Since the last Steam update I got a counter running down in the top menu bar. At the end of the year it will stop working on Vista (and XP). Guess I'll finally have to get another computer. I got this quad core in, I'm gonna say 2009, maybe 2008? I haven't really been gaming anymore (that's why I haven't yet updated) but not having Steam would be a problem for the few times I do still play a game.

Dude just pirate Windows 10, install it and call it a day if you are feeling super cheap lol.
It should run just fine on a system from 2009.

I downloaded legit files from MS to USB thumb drives and loaded Win 10 onto a couple of computers for my parents. MS just allowed the install/free (on PC's that previously had older versions Windows) without any hiccups. Not sure about upgrading from XP though. This might only work with PC's that had Vista or 7. In any case, for PC's/motherboards that allow booting the OS from USB thumb drive, installing Windows 10 is easy.

Just fyi, many people have complained about the EULA for 10. Modern OS's are like Facebook and other software these days... actively takes your data and sells it to the highest bidder (probably). lol

It should run just fine on a system from 2009. If he's playing older games, they should (mostly) run just as well on the same hardware (except for ram maybe... I read Win 10 performs best with 8GB ram or more). I have a slightly older laptop I use for work (rdp), and I installed 16GB low latency DDR3 in it. It only has a dual-core 1.8Ghz cpu and Win 10 runs great on it. Just about any quad-core cpu would do even better, obviously. Upgrading the ram (to 8GB+, from 4GB or less) is a good idea anyway, since it means fewer reads/writes to the hdd/ssd, which might increase your PC's longevity.

I was running win 10 on a core 2 quad fairly recently. It was perfectly fine. More than fine actually, I was playing Destiny 2 on that rig with a GTX560ti. Ha.
Microsoft allows you to install and run Win 10 indefinitely. The only catch is some features are disabled if it's not activated, but I'm pretty sure all of the missing features are cosmetic.

I can actually get Win10 for free, but I didn't think it would be a good idea to force that on this ancient system. That being said, I did install an SSD in it after the original HDD died so that's gotta be worth something.
To be honest though, I haven't played any Steam games for years. Only fairly recently I've been playing a replaying a few. I could probably survive not having it. But then I really should upgrade, there's no reason why I shouldn't. I mean, I can afford it easily and I still want to play the new Doom.

Windows 10 is better optimized for SSD's than older OS's, so performance might actually improve (provided your system has a decent amount of ram).

It supports the latest stuff so you wouldn't be stuck in ancient crap. 100% the file copying is way better.

I had upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro, but after I upgraded my motherboard, CPU and RAM it said I had an invalid key. I had to call MS support and they gave me a new key. In all fairness, the copy of Windows 7 I had was OEM but they said this new key should be good if I upgrade again. I was expecting them to tell me I had to buy a new copy of Windows, they really surprised me.

That's not a bad price for 16 gigs of DDR3.

That being said tho might not want to worry too much about it. I bought my Samsung 850 Evo 1 tb back in 2015 and put a lot of usage on it. Still shows as 99% healthy in Crystal Disk Info.

Samsung (Evo/Pro) SSD's are among the best (high/good MTBF ratings). It's the same brand I went with for my old laptop when replacing its drive and for my recent PC build just last year. Regardless, a whole new PC (like he's contemplating in his 1st post) would be overkill, unless he changes his mind a little while later and starts getting into newer games & software. For now, it sounds like ram and OS upgrades are ideal (and less costly) for his situation.

fyi, the price dropped again on that G.SKILL ram, by quite a lot. Now it's only 85.99 euros for 16GB.

Right, I haven't mentioned it on here yet but I actually did upgrade my computer this weekend...
I bought and installed Windows 7 on it, lol, which solves the Steam issue because it's only XP and Vista that won't be supported anymore. Movie buddy of mine informed me that the prices for Win 7 bottomed out after MS announced it would stop supporting it in 2020 and linked me to a €12 purchase, which I thought was worth giving a shot. It's cheaper than going to McDonalds. Except for some issue getting my headphones (and/or the Realtek GUI) to work that took a few hours to sort out, it was completely painless, every old program I threw at it still works even the ACDSee from 2000.

Well now its easy enough to go to Windows 10 eventually. Its a tighter, faster operating system. I'm not sure if there is a way to get a free upgrade to Windows 10 anymore for home users.

I would make the jump to Win10...DirectX12. There's plenty of other little things you might not notice at first like being able to stream in 5.1 from Netflix on the Win10 Netflix app but no longer supported in the Win7 Media Center app (and definitely not web browser supported)....
Linux is interesting, but it only takes that one app (or game) that I use often that just doesn't have a Linux version, like say Movie Studio Platinum, that keeps me from jumping ship.

I don't need all that, I just need what I have to work properly, which it does now.

If it's an old PC and your hdd/ssd does read/writes practically non-stop from having low ram, it's probably a good idea to start doing regular backups. Or you could get Windows 10 and copy all of your important files to OneDrive (Microsoft's cloud storage software).
However, from what I read on the interwebs, Windows 10 datamines your info, kind of like Facebook or Apple. So I could see why some ppl would boycott it.
