Predator (Download/Bluray): Bluray didn't have Dutch subs and really wanted to watch it with the kids, so downloading it is. This movie works so fucking well. The kids had no idea what to expect, didn't know about the Predator yet so everything is a revelation to them. The youngest had no interest in this movie beforehand but it won him over. First time the cloaked Pred is shown he actually said: "What the fuck was that?" Like Jaws, a perfectly built up movie, not showing its hand until it has to and then going for gold once it does.

Oldest is getting there, he'd probably be able to follow for the most part, but the youngest has barely gotten any English in school. He's only 12.

Thor Ragnarok 3D (3D Bluray): Probably the funniest of all the Marvel movies and a genius use of the Hulk.
I just found out I forgot to rewatch Guardians 2. I was gonna skip Civil War and Dr Strange but not Guardians. Ah fuck, Phase 3 is all messed up, who cares...
Extinction (Download): Meh, couldn't keep me awake so this 90-minute movie took me about 2 hours and change to sit through. It's an idea for an hour long episode of something (and it kinda already has been, Black Mirror did something very similar in season 3). Might give it another chance one day but probably not. Not Netflix finest (that's still Annihilation by a huge margin).

13 - Game of Death (Download/DVD): Wasn't particulary looking for a HD version but came across it and thought it had been a long time since I last saw this. Pretty crazy Thai flick about a guy having to do increasingly insane tasks for money. I also came across some American remake some time ago but decided against watching that.

A Quiet Place (Download): Ok, with some good moments but doesn't hold up to close scrutiny. Why the hell would you even consider having a baby when every little sound might get you killed? Anyway, it wasn't bad, better than most horror that males it to theatres nowadays. I finally got around to seeing this one (rental), I thought it was "good" but not as great as the reviews say. I agree about "why did they have a baby?", I guess it was something that just happened with them and they had no choice but to go along with it. I heard they're making a sequel. Also rented Super Troopers 2, it had some moments that made me laugh but it was pretty much the exact same plot as the first movie.

Right now watching Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Just a brilliant movie. Great writing, very witty and funny dialogue by a great cast of characters. I think it's my favorite of Guy Ritchie's movies, nothing else comes close for me. Might actually be my #1 favorite movie of all time.

Memento (TV/DVD): Classic that was on TV, which is a bit higher res than my DVD (and on an ad-free channel), so I watched that with the wife. Movie totally holds up, Nolan doesn't indulge in overexplaining everything like he tends to do nowadays, he just expects the audience to be smart enough to figure it out, which I like, even if I don't get it all the first time (not so much a problem in Memento, but like in Primer to just name something, I respect it more for not overexplaining).
Black Panther 3D (3D Bluray): 3rd time I watch this, first time in 3D, and probably liked it best this time around. Not so much because of the 3D, wasn't that impressive to be honest, but it helped look past some of the stuff I didn't like and focus more on the good: the character stuff. The visuals I still have all kinds of problems with. CGI water during the fight, CGI sand and snow during the burials, ugh, uncanny valley for me. That's not haw sand and snow behave... ...the characters looking almost dry while fighting in a CGI waterfall. Also don't like the car chase in Korea and the entire finale action.
The Messengers (Bluray): Only got this because it was super cheap (€2). I have a region 3 DVD of it I probably would never have watched again, but for €2 I'd give it another go. Only American Pang Brothers movie I'm aware of, released by Ghost House pictures, which was enough for the bluray publisher to claim this movie as 'a film by Sam Raimi', lol. Pang bros did a bunch of good Asian horror flicks, The Eye most notably, the second of which I thought was fucking amazing (with such a fucked up reveal). The Messengers has some of their visual flair but is ultimately a little weak on story.

The Avengers - Infinity War (Download): With the kids. Such an amazing movie. Even they were dead quiet during the ending, which is quite a feat.
Lost in Space (Bluray): Always liked this movie even though some of the CG is now getting seriously old. Most of the time it's good enough (the space stuff) but the full CG creatures didn't fare so well. Ouch.
Battle Royale (Bluray): I'd almost forgotten how great this movie was. Fuck the Hunger Games, low-rent rip-off.

