): Wow, they certainly didn't pull any punches showing what it might look like to be in the midst of a terrorist attack. The calm and methodical nature of the gunmen especially is something that seems very true when compared to actual footage (yeah, I saw the Christchurch video). And I guess so many of the staff of the hotel sticking around to try and help guests get to safety is commendable, but on the other hand, should they have really risked their lives to help rich white people? I can't be sure I would have in that situation.
Mega Time Squad (Bluray): Betch! Bitch is funny when said in a New Zealand accent. Anyway, fun, low budget, timetravel romp from our friends down under.

Montage (Download): Another Korean (killer) thriller that's great from start to finish. Unpredictable even though I'd seen it before with a very neat twist. Recommended.
The Final Girls (Bluray): Fun with the slasher genre. Group of friends gets transported into their favorite cheesy B-movie slasher and they have to try and survive using their knowledge of the movie. A lot of fun.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Theatre): Already went to see this thursday evening but forgot to post it. Enjoyable monster flick. Looks like they set out to make the most spectacular movie ever. Every monster gets his or her own hero pose trailer shot. It all looks amazing, but at the same ime I can't help but feel it's missing some of the charm the old movies had. I'm not saying it should be guys in suits, but maybe it could me a little less spectacular and just take some time to show us the monsters without all the madness going on. The human story was OK, there's an acceptable mythology behind it all. Yeah, I rather liked it. Can't wait to rewatch it at home (in 3D).
Transformers (Bluray): The original is still the best. It has the most heart and the action isn't overdone yet. Gotta respect Bay for not going all the way CGI in this one. You can see most of the explosions are still practical and stuff like that.
