I'm not happy about potentially losing up to 30% performance from a fix to a flaw that's been in most processors for the last 10 years. What's your guys professional opinion on the situation? A few minutes of research shows this mainly effects servers + Intel CPU's but I don't even want a little performance loss on my gaming PC. I think the update rolls out on the 9th + plus needs a BIOS update to take full effect?

AFAIK it won't affect gaming performance at all. It will hurt server performance.
I hope I am right. Since I am laptop only and laptop CPUs are weaker then desktops I sure as hell don't wanna lose any CPU cycles.

Did the update get released on windows update yet? Not sure. I wouldn't worry about it as I doubt some Malware is going to destroy your computer over either of these. Spectre is all theoretical AFAIK.

I'm more worried about the performance than the security, lol.

According to an article I read earlier, there WILL be a noticeable performance hit for older CPU's (2015 and earlier), but newer ones (2016 and newer) will have a negligible performance hit.
I call BS, I think Intel's just trying to force people to upgrade. On top of that, their CEO sold half of his stocks before the security flaw was even announced.
I'm gonna switch to AMD Ryzen, had been planning to anyway.

A few friends of mine have the FX-8320, it seems to be a great processor. My processor (i5) is about 5 going on 6 years old now, so it's time to upgrade anyway. Also they recently announced that AMD's lowering the prices of their Ryzen processors: www.extremetech.com/computing/261666-amd-slashes-ryzen-prices-take-intels-coffee-lakeLooking to get the R7 1700, $299 seems a good price for it. With motherboard and DDR4 RAM, it won't be cheap but I already have an SSD, hard drive, case and a very good videocard and PSU.

Just a heads up, AMD is releasing 2nd generation Ryzen CPU's this April, they'll be on a slightly smaller process (12nm vs 14nm) and will supposedly have slightly higher clocks. They will work with current Ryzen motherboards.

There's a lot of code getting written that will minimize this hit further.

Intel is going to compel gaming fanatics to update from Windows 7. I will never understand why anyone with a high end computer would hang onto Windows 7. Windows 10 is a better OS. When Windows 7 was still new a bunch of people were like "Windows XP for life!" Meh. I guess I have a different perspective working in IT. I don't have the luxury of using outdated shit. If I don't know the latest stuff for my job I would look like an idiot.

There's a big impact on SQL servers that are operated by poorly coded applications...ones that make multiple requests as opposed to cached SQL calls. There also appears to be some high level performance hits on php enabled web servers. According to benchmarking these are the high risk post patched systems. Desktop users are going to see a nominal hit, but the security updates are crucial for any Internet connected device, your shit is going to get owned by automated worms looking for this specific exploit in less than days now. The attack is easily automated and lacks too much sophistication.

I've read that the US Navy still uses Windows XP and regularly pays (millions of $'s) for Microsoft to do security patches on it.

You recently updated your bios? Asus has a beta version that I'm waiting to see made final, or at least out long enough to look pretty reliable.

I haven't updated my BIOS since 2013 and have the latest available version. There haven't been any new BIOS updates released since.
My motherboard is from MSI.
There might've been a patch included in a Windows update, but I've looked at the updates in the history and none of them so far mention anything about it. I haven't noticed any slowdown in CPU performance either.