My Yamaha home cinema receiver died, I ordered a new one but I'd have to bridge one movie night without it. I don't particulary like the headphone output of the TV itself so I figured I'd watch some movie I hedn't gotten around to and I figured weren't that great so I wouldn't mind some wonky sound.
Elisabeth Harvest (Download): Twisty thriller mystery with an angle I can't tell or it'll spoil too much. Quite farfetched though and as such hard to take serious.
Attack of the Adult Babies (Download): Speaking of farfetched, this low budget British horror comedy sure is that. But I can't say I didn't start loving it more and more as it went on and it kept getting crazier and crazier till it all came together in a gross and gory finale (with some claymation even). Get past the initial low budget awkwardness and you're in for a treat, still low budget but wonderfully twisted and gory.
Around this time I figured out the sound was a whole lot better if I didn't use the media player and just played the files through the TV's USB. All kinds of noise (that were also apparent if I used the PS3) weren't there. Guess the HDMI plays havoc with the headphone jack?
Godzilla: Monster Planet (Download): Put off watching this for months. Got pretty bad reviews so I never could bring myself to watch it but now I'm glad I finally bit the bullet and did because I liked it. Much more serious than I anticipated. I figured it was just some American cartoon but it was actually a Japanese spoken anime (by the people behind Knights of Sidonia, I'm guessing judging by the animation style) and it took it all superseriously, which I liked.
Kite (Download): Tried watching this some time ago but switched it off after like half an hour because I kept falling asleep and it wasn't interesting enough to keep rewinding. It's a (low budget) live-action remake of a cult animé, problem is that anime is just about 45 minutes long so they have to fill it up somehow. I recognised some scenes but most was invented for the movie, including the story arc and yeah, it wasn't very good. They're trying a certain style but it's pretty ugly and all the action is kinda generic and it just keeps going (even though it's only 90 minutes, it felt about twice as long). The good wasn't good enough to overcome the bad.

Howling (Bluray): Figured it would be a werewolf movie, but no, this Korean flick is actually about a killer wolfdog that's killing people for convoluted reasons. It's good at first, with the police trying to figure out what's happening but as the story starts to unfold it becomes more and more convoluted and in the end the dog steals the show. Lucky it was cheap because I probably won't watch it again.
Revolt (Bluray): Lower budget alien invasion movie set in Africa. Reminds me a lot of The Dead, that Ford bros zombie movie. This too is all about a guy trying to figure out what's what while running into situations set against cool looking backdrops. In that regard it also looked like a game because it's those kinds of backdrops: ruined buildings, a bridge, a satellite dish all in various states of disrepair. I liked it.
Guardians (Bluray): That Russian superhero movie, now without nodding off. It's OK, visually, but watching it wide awake, one does start to notice the logic errors and plot problems more. Oh well, it's not the worst superhero movie I've seen.
Swiss Army Man (Bluray): Bought this back in february already but for some reason I couldn't get myself to watch it again, which is weird because 5 minutes in I was already having so much fun again. It's as indie as they come but the humor keeps it manageable.
Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle (Download): More of that Godzilla anime. One of the reasons why I decided to finally watch that first movie is because I knew the second was already out. More of the same, literally, which means no Godzilla for the first hour but a lot of anime pathos followed be a visually impressive battle sequence. They won in the first movie (kinda), so you know they'll lose in the second, 3rd one is going to introduce Mothra and they'll defeat Godzilla. I'm pretty sure and seeing how there's talk of Gidorah in this one, that's going to end up as the big bad in the 4th movie and they'll revive Godzilla to get him...

Deadpool 2 (Download): This was some kind or other extended cut, which included an extra fight scene where he takes on Yakuza. Upgrade (Download): Written and directed by Leigh Whannell and starring Logan Marshall-Green about a guy getting some AI implanted in him, after an accident leaves him quadraplegic, that can take over his movements if need be, which makes for some neat fighting scenes. Took until that first fighting scene for me to really get into the movie to be honest, I went in blind without having any idea of what the movie was going to be about, but when that scene happened I remembered I saw a trailer for it at one time or another. That's also when the movie really starts to pick up and becomes pretty good.
Bound (Bluray): Classic by now, the Wachowskis debut movie and it holds up. I expected a little more of the Arrow bluray but I guess this is as good as it is going to get from the source material.
Spectral (Download): I was waiting for a bluray, but looks like Netflix isn't going to release it, which leaves me no choice but to redownload. This movie is so much like Aliens (for the most part) it isn't even funny anymore. Let's go down the list: -Contact is lost with a group of people for reasons unknown -A civilian with experience is asked to go along -They arrive in (an) APC(s) where the commanding officer and the civilian can follow everything on monitors -The civilian spots something first on the screens -All hell breaks loose when the aliens/spectres attack -Hasty retreat during which most of the team dies -The APC(s) crash(es) -The remaining people hole up in a place with safety precautions in place -They find (a) kid(s) that survived up to that point -The creatures find a way over the thing that's keeping them out -The kid knows of an alternate route to get out -More people die during the escape -Help arrives from the sky -Guns are frankensteined together -Attack on the place where the things originate from -They also find out the creatures were originally the people that were living there, in Spectral they were experimented on and their nervous systems are somehow used to control the creatures, in Aliens the civilians have been impregnated by the alien eggs to create more Alien creatures.
I also know why I didn't keep the original file, not because I didn't like the movie but because there was a framerate issue in the best quality rip, a rip I managed to re-download so again with the framerate issue that causes a stutter now and then. Back then I figured I'd end up buying it anyway but now I'll have to look for a version without those issues if I want to keep it.

Preacher - Season 1 (Bluray): As season 3 is drawing to a close (I'm saving'em up to binge them when it finishes) I wanted to rewatch everything up to now. I'd seen season 1 already a few times, but season 2 I haven't seen again since it first aired (I watched it episode by episode, which was a mistake). I bought it on bluray in the meantime though so that's up next week or something.
Season 1 is probably one of my favorite first season of any TV-show ever...

Avengers - Infinity War 3D (Download): Wanted to watch it again, in 3D, before the long wait for an affordable 3D version begins. Such a good movie. Recently I saw some deleted scenes as well and there was one I felt should've been in the movie. It's when they're first hunting Vision and Wanda and one of the bad guys keeps tapping his staff to increase tension. I guess they cut it for pacing reasons because now that scene is non-stop action and that would've made it stop dead for a good minute or 2, but I still liked the scene.
Heavy Trip (Download): According to my buddy the movie that made him laugh the hardest all year. A Finnish metal comedy about a group of guys trying to get their metal band off the ground. I guess it had its moments but I just never got into it at all. Almost shut it off after 30 minutes but because I didn't have anything else short enough before I had to go to bed, I put it back on. I saw the humor in some moments but it just didn't do it for me at all.

Preacher - Season 2 (Bluray): Saw it week by week when it was first aired but that was a mistake, a mistake I didn't repeat for season 3. This works better binging it in 1 or 2 sittings. It's 3 episodes longer than season 1, which it maybe shouldn't have been. When I first saw it, I felt they spent too long in 1 location, but that wasn't so much the case this time. Sure, they spent a long time in Denis' house, but they still move all over the place. There were some things I'd already forgotten about so I'm glad I got to refresh my memory before diving into season 3 (in a few weeks because it's not finished yet).
edit: Yey, just found out season 3 is 10 episodes again, not 13 and the last one actually airs tonight, so I can binge it next weekend. Accidental perfect timing.
Hereditairy (Download): Deserves all the praise it got (not about the people walking out because they were too scared, WTF is up with that?). It's one of the best horror flicks I've seen in a while, probably the best since It Follows. It's all about the atmosphere and the general fucked up nature of it all. No apparitions causing jumpscares and all that Blumhouse shit, but just solid storytelling and acting (give Toni Collette that Oscar™). No point in spoiling anything, just watch it, just don't expect a teenybopper jumpscare popcorn flick.
Summer of '84 (Download): New movie by the people that did Turbo Kid and another '80s nostalgia trip but this time about a group of kids in a Goonies meets Rear Window/Disturbia kind of situation where the parents won't believe them. Good but lacks the gory insanity that made Turbo Kid stand out from the pack. This is more of a straightforward movie with a boatload of nostalgia covering it.

Preacher - Season 3 (Download): LOL, so crazy, all those weird and wonderful characters. A Mr Creosote type cardinal that meets a similar end than the Python Creosote and if you though Herr Starr wasn't silly enough already, after getting shot, his head now resembles the head of a penis. I was suprised they went back to 10 episodes after the second season was 13. While I felt 13 was too much in that season, I felt a few more in this one wouldn't have hurt. We barely see Eugene and Hitler (now Hilter) out and about in the real world, some more time on those two couldn't hurt. That being said, it was great in the first season and it continues to be good in the following ones. Can't wait for more...

The Happiness of the Katakuris (Bluray): Takashi Miike's silly musical about a family trying to run a guest house and every guest turning up dead. It got an Arrow bluray release that makes it all look a lot better than it probably should, the image is so crisp it almost feels wrong for a movie this silly.
Blood Fest (Download): A love letter to horror movies but sadly not that great a movie itself. It does have its moments, like when the Blood Fest itself 'kicks' off, which has some great gore, but it comes and goes after that with all kinds of farfetched ideas along the way. All in all its fun enough for fans of the genre, but it doesn't elevate the material.
King Arthur - Legend of the Sword 3D (3D Bluray): This was unexpected, not just the movie but the bluray itself: first time ever I buy a 3D bluray that doesn't come with a 2D version as well. Didn't notice it when ordering, I probably wouldn't have if I'd known. Luckily the movie turned out to be all kinds of madness I didn't expect as well. I skipped this by completely, never even bothered downloading it and never saw a trailer and I see now I was wrong. Can't remember how it was received but I'm pretty sure this was not loved universally, lol. Kicks off with an opening that would be a finale for most movies. Impressive visuals, especially in 3D and cuts and flashes its way to a finale that's not as impressive as the opening at breakneck pace. At one time I thought: "I wanna see a chronologically cut version of this one day, lol", so many flash-forwards and -backs, such intense action scenes, totally unexpected but not unwelcome. I kinda dug it, against expectation.

Everything is Terrible(live show): So I have been following Everything is Terrible online for years on facebook/insta and such. I don't even remember how I found them. They have a live show and my city was one of the first stops. Was only $15 so I went. Sold out.
Every see a movie or show advertised and you are like "I can guess what pretty much every frame of that is going to look like"? It was like that. Was a crazy mixture of messed up 80s/early 90s low budget horror clips, low budget Christian shows, porno, informercials, yadda yah.
There is no way that what I saw legal in the copyright sense based on the sheer number of clips they took from mainstream movies.
The live skits were cheesy but well done for what they were. Was a fun show but not something I would sit through again.

Don't they speak English? YGTR. Learn to speak American (English slang) and teach it to your youngins'. Because the whole world is becoming America. Just kidding... sort of. I'm just poking fun, because some might think it sounds bigoted (or nationalist?) to promote one universal language. However, according to scientists, one world language (English) and global instantaneous communication (the internet) are part of the evolution & advancement of civilization... small steps towards (humans) eventually becoming a Type I civilization. futurism.com/civilization-type-0-living-in-a-subglobal-culture/

Unbreakable (Bluray): So fucking good, from start to finish. The camera angles and pans are so well chosen and I really noticed the music this time around as well. It's always been my favorite Shyamalan and it still holds up. The recent surge in comic book movies makes it even better.
Baby Driver (Bluray): Second time, still not convinced. I figured out what the problem is: I don't give a fuck about Baby. I recognise I'm watching a competently made movie and there's a lot to like, but because I don't care about the main character, it all feels artificial and forced. Like 'It', you're always reminded you're watching a movie because situations feel fake. It's OK but that's it. There are 2 commentary tracks, I was wondering if they discussed Kevin Spacey at all in them. Can't be sure of the timeline but I guess it would all have been recorded before he got burned.
TAU (Download): Yeah, no. I didn't know anything about it but was prepared to like it if given half the chance but the longer it went on, the less I liked it. It features the dumbest smart person that thinks it's a good idea to leave an impressionable AI alone with a smart (ass) hostage and if it doesn't behave like it's supposed to do, he 'hurts' it by deleting its code(?)... ...how will that improve it? Deleting its code and the memories it's been building to help it grow better, I thought that was the entire point of the exercise. And then at the end, after everything is destroyed, this complicated AI manages to survice in the tiniest of drones? Too many questions for it to be enjoyable
Mayhem (Bluray): Now this is more like it, my kind of trash. Funny, stylish, bloody and a whole lot of fun. My kinda movie.

Waterworld (Bluray): Always liked this. It's a fun adventure movie. Ok, so it's very derivative of Mad Max but that doesn't stop me from liking it.
Ultraviolet (Bluray): Can't say why the hell I bought this again. Ok, it was cheap but I can't say I ever really liked it. Starts OK, with 30 minutes of fighting, action and chasing but then it completely grinds to a halt for another 30-40 minutes. I can remember falling asleep so often during this on previous viewings, lol. Anyway, dumb movie with a strange visual style that's even more jarring in HD. Completely blurred out faces against HD backdrops and visual effects that would serve as pre-vis effects in modern movies. Weird and so long and boring in the middle part.
It Comes at Night (Bluray): Very good psychological suspense only let down by never even hinting at what might come at night, so to speak. Just a hint to make us care more about the predicament of the people.
A.I. Tales (Download): Anthology of short movies, none of which have anything to do with AI. First two are actually exactly the same, just with a different conclusion and both a supremely boring, meaning I watched those a while ago and gave up. Watched the rest last night, which were better, but not by much. First and second stories are both about a person saying goodbye to their family, friends and lover(s), in the first it's like this Logan's Run situation, the second is about a woman leaving for a permanent mission to Mars, but the build up is exactly alike, just the conclusion is different. 3rd one is the best, about a group of post-apocalyptic survivors running into a facility that can send them to a base on the moon, turns out the ship will only hold 2. End. From the credits I learned this was a short movie distilled from a feature script and it would be interesting to see where it would lead. Last one I didn't get, something about sending messages through time. Eric Roberts shows up to adjust his cufflinks, he doesn't actually say anything, lol. Only 70 minutes but first 2 make it seem like twice as long.

Completely blurred out faces against HD backdrops and visual effects that would serve as pre-vis effects in modern movies. Weird and so long and boring in the middle part. Cameron Bright was used as the same plot device in two movies in the same year. Could destroy hemophages/could spell the end for mutants.
Trivia: The scene where Milla walks bare assed down the hallway: She said it was amazing how many people found a reason to be on the set that day. There was never actually an Ultraviolet comic book. Roger Ebert gave the film a (borderline) thumbs up on his TV show. (I went to see it right after that) He had a good time watching it, and I suspect he's a Milla fan on top of being a SF fan. IIRC he gave a commentary for Dark City. Though you'd probably know for sure about that.
P.S. Afaik the movie had iffy/interesting financing and I suspect that near the end of production there was no way to go over budget. Had they been able to we'd have gotten less exposition and more action. The set pieces were all good, especially the roof top scene, the escape from the facility that had Cameron Bright, and the ending. The CGI could have used more funding as well.
Edit: Huh, Wimmer wrote Salt.

Castle Rock - Season 1 (Download): Was OK, had a good atmosphere and an interesting mystery but apart from the penultimate episode, it dances around the issue too much and the ending, well, I just didn't really get.
